In the Middle Ages, most artistic, legal, and historical production took place in and around books, which were produced in and belonged to monasteries, churches, universities, and the individuals who could afford them. Books were produced entirely by hand, which is why they were called manuscripts; illuminated manuscripts refer to those with hand-colored, drawn, and gilded pictures. Most books at that time were written in Latin, Greek, and Roman which was used in the Catholic Church. Only priests and well-educated people read Latin then. People were forbidden by law from translating the Bible into Italian, English, German, French, or other “local” languages.

    Feeding squirrels

M any people think that squirrels’ favourite food is nuts and seeds. It is not completely right, because they also like plants and insects and even small animals. For example, the Eastern grey squirrel feeds on amphibians, insects, small m am m als, eggs and bones.

At the sam e time plants make up the greater part o f their diet. They look for nuts, seeds, flowers and buds o f different trees. Squirrels som etim es eat mushrooms. They do not get food from natural sources only but also from people, who give them such edible things as peanuts, grapes, corn, zucchini, pum pkins, strawberries, carrots, apples, sunflower seeds and many other food items.

M any people are wrong when they think that human food is equally healthy for squirrels. For example, peanuts and corn are good for birds, but they are good for squirrels only in smaller quantities. The best choice for them are

Squirrels are rarely aggressive, that’s why feeding them is quite safe, though you may have to keep it in mind that they may carry parasites and infections and they may attack people when they are frightened. When feeding squirrels, pay attention to the warning signs around: in some cases it may be illegal.

If squirrels live around your house, you may install a feeder and put tasty things inside — these little anim als will greatly appreciate your effort.

    W hy the seasons change

All people live on a big space body that we call the Earth. It moves through the Universe and consists o f stone and lava. The Earth goes around the Sun m aking one full circle every year. Besides, our planet rotates around its own axis — an im aginary direct line going through the North and the South Poles o f our planet. One rotation equals one day.

The Earth is not placed vertically in space and has an inclination o f 23 degrees. This angle is responsible for the change of the seasons on the Earth.

It means that at different periods o f time some regions o f the Earth are closer to the Sun and get more sunlight and warmth. For example, the Northern Hemisphere is closer to the Sun in sum m er and it is warmer, while

in winter the distance increases and the Southern Hemisphere moves closer to the star. So the seasons depend on the intensity o f sunlight and how long the sun shines during the day.

The changes o f the seasons do not affect the whole surface o f the planet. The farther a country is from the equator, the bigger the differences between the seasons are. People living in two different hemispheres have different seasons at the sam e time period o f the year: when it is sum m er in Russia or Germany, it is winter in Australia. In tropical and subtropical regions the seasons differ from each other in the amount o f rain.

How to learn a foreign language effectively

Psychologists know that our brain learns many things by itself as long as we give it enough information and exercise. For learning a foreign language we need real communication where we do not only do exercises, but also work with different types o f information.

Each o f us has an inborn ability to learn a foreign language, which we should just make use o f Though in real life it is not always simple to find an opportunity to use a foreign language, especially if you do not leave your home country.

Still you can think o f a few ways o f using the foreign language you are learning. M ultimedia technologies give you a chance to watch film s in the

  • original or listen to foreign music. You may also use subtitles when watching a video. But never turn them on in your native language, because the studies have shown that this has no effect.

The Internet may also be a great educational means. People, who write m essages in foreign languages on forum s and in social networks and chat online with their friends from abroad, learn much faster.

If you like to sing along with your foreign songs, it is also very effective. You learn new words and expressions by heart and broaden your vocabulary this way. There are thousands o f combinations that you will use later in your real life. And when we sing, it does not mean that we do not think — on the contrary, we ask ourselves why this or that word is used and how the text is made up. Besides, it makes us think if it is possible to use another word instead.

    Are canned products healthy?

Fruit is healthy, it is obvious. And what about canned food? Such products seem really attractive and they last much longer than fresh fruit. Experts say that canned or tinned fruit cannot replace fresh fruit in any way. At least for a long period o f time. The fruit that you buy at the market or grow yourself is much healthier. It is just a good way o f getting the kinds o f fruit which are not available at a definite time o f the year, such as peaches in winter.

  • When you buy tinned fruit, you have to pay attention to the amount o f sugar inside. You may easily find this information on the label. In some cases you may find products which contain little sugar. And these variants are the most preferable and healthy. But it is not always the question o f sugar only: such fruit lacks vitam ins and minerals, too. This happens because o f the production process — to make the food last longer they prepare it in a special way using a high temperature.

Drinking the juice from the can is not recommended. But if you want to, then you should m ix it with drinking water to make it less sugary.

There is a very simple rule that everyone should eat five portions o f fruit and vegetables a day. It means that one portion is a handful o f fruit or vegetables. So we need three portions o f vegetables and two portions o f fruit. It is also possible to drink juice instead o f eating fruit.

You might ask if some fruits are healthier than others. There is no definite answer and the best decision is to eat as many different kinds o f them as possible, because they contain different substances which are necessary for our health.

The oldest tree in the world

It only seems that there is nothing special about this lonely tree in Sweden. But the spruce (an evergreen forest tree with leaves like needles) is probably the oldest tree in the world.

  • There is such а line in one o f the most popular songs: “I want to become as old as a tree...” Naturally, not as old as this Swedish tree. It is about 9.500 years old. It is not a giant tree, though, and stands only 5 metres tall and is located in Dalarna province in Sweden.

It was discovered in 2004 by Leif Kullman, a professor o f physical geography from one o f the Swedish universities. He gave it a name — “Alt Tjikko” after his husky dog. It was possible to learn how old the tree was thanks to the modern technology o f radiocarbon dating.

During the Ice Age the surface o f the ocean was about 120 metres lower. That’s why some parts of the modern North Sea between England and Norway were covered in forest a long time ago. This tree became so old, because o f cold and special weather conditions in the area. Generally such trees are not able to live so long.

The great tree does not look perfect any more. It is quite understandable, because the harsh weather conditions have dam aged it. But it is possible that the old tree will regenerate itself if the local climate gets milder in the future.

A guided tour, pre-booked only, takes tourists to the tree in summer. The other oldest trees on Earth are located in California, North Wales,

    Iran, Chile and Sicily.
