Our annual membership report is an opportunity to take stock: to review what has been delivered by your Islands’ Partnership in the last year, and to look forward to the opportunities for the next 12 months.
We’ve had a promising year; the results speak for themselves. Our visitor numbers continue to rise, building on 2014’s increase, but we are still a long way behind where we were. It is important not to be complacent and think that everything is coming back on track and how ‘it used to be’. We have much to do still to achieve those numbers of 10-15 years ago, let alone exceed them.
It would be a mistake to think the economy is better and occupancy is good, so why the need for the Islands’ Partnership? We must continue to support our Islands’ Partnership because it is the Partnership that has rejuvenated visitor numbers, attracting many first-timers, and embarked on a programme of improving the visitors’ experience. Our competition is improving their product all the time, so to stand still is to go backwards.
The Islands’ Partnership is not just about making sure we achieve enough visitors, however. It is also about protecting, nurturing and improving Scilly’s overall offer. On his recent visit, HRH the Duke of Cornwall spoke about our fragile economy and this coming year will see the Partnership enter a new phase – as a support and driver that will help deliver solutions for all business operators on the islands. Tangible benefits need to be sought to help create a thriving economy.
Already our new Executive Director, David Jackson has achieved much since joining from Bath eight months ago. He, along with the small team of dedicated staff and the Directors of the Islands’ Partnership, look forward to your continued support and hope you will encourage new members to join too. The Partnership is here to support all businesses on Scilly, for the benefit of Scilly.

PUBLIC RELATIONS
The past 12 months have seen the Isles of Scilly continue to enjoy tremendous media coverage, thanks in no small part to the 20 press trips that the IP has helped to coordinate and host. Our major features in BBC Countryfile Magazine, Red Magazine and The Guardian stand out as particular highlights and delivered truly ‘money can’t buy’ coverage for Scilly.
Much of this press coverage doesn’t just happen by chance. It’s often the result of weeks, sometimes months, of pitching to editors and journalists, hours of painstaking itinerary planning and the most professional and efficient communication and support from the IP team and our partners. And, let’s not forget – it’s also thanks to you, our members, who so often and so generously support us when hosting journalists and films crews. Thank you!
DIGITAL
In May this year, visitislesofscilly.com celebrated its first birthday – and what a first year! In the 12 months to May 2015, the website received more than half a million visitors – proving that the site really is Scilly’s window to the world and an indispensable marketing tool for our members.
Of course, our challenge is to convert more of these ‘lookers’ into ‘bookers’. However, with over 12,000 accommodation booking enquiries having been made via visitislesofscilly.com over the last 12 months, it’s great to see such clear evidence that the website is already working hard for advertisers.
BUILDING THE SCILLY BRAND
2
2014/2015 HAS BEEN ANOTHER BUSY YEAR FOR THE ISLANDS’ PARTNERSHIP TEAM DELIVERING ON THE MARKETING PROMISES LAID OUT IN LAST YEAR’S PROSPECTUS. ONCE AGAIN, OUR EFFORTS HAVE BEEN REWARDED AS VISITOR NUMBERS CONTINUE TO RECOVER, BUT NOW IS NOT THE TIME TO SIT BACK AND RELAX!
SOCIAL MEDIA
Our reach and penetration via social media continues to grow, providing a valuable opportunity to engage with new audiences, link our marketing activities, and harness the positive advocacy of our visitors both past and present. Over the last 12 months, our social media messages and content have reached over 2,500 people per Facebook post, demonstrating the power of social media and the opportunity we (all) have to continue to nurture this.
EMAIL MARKETING (E-CRM)
Thanks to the success of our website and other marketing activity, the Islands’ Partnership’s customer database has grown to almost 34,000 this year. After undergoing a thorough cleanse, this is now an incredibly high quality and highly-responsive audience, demonstrated by the phenomenal open rates we see every month on our Visit Isles of Scilly e-newsletters. With an industry average of around 18%, our open rates, which regularly exceed 30%, are exceptional and present a great opportunity to ensure Scilly remains front of mind.

Despite the ever-growing influence of digital media, the continued demand for – and results from – our print highlights its ongoing importance and the key role it plays in our marketing mix.
Once again, demand for the Visit Isles of Scilly Guide (brochure) this year has been extremely high.
Almost 28,000 were distributed in the first six months of 2015. Of these, it’s particularly encouraging to see that the proportion of direct requests (as opposed to ‘cold’ pick-ups from racks) has increased significantly compared with previous years.
We know that it works too - our 2014 visitor survey showed that a good proportion of visitors to Scilly found the brochure their most useful tool when planning their visit.
This year we also increased the print run of our day trip leaflet, produced in partnership with Isles of Scilly Travel, to a massive 190,000.
VISITOR SERVICES
In March this year, after a competitive tender process, the Islands’ Partnership was awarded the contract to run the Tourist Information Centre on St. Mary’s for the next two years. After a very short lead-in, we officially took over on 1st April, just in time for Easter.
At the time of our writing, in our four months of running the TIC, footfall and enquiries are up, proving that this vital face-to-face service remains just as important as ever to our visitors. Whilst it is still early days, there are clear opportunities to truly integrate the TIC function into the Partnership’s other marketing and visitor services activity – something that will start to add real value to both members and visitors alike in the months ahead.

CRUISE SHIPS
What can we say – what a year! By the end of September we will have welcomed 45 cruise ships to Scilly throughout the 2015 season. Equating to almost 18,000 passengers, the value of the cruise industry to Scilly is clear to see, and so important therefore that we provide them with the very best visitor experience.
We’re delighted to see that our new cruise ship Welcome and Ambassador programme has proved so successful. On several occasions we have received comments from passengers expressing genuine gratitude for the warmth of welcome and the fact that Scilly clearly cares about our visitors. A massive thank you must go to our team of ambassadors – all of whom give their time voluntarily. They are a credit to the islands!
EVENTS
Earlier this year we received the fantastic news that the Islands’ Partnership had been successful in securing just over £200,000 in funding from the Coastal Communities Fund in order to develop a new Scilly Events programme over the next two years. With a small delivery team now in place plans are underway for an ambitious event programme for 2016 that will create a significant new driver to attract additional visitors in both 2016 and subsequent years.
Walk Scilly is one of the events that will benefit from this investment. Our second Walk Scilly Weekender at the beginning of October is now on sale and promises a fantastic programme of walks and entertainment that’s sure to prove effective at reaching that all important autumn breaks market.
Looking back, our main Walk Scilly week in April was the most successful ever – with more than 500 walk places sold and many having sold out weeks in advance, thanks to our proactive marketing campaign and its growing reputation as a walking festival with a difference.ISLES OF SCILLY 2015

‘TOURISM IS VITAL TO SCILLY’ WAS A HEADLINE IN LAST YEAR’S ANNUAL REPORT. FEW, CERTAINLY NOT I, WOULD DISAGREE WITH THIS.
It contributes over £32 million to the local economy and supports more than 1,000 jobs on the islands alone. Its importance to Scilly has rightly been recognised in the Islands’ Futures strategic economic plan – and at national level, tourism is also increasingly being recognised as one of the country’s key economic drivers.
In last year’s prospectus we talked with cautious optimism about the first early signs of recovery in Scilly’s visitor economy. Indeed, 2014 saw the first increase in visitor numbers for more than a decade – around 6% up on the previous year. And all the indications suggest that this year looks set to be up again. These are encouraging signs, of course – but it is only the start. A return to anything like the visitor numbers the islands enjoyed at their peak is still a long way off; it requires a long term, sustained commitment to rebuild the economy and re-establish an Isles of Scilly brand that connects with today’s visitor – and, more importantly, tomorrow’s.
OUR ROLE
The Islands’ Partnership will continue to champion and lead Scilly’s tourism industry, working closely with our local industry and strategic partners both here and on the mainland to drive sustainable economic growth for the islands.
However, true to our full title as the Islands’ Tourism and Business Partnership, our role has and will continue to embrace a wider economic outlook. In the past year, we have further developed our relationship with key strategic partners including the Local Enterprise Partnership, VisitEngland, Cornwall Chamber of Commerce and Visit Cornwall. Locally, we have
continued to provide and facilitate professional training, development and business support, including our inaugural Scilly Business Week in March.
And on all the islands’ major strategic developments, we are continuing to play an active role, ensuring the interests of our members and the wider economy are being represented. Most recently, the decision to take a lead on the transport agenda is recognition of the critical role this plays in the economic well-being and growth of the islands. We are committed to enabling and facilitating appropriate solutions to the issues you have raised.
DAVID JACKSON Executive Director of the Islands’ Partnership
DRIVING A VISITOR ECONOMY
REACHING FOR MORE
MARKETING SCILLY
The Islands’ Partnership is committed to delivering world-class destination marketing that inspires more people to visit Scilly throughout the year. Our ambition is that they spend more whilst here and recommend others to come and visit our islands as well as return themselves.
Over the next year, we will:
• Acquire a deeper understanding of our existing and potential visitors
• Develop a single overarching and coordinated marketing strategy for the Isles of Scilly which is delivered via a partnership approach with shared responsibilities and actions
• Combine an ‘always on’ digital and PR-led approach with tactical marketing campaigns that take advantage of new and distinctive events, and value-driven packages and promotions that are timed and targeted for maximum effect
• Extend the reach and penetration of the Isles of Scilly brand, ensuring consistent usage and appropriate positioning at all times
• Increase the value and effectiveness of the media coverage for Scilly by establishing a more coordinated approach to destination PR across the islands
• Develop a focused plan to attract more overseas visitors from priority markets and
maximise the opportunities afforded through additional funding for the South West via VisitEngland
• Maximise the potential of visiting cruise ships with our partners to grow this market further
• Work on a plan and a shared approach for attracting more business to Scilly via the travel trade
• Establish the Islands’ Partnership as a centre of excellence in social media and digital marketing, with a clearer focus on content, engagement and performance
• Improve the understanding of how our marketing communications activity performs and better measure its effect. A marketing communications dashboard will be developed, providing a clearer focus on performance and digital metrics and an improved mechanism for reporting to members and stakeholders
• Build on existing, and develop new, partnerships that extend our reach, add value to the Scilly brand or have the potential to generate additional revenue
• Support our members to improve their marketing communications through the provision of training and mentoring and by facilitating access to expertise and financial support where available
WE HAVE SET OUT A CLEAR FOCUS TO DELIVER MARKET GROWTH THAT WILL SEE THE VALUE OF THE VISITOR ECONOMY INCREASE BY A FURTHER £5 MILLION BY 2017. SUMMARISED BELOW ARE SOME OF OUR PRIORITIES FOR THE YEAR AHEAD THAT WILL HELP US REALISE THIS AMBITION:

SUPPORTING BUSINESS; IMPROVING THE EXPERIENCE
In last year’s report, we recognised the need to improve the visitor experience on Scilly – and resolved to bring together our various sector groups to begin the drive in earnest. We made progress in some areas – the new IP-led Community Transport Initiative, the Retail Workshop, event brainstorms and meetings, for example. However, there is still a great deal of work to be done if we are to truly understand our audience (as it is today, and as it will be tomorrow), and shape and facilitate the provision of a world-class visitor experience that truly satisfies our demanding visitors and is sustainable into the future.
Over the next year, we will:
• Pursue opportunities to improve the quality of the product and visitor experience currently on offer, as well as identify and develop new and distinct visitor experiences that have the potential to drive increased visits
• Improve our understanding of Scilly’s visitor economy and its performance and to ensure this is communicated more effectively to potential funders and key stakeholders
• Deliver visitor information services of the highest quality to ensure visitors are made to feel welcome and are well informed enabling them to explore the islands and gain maximum enjoyment from their visit
• Deliver the Coastal Communities Fund Scilly Events project and its associated outputs such that our annual events programme becomes a more effective driver of the islands’ visitor economy
• Influence and shape improvements to the public realm
• Ensure that the natural environment and special qualities of the islands are protected and that development adheres to the principles of sustainability and wise growth
• Encourage businesses and visitors to adopt sustainable practices and responsible behaviour that help to protect the unique environment on which we depend
• Ensure that Scilly’s businesses have the requisite skills and are able to access appropriate advice and support to become more competitive, as well as to develop the capability and capacity to increase productivity
• Provide industry leadership and considered input to relevant local and regional policies, strategies, and major developments that impact on the visitor economy of the islands
• Ensure that the Isles of Scilly and business community are able to take full advantage of opportunities through national partners including VisitEngland and Visit Britain, UKTI, Local Enterprise Partnership etc
98
PROVIDING LEADERSHIP
The Islands’ Partnership recognises that in order to succeed and to continue to garner respect, it has to deliver value at all times for its members and key stakeholders.
To this end, we will seek to strengthen the capabilities and capacity within the IP team, forge new commercial partnerships and secure additional funding streams regionally, nationally and at European level. Already, we enjoy closer relationships with VisitEngland, Visit Britain, Quality in Tourism, the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce and Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership as well as First Great Western and Isles of Scilly Travel. Further relationships will be developed in the coming months, particularly as the Islands’ Partnership takes a leading role in finding transport solutions for the islands.
Finally, we will continue to provide sector and industry leadership on Scilly, to represent and be the voice for our members and to provide strategic insight and input on matters affecting or impacting on Scilly’s visitor economy.
There is still a great deal of work to be done if we are to consistently provide a world-class visitor experience that truly satisfies our visitors…

In a world where there is an ever-growing volume of marketing ‘noise’, the choice of where to advertise can be overwhelming.
That’s why it’s so important to ensure you invest in the most effective channels – and that means us.
“”
In a world where there is an ever-growing volume of marketing ‘noise’, the choice of where to advertise can be overwhelming. That’s why it’s so important to ensure you invest in the most effective channels – and that means us.
The figures speak for themselves. Digitally, thanks to its no.1 ranking in Google, a high proportion of visitors to Scilly start their planning by visiting visitislesofscilly.com.
We also know that the Isles of Scilly Guide continues to be incredibly effective, often being used alongside the website to find accommodation and plan a visit. It stands out as a real exemplar in destination print.
For non-accommodation businesses, our new Pocket Map Guide for 2016 will provide an invaluable opportunity to put themselves in front of visitors whilst here. It will be Scilly’s main in-destination map for a large proportion of our visitors.
Opportunities will be available for businesses wishing to feature in the Cruise Ship Welcome Packs and, of course, the Tourist Information Centre remains an incredibly important touch point for visitors, assisting with enquiries before a visit as well as whilst here.

OUR PRINTED GUIDE
The 2014 and 2015 Isles of Scilly brochures have received widespread recognition for being amongst the best examples of any destination guide anywhere in the country. This is borne out in both the demand for the brochure and the resulting response.
All the more important therefore that we don’t let complacency creep in and simply ask for the ‘same again please’.
The 2016 Guide will see a further evolution on the last two years with a fresh approach to content and stories that will inform and inspire in equal measure.
Retaining the same popular size, advertising space will be similar to 2015, although premium full page opportunities will be available for businesses who want to gain greater stand-out for their brand.
• 2015 rates held for 2016
• More opportunities for non-accommodation businesses to showcase your brand with premium advertising
POCKET MAP GUIDE
New for 2016 is an on-island Pocket Map Guide, featuring beautifully annotated maps of all the islands, coupled with information about where to eat and what to do whilst visiting Scilly. Non-accommodation businesses will have the opportunity to feature on the Pocket Guide which will replace the current “Things to Do” hand-out in the Tourist Information Centre.
• Only available to IP member businesses
• Fantastic “bundled” advertising packages available
• Grab the attention of visitors here on the islands
CRUISE SHIPS
Also new for 2016 will be the opportunity for businesses to have a flyer or leaflet inserted into Cruise Ship Welcome Packs. Our “goody bags” which contain island maps and information, a brochure request card plus a Visit Isles of Scilly branded postcard, competition and fridge magnet are handed out one between two passengers (on average) – either on-board ship or on the quayside. You’ll have the opportunity to pick and choose those particular liners you wish to target, or opt for the whole “seasonal” package.
• Opportunity to reach up to 18,000 Scilly cruise ship passengers
• Attract them to your business during their visit
• Limited availability!
TOURIST INFORMATION CENTRE
The Tourist Information Centre remains a vital service to visitors on Scilly. Between April and early August this year, we handled 28,000 enquiries – face-to-face, telephone and email. In 2016, we’re offering a 12-month deal – which will, once again, include leaflet racking, digital screen ad, A5 poster and a listing (as appropriate) in the weekly What’s On. If you opt to advertise in the Pocket Map Guide and/or the 2016 Guide as well, there are great savings to be enjoyed.
• Make sure our thousands of visitors know about your business
• Save money by purchasing a “bundled” advertising package that includes the TIC
