J. BRYAN APPEALS IN WILL CASE. Deficit for Its Last Year More Than $58,000 —Work Not Curtailed. However. With its facilities taxed to the utmost, and with demands upon it constantly growing, the Presby- terian Hospital, at Park-ave. and Seven tieth-st,, needs help from that part of the public which can afford to aid a worthy charity. Although the hos- pital's annual deficit has been growing, and amounted to more than J55.500 for the year ended September 30, the managers have not curtailed the work of the institution or lowered its standard of excellence in any department, having faith that the public will sooner or later appreciate the true value of Its services to the sick poor of the city and come to its support. In the year the hospital gave medical or surgical service to 40,190 persons. Of these patients. 68 per cent were unable to pay anything, and were treated fre> ; 6 per cent were on endowed beds, and there- fore v.ere not charged for treatment; 17 per cent paid only $i a day. and the remaining 9 per cent wer»» patients In private rooms, who were charged little mure than the cost of their care. The aver- aKe daily cost to the hospital of a ward patient Is &_' B a day. Over 30,000 persons made H.2l!> visits to the hos- pital's dispensary !n the year, and the dispensary furnished 82.45S prescriptions and 20,698 surgical rireFFincTs, the timely advice and treatment thus famished enabling thousands to continue their dally work and escape more serious sickness. To the flimytT ward 29,009 visits were made by G.495 persons. The hospital's electric ambulance re- pponded to 2.544 calls in the year, and this meant that hundreds of persons were snatched from the Jawi of death bv the quickness of the service. The ambulance is ready to dash off on a call at any hour of the day or night Its service cost $3,946 in the year and its revenue to the hospital amounted to ni. He Was Connected With a Chain inlowa— His Accounts All Straight. Des Moiues. lowa, Dec. 4.—G. D. Wood, president of the Hank of Colfax and director of other banks in lowa, committed suicide at his home in Colfax to-day by shooting himself through the head. Wood was forty-three years old. Domestic trouble is supposed to have caused the suicide. He was worth more than $250,000, and bis accounts were straight. Ex-County Treasurer A. W. Layman had J30,000 Polk County money deposited in Wood's bank at Colfax. He went there this afternoon, and Is closeted with the directors. Dec 4.-<3overnor Peabody at noon to-day Issued a proclamation putting Cripple Creek under martial law and suspending the writ of habeas corpus. The proclamation says that the sold camp is in a state of insurrection and rebellion and that the civil authorities are powerless. The blowing- up of the Vindicator mine and other acts of lawlessness are cited, and the Governor says that it Is impossible to control the turbulence of the camp by ordinary peace- able methods. The proclamation ends l>y ac- cusing the authorities of Teller County of being unwillingto make and making no practical at- tempt to protect life and property there. It does not atate in so many words that martial law has been declared and that the writ of habeas corpus is suspended, but officials at the Btate House «ay that both these things are Intended. The military will now deal with all alleged of- fenders and punish them. Governor Peabody bases his action on the de- cision of the Idaho Supreme Court, which de- clared that the act of the Governor of Idaho In putting into force to a limited extent martial law in the Co?ur d'Alene was in thorough har- mony with the constitution of that State. The constitutional provision relating to the isuspen- sion of the writ of habeas corpus In this State is similar to that of the Idaho constitution. Colonel Edward Verdeckberg, commander of the troops in Cripple Creek, was with the Gov- ernor when he dictated the proclamation. He left here for Cripple Creek later in the day with a copy of the proclamation. Wholesale arrests of strikers suspected of implication in the Vin- dicator explosion and other cases of violence will be made to-morrow. The "bull pen" will be enlarged so as to accommodate several hundred prisoners. MARTIAL LAW DECLARED, Soldiers Now Control in Cripple Creek. and there was a general rush to save Jewelry andother valuables.

The flames started In the servants' quarters, onthe third floor, and had gained considerable head-may before being discovered. The first intimationof the fire waa when Charles C. Van Anßlen. one of

the guests of the Inn. who was sitting In the offlcecorridor, noticed amoke issuing from one of the

called Mrs. McDevitU and asked where the smoke

was ooming from. An Investigation immediately

followed, and the entire third story was found to

he filled with smoke. The alarm was at once

given, and there was a general rush by th* guests

Deficit for Its Last Year More Than $58,000

—Work Not Curtailed. However. With its facilities taxed to the utmost, and with

demands upon it constantly growing, the Presby-

terian Hospital, at Park-ave. and Seven tieth-st,,

needs help from that part of the public which canafford to aid a worthy charity. Although the hos-pital's annual deficit has been growing, and

amounted to more than J55.500 for the year ended

September 30, the managers have not curtailed the

work of the institution or lowered its standard ofexcellence in any department, having faith that thepublic will sooner or later appreciate the true value

of Its services to the sick poor of the city and cometo its support.

In the year the hospital gave medical or surgical

service to 40,190 persons. Of these patients. 68 percent were unable to pay anything, and were treatedfre> ;6 per cent were on endowed beds, and there-fore v.ere not charged for treatment; 17 per centpaid only $i a day. and the remaining 9 per cent

wer»» patients In private rooms, who were charged

little mure than the cost of their care. The aver-aKe daily cost to the hospital of a ward patient Is&_' B a day.

Over 30,000 persons made H.2l!> visits to the hos-pital's dispensary !n the year, and the dispensary

furnished 82.45S prescriptions and 20,698 surgicalrireFFincTs, the timely advice and treatment thusfamished enabling thousands to continue theirdally work and escape more serious sickness. Tothe flimytT ward 29,009 visits were made by G.495persons. The hospital's electric ambulance re-pponded to 2.544 calls in the year, and this meantthat hundreds of persons were snatched from theJawi of death bv the quickness of the service. Theambulance is ready to dash off on a call at any

hour of the day or night Its service cost $3,946 inthe year and its revenue to the hospital amountedto ni.

Th.- Presbyterian Hospital acknowledges gifts forsmall or Large i^.;rns gratefully, and checks may bemade payable eithor to the hospital or to W. S. NEEDS OF PRESBYTERIAN HOSPITAL.

BANK PRESIDENT A SUICIDE.

Denver. Dec 4.-<3overnor Peabody at noon

to-day Issued a proclamation putting Cripple

Creek under martial law and suspending the

writ of habeas corpus. The proclamation says

that the sold camp is in a state of insurrection

and rebellion and that the civil authorities arepowerless. The blowing- up of the Vindicator

mine and other acts of lawlessness are cited, andthe Governor says that itIs impossible to control

the turbulence of the camp by ordinary peace-

able methods. The proclamation ends l>y ac-

cusing the authorities of Teller County of being

unwillingto make and making no practical at-

tempt to protect life and property there. It

does not atate inso many words that martial law

has been declared and that the writ of habeas

corpus is suspended, but officials at the BtateHouse «ay that both these things are Intended. The military will now deal with all alleged of-fenders and punish them.

Governor Peabody bases his action on the de-

cision of the Idaho Supreme Court, which de-clared that the act of the Governor of Idaho In

putting into force to a limited extent martiallaw in the Co?ur d'Alene was in thorough har-

mony with the constitution of that State. Theconstitutional provision relating to theisuspen-

sion of the writ of habeas corpus In this State

is similar to that of the Idaho constitution.Colonel Edward Verdeckberg, commander of

the troops in Cripple Creek, was with the Gov-ernor when he dictated the proclamation. He

left here for Cripple Creek later in the day witha copy of the proclamation. Wholesale arrestsof strikers suspected of implication in the Vin-

dicator explosion and other cases of violencewillbe made to-morrow. The "bull pen" will beenlarged so as to accommodate several hundredprisoners.
