As I start this month’s Flock Talk, we are in a Bed and Breakfast, southwest of Dickson, TN. We are in a nice cabin-like home with our daughter, Naomi. Our other two sons will arrive in the next few days. My mom and dad arrived earlier today in their RV, and all locked in for the night.
When I travel, sometimes I think about how people traveled long ago. Depending on the trip, I imagine what it would be like to travel on the Oregon Trail in a covered wagon, or go down the Mississippi River on a steamboat, or drive a Model T Ford. I then compare all these ways with how we travel these days.
For instance, this morning, we left at 5:15 AM and arrived at our destination at 9:20 PM. Even with – “ALL THE ROAD CONSTRUCTION ZONES!!!” - We still arrived A LOT SOONER than by covered wagon, steamboat, or Model T Ford. In our car today we traveled 998 miles in 16 hours. We stopped 3 times for gas and food.
How long do you think it would take to travel this distance by covered wagon, steamboat, or Model T Ford!? My guess is we probably wouldn’t arrive until after we turn around and head back and arrive at home! Compared to how people used to travel, we sure do travel a lot further and faster!
As a kid, I remember we did travel for many of the same reasons people do today. Many people travel for family celebrations such as weddings and anniversaries, new births and birthdays, as well as holidays and vaca-tions. Yes, there are other reasons people travel. One such reason is to move. This makes me think about the Israelites leaving Egypt. It took them 40 years to finally reach their destination!! And yet, while traveling there, they walked through both the Red Sea and the Jordan River. WOW! Now that would be cool!!
I also think about the Apostle Paul. He walked on foot and traveled by boat, thousands and thousands of miles. That’s a lot of days, weeks, months, and even years he gained in just experiences related to travel. In fur-ther thinking, I do think there is something to gain in just the travel itself. For instance, what experiences did we miss by traveling 998 miles in just 16 hours? How many more experiences would we have gone through if we traveled by foot or horse? It would have taken us a lot longer, yet, at the same time, what experiences would we have missed? Until this last trip, I never really thought about it this way. I only focused on being grateful and thankful for NOT having to travel in the way people had to years ago.
So, how much do we miss because in our life’s journey, we are passing by as fast as we can? How many miss out because we are racing off to go here and there and do this and that, as well as to work, yet we struggle to do so with others and with God? How many are caught in a Gerbil-like wheel going around and around, not really making or taking any action to get off?
Said a different way, how many of us are walking with God in our life’s journey on a daily basis? How many of us know how to do so and do it? How many “miss out” on all GOD gives in spending time with Him in His Word? How many spend time in God’s Word letting “it” BE a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path?

This is what the “Red Letter Challenge” is about. It’s about learning to let go and let God’s Word lead and teach us. It’s about getting comfortable with letting God’s Word have a say-so in our daily lives. It’s about gathering together with others and learning what it’s like to be real about one’s life-challenges and struggles and being open and honest about one’s up’s and down’s in following and failing to follow God. It’s about
learning to let Jesus’ Red Words lead and teach us to grow in the faith, hope, and love that HE gives us. So, come on! Go ahead! Take the challenge! See if GOD can’t or won’t help make a difference in your life and in your life’s travels!
We will start the “Red Letter Challenge” - the week of Sunday, October 6th and end on the week of Sunday, No-vember 10th. Get your book out in the entrance and check out a small group to join. If one of the times doesn’t work, volunteer to host and/or facilitate a new one for a time that does work. You will be instructed in how simple it is to do. Face the challenge and join in on the fun and fellowship!
A Blessed Fall to you and yours!

We are now officially in the time of fall. I mentioned in last months article that in most Lutheran congregations today only women serve on the altar guild and that in earlier times in the Church the services were done by what we today call the altar guild were done by men. There are no rea-sons that men and women of various ages can’t serve together. The work of the guild should not be considered as “women’s work.” The work of the guild in assisting the worship of the congregation is appro-priate for any of the baptized, male or fe-male.
Duties of the altar guild requires simple knowledge. We as an Altar Guild Commit-tee have gone over and simplified the de-tails on caring for the altar, one only has to read through them and then follow them. Shirley graciously places this infor-mation in your mailboxes when it is your month to serve. This is not a complicated task. Please prayerfully consider joining our altar team . We will have new sign-up sheets out soon for 2020, this will be a by the month sheet. A BIG THANK YOU to those who participated this year; we would love for you to serve again. You are neces-sary and valuable servants of this congrega-tion.

A woman was asked by a friend, “What is
it like to be a Christian?” The friend
replied, “It’s like being a pumpkin. God
picks you from the patch, brings you in,
and washes all the dirt off of you. Then
He cuts the top off and scoops out all the
yucky stuff. He removes the seeds of
doubt, hate, and greed. Then He carves
you a new smiling face and puts His light
inside of you to shine for all the

Anniversary Prayer
Lord, we thank you for this couple and for all of the years that they have had together.
As they celebrate their anniversary, our prayer is that you will continue to bless them.
Let their testimony of love and forgiveness be a help to other couples as they start on their own journeys into married life. Lord, we
pray that You will honor their commitment to each other and to You by granting them many more years of happiness together.

The Season For Soup
Creamy Sausage and Tortellini Soup
Ingredients 1 lb. Italian Sausage
1 small yellow onion, diced
1 small shallot, diced
2 large carrots, peeled and diced
4 garlic cloves, minced
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
5 cups chicken broth
14 oz. refrigerated cheese tortellini
1 tsp. kosher sea salt
1/2 tsp. ground black pepper
1/2 tsp. Italian seasoning
6 ounces chopped fresh spinach
2 cups half & half (or heavy cream)
Directions
1. In a large stockpot set over medium-high heat, cook the sausage until browned, using a slotted spoon, transfer the cooked sausage to a paper towel lined plate; set aside.
2. Add onion, shallot and carrot, saute for 5 minutes or until the vegetables are soft. Add the garlic and saute for an additional 2 minutes, or until fragrant, stirring occa-sionally to prevent it from burning.
3. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually add in the chicken broth, whisk to combine. Continue cooking until the mixture reaches a simmer, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 6 minutes.
4. Pat as much grease as possible off of the sausage, then add it along wit the tortelli-ni, salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, spin-ach, and half & half. Simmer for 5 minutes or until the tortellini is fully cooked. Serve immediately with freshly grated parmesan, if desired.
Brownie
Spiders
Ingredients 1 package (15.8 ounces) brownie mix
1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips
2 cups crispy Chow Mein noodles 18 candy eyeballs
Directions 1. Prepare and bake brownies according to package directions using an 8-in. square baking pan lined with parchment paper. Cool completely in pan on a wire rack. 2. In a microwave, melt chocolate chips; stir until smooth. Remove 1 tablespoon melted chocolate to a small bowl; reserve for attaching eyes. Add noodles to re-maining chocolate; stir gently to coat. Spread onto a waxed paper-lined baking sheet, separating noodles slightly. Freeze until set. 3. Cut nine brownies with a 2-1/4-in. round cutter for spider bodies. Attach eye-balls using reserved melted chocolate. With a bamboo skewer or toothpick, poke eight holes in top of each spider for insert-ing legs. Insert a coated noodle into each hole. Store in an airtight container.

Family Fun In October
Boo your Neighbors! Package up some of
your favorite fall treats, put them in a cute container and then share with your neighbors. It’s a secret though so just leave it on their porch with instruc-tions to Boo another family in the neighborhood.
Find a Corn Maze! A corn maze is the ultimate
fun fall activity. Check your local farms for fall festi-vals and corn mazes. They are so much fun and many farms have several…one for kids that are easy and a lot shorter and one for adults. Spending 20-30 minutes “lost” in the corn is fun and the kids think it’s a blast.
Send a box of Halloween Cookies to far away
loved ones. One thing that kids love is getting a package of goodies from their grandparents. Even if you can’t be with your family, send a little love with delicious cookies. They are perfect to surprise college kids that are away from home!
Take A Hike! Watch the leaves changing and
take a picnic lunch. Fall brings cooler temperatures so it’s the perfect time to get out with the family and enjoy nature. Pack a picnic and spend some time unplugged with your family. The kids will really ap-preciate it. Pull out your picnic basket…you know the one you got ten years ago and haven’t used. Now’s the time!
Pumpkin Patch! Enjoy going out to pick your
families special pumpkins. Take them home, carve their faces and enjoy the smiles you will have when being together for the day!
Carve a Pumpkin! And save the seeds!
It’s a cliche to say this, but so many people just let their kids color or paint a pumpkin. Come on now, y’all. Let’s get our hands dirty and get those kids involved in this fun activity. You don’t have to carve a face. You can use a Silhouette or Cricut to cut out a fun design! Then roast up those seeds for a tasty treat.
Watch It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown! Ok, this isn’t food, but it involves a
pumpkin. Besides, what fall list is complete without watching those loveable characters?
Have a Bon Fire! Dig out the fire pits,
s’more fixin’s and coffee drinks. Let the kids have a blast making s’mores while the adults sit around drinking all those yummy fall cof-fees!
Bobbing for Apples! Apples are pret-
ty synonymous with fall. It’s the perfect activity for kids and adults. It’s fun, but challenging. When was the last time you bobbed for apples?
