Published by: Dr. Gargi, Director From Director’s Desk The Central Sericultural Germplasm Resources Centre, Hosur successfully completing 25 years of its establishment continued mandated activities while implementing several in- house and collaborative networking research projects. The projects focussed on abiotic stress, climate resilience, pre-breeding etc. to aid crop improvement including exploration of avenues for value addition through non-sericultural uses. Survey and exploration was conducted in the Ziro valley of the state of Arunachal Pradesh and a wild species of mulberry silkworm i.e. Bombyx huttoni Westwood was collected which is a new record for Ziro valley. The centre enriched its silkworm germplasm stock adding three bivoltine Bombyx mori mutant genetic stocks from CSR&TI Mysore enhancing the total silkworm stock to 473 [Multivoltine 81 and Bivoltine 369; Mutants - 23] accessions. Fifteen exotic and seven indigenous mulberry collections from KSSRDI, Thalaghattapura were added to mulberry field gene bank enriching the total mulberry stock to 1291 (Indigenous - 1006; Exotic 285) accessions. The silkworm and mulberry genetic resources were conserved ensuring maximum diversity with emphasis on systematic analysis of genetic diversity, genetic integrity, population structure, species relationships, identification of trait specific promising accessions etc. Five research projects were in progress on mulberry (one in-house, one in-house collaborative and three collaborative projects of other institutes) and five on silkworm genetic resources (one in-house, three in-house collaborative and one collaborative project of other institute).
