Ball Playing in the Mizrachi Courtyard
It is wonderful to see so many children enjoying the new outdoor areas and the courtyard on Shabbat and Yom
Tov.
Concerns however have been raised about ball games being played in these areas during and after shule services.
At times, it can be quite dangerous, particularly for young children and the elderly, to be in these areas due to
footballs, soccer balls and the occasional tennis ball being kicked or thrown around.
To ensure the safety of all congregants we respectfully ask parents to ensure that their children refrain from
playing ball games in these areas during and after shule services.
We wish Mazal Tov to the following members who celebrate their
Hebrew wedding anniversary during the coming week:
Benjamin & Tamara Cohney (Shabbat)
Les & Anne Weinberg (Sunday)
Mazal Tov to Edward Lichtig, who ranked 18th in the world (14th not counting the Israelis) at the World Bible Quiz
recently held in Israel. This is particularly significant as this year the number of countries entered in the world
competition doubled to thirty five, there were 80 contestants and the standard was exceptionally high.
Eva Goldberg is currently in Caulfield Hospital recovering from a bad fall that occurred over Pesach.
If you have some spare time, she would love to have some visitors.

WELL DONE EDWARD LICHTIG We are so proud that in last week’s World Bible Quiz held in Israel, Edward Lichtig was announced Australian King of Tanach and he ranked 18th champion in the world (14th not counting the Israelis). This is particularly significant as this year the number of countries entered in the world competition doubled to thirty five, there were 80 contestants and the standard was exceptionally high.
Edward is still on the Chidon Olami program for another week where he is privileged to have audiences with the Prime Minister and Minister of Education, and tour Israel in an exciting and educational program especially designed for the winners.
They have really treated him like royalty and he is looking forward to talking to the school about his experiences, which he has described as extraordinary, saying: "winning has been phenomenal, meeting dignitaries has been exceptional and the friendships I’ve made with my fellow contestants is enriching and remarkable. I have made lifelong friends here from all over the world. This has been the opportunity of a lifetime and most of all I have acquired Jewish History and Bible knowledge that will stand me in good stead for the rest of my life. Thank you to everyone who helped me along the way".
A photo of him together with the TV shows compare is attached, as well as him holding the flag high and flanked by the army

terms of holiness, such that sets in when a person pledges a value to the Temple, all men are equal.
2. While a person can create inherent holiness in objects, and dedicate them into the ownership of the temple, this cannot be done with human be-ings. People cannot be dedicated into holiness—they need to strive to it.
Having said this, it is curious how Chaz”al seem to reverse this idea in discussing these pledges. The Torah's chart, they say, only applies when one says “I dedicate my worth”. If you say “I ded-icate my value”, the sages say one should go to the slave market and see how much the pledged individual would be sold for in the slave mar-ket in deciding the appropriate amount to do-nate.
Chaz”al were aware of the tension inher-ent to the evaluation of human beings, each so vastly different. As the parsha makes clear, there is great danger in adopting measures that seek to amplify differences in people. On the other hand, placing every individual in a chart can be damaging, as it risks another form of hu-miliation, where any unique characteris-tics are boiled down to a number .The dia-logue between the parsha and chaz”al shows us the importance of this tension, between individuality and equality, as we try to make our contributions and live ho-ly lives ourselves.
This week's parsha concludes the book of Vayikra with a description of four optional donations to Beit Hamikdash. The last perek describes the hierarchy, giving the appropriate amounts to be paid if one pledges the value of a person, an ani-mal, a house, or a field. But the procedures for all four aren't the same. When a person wanted to donate the value of an animal, house, or field, he would show it to the Kohen, who would then give his best valuation for the particular object, which would then be paid by the pledger. The Torah emphasizes the assessment of the Kohen time and again using the phrase " והעריכו הכהן בין
טוב ובין רע כאשר יעריך אתו הכהן כן יקום"
“The Kohen shall evaluate, whether good or bad, as the Kohen shall evaluate so it will be” (Leviticus 27, 14, and with some variations ibid. 12, 18). It seems that the pledge created an inherent Kedusha in the object pledged and only the evaluation of the Kohen can decide the sum that can be given instead of this holy object.
But the process for evaluating a person is con-spicuously different. Instead of having the priest tell the donor how much his chosen person is worth, the Torah gives set sums for differently aged men and women.
Other forms of property are measured subjec-tively according to the priest, but the value of a person is given by a predetermined chart:
The Mishna in Arachim (3:1) emphasizes this by stating the this law contains both a chumra (stringency) and a koola (leniency); For an ex-ceptionally beautiful or strong person, this table of values will undervalue the man or woman's worth economically or otherwise. Meanwhile, for a less able individual, this chart actually places him/her at a higher value then actually befits him.
The Torah does not outright say why this distinc-tion exists, but it seems to me that we can go in one of two ways to understand this:
1. The Torah stresses the dangers of evaluating human beings and pitting their prices against one another. Subjectively evaluating is fine and good in inanimate objects such as fields or hous-es, or even with animals. Once we turn to hu-man beings it is inappropriate. The Torah is well aware that people will evaluate each other in different contexts, such as buying slaves or pay-ment of damages, but it wants to stress that in

Masada is certainly one of the most well-known tourist attractions in Israel. Located in the Judean Desert overlooking the Dead-Sea, it was built as a fortification during the Herodian reign. Masada is Israel's second most visited location (after Jerusalem of course) likely due to the tragic story surrounding it. Towards the end of the First Jewish-Roman War, between the years 66 and 73, Judea suffered from perse-cution and terror at the hand of the Romans, including the destruction of the Second Temple (in the year 70) and the dramatic fall of Masada. With their back to the (Dead) Sea, encircled, and vastly outnumbered by the Roman troops, the last group of warriors leading the massive Jewish revolt against the Romans barricaded themselves in this fortifi-cation. It offered them an ideal position from which to defend them-selves for a long period of time. The site itself was captured by Jews from the Romans at the start of the Great Revolt in the year 66. The Jewish-Roman historian Josephus Flavius describes the Roman siege of Masada that spanned several months. Josephus wrote about the construction of a huge ramp that allowed the Roman Legions access for the final assault. The construction was halted as the besieged Jews launched a barrage of stones from the top of the mountain to repel the Romans. This was effective until the Romans began forcing captured Jews to build the ramp. At this point the Jews understood that they were doomed as it was clear that they would not kill their fellow Jews even if it meant their own capture and likely death. When the Romans finally reached the mountaintop they discovered that all men women and children (except a handful) committed mass-suicide, preferring to die than to be captured. Although Masada's fall is commonly seen as an act of heroism, it is actually a complicated Halachic question whether the mass suicide should be viewed as "dying in order to sanctify G-ds name" or plain suicidal murder. Natural-ly there are a variety of opinions about this issue, usually stemming from an ideological underpinning.
