At a glance

US law firm Ogletree Deakins has created

a new iteration of its firmwide intranet with

vastly improved findability and usability. A

number of new features have been

introduced to support lawyers in their work.

These include a new ability for users to

define the scope of a search, a detailed

intranet navigation option and the creation

of personalised links in the main menu.

New client and matter pages present

detailed client, project and billing

information previously spread across a

number of systems. In addition, a curated

collection of research and information

resources has been improved.

Why this won

R This intranet rework is firmly focused on

improving the daily work of the lawyers and

the delivery of services to clients

R It has also helped to increase productivity by

saving time on common activities.

R There is detailed integration work in the

Client-Matter sites, allowing users to access

content from the firm’s practice management

systems and the document management

system.

R New features have been designed to be

intuitive for very busy attorneys.

R This is a KM-driven approach, with proper

thought given to organising and managing

content.

Above: The homepage of Accolade’s intranet, Pluk. Each employee can customise their homepage by selecting and arranging a variety of widgets. These include different applications, CEO's blog, a birthday calendar, a dashboard facility, weather, Twitter feed, headlines, Google Maps and RSS feeds. The header and navigation are for corporate news. The timeline combines microblog messages from the teams an employee is a member of. From the sidebar, employees can navigate to their profile, notifications, colleagues, teams, tasks and to customer information.

Left: The academic planner. This is an online schedule builder for students which replaces five paper forms. Students can choose their options for lessons. Once the student finishes the schedule, workflows send it to guidance and parents for approval. Schedules are archived in a library by student name. The planner is touch-enabled with drag and drop tiles.

When a new employee starts at the office he or she gets a widget on the right hand corner of the home page called Navigate with direct links to the three missions. Although the program is designed to be completed in 90 days, the widget is visible for the first 180 days of employment.

Above: An overview of the complete Navigate training program, showing how each mission is structured with a set of modules, an exam and an overall learning target for each mission. The different modules in each mission support the learning process for reaching the overall learning target.

The platform includes the following: 50 modules, 15 e-learnings, 29 videos, 6 open exercises, 3 classroom training sessions, 4 webinars, 12 country-specific onboarding pages, 13 automatic emails, 4 face-to-face meetings with either manager or mentor and 75 webpages.

Engaging staff through a CSR initiative

Gold award winner: Johnson & Johnson Asia-Pacific (Singapore)

At a glance

Johnson & Johnson’s Asia-Pacific region has developed a microsite to support its CSR campaign ‘Making Smiles, Changing Lives’. The site focuses on the efforts of the employees who are volunteering and raising funds for Operation Smile. This charity raises awareness and performs life-changing operations for children born with cleft lips and palates.

The site is available from desktops and mobile devices. It allows users to upload blogs, photos and videos of their efforts and records how much money has been raised.

Why this won

R This CSR campaign is engaging for employees as it emphasises the actions of the individuals and teams involved rather than events at the corporate level.

R The focus on mobile access, social sharing and use of photo and video ensures that it is easy for volunteers to post updates while they are on ‘Missions’.

R The design for both desktop and mobile version is clean and inviting, with a strong presentation of images.

R The Smile Counter is a nice addition, showing the difference employees are really making to children’s lives.

R This successfully appeals to specific countries through the ability to filter by location and rotating imagery on the homepage.
