All About Myself As A Teacher "Learn To Know,
Know To Learn.”
"Know Thyself " , a saying of Socrates ; by understanding the meaning and realizing the gist of this saying I have been preparing myself to be a teacher. There were also some authentic reasons which inspired me to come this noble profession. For me teaching is one of the best to serve the nation as well as to do the best for my country. In Bangladesh, though teachers are ill paid and they earn a very small amount of money, especially in rural areas but they are respected everywhere by common people. Here teachers are called the nation builder and considered as an honest man.
I'm Ayan Chowdhury came here to the U.S.A. at George Mason University to take part in a six weeks long professional development training program by getting a fellowship in TEA program through IREX under supervision of the U.S. Department of States. In Bangladesh, my mother land I passed the S.S.C. examination from Victoria High School, H.S.C. Examination from Srimangal Govt. College under the Board of Intermediate & Secondary Education, Comilla. I earned my Bachelor Degree in Humanities group from Srimangal Govt. College under The University of Chittagong. I achieved my M.A. degree from Dhaka College & B.Ed (Bachelor in Education) degree From Comilla Govt. Teachers' Training College under Bangladesh National University.
The name of my institution where I have been serving as a teacher is “Victoria High School, Srimangal.”It is situated in Srimangal upazila under Moulvibazar district of Sylhet division. It is a tea producing area. I joined this school 11 years ago on March 25, 1996. We were 104 persons applied for 3 posts in response to an advertisement published in a national daily and 87 candidates were invited for attending in an employment ( written & viva ) test. My joys knew no bound when I received my appointment letter sending through the post office. A little drop of tears with happiness fell from my eyes. It was a great pleasure to me that I would go to join as a teacher in that school where I studied for 5 years from Grade 6 to 10 and completed my secondary education.
There are 1200 ss (students) in my school and we are 21 teachers here. There are 5 classes and they are divided in 14 sections. On an average every section has more than 80 ss. In our class routine there are 8 periods in five days ( from
Saturday to Wednesday ) and 4 periods only on Thursday. On an average I suppose to take 36 periods in different classes per week. The duration of a period is 40/45 minutes. So it is not a easy task for me as well as my colleagues to conduct and manage the classes. Here most of the ss do not get any kind of support for learning as their parents are fighting against poverty and are not much educated.
But there are some positive things in my school: SS are obedient and very eager to learn; they obey the rules and respect the teachers. Teachers are hard working and sincere.
In my school I try my best to do something better for my ss. I love them; they also love and respect me. My school starts on 9.45 a.m. and ended on 4.00 p.m. every day. I 'm the T.U.O. (Teacher under Officer) of B.N.C.C. (Bangladesh National Cadet Core) platoon in my school. I 'm not a singer but I love music & I can recite Bengali poem. In addition to my class activities officially I'm the in-charge of the school cultural department. For the betterment of my ss, with the help of my colleagues I organize poem reciting, debate and music competition and cultural function .But I do not get any remuneration for this extra-work. So often I stay in my school till 5 / 5.15 p.m.
My pride & pleasure as a teacher : During the time of our liberation war in 1971 I was a child of only 2 years . Often I think in my mind that if I were a grown up boy at that time I could fight against our enemy, the Pakistan Army . Though I missed it , I get pleasure in my mind as a teacher that I 'm fighting with one of our great enemy which is illiteracy to make my mother land free from darkness. I'm serving in my school staying with my parents and family and also living in my own city, SRIMANGAL where I was born & brought up . It's a pleasure to me.
I still have been enjoying enough my profession and get charm what I enjoyed 11 years ago at the date of my joining. I want to learn more methods and techniques of teaching and always want to be a good teacher to my students.
Field Work Reflection after a U. S. school visitSeptember 25, 2007: I’m lucky enough that I got an opportunity to visit on a U.S. school as field work. It is the part and parcel of TEA program. GMU authority and the teaching staff and faculty members of The College of Education and Human Development has chosen some of the best school in U.S.A.
My visiting school is Kenmore Middle School, 200 South Carlin Spring Road, Arlington. The name of mentor teacher is Ms. Judyth C. Herrera.
Today is my first field work at Kenmore …. . Early in the morning at 7:30 I start to my school by a taxi cab. I reached there at 8:45 a.m. At first I went to the office room and introduce myself with two beautiful, nice ladies who are the office in-charge. After making a phone call to my mentor by one of the office staff a boy came from my mentor’s class and requests me to go with him. Within 3 minutes we reached her (my mentor) class. My mentor and her SS welcomed me cordially. It is HILT class of 7th grade. Here is only 16 Ss .My joys knows no bound when the SS showed my country, Bangladesh in world map in reply of their teacher. I observed the class, teacher’s activity and Ss’ activity as well.
I also looked and observed the school environment of Kenmore.
Which are noticed and attracted me much these are -------------
1. Beautiful classroom with all modern facilities.2. Well equipped classroom with computer, power point
projector, CD Rom, white board, marker etc.3. Classroom is big but each and every class has only 16 – 20 Ss.4. Ss get more freedom. 5. There is no monotonous work, Ss are enjoying the class.6. Ss have easy access to teacher.7. Teacher applies many methods/strategies for better learning
and understanding of Ss.
But in my country, Bangladesh:
1. Our classroom is not well decorated. 2. There is no/nothing modern equipment.3. Blackboard with chalk- duster.4. Classroom is small but each and every class have more than 80
Ss.5. No freedom for Ts and Ss.6. Ss have no easy access to Ts.7. Teacher works hard but sometimes it becomes monotonous for
Ss as well as for Ss.

courses are designed to assist students in passing the SOL exams by
strengthening students’ test-taking skills as well as their understanding of
course concepts this method is an excellent way to review the material
and check SS understanding of the material. Everybody is involved and
the weaker SS don’t fall behind as they have the paper in front of them to
support to support their confidence.
4. The teacher hands out SS papers. The class goes over the list of questions
discussing every single one and SS check the answers on the papers given
to them and grade to them The procedure involves intensive discussion
since these are not true/false questions but mostly Who- questions based
on the discussed novel, poem, essay etc. The teacher collects the papers.

About my IT training:Ayan Chowdhury, (Fall 2007), Bangladesh
Before coming here in U.S.A. computer is known to me but I was not much familiar with different programs of computer and IT facilities. I’m a High School Teacher came here to take part in a professional development program. As a TEA fellow now I’m in George Mason University, Fairfax, VA. Here I got an opportunity to be trained in computer and IT.
In Innovation Hall I attended computer and IT classes. We got a wonderful chance to learn about computer and IT under the supervision of a group of young, energetic, handsome IT specialist headed by Mr. Mohan Mantena.
His other colleagues are Mahek Chowdhury, Amir, Krishna they all are very helpful and cooperative. They tried hard to train us a group 21 teachers from Bangladesh, Kirgizstan and Tajikistan. Mohan is a man of patience with smiling face. Whenever we asked him about computer he just then solved the problem. Seeing to Mahek I remember my sister who is staying in Bangladesh. Amir is a man smiling face and Krishna, the tall guy is very sincere.
We learned more about computer and its different programs, such as MICROSOFT Office-2003 & 2007, MS PowerPoint, and MS Excel and so on.
At Robinson Hall we learned much more about computer from Dr. Steeley and George Flowers. Here Kasturi and the nice lady who is the in-charge of the computer lab helped us a lot.
A special thanks to all of them. They always remain in my mind. Going back to my country whenever I will sit with computer, their nice face will be visible in front of my eyes.
