Case Study Objectives:
Context for Community-Campus Partnership (C-C P) at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus (CU AMC)
Role of the Library
How our commitment is contributing to the campus mission – and making a difference
Our Context:
CU AMC “one square mile of biosciences”
Schools of Medicine, Dental Medicine, and Pharmacy; College of Nursing; consolidated Graduate School; multi-institutional School of Public Health; 2 hospitals, soon to be a 3rd
CU HSL
Context, AMC and HSL:
CU HSL supports “4 pillars” mission: teaching/learning, clinical enterprise, research, & outreach and community engagement
Traditional strength = support for teaching/learning
Since move to AMC, outreach activities redoubled
Context, Aurora:
Per “social determinants of health,” neighborhoods of North/Original Aurora experience some of greatest health disparities in all CO – adjacent to AMC
Aurora is gateway for international refugees to CO
Community-Campus Partnership (C-C P)
Goal: long-term partnerships for: illness prevention health improvement, and economic development
Hub for building relationships/opportunities between AMC and community groups
C-C P Membership:
30+ community and campus groups, including: City of Aurora Aurora Public Schools Denver Foundation 2040 Partners for Health CO School of Public Health Health Sciences Library
Governed by Authority Board HSL Director (Perry) on Board
More about C-C P:
$1M+ funding from CU AMC, SOM Dept. of Family Medicine, Denver Foundation
Inclusive/participatory model for engagement based on democratic principals and group-affirmed norms
Meet at Aurora Strong Resilience Center
Why the Library?
Library as physical/virtual gateway to campus
Community engagement one of HSL’s 4 missions
Longstanding partner w/ APS in health info literacy curricula
Build on past successes
The Value Proposition
In marketing, VP is an innovation making an organization attractive to customers
While we see HSL as “natural” for the C-C P, others positively surprised that HSL: Stages events and engagement
programing Provides literacy instruction Welcomes community
C-C P Immediate Goal:
Working from social determinates of health model, jobs and workforce preparation are top priorities: AMC as “Anchor
Institution” for North/Original Aurora
Community wealth-building informed by Democracy Collaborative
HSL Contributions:
Leverage “library as place” to convene and welcome
Deploy library values (access, right to read, privacy, self-empowerment) while participating and leading by example Ex. Perry as panelist at
wealth-building conference
Our Ongoing Commitments:
10+ years’ deep engagement in pipeline/pathway programs
Introduce campus, health, information sciences to Aurora community, especially URM children
Information literacy instruction (smart Google searching)
Ideas for Transformational Change: Procure locally
Hire locally
Leverage assets (access, meeting spaces, networks)
Share (unrestricted resources, our domain knowledge, knowledge of our workplaces)
Summary:
Always more to do but we are raising the bar while delivering on our missions
Challenge – commitment not always shared, not always understood
Library involvement sometimes a surprise but always an “easy sell”
Idea of Library has staying power!
