From the Library DirectorOn Your Mark. Get Ready… READ @ the Library this summer. This year’s summer reading theme is fitness/health/wellness. People of all ages can participate in one of the three summer reading programs: On Your Mark, Get Ready READ for children, Get Your Game On for teens and Exercise Your Mind for adults. Summer reading kicks off in June and finishes in August. Staff has been working hard planning programs that tie in with the summer reading theme and putting together reading suggestions for all to enjoy. Register and read or listen to great books and be entered for summer reading prizes. Attend the many programs being offered throughout the summer that will engage, entertain and expand your horizons. Or just come in, browse and see what the library has to offer both in materials and services.

On a separate but equally important note, as we are gearing for an exciting summer we are ending a beloved service to the public. Due to budget cuts, after 20 years the library will no longer be open on Sundays. Since 1996 the library has been open 25 Sundays a year from November to May. This has been a time for students to research and study and a time for working adults to access the library on the weekend. We also provided a place for people of all ages to hang out during the long winter months to use the computers or Wi‑Fi, to create and collaborate with others or to just browse and read. After careful consideration, it was determined that in light of the amount of our budget cuts, the elimination of Sundays and some decreases to online databases and library materials would have less of an overall impact on library staffing, services, programs and materials than other options available to us. It is a sad time for the library and the community. I am hopeful that in the coming years that the Sunday hours will be reinstated so we can once again be open during the days and hours that best suit everyone.
