The World Switches Off The eighth Earth Hour was celebrated this week as people, towns and cities

around the world switched off electrical items for one hour in the evening.

Hundreds of millions of people turned off their electricity and some of the most

iconic buildings around the globe dimmed their lights. From the Eiffel Tower in

Paris, via the Empire State Building in New York to the Opera House in Sydney –

cities that are some of the biggest consumers of electricity joined in.

Starting at 8:30pm local time, the Earth Hour Switch Off is a symbolic show of

support for climate change. The movement which is organised by the World

Wildlife Federation (WWF) has now become a truly global event, supported by

people on every continent. Dermot O’Gorman who is the head of the WWF told Al

Jazeera Sport, “Earth Hour has become a tradition across the world; it’s now an organic,

people-powered movement – which is fantastic”.

However Earth Hour has received some criticism for not actually doing anything

to reduce electrical use around the earth. Economist Ross McKitrick has said that

cheap electricity has been terrible for modern life and Earth Hour is worthless.

Others such as author Bjørn Lomborg, has said that Earth Hour should promote

solar energy as that would help the environment less.

The first Earth Hour was held in Sydney in 2007 with two billion people turning

off their lights for one hour to support reducing electrical use. The Australian city

continues to be at the heart of the movement with many of Sydney’s restaurants

also joining in by using candles to light diners’ tables. Additionally, this year

Sydney’s iconic Opera House will glow ‘pink’ so as to encourage people to use

greener home appliances like LED light bulbs.
