Ferryhill woman Claire Gray has been charged with her brother’s murder, after he was found dead in his home in Ferryhill Station after a party with friends. The 21 year old appeared before Newton Aycliffe Magistrates Court this week charged with the murder of Ashley Gray, 24, who was found dead at around 10pm last Friday evening. Ashley was having a party with friends at his home on High Street, Ferryhill Station. He suffered a single stab wound to the chest and was rushed to Darlington Memorial Hospital, but despite doctors’ best efforts, his wound was too severe and he died later in hospital. A kitchen knife was recovered from the terraced house, believed to be the murder weapon. Police remained stationed outside the cordoned off property as scene of crime officers investigated the tragic incident. Floral tributes were left on High Street as police conducted door- to-door enquiries to see if neighbours could add further information to their investigation. Eleven people were arrested who were inside the house at the time of the attack. The men and women, aged 16 to 26, were held for ques- tioning at various stations across the county. After correlating their investigation over the weekend, police charged Miss Claire Gray with her brother’s murder on Sunday morning. The other ten people were released without charge. Flanked by security guards at Newton Aycliffe Mag- istrates Court, Miss Gray was remanded in custody and her case transferred to Teesside Crown Court. She spoke only to confirm her name and address. Her family were sat at the back of the room, and Miss Gray blew a kiss to them as she left the courtroom. Miss Gray is due to appear at Teesside Crown Court as The Chapter goes to press. Anyone with any further information that may help police with their investiga- tion – anything you have seen or heard that could be suspicious - is asked to call 0345 6060365 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. A new hotline is available for County Durham residents to report illegal sales of fireworks. In conjunction with the Safe Durham Partnership, Durham County Council’s trading standards team has launched the number in a bid to tackle an increase in unregistered sellers, the supply of banned fireworks and illegal sales to children. As bonfire night approaches flyers promoting the hotline will be delivered to homes in problem hotspots, asking for help to identify anyone selling fireworks from houses, pubs, mobile shops and car boot sales. Last year the council seized a large quantity of illegal bangers, that when tested on a dummy, were shown capable of blowing someone’s hand off. Joanne Waller, head of environment, health and consumer protection, said: “With the recession the offer of cheap fireworks may be tempting but people must be very careful as they might not comply with strict safety standards and can be very dangerous.” Cllr Bob Young, Cabinet member for strategic en- vironment, added: “The community can play a big part in tackling the issues associated with the supply of illegal goods and sales to youngsters. “Aside from the nuisance caused by misuse, none of us want unsafe fireworks to fall into the hands of our children and put them at risk.” All illegal fireworks seized by the council are being destroyed by professional display organisers 21st Century Fireworks of North Road, Darlington. The hotline number is 03000 260913. An answering machine service operates outside office hours. Illegal firework hotline Ashley Gray died from a single stab wound to the chest.

Dean David Howe pleaded guilty to a charge of using threatening, abusive, insulting words and behaviour towards another man in West Cornforth on 25th September when he appeared at Newton Ayciffe Magistrates’ Court recently. The 22 year-old, of Bridge Road, West Cornforth, had struck his victim twice, knocking him to the ground where he lay unconscious for a while. However, the victim would not co-operate with the

police and made no formal complaint. The incident occurred outside a Public House at around 11.30pm but the defence stated that there had been a degree of provo-cation inside the pub, when Howe had been struck by the victim’s female partner. The District Judge imposed no fine or costs, as Howe already owes the court £871 in fines but instead imposed a twelve months community order, which will include 80 hours of unpaid work.

into custody on a matter of being drunk and disorderly and had urinated on the floor of the police cell.Pegler was ordered to pay £17 in compensation for the cleaning of the police cell, £85 in costs and was handed a 12 months condi-tional discharge.

Due in courtKenneth Petitjean, of William Street, Ferryhill, was due to appear at Newton Aycliffe Magis-trates’ Court to face two charges arising out of an

incident in Ferryhill on 5th September. It is alleged that the 42 year old assaulted a female and made threats to kill her.

Dear Editor,

The saga of the leisure centre drags on. Although officially closed a new bid from the Ferryhill Community partnership led by county councillors Brian Avery and David Farry is now in the hands of the county council.

It seeks to turn the centre into a private members sports club. Prior to submission of the bid a commitment of support was needed from the town council and it was needed as a matter of urgency.Regrettably the council felt unable or unwilling to convene a meeting to discuss the matter for at least 10 days. In order to meet the deadline for the bid, the partnership had no option but to continue without their support. Consequently if the bid fails the town council should shoulder some of the blame because like our town MP Phil Wilson they have shown very little interest in saving the centre.

Hopefully by the time this letter is in print we may have good news from the county council.

Ken Tait, Ferryhill

Dear Editor,

As a child growing up in Ferryhill, in the 1950’s, I recall thinking there was no place I would rather live. I felt safe and blessed to live where doors could be left unlocked, adults could be trusted, buildings were constantly upgraded, after school clubs and community activities abounded, with cultural pursuits such as Miners First Aid Com-petitions, choirs, first class bowls, cricket and football, busy allotments, greyhound and pigeon racing, and thriving industries in the local mines, railway and clothing factory. But most of all, an overwhelming sense of peace, progress and community. It is the duty of each generation to endeavour to make the world a better place for the next, but we were severely wounded by the close down of Dean and Chapter and Mainsforth Collieries, Ferryhill Railway Station and Goods Yard and Dean Bank Clothing Factory. Together they represented a hugely significant manufactur-ing and service base that provided employment, communal enterprise, cultural stability and to-getherness. Sadly I have recently heard Ferryhill renamed ‘Very ill’ or ‘Ferryhell’. We, our young people especially, deserve better. The closure of our Leisure Centre is unfair and against the best interests of Ferryhill or County Durham, but it will serve to keep open other Sport and Leisure Centres who have councillors within the ‘Council Cabinet’ apparently more motivated to pose as local heroes to their community and willing to turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to the needs of the County as a whole and Ferryhill in particular. It is bad enough when elected Labour Councillors do the dirty work of the Tories, but I say shame on them for the social injustice they and their civil servant officers are actively, sys-tematically and mercilessly inflicting on Ferryhill, while pretending to be open minded, fair and transparent. On the other hand, I am proud to be witness and ally to Ferryhill and Chilton residents who have attended campaign meetings at the Station Club, Ferryhill School and the Town Hall, and put over 3,500 signatures on petitions, supporting local councillors and conscientious cultural industrial-ists, all of whom I consider to be comrades. Yours faithfully,Ibrahim Brian Thompson (Mr T)Ferryhill

LettersHave your say...

Dear Editor,

I am a Ferryhill resident studying for a History degree at Newcastle university. As part of my studies I have been asked to carry out an oral history interview - “Select an episode in the history of your family or locality and research it using oral history methods, and reflect on why it is important to your family/locality.”

Apparently it could also be someone elses family. I need to get this done in the next couple of weeks, but I am struggling to find anyone suitable to interview and an ‘episode’ that we could discuss. The person could, for instance, have been conscripted into the mines during the war perhaps, or took part in some event that isn’t earth shattering or international, but is important to this area. The in-terviewee does not necessarily have to be the person who took part in the event - a relative would do as long as they know the details and could answer questions in the interview.

The question is really vague and open, but as most of my family are no longer alive it’s difficult to find anyone else to interview quickly. Would you perhaps be able to print an appeal on my behalf? I realise this might not be the sort of thing you’re interested in, so if you feel unable to help I will understand.

Ferryhill poppy appealThe areas of the Flanders and Picardy saw some of the most appalling fighting of World War 1. There was complete devastation. Where once homes, farms and countryside had been, a sea of mud and carnage engulfed everything. One thing however did survive each year, the warm weather brought up poppies. Their vibrant colour in this mud and desolation gave heart and hope to the soldiers fighting in the trenches: and so the poppy became a symbol of hope and reassurance. The poppy became recognised as an important reminder of the war, and in Britain under the guidance

of Major George Howson MC, a small group of disabled s e r v i c e m e n started to make artificial poppies. So the Poppy Appeal as we know it spread from small beginnings into the powerful and successful movement that it is today. Poetry CornerWhat happened to chilblains?

What has happened to chilblains? They were such an awful pain,

For the season is almost upon us when once supreme they would reign.

What has happened to the toasting fork? Redundant, hapless and forlorn, hung now with the other brasses,

a chimney wall to adorn. What has happened to the chimney sweep?

With his poles, brushes and broom? Now he’s only used at weddings

to bring good luck to the bride and groom. What has happened to the coal merchant with

his sack of back-breaking coal? Alas like many others

he’s probably on the dole. What has happened to our pits,

miners and the like? Colliery houses, chimney pots and the old sit-up-and-beg push bike.

As for my chilblains, I would welcome there seasonal return,

If in our empty cold fireplace a nice warm coal fire

would crackle and merrily burn.

On Friday 7th October, students from Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College were invited to take part in an enterprise competition to celebrate the upcoming Global En-trepreneurship week in November. Enterprise Academies from across the North East were asked to invite a local school to represent them in the competition, which was held at St James’ Park. FBEC were chosen by MFC’s Enterprise Academy. FBEC entered two teams

of 5 students from the Year 10 Business Studies class, who also take part in the after school club, ‘Achievers International’.Students were asked to design a new app for an iphone which could be used by their football club. One of the teams designed ‘The B Factor’ which is an app that allows football fans to change the lyrics to well known songs in the charts to link them to the football team and players. The other team designed ‘Middles-Pro’ which allows football fans to live the

life of a Middlesbrough football player, a cross between the SIMS and Football Manager games.Although the winning team came from Castleview Academy, and were repre-senting SAFC, the students worked extremely hard and demonstrated a very mature attitude to the event. Well done to Sarah Britton, Amy Bolton, Georgia Burn, Ellie Foster, Kieran Latcham, Naomi Morrison, Katie Murphy, Megan Reed Robinson, Kieran Thompson and Rhys Todd.

Win for Ferryhill Celtic FC Ferryhill Celtic FC progressed to the next round of the County Cup with a hard fought 3 – 2 win away to Hartlepool Bell Vue FC on Sunday 16th October. Celtic started strongly putting Bell Vue on the defensive with some great one touch football, with Lukas Linhart and Johnny Agar looking a real threat up front. Celtic took the lead on 20 minutes, after some great work from Stephen Ward ending with Lukas Linhart firing into the bottom corner. This seemed to spur Bell Vue who deservedly equalised with a good free kick to level the score at half time.Celtic again started the better side with the Hartlepool keeper pulling off some great saves, with Dan Mitton and Neil Bell giving Celtic a sound defence base.

The 2nd Celtic goal came through a Lukas Linhart header after a good delivery from Darren McKenna. Despite more Celtic pressure, Bell Vue equalised with only two minutes remaining. With extra time looming Johnny Agar went past two players to set up man-of-the-match Lukas Linhart for his hat-trick and to win the tie for Celtic.

What a game!Ferryhill Saints pulled off the shock end result of the season in the County Cup defeating Sunderland Myers 3 – 2, who are current Sunderland Premier Sunday champions, and were one of the favourites to win the County Cup.The Saints started the game on the front foot, creating a glorious chance when David Tait danced past a couple of defenders and put Mark Burnett through on goal, but his shot went wide of the post. The next 20 minutes belonged to the Myers showing what a class act they are, putting a couple of great moves together to create a couple of shooting chances from a distance. However, Saints back 5 of Kevin Dagger, Paul Robson, Ricky Gardiner and Nicky Pattinson stood firm, along with outstanding keeper Troy Race. The Saints got the break on the half hour when a Paul Robson free kick

was floated into the box where Shane Todd skilfully controlled the ball and slotted it past the keeper. In the 2nd half the game was similar to the 1st with Myers trying to break down the Saints who worked tirelessly to close them down, with the midfield trio of Shane Todd, Mark Burnet and Pacman covering every blade of grass.Saints went 2 – 0 up when Jonathan Hair scored a wonder goal fired into the top corner from 30 yards.Shortly after on 75 mins. it was 3 – 0 when Krugga broke from his own half

to put Andrew Agar clean through, finishing with a clinical shot into the right corner of the net. With 10 minutes remaining Myers got a life line scoring from close range. Five minutes later they scored again, making it an nervous final few minutes for the Saints, who had ran themselves into the ground. They held on for an incredible victory, this was 9 wins in the last 10 games. Man-of-the-match was Ricky Gardiner. The next game is at home at Mainsforth against Usher Moor, kick off 10.30.
