Welcome
We extend a very warm welcome to all children, their parents and carers.
John of Rolleston is a school full of responsible, happy and
enthusiastic children and adults. We offer a wide range
of learning experiences to promote imaginative thinking,
which in turn helps each of our pupils to engage and enjoy learning, whilst persevering to reach their full potential.
The acquisition of the basics of English and Maths are the
basis for all learning, but we value a broad and balanced
curriculum which in turn develops children creatively,
physically, socially and spiritually.
We are extremely proud of the children who leave our
school. Opportunities are provided both in normal school
hours and in extra curricular activities to extend the
children’s experiences.
Education is a partnership. We are an open and caring
team who value the co-operation between home, school
and the local community. This partnership is vital if we
are to equip our children for their future lives and foster
in them a thirst to aim high for lifelong learning and to
share and support those around them.
If you would like further information or to visit school,
then please contact the Headteacher via the school office.

What happens at lunchtimes?
Children can go home for lunch, have a hot school meal or bring their own packed lunch. All
Infant children are eligible for a Universal Infant Free School Meal (UIFSM) as part of a
government initiative. We hope that all children will take up this offer. For pupils in KS2,
payments for school lunches are made via the cashless electronic system, details will be
issued when your children is enrolled in school.
If you are entitled to receive Free School Meals (FSM) due to your financial
circumstances then we encourage you to apply for FSM irrelevant of whether your child is
in EYFS, KS1 or KS2. This enables the school to receive extra funding, so please contact
the school if you need any assistance.
All the children have the opportunity to play outside at lunchtime and they are provided
with a variety of games and activities organised by the Play Leader. If the weather is not
suitable for outdoor playtime, the children will be brought inside.
Do you have a Parent -Teacher Association (PTA)?
Our Friends of John of Rolleston Primary
School (FOJORPS) organisation is very
successful. They provide events for children
and adults and fund raise for the school. The
highlight of their calendar is ‘Community day’
but there are numerous other events which are
enjoyed by all. Why not join them and make
new friends, as well as helping the school.

Our school John of Rolleston Primary School is a Foundation school and a member of the successful Burton Co-operative Learning Trust (BCLT). We are situated on the outskirts of Burton-on-Trent in the lovely village of Rolleston-on-Dove. We are a school of about 400 children housed on two sites. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stage One (KS1) children are taught on the Sherborne site, School Lane. The Key Stage Two (KS2) pupils are based on the Alderbrook site, Chapel Lane. John of Rolleston educates children from 4 to 11 years old. There are extensive grounds with fields, a netball court, a tyre park, traversing walls, activity line markings, a vegetable garden, a pond and nature areas. Children start the EYFS in the September after they are aged four and follow the EYFS curriculum. Children then spend two years in KS1 and four years in KS2. We have a Deputy Headteacher on the KS2 site and an Assistant Headteacher on the EYFS/KS1 site. Each class has a teacher and support from a teaching assistant. Other members of staff are administrative, caretaking, cleaning and lunchtime supervisors. At John of Rolleston, we all work together as a team to ensure the children get the very best from their education. We are all professional partners. The development of the ‘whole’ child is our main priority and by working in partnership with you and the wider community, we will ensure that they ASPIRE to achieve their full potential.

Will my child get homework? Homework is an important way of
developing the partnership between home
and school. You will be made aware of the
amount of homework your child will receive
and on what days. The amount of homework
your child receives will increase as they get
older but we do not believe in giving too
much, as they have already completed a
whole day of learning before they get
home!
How do you deal with bullying? Bullying is not tolerated at John of
Rolleston. We have a Positive Behaviour policy which
details the expectations of all stakeholders and there is
also an Anti-Bullying policy. Children are always taught
not to accept bullying and to report any incidents to an
adult immediately. All children are very aware of the
school rules and the consequences of bullying or poor
behaviour. We work together with parents to ensure
John of Rolleston is a bully-free school. Pupils are
rewarded for good behaviour.
How do you keep my child safe in school? Once the children are in school, the external security
gates are locked and the only means of entry is via the
secure access entrances on each site.
Children are not allowed to leave school premises during
the day unless collected by an adult.
Older children in KS2 walk home, if
the parent agrees that it is safe for
them to do so.
If you need to send an unknown adult
to collect your child, we will not let
them do so unless the parent has
called and informed us—this is for
your child’s safety.
Ofsted 2014 - ‘Pupils say
that bullying of any sort
is very rare, and this is
supported by the school’s
records….. All pupils say
that they have great
confidence that staff will
deal with any issues that
arise quickly and
effetively.‘

We learn more by looking for an answer to a question and not finding it than we do
from learning the answer itself.

Other questions you may have? What is a typical day?
Early Years Foundation Stage
9:00am - 12:35pm then
1:35pm - 3:20pm
Key Stage 1
9:05am - 12:35pm then
1:35pm - 3:20pm
Key Stage 2
8:55am - 12:00 noon
then 1:00pm - 3:30pm
All children are registered at the
beginning of the morning and afternoon
session.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage
children will learn through structured
play and focused, adult led teaching.
They will spend time learning outside as
well as inside the classroom. Every child
will have an English and Maths lesson
every day. Other subjects are taught
throughout the week, although not all
subjects will be taught every week. For
instance, if geography is being taught in
one half term there may not be any
teaching of history until the following
half term.
What if my child is off school? The expectation is that every child
attends every school day, unless they
are ill or there are exceptional
circumstances for their absence. A
leave of absence form should be
completed to request the time off (see
the school website).

An innovative and creative curriculum We offer the children at John of Rolleston a balanced
curriculum with a wide range of subjects and learning which is
personalised to their individual needs. Our curriculum has
four common principles:
Child centred;
Skills based;
Consolidation and celebration;
Flexible and dynamic.
These principles ensure that we meet the needs of the
academic, personal and social development of each child. We
will enable children to make decisions about their learning and
have a clear understanding of their next steps. Our curriculum
will ensure that our children become independent, responsible,
enthusiastic and confident lifelong learners.
Every child will have daily English and Maths lesson. We also
teach History, Geography, Art, PE, DT, French, Computing,
PHSE, Science, Music and the Performing Arts. Children also
learn about six major religions in religious education:
Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, Sikhism and Hinduism.
This enables the children to have a moral understanding and
knowledge of religious beliefs and practices.
Ofsted 2014-
‘Teachers have high
expectations of what
pupils can achieve
and set them tasks
that make them think
and work hard.‘

Assessing children’s progress
Teachers are constantly assessing children’s learning and
progress. They do this through observing children in
lessons, discussions with children, marking written work
and by testing. Children are encouraged to persevere and
are always aware of their achievements and what they
need to do next to improve. As they get older, children
are taught to assess their own learning so they can take
responsibility for their own progress.
Parents are informed of their children’s progress and
attainment at termly parent consultations in the Autumn
and Spring Terms and in their child’s Annual Report. If
there are concerns with the rate of progress a child is
making, their teacher will contact the child’s parents/
carers and likewise parents should do the same.
Pupil performance data is available on the school’s website.
Additional needs—including children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)
The staff, in conjunction with the Special Educational
Needs & Disability Co-ordinator, work together to enable
all children with special needs to thrive in a secure
environment.
Additional needs include children who:
have a specific learning difficulty;
have a specific behavioural or physical disability;
have English as an additional language;
find it difficult to fully concentrate on learning
because of other worries or issues in their life;
are more able in their learning.
The majority of support given to these children will take
place in class. However, when we think it will help the child
to make more progress, they may be taught in a small group
on a one to one basis outside of the classroom. External
agencies may also be involved if necessary.
Ofsted 2014—’Pupils make good progress in reading, writing
and mathematics and leave school with standards that are
above average. Teachers have high expectations of what
pupils can achieve and set them tasks that make them think

Before and after school clubs
The Forum—Out of School Care Club The Forum is a term-time, out-of-school care club
which runs on the Sherborne Site as an extension of
the school day for the children. It is fully Ofsted
registered and they said that it was ‘OUTSTANDING’
when they last visited.
The Forum is open from 8am until the beginning of the
school day and from the end of the school day until
6.00pm. Sessions are booked in advance and paid for
half a term in advance.
Extra Curricular Activities The school facilitates many extra curricular clubs, as
we believe that children should have the opportunity to
experience a variety of activities in order to engage and enjoy as well as developing socially and physically.
The clubs are often run by teachers, but outside
agencies also come in to run the activities straight
after school. Clubs have included: football, hockey,
rounders, netball, gymnastics, fencing, cheerleading,
gardening, art, ICT, drama, dance, recorders, choir,
chess, French, drums and electric guitars.
All of our clubs are well attended.
As a school we enter a
number of different
competitions organised
by school, the Dove
V a l l e y S p o r t s
Association and the
Burton Co-operative
Learning Trust.
We encourage as many
children to be involved
in sport as possible, as
this helps them to
ASPIRE!

Well being Behaviour Creating an environment in which our children engage and
enjoy learning is central to help them make progress. Our
expectation is that children behave well and we work with
parents to achieve this. Children need to be clear about which
behaviours are unacceptable and feel comfortable talking to
the adults in the school if they have any concerns.
Healthy Eating We promote healthy lifestyles. During the morning break, the EYFS and KS1 children are
provided with a piece of fruit. Children on the KS2 site may bring in healthy snacks or
can purchase healthy snacks. For lunch, our cooks always
make sure that the children are provided with a healthy
balanced school meal. If your child has a packed lunch,
please only include low sugar foods and still drinks; water
is best. Nuts are not allowed, as there are a number of
children with severe allergies.
Illness In the event of your child being ill, parents are asked to contact the school office on a
daily basis to advise us of their absence. This confirms the whereabouts of your child to
us and that they are safe but unfortunately ill.
Medicines As a school we can only administer prescribed medicines to children provided a
medication form has been completed (available on the school website). For any long term
medical needs a Care Plan will be drawn up between school and home. If your child has
asthma you will be asked to provide an inhaler which will stay in school, however
infrequent it may be used.
Safeguarding Children , Child Protection and Safer Recruitment The school will take any reasonable action to ensure the safety
of its pupils. In cases where there is reason for concern that a
child may be subject to ill treatment, neglect or other forms
of abuse, staff have no alternative but to follow Staffordshire
Safeguarding Procedures and inform Social Services of their
concern. All staff, including voluntary helpers are subject to
rigorous Disclosure and Barring Service checks and we follow
safer recruitment guidelines. We have close links with the
police and the local community and any concerns relating to
safety and security are always reported and acted upon
promptly.
Ofsted 2014- ‘The behaviour
of pupils is good. They work
hard in lessons and try their
best to produce good quality
work. Pupils are fully prepared
for lessons and move quickly
and quietly between tables
when necessary. ‘
10
Our Community John of Rolleston is at the heart of its
community and welcomes everyone. Local groups
hire out the school facilities and all of our
community members are invited to our fairs and
events.
Our children are taught to share and support each other and are aware of their wider
community.
Parents and Carers There are many ways in which parents and
carers can support the school and their
children’s learning. Most importantly it is vital
that you support your child in coming into school
on time every day, ready to learn.
You best help when you share your child’s
learning experiences by talking to them about
their day and supporting them with their
homework. Our more confident readers are
almost always the children who read at home
with their parents.
We also welcome parental help during the school
day. This may be spending time with one class
and supporting their learning or hearing
different children read. Please contact the
office if you are interested in becoming a
volunteer.
To facilitate communication between parents
and school, we have a Parents’ Focus Group,
which is a group that represents parents’ views
on whole school issues. Further details are on
the school website.
We also need your help to organise fund raising
and fun events for both children and parents.
Would you like to be a part of the Friends of
John of Rolleston Primary School (FOJORPS)
committee? If the answer is yes, then speak to
us or the chair of the committee.
