Why music?

Music is an integral part of most cultures and societies. All countries tend to have patriotic songs. Most countries also have official national anthems that have either been especially written or have been adopted by the country.

For example, the British national anthem is ‘God save the Queen,’ whereas ‘Rule Britannia’ is a patriotic British song.

Music and celebration

Music plays an important role in religious and secular celebrations.

football fans often sing to celebrate a goal or to encourage their team, and music is played when the players process out of the tunnel at the start of a match

boxers often have their own ‘theme tunes’ that are played as they enter the ring.

Religious festivals have particular pieces of music associated with them, and sporting events also make use of music, for example:

Music and special events

Some music is composed specifically for a special event, whereas other music becomes associated with an event after it has been composed.
