Catechist’s Corner Lent. Is. Hard. Fasting is hard. Trying to pray more, to give more, is hard. And if you’re anything like me, during this time we can get caught up in the mindset of “I failed at my Lenten commitment” even after just one time of messing up. Or sometimes, we can actually get filled up with pride in staying strong in our Lenten commitments. But are these mindsets staying true to what Lent is about? Fasting is particularly difficult for me. This week alone, I know there were (at least) three times when I ‘slipped up’ and gave into temptation. A couple years ago, that would have killed me! I wouldn’t have been able to handle one slip up and would have given up on that fast for the rest of Lent from that point on. After speaking with many youth, I have learned that many of them (and perhaps many of you, as well) share that same feeling of, “Well, I failed once. I mind as well give up.” I have learned that it is precisely at this point where I need to think beyond my ‘failure’ and go back to the Word of God, particularly the scripture used on Ash Wednesday. “Even now, says the Lord, return to me…” (Joel 2:12) Even now. Even after failing, he is calling us to himself. And that is the reason for this season! God drawing us ever closer to himself. I know I am guilty of living Lent as a season that becomes quite self-centered, cornered by my own lamentations on how difficult this season is. My focus on the absence of whatever I am fasting from obscures my vision on what the true purpose of this season is, and I must be careful with what I fill the empty space of what I am fasting from in with. I think it’s important for us to reframe Lent. What we often thinking about is, “Okay, yeah, this is a time of sacrifice and suffering where I am just going to feel the ache that is caused by my sin.” Instead, let us think, “I am going to surrender these aches and bring them before God and let Him fill that space.” What if Lent were actually a time where we thought more about filling with the Lord rather than on emptying ourselves? In the absence of things that we usually put in His place, let us allow God to enter into those parts of our hearts that we think are aching for chocolate, for social media, etc., but in all reality are aching for Him. Lent is a time of attaching ourselves closer to the Lord. Ultimately, with this reframing, Lent becomes a time of increasing joy where we detach from the desires of the flesh and attach to the everlasting love of the Father.

A word from our Priest Friends, Peace be with you. I hope Lent is going well and that you are growing in your relationship with the Lord.. I’m dedicating this column to some financial things that have popped up for which I could use your help. St. Joe’s is in need of a new phone system. I believe the one we currently use is original to the building. If I’m wrong I apologize but it is definitely behind in terms of technology. Just to give two examples, it cannot show the caller ID that the phone company provides and we still have to use an answering machine to get messages. So, I’m turning to you and asking for help. If you or someone you know has expertise when it comes to phone systems for small businesses, please have them contact me. I’m open to using newer technology as long as it’s cost effective and reliable. The good thing is we aren’t desperate at this point. Nothing is broken. We just aren’t working as effectively as we could. Speaking of “wants”, the St. Peter and Paul Pastoral Council and Finance Council recently approved an update to the sound system. Even though we have the money to cover the costs, given how difficult the winter heating bills have been, it would be much appreciated if people could donate specifically to the sound system to help alleviate some of the costs. And, I do want to say a big “Thank You” to those of you who already have donated. There is another project that I would put in the “in an ideal world where we are given enough money” file called a Hearing Loop. It works with a person’s hearing aid to directly send the signal being broadcast over the sound system into the person’s ear. You don’t have to put on separate earphones, it just works with some piece of technology that the majority of modern hearing aids already have to allow people to hear. The thing that’s stopping us from providing this right now is cost. I’ve heard that it would cost between eighteen and twenty thousand dollars to purchase and install. But, for those of you who, like my Uncle Hermann, sat on tractors for so many years that it destroyed your hearing while you fed the world, this could mean being able to hear what’s happening at Mass for the first time in years. Lastly, I’m putting out a very early call for land. In the next 10-15 years, it is likely that St. Joseph Cemetery will run out of land for new plots. It’s hard to estimate exactly how long it will take because of several different factors but, suffice it to say, we are somewhat limited in the space remaining. In an ideal world, someone would leave 5-10 acres of land in their will that meets any requirements necessary for cemeteries that is also somewhat close to Bellevue/St. Joes. If you’re interested in doing this, please contact me at the parish office.

A Prayer to Be Open to God's Will Good and gracious God, I know that life can be unpredictable. Sometimes I know what is good and right, but I don't have the courage to do it. Sometimes I am so busy with my own affairs, I forget to see the needs of people in front of me. Sometimes I am set in my own ways, and I resist growing and learning. Help me, Lord, to be open to Your will. When You prompt me to do the right thing, give me the courage to do it. When those around me need my help, give me Your heart to love them. When I'm stuck in my own ways,

give me the grace to grow closer to You every day. Give me the trust and confidence of Mary. Let it be done unto me according to Your word! Amen.
