“Construction-Safety-Desk” for Implementation of Safety at the work-sites of Small and Medium-sized Construction Companies. (SMCC).

4th March being celebrated as the National Safety Day by all Industries in India, including the Construction Industry is an opportune moment to take a hard look at the status of Safety at the sites of the Construction Companies.

Large Construction Companies know the critical role of Safety in ensuring the satisfactory execution of any construction work, and they have the necessary Technical and Financial resources also. Therefore, the Safety-status at their construction sites is satisfactory.

However, the Small and Medium-sized Construction Companies (SMCC) have inadequate Safety- awareness, and inadequate resources required for implementing Safety measures. Therefore, the Safety-status at their sites, is unsatisfactory.

SMCC constitute 90% of the Construction Industry, and their poor Safety-performance is, a matter of serious concern to the whole Industry, and therefore, action has to be taken to enable the SMCC to implement Safety measures, in spite of their real handicap, namely, inadequate Safety-awareness, and inadequate Technical, and Financial capability.

Safety at Construction Sites – K.R. Khudanpur That has to be done by Organizations of the Construction- Industry, such as the Builders’ Association of India, and Professional Institutes like the Institution of India, and the National Safety Council. They have the resources, but what is required is more commitment to the cause of Safety. An action-plan for that purpose is suggested as follows.

Thefirststepistoopenattheseorganizations,a“ConstructionSafety Desk” manned by a Safety Professional to provide a forum for interaction with the SMCC. It should be given adequate publicity targeting the SMCC in particular. Through this forum, Safety related information / advice may be given to the SMCC to meettheirspecificneeds, andwithintheirtechnicalandfinancialcapacity, and with a participative and persuasive attitude.

The funds required for this activity can certainly be made available by the Organization, and reasonable fees also may be charged for the professional services. The functioning of the Construction-Safety Desk will be not only be helpful to the SMCC, and but give the Safety-Professional, an emotional satisfaction of contributing their mite for Construction-Safety.

Difficulties which may arise during the functioning of theConstruction-Safety-Desk , can be dealt with in due course. The Construction-Industry-related Organizations should go ahead with this action-plan, at least until a better one comes up.
