Be able to understand how moving water can be used to produce electricity and be able to evaluate its

advantages and disadvantages.HSW: AF2: Make balanced judgments about scientific developments by

evaluating the economic, moral, social or cultural implications. Used before in: Will use again in:

Outcomes

All students should be able to: • Describe how hydro, wave and tidal

power stations produce electricity. Most students should be able to: • Plan and make a hydro electric

generator and evaluate the problems with it.

Some students should be able to: • Evaluate the advantages and

disadvantages of using water power and understand how sources can be biased.

Starter

• Your teacher will give you some questions

• Watch the video and write down the answers

• You will mark these at the end, (the answers are at the end of the video)

Practical Time

• Can you make a water turbine similar to ones that are used in hydroelectric power stations.

• You will be given the equipment you need.• It is up to you to draw a design, make it, test

it and then evaluate it. (How could you make it better?)

• Once you have done this use the Milner Text books: page 31 to explain the advantages and disadvantages of Water Power.
