Lois Price Spratlen ‘54 came to Hampton University from just a few hours’ drive away in Charlottesville, Va. But on the waterfront campus, she felt like she was in another world, she told those closest to her.“She had grown up in a poor household, in which her mother was a washer woman and her father, a railroad yard worker. It was at Hampton that she had her first bath in a porcelain tub (previously they used a tin tub). Their home toilet was an outhouse,” said Dr. Thaddeus H. Spratlen, Mrs. Spratlen’s husband of 60 years.

From her humble beginnings, however, Lois Spratlen earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from HU, and attributes the University with preparing her for clinical practice, graduate study and a successful career. Spratlen spent most of her career as a faculty member in psychosocial nursing at the University of Wash-ington, Seattle. Upon her death in March 2013, she bequeathed a $1.1 million gift to the HU School of Nursing (SON).

Mr. Spratlen, his son Dr. Townsend Price-Spratlen and daughter Patricia Spratlen-Etem, visited the campus in October to facilitate the gift with Vice President for Development Laron Clark, Provost Dr. Pamela Hammond and other University faculty and administrators. Dr. Thaddeus Spratlen isn’t sur-prised by his wife’s generosity, because of her affinity for HU.

Hampton University Alumni Magazine | 5

“Her (Lois Spratlen’s) mother, Ora Ferguson Price, had the greatest influence on her values and her life,” he said. “I believe she would put Hampton second.”

Spratlen’s gift will establish The Lois Price Spratlen Endowed Chair (LPSEC) within the SON, and the selected professor will focus on mental and com-munity health research. Upon the appointment, the first of its kind at the SON, the LPSEC will help to ensure the future of the mental and community health research focus at HU, as the school seeks to grow its profile and impact regionally and nationally, officials said.

A shortage of nurses who have advanced practice ed-ucation and certification, and a challenge for schools to prepare graduates well versed in health care reform and maintaining wellness, are among the reasons why family and community mental health nursing was selected as the focus for the endowed chair.

“This opportunity is momentous,” said HU SON Dean Deborah Jones. “It affords us the opportunity to expand our research projects to include mental, and community health research. This funding is also the impetus for our department broadening our reach and training students who can serve in the mental health community.”

Spratlen was recognized posthumously by induction into the SON Hall of Fame May 9, and the Uni-versity archives will eventually house her published writings.

Spratlen’s widower, a professor emeritus of market-ing at the University of Washington, Seattle, said his wife’s gift is an extension of how their entire genera-tion feels about philanthropy. This year, he provided

the funding to establish a $25,000 endowed scholar-ship in the name of the nursing class of 1954, of which Lois Spratlen was a part.

“We come from a generation where giving back is just something that you do with appreciation that you’ve earned enough to have something to give. She took to heart the Booker T. Washington message of ‘lifting as we climb,’” he said. “My hope is that her generosity will encourage other Hampton alumni to consider planned giving. It’s a matter of sharing and giving back at whatever level their circumstances will permit. The Nursing Class of 1954 Endowed Scholarship fulfills one of the goals of giving back to Hampton that (my wife) wanted to share with her classmates. In a Feb. 23, 2012 letter to them, she urged all of them to join her in supporting the scholarship. Thanks to the generosity of Lois and some of her classmates, the Nursing Class of 1954 will be remembered for giving back to Hampton in a way that can be sustained over time.”

Once the scholarship is available, an applicant must be a full-time, second- or third-year nursing student at HU, and selection will be based on academic merit and financial need. With continued eligible academic performance, the scholarship award may be renewable for one additional year. The University’s Office of Financial Aid shall determine financial need.

“The entire school of nursing faculty are eternally grateful to the late Dr. Lois Price Spratlen and family for their generosity,” Jones said.

Dr. Lois Price Spratlen passed away on March 30, 2013. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Thaddeus H. Spratlen; five children Pa-

mela, Patricia, Paula, Khalfani and Townsend; nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and close friends.

Born in Charlottesville, Va. in 1931 Dr. Price Spratlen finished Jefferson High School in 1949 as the class co-valedictorian. She applied to the University of Virginia, but was rejected because she was black. The admissions director told her that she would never be admitted to the University of Virginia. This rejec-tion was devastating to her. Her neighbor comforted her and said that she was going to call Hampton Institute. In turn, Dr. Price Spratlen was accepted for admission and offered a scholarship.

Dr. Price Spratlen challenged barriers at the Uni-versity of Virginia, and she pushed for change at Hampton, as a student majoring in nursing. In 1952, she advocated for and succeeded in getting a policy change that would allow students to be married while completing their degrees. She earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing in 1954; her master’s degree in com-munity mental health nursing from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1972; and her Ph.D. in Urban Planning from the University of Washington in 1976.

Dr. Price Spratlen’s professional career is nothing short of phenomenal. After a 33-year career she retired from the University of Washington in 2009 as professor emerita of psychosocial and community health nursing and ombudsman emerita. She also served as ombudsman for sexual harassment and became the first African-American and first nurse to serve as University ombudsman. Her many profes-sional credentials and honors included National Board Certification as a psychotherapist, American Acad-emy of Nursing Fellow, Washington State Nurses Foundation Hall of Fame Inductee, and recipient of the following awards: Gretchen A. Schodde Lifetime Achievement Award, Samuel E. Kelly Distinguished Alumni Award, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Com-munity Service Award. In 1998, she was named Ombudsman of the Year by the California Caucus of College and University Ombuds.

A graceful and courageous leader, she used her many talents to serve the public’s interest. Dr. Price Spratlen was a member of the Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses Organization and established its endowed scholarship fund for students of African heritage. She was chair of the King County Board of Ethics and served on other boards as well, including Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound and the Metropolitan Seattle Urban League.

Dr. Price Spratlen was a gifted indi-vidual who was known for helping other people and seeking justice and fairness where she lived and worked. She and her husband, Dr. Thaddeus Spratlen, also shared many interests. For example, he became an associate member of the Hampton Alumni Association’s Puget Sound Chapter. They were board members of the University of Washington’s Multicultural Alumni Partnership (MAP) where they demonstrated their commitment to promoting diversity and supporting educational opportunity for the benefit of diverse students, faculty and staff. In supporting peace and social justice activities they both were board members of the Abe Keller Peace Education Fund.

At the time of her passing, Dr. Price Spratlen was working on a second book about her practice and service as on academic ombudsman. Her first book, “African American Registered Nurses in Seattle: The Struggle for Opportunity and Success” (2001), revealed personal stories of the nurses’ educational pursuits, employment and professional experiences with discrimination in Seattle.

Dr. Price Spratlen was an exemplary alumna of HU about which she always spoke so fondly. She was a strong supporter and longtime member of the Na-tional Hampton Alumni Association, Inc. where she served as an officer in the Far West Region and also provided leadership for the Puget Sound Chapter in the Seattle area. She was an avid financial supporter of HU and expressed a strong commitment to give back in a significant way.

Minority Men’s Health Initiative Project manager Cheryl Evans and Deputy Project Manager Sylvia Z. Martin

Hampton University is leading the way in a major initiative to combat health disparities in minority men. In July 2013, the University received a $13.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities to combat and reduce selective health disparities in minority men.

“African-American men are disproportionately affect-ed by major health issues,” said Hampton University President Dr. William R. Harvey. “This important initiative will focus on research, education, training, and intervention outreach.”

The grant established the HU Regional Transdisci-plinary Collaborative Center Minority Men’s Health Initiative (MMHI) The Center is a collaborative effort with HU is leading the way along with several

other historically black colleges and universities as partners. The university partners involved are Jack-son State, Clark Atlanta, Howard, North Carolina A&T and St. Augustine’s.

This Initiative has identified six areas to receive a comprehensive approach to narrowing the gender gap of health disparities. These areas are prostate cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, melanoma in Hispanics and violence prevention. The researchers will implement a sustainable and transferable collaborative research model in all of the six areas to positively influence the healthy outcomes of minority men.

The MMHI research activities encourage partner-ships between faculty members at the partnering HBCUs to increase the institutions’ contributions

engineering lab.

HU Received a $13.5 Million Grant from the NIH to Fund Initiative

toward eliminations of health disparities. In par-ticular, the initial research projects supported by the grant will foster the following inter-institutional partnerships: prostate cancer (Clark Atlanta and Hampton), cardiovascular disease (Jackson State and Hampton), violence prevention (Hampton and Howard) and diabetes and obesity (North Carolina A&T and St. Augustine’s)

HU’s Men’s Health Initiative is focused on reducing health disparities, however, the ultimate goal is to improve the health of all Americans. For example, according to the American Cancer Society, African-American men have a 59 percent higher incident rate of prostate cancer than white men. HU’s leadership believes that health and longevity should not be dependent on where one lives, or based on socioeco-nomic status, gender or race and ethnicity.

“The NIH has invested a large amount of money towards eliminating health disparities that permeates throughout the American health care system,” said Raymond Samuel M.D. Ph.D., associate profes-sor of chemical engineering at HU and principal investigator for the grant. “There is an increasing

need for the development of innovative, transforma-tive, culturally-sensitive interventions in the areas of basic and clinical research, clinician and researcher training models, patient and community education programs, and outreach programs.”

Harvey praised the Hampton Team for their hard work securing the grant and said, “this could not have been done without the leadership of Dr. Pamela V. Hammond and the Hampton team of Drs. JoAnn W. Haysbert, Charrita D. Danley, Elnora D. Daniel, Raymond Samuel, Nicholas Kenney (co-principal investigator), Linda Malone-Colon, Bertha Davis, Patricia Sloan and Ms. Alisa Rodgers.”

Since July the HU team and the partnering institu-tions have embarked on the planning phase of the five-year initiative. Hampton is working with the five HBCU partnering institutions to complete the design and development components of the clinical and translational research projects in cancer, cardio-vascular disease, violence prevention, diabetes and obesity. The researchers are also laying the foundation for the implementation of the innovative HU TCC Pilot Project, aimed at expanding the participation of

HBCU faculty members initiating/expanding men’s health disparities research activities.

Samuel believes HU TCC will have a significant effect and foster more HBCU collaborative efforts, and strengthen the case for HBCUs to receive ad-ditional funding.

“This grant will allow HBCUs to further real-ize that we can make a significant contribution to NIH-funded workforce in general and specifically contribute to solving major healthcare issues that plague various segments of the African-American community,” he said. “The HU-TCC will foster long-lasting collaborations with key stakeholders in the minority men’s health community to usher in a new era of improved health in our communities.”

“The pulse of the people of Virginia” is how Kelly Harvey Gill describes the function of the Hampton University Center for Public Policy.

When created in 2008 under the leadership of Alphonso Jackson a former United States Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary, the center for public policy was tasked with laying the founda-tion and advancing theory into policy.

Now, Gill takes the charge as second director of the Center. She is dedicat-ed to working on different initiatives and bringing awareness to students and the community at large.

“Hampton University takes seriously its mission of educating and service. Throughout its history, Hampton has initiated a number of programs to uplift the community and society overall,” she said.

The Center is poised to meet the challenges of the 21st century and beyond by contributing publications, speakers, forums and new age social media engagement that will advance the current and future ideas and

trends in the public policy arena.

“When it became clear that there was a need for the general population to look to an objective and non-partisan source for information and solutions, the University tasked the Center for Public Policy to serve as the pulse of the people in Virginia,” said Gill.

Gill earned her bachelor’s degree in English from Spelman College, and a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Maryland College Park. She worked as a television journal-ist for 12 years. She later went on to earn a J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh, School of Law.

For the 2013 Virginia General Elec-tion, the Center conducted polls on the potential outcome of the races. For a total of nine weeks, the Center worked diligently to survey voters on who they thought would be the next Governor, Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General through tracker

polls. The polls conducted by Gill and her staff projected numbers closer than USA Today.

Richmond political insider and former political adviser to Governor L. Douglas Wilder, Paul Gold-man said, “While the Hampton University Poll is new, it surely seems to be the best one this year based on the quality of their work.”

Now that election season is over you can expect bigger and better things from The Center.

“The Hampton University Center for Public Policy has come out of the gate with noted distinction,” said Bill Thomas, HU Associate Vice President for Governmental Relations.

“The Hampton University polls were well con-ducted and its expert analysis and presentation by Mrs. Gill certainly elevated the creditability of Hampton University among major pollsters and media across America,” said Thomas.

The Center is headed in the right direction with new ideas.

Gill says “Future topics will deal with health, education, transportation, violence and other concerns and needs of the citizens of Virginia. The Center also offers opportunity for students to be part of the Student Advisory board that comprises a diverse group across multiple disciplines, that work cohesively with the staff to create new ideas and a working agenda for the upcoming academic school year.”

MONIQUE FERRELL RAISES THE BAR

Hampton University Alumni Magazine | 11

MONIQUE FERRELL RAISES THE BARHamptonian’s passion for serving soldiers

crowns her the first African-American

woman to be appointed to the Senior

Executive Service in the U.S. Army

Breaking through the glass ceiling, Monique Ferrell ‘85 is a living in-spiration for young women of color today. As the first African Ameri-can woman to be appointed to the Senior Executive Service (SES) in the United States Army Audit Agency (AAA), Ferrell has proven herself as a hardworking no nonsense profes-sional. Whether in the office or out of the country, Ferrell’s main goal is to make things better for soldiers.

Ferrell has been with the AAA for 27 years and is currently the director

of seven divisions managing ap-proximately 175 employees. As the Deputy Auditor General for Man-power, Reserve Affairs and Training Audits, she is responsible for audit-ing human capital, force protection, force structure, and training. The AAA’s mission is to serve the Army by assessing risk and providing solu-tions through independent, internal audit services for the benefit of the American Soldier. Their vision is to be a world-class audit organization of respected professionals that antici-

12 | Hampton University Alumni Magazine

pates change and exceeds client expecta-tions. As an integral part of the Army team, AAA strives to improve the Army by providing timely, value-added services and by fostering employee growth, inno-vation, integrity, and accountability.

Ferrell’s personal values are identical to AAA with an emphasis on integrity. “If you don’t have values, what are you standing on. It is essential to have a solid set of values before going into the workplace because you want to have something to lean on when you have to make difficult decisions. If you are true to your values, you can always look yourself in the mirror and be comfortable with who you are and what you have done,” she said.

Her core values come from a strong foundation from her parents. Although Ferrell’s parents separated, they main-tained a good relationship for the sake of the family and instilled a strong work ethic in her and her siblings. A native of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Ferrell gained much of her leadership experience at a young age. She was a Girl Scout for 12 years which allowed her, during her senior year of high school, to be governor for the day. That experience opened Fer-rell’s eyes up to the world of politics.

In 1981, Ferrell left her beloved island and headed for the States. As an incom-ing freshman at HU, Ferrell enrolled in the rigorous accounting program. The curriculum has prepared her profession-ally for her career. During her junior year at HU, Ferrell joined the general accounting co-op program for a full se-mester where she discovered her love for auditing, secured a job immediately after graduating, and married Major General Robert S. Ferrell. As students at HU, the couple secretly got married without tell-ing her parents.

“Oh that’s a long juicy story. I got mar-ried while I was on my co-op assignment in D.C. My parents and most friends didn’t know we were actually married be-fore we had our wedding in St. Thomas,” she said.

The couple has been in love ever since, and she credits her husband for helping

Hampton University Alumni Magazine | 13

her become a phenomenal leader. Ferrell left HU with a degree, great friends and her husband of 29 years.

Major General Robert Ferrell serves as the Commanding General, U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Com-mand in Aberdeen, Md. Ferrell and her husband have two children, Robert II, a graphic designer at Goucher College in Md, and Michael, a sergeant in the Army, assigned to the White House Communi-cations Agency.

“Being a military couple is not easy,” said Ferrell, However they have found a system that works. When asked how she balances being a wife, mother and having a thriving career, she says, “It’s about trust, communication, and being willing to make sacrifices.”

Ferrell and her husband have collectively made many sacrifices and still do today. She is currently living in Northern Vir-ginia near her office, while Major Gen-eral Ferrell lives and works in Aberdeen, Md. While Ferrell was working on her graduate degree at Georgetown Univer-sity in Washington D.C., her husband was stationed in Germany.

“I have got to be the most fortunate husband in the world. Monique is not only brilliant, beautiful and a women of extraordinary character, she is an ac-complished senior public servant and a devoted, wonderful mother. Despite her demanding career as an Army Civilian leader, Monique has always been the

foundation of our family life. Always giving, always supportive, always set-ting the example for everything a wife, mother and hard-dedicated professional should be. There have been many times where she has selflessly set aside some of her own career goals for the betterment of our family. If you have ever read the poem ‘Phenomenal Woman’ by Maya Angelou you have some idea of her ex-ceptional nature - because Monique truly is a ‘Phenomenal Woman!’” says Major General Robert Ferrell.

Although she does not physically see her family every day, she makes sure they remain the top priority in her life along with her relationship with God. “My God is first. There is nothing I can do without Him,” says Ferrell.

Moving around from countries to cities is second nature to Ferrell. She has lived in Germany three times which gave her the opportunity to visit France, Spain, Poland, and the Canary Islands. From January 2010 to November 2011 Ferrell traveled to Kuwait, Iraq, and Afghani-stan. While living in the war zone of Afghanistan, she overcame the most chal-lenging part of her career, but also the most rewarding. Ferrell expressed how the comforts of life were different, but a highlight of her time in Afghanistan was when she saw her son Michael.

“I felt relieved at first, then pretty happy. I woke up in the middle of the night to play ‘Where’s Waldo’ trying to figure out where she was on my base with no way

of contacting her. After getting some much needed help and following the right bread crumbs, driving her back to my camp was probably the best five minutes I ever spent in Afghanistan!” said Michael, the Ferrells youngest son.

Ferrell loves working hands on with sol-diers and their families, because she sees how it directly affects her own family.

“Her most admirable trait is her willing-ness and ability to give endlessly to ev-eryone. She is dedicated to her career and best serving the people she leads, a model Army spouse, and a (now retired) but still ever – so supportive ‘soccer mom’,” says Robert II , Ferrell’s eldest son.

FORMER MISS HU CROWNED

MISS VIRGINIA 2013Desiree Williams

Nita Booth ’00 inherited the crown in 1998, after Nicole Johnson was chosen as Miss America. At the time, Booth was the first African-American to have the title.

“It is an honor to join the sisterhood of Miss Virginia, and to simultane-ously embrace another Hamptonian and another black woman who has worn this crown,” said Williams. “I respect all the women who compet-ed, and am excited about the ways this title will position me to help others.”

Williams was the Miss Virginia runner up in 2012, and has earned several pageantry titles including Miss National Sweetheart, Miss Peninsula and Miss Arlington. She earned her undergraduate degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation from HU in 2011, and is now a graduate student in the Uni-versity’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program. She served as Miss HU 2010-2011, and in the latter year was featured in Ebony magazine as one of 10 Historically Black College

Hampton University graduate student and Former Miss

HU, Desiree Williams, was crowned Miss Virginia 2013.

The victory was historic for the state of Virginia, as well

as HU. Williams is only the fourth African-American to

wear the crown, but is the second Hamptonian to do so.

or University (HBCU) Campus Queens. In pag-eantry, Williams’ platform has been “Fit and Fun” which promotes having a healthy lifestyle. She is a licensed yoga instructor.

Dr. Shelia Maye, the Department of Music chairperson, and executive director of the Miss HU Scholarship Pageant, said she isn’t surprised at Williams’ successes.

“Desiree has been a standout from the beginning. She is the type of person who is disciplined and trains hard for anything in which she’s involved, academics or otherwise,” Maye said. “We appreci-ate her achievements, as well as her beauty. The Hampton University community is extremely proud of her being crowned Miss Virginia.”

Williams’ Miss Virginia victory later landed her at the 2013 Miss America competition in Atlantic City, N.J. Though she was not crowned there, Williams, an aspiring physical therapist, said she embraces the experience and is completely com-mitted to serving in Virginia.

Along with Williams and Booth, Caressa Cam-eron and Nancy Redd are the other African-American Miss Virginia title holders. Booth is a Chesapeake, Va native, earned a Mass Media degree from HU, and was a junior at the Univer-sity when she became Miss Virginia.

Booth said she thoroughly enjoyed her time as Miss Virginia, and her experience with the Miss Virginia organization. She is currently a married mother of three and a general manager for Regus, a company that provides workspace for compa-nies.

“Regardless of race, it’s about the job you do,” she said, “and the service you give to the community.”

“I’m extremely excited for (Desiree), Booth said There have only been three other African Ameri-cans to hold that title, so that speaks very highly of her.

Lady Pirates win 2013-14

ALL-SPORTS AWARD

The Hampton University Department of Athletics won its 13th straight Mary McLeod Bethune Women’s All-Sports Award, denoting the overall strength of the women’s program in 2013-14, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced in May.

The MEAC presented the University with a check for $20,000 during a reception at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Atlanta, Ga.

“I extend congratulations to Hampton University and President William R. Harvey, Director of Athletics Novelle Dickenson, and all of the outstanding individuals, including staff, coaches, and student-athletes, who were in-volved in winning the Mary McLeod Bethune Award,” MEAC Commis-sioner Dennis Thomas said.

HU women’s programs totaled 98 points over the past academic year, thanks to conference titles in indoor track & field, basketball, outdoor track & field, and volleyball. The women’s basketball program won its fifth straight MEAC Tournament crown (and its fourth straight MEAC regular-

season crown), while the track & field squad took home its third straight MEAC outdoor title and its fourth straight MEAC indoor crown.

The volleyball team won its first-ever MEAC Tournament crown after win-ning the MEAC Northern Division regular-season title for the first time in program history.

Florida A&M was second in the women’s standings, while Norfolk State was third.

The Mary McLeod Bethune Award, named after the founder of Bethune-Cookman University, awards the top overall women’s athletic program during the course of one full academic year. The first Mary McLeod Bethune Award was given to Delaware State in 1987.

Hampton leads all MEAC schools with 13 such awards.

Points are awarded in a descending order beginning with 14 points for champions or first place regular season finishes.

LADY PIRATES VOLLEYBALL TEAM CAPTURE FIRST EVER

MEAC CHAMPIONSHIPThe Hampton University volleyball team made history in November at Coppin State’s Physical Education Complex, defeating the host Lady Eagles 3-2 (25-17, 19-25, 25-27, 25-16, 15-11) in the title match of the 2013 MEAC Championships.

The Lady Pirates (19-10) won their first-ever MEAC crown – their last conference tournament title was in 1990 in the CIAA – and they matched a program Div. I record for wins in a season.

Junior rightside Vendula Strakova (Brno, Czech Republic) added Most Outstanding Player honors to being named MEAC Player of the Year, after leading the Lady Pirates with 25 kills and hitting .362 for the match. She also had four aces.

Strakova is now the fifth Lady Pirate ever to record 1,000 career kills, sit-ting at 1,023.

Junior outside hitter Krista Kraskura (Kuldiga, Latvia) added 12 kills and 13 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Senior setter Bibiany

Fonseca (Uberlandia, Brazil) had 46 of Hampton’s 52 assists, and senior libero Sheileen Pagan (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) had a team-high 18 digs.

First-year head coach Karen Weather-ington was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Coach.

“I am so proud to join the many Hampton University programs in bringing home a MEAC Champion-ship,” Weatherington said. “Today was a great day for our team and our five seniors (Fonseca, Pagan, Petra Parros, Andjela Petrovic, and Ioana Kalfinova) – who are now the corner-stone of a foundation for champions to come.

“I’m so proud that (Strakova) was named Tournament MVP as well as Player of the Year. She definitely performed like a champion today.”

“There have been so many firsts this season and I am elated for my play-ers,” Weatherington said. “I’m glad to see all the hard work pay off. They’ve all put in so many hours … that many people don’t get to see.”

Senior Josh Gopeesingh

Named Rhodes Scholar Finalist

Hampton University senior Josh Gopeesi-ngh, a chemical engineering major, was named a finalist for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship in November.

A native of Trinidad, Gopeesingh is a student in the Honors College and captain of the HU sailing team. He was awarded the Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar Award this year as well. Gopeesingh has a 3.76 grade-point average and during the sum-mer months has conducted research at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Syracuse University. He also started an organization with his family that helped build an orphanage, along with helping people approach businesses and companies for financial support.

Out of approximately 1,000 applicants who are endorsed by their respective uni-versities, only 200 are named as finalists in hopes of becoming an American Rhodes Scholar. Gopeesingh competed in the international division that only named six finalists.

“In preparing for the interview, I read about Martin Luther King, Jr., Mahatma Ghandi, Abraham Lincoln, Derek Walcott, and many other world-changing people. Not only was I better acquainted with great

people who came before me, but also world events and issues every country around the world experience. I went in with the idea that I had won regardless,” said Gopeesi-ngh.

Upon graduation, Gopeesingh aims to complete a master’s in engineering, special-izing in sustainable development. His ultimate goal is to have an active role in Trinidad’s government under the energy sector and implement better ways of getting utilities, like water and electricity, to the impoverished communities.

Although Goppesingh did not become HU’s first Rhodes Scholar, the Rhodes Scholarship Committee encouraged him to apply again next year.

“In addition to being a young man of sterling character, great affability, athletic accomplishment, and tremendous academic achievement, Josh is humble,” said Dr. Sabin P. Duncan, Director of Hampton University’s Freddye T. Davy Honors Col-lege, “In my opinion, his humility is the bow on the gift of his potential as a Rhodes Scholar.”

Nursing school receives $1.3 million grant for increase veteran enrollment, graduationThe Hampton University School of Nursing (SON) was awarded a $1.3 million grant by the Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration. The funding will be dispersed over a four-year period, and was given to only nine schools. HU was the only Historically Black College or University (HBCU) to be awarded.

The project is entitled the Veterans Educa-tion Transition for Success (HU-Vets), and seeks to increase veterans’ enrollment and graduation from HU’s School of Nursing

baccalaureate curriculum, with counseling, mentoring, curriculum adaptation, test preparations and appropriate recognition of related military education and experiences. The principal investigator of the grant was HU Assistant Professor of Nursing Dr. Sherri Saunders-Goldson, herself an Air-Force veteran. Goldson worked with Dr. Hilda Williamson, the SON Assistant Dean, and Dr. Bertha Davis, both retired Army Reservist, on the HU-Vets project.

CAMPUS NEWSJustice Thomas urges graduates to believe that they can make a change

The Honorable John Charles Thomas told the Hampton Univer-sity Class of 2014 that they have a heavy burden.

“Not many graduates get to say, I am part of the journey to lift our

people. That’s a heavy burden, but that’s the Hampton way.”

Thomas, a retired justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia, gave a resound-

ing address as the keynote speaker for the 144th An-

nual Hampton University Com-mencement on May 11.

Thomas told the graduates that they are in a position to make a real difference in their communities.

“You leave Hampton at the top of your game. All you got to do is believe that I have enough in me to change the world,” he said. “This is the time. This is the time, the world needs the blue and the white.”

Hampton University President Dr. William R. Harvey challenged the 919 graduates to be the best they can be.

“It is now your responsibility to create a place for yourself in this ever changing world.”

Also as his signature, Harvey gave the graduates some pearls of wisdom includ-ing urging them to, “pay themselves

first,” and “to fight racism ev-erywhere it rears its ugly head.”

Linda Tarrant-Reid ’72 has written a must-read for educators, historians

and young people alike. “Discovering Black America” is sure to have readers

imagining what it was like to be an early African-American, while prompting

discussions about what has changed and still needs to evolve. An unprec-

edented account of more than 400 years of African-American history, set

against a background of American and global events is captured in Tarrant-

Reid’s most recent work as she poignantly relays the past and captures experi-

ences and events that have forever shaped America as we know it today.

Tamelyn N. Tucker-Worgs ’93, an associate professor of political science

and African-American studies at Hood College, has authored “The Black

Megachurch.” In the book Tucker-Worgs analyzes nearly 150 black mega-

churches and the three factors most necessary for social engagement. In dis-

cussing these churches’ theological orientation, organization of community

development initiatives, and gender-based spheres of labor and leadership,

she demonstrates that while some churches have lived up to their potential,

others have a long way to go.

Alfonso D. Wright ’03 is author of “I Live: A Novel Without Heroes.”

After a questionable arrest, a young man returns to his old neighborhood

with a new perspective on life. Bitter from his experiences, he struggles to

balance society’s standards and life’s harsh realities. Thought provoking and

suspenseful, I Live: A Novel Without Heroes has the natural allure of sex,

love, and violence with a twist. Wright whisks the reader into the mind of an

intelligent outlaw experiencing the nuances of an unyielding and unjust city.

Unforgettable and enlightening, this antihero’s journey will leave you debat-

ing society’s idea of right and wrong.

Danica Williams ’99 is author of “Her Cousin’s Keeper.” In Williams’ nov-

el, the days leading up to Candace Coleman’s wedding are hectic to say the

least. Work, dress fittings, wedding rehearsal, holiday shopping, and being

a mommy, have her running ragged. Reports that her fiancé, NBA rookie

Michael Marshall, has been arrested while at an away game bring Candace’s

dream of a happy future with the man she loves crashing down around her.

“Her Cousin’s Keeper” will keep readers turning the pages to discover what

happens next.

Jean D. Moody-Williams ’78 has written “Transitions, Trust and Triumph,”

an inspirational book of daily devotions in which Moody-Williams chronicles

her experiences into daily words of encouragement and valuable information

on support and resources available for other caregivers and those that support

caregivers.

Dana S. Hubbard ’86, award-winning independent film producer and play-

wright, continues the saga from “Every Dog Has His Day” with his follow up

novel, “Never Play With A Woman’s Heart.” Essence Magazine has touted

Hubbard’s most recent novel as “a refreshing voice in fiction.” The roman-

tic novel tells the story of a man torn between desire and obligation. Myles

Stewart is given a fresh start when Courtney Dennis, assistant warden, helps

him with an early release from prison. Little did he know, returning the favor

would be way more than he bargained for.

“Warning Signs – What Every Woman Should Know: A Dating Guide”

written by Danielle E. Ward ’00 helps readers identify relationships by type,

avoid common dating traps, see what a healthy relationship looks like and

even discusses when to bring up the question of marriage.

“Journey To The Woman I’ve Come To Love” is Miki Turner’s ’80 first

book, a photo book, which celebrates the love that women from all walks of

life have for themselves. The book contains 91 photos taken by Turner and

asks just one question: At what point did you fall in love with yourself? It

was published in January 2013. Among the women featured are: Halle Berry,

Myrlie Evers-Williams, Diane Nash, Gladys Knight, Nichelle Nichols, An-

gela Davis, Leslie Uggams, Nicole Ari Parker, Judith Jamison, Toni Braxton,
