IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE WARAlthough some western and a number of home histori-
ans do stick to the standpoint that the soviet industry had
not diminished tank production in the first post-war years136,
the latest archive research supplies the evidence that this is
not true at all137.
The country was exhausted by war and needed relax-
ation and rehabilitation. This concerned both the man-
power and the machinery. The plans for the demilitariza-
tion of the economy were ready as early as in the last war
months. The people’s commissariat for tank industry obvi-
ously had to be reformed. The civil departments initiated a
true battle for its enterprises. People’s commissariat for
heavy machine-building claimed Sverdlovsk Uralmach
works and the diesel works № 76. People’s commissariat for
ways of communication required three numbered plants. It
also considered the action of entirely ceasing the tank pro-
duction at Nizhny Tagil works № 183 and Omsk plant
№ 184 necessary for the purpose of works’ transition to the
production of cars and steam locomotives respectively. Peo-
ple’s commissariat for iron-and-steel industry desired to
take the armour-producing Ilyich plant in Mariupol. Three
more works were intended to go to the People’s commissar-
iat for machine-tool building. As a result in October 1945
the former people’s commissar for tank-building V. A. Maly-
shev and the head of the Chief armoured-tank department
Ya. N. Fedorenko had to appeal to the government with a
request to preserve at least a minimal defence capacity: “It is
quite natural that in the condition of peaceful time the
works of tank industry must be reconstructed and produce
the articles necessary for the national economy, but at the
same time we consider that in order to preserve mobiliza-
tion potential as well as the basic staff of the tankers and to
до 5 машин в день);
кадров рабочих и ИТР;
ного технического руководства танковым делом;

educate the new ones as well as for the further progress of
the tank modifications it is necessary:
a) to maintain the tank production at all the tank-build-
ing works at a small level at the very least (from one to five
machines per day);
b) that the character of the civil products made by the
tank works should correspond to the character of the tank
production and the specialization of the tank-building per-
sonnel, otherwise a fundamental reconstruction of the
works would be required and the workers as well as the
engineer and technical personnel would loose their skills;
c)to retain all the tank, diesel and armour-hull plants in
the same people’s commissariat to provide a single technical
direction over the tank production;
d) to prohibit to pull apart the basic staff of tank-build-
ers (designers, technologists, testers and others) regardless
the works they were working at before the war.
On the basis of the mentioned above and for the pur-
pose of sustaining the tank industry in the country we are
asking you:
1. To decline all the attempts to pull apart and liquidate
the tank works.
2. To order the tank works such civil products (tractors,
automobiles, excavators, oil and coal machines, motor cars,
diesel locomotives, submarines and so on) that are relative
to the tank production and won’t require a radical change
of the works’ profile.
3. To preserve the production of tanks and diesels in
small quantities at all tank and diesel works, namely Kirov’s
plant in Chelyabinsk, the works № 183 in Nizhny Tagil, plant
№ 174 in Omsk, plant № 75 in Kharkov, Kirov’s plant in
Leningrad, works № 76 in Sverdlovsk, plant № 77 in Bar-
naul, works № 50 in Sverdlovsk”138.
This request had been satisfied. All mentioned in the last
point works were retained in the newly established people’s
commissariat (Ministry from 1946) for transport machine-
building. Apart from the civil products they went on design-
ing and producing the armoured-tank machines. Mean-
while, the Uralmach works was transferred to the system of
people’s commissariat for heavy machine-building by the
order of the USSR Soviet of people’s commissars from
14 October 1945. The condition was to preserve the capac-
ity and equipment for a quick arrangement of the produc-
tion of the SU-100 self-propelled guns in the “period of
mobilization”, i. e. under a direct threat of war. The last SU-
100 was assembled at UZTM in May 1946; the production of
the IS-3 tank’s hulls was ceased as early as in January. The
drawings of the SU-100 were kept in the archive, while sev-
eral prints were transferred to Omsk plant № 174139.
Although the order of the Soviet of people’s commissars
from 14 October 1945 contained a separate point about the
preservation of the designing bureau and experimental
shop140, the designers of armoured-tank machines occurred
to be separated by the departmental wall from their main
partner – the works № 50. The self-propelled guns’ designing
bureau remained in the authority of the civil ministry, which
wasn’t very interested in the defence problems. Now the
works could be supported only by its own department of the
chief designer capable of serving just the mass production of
parts and units of the already designed armoured guns.

THE DESIGNING BUREAU OF UZTM’S SPECIFIC PRODUCTION ON THE TURN OF 1945–1946
In the last war months the designing bureau headed by
L. I. Gorlitsky and the leading engineer N. V. Kurin was devel-
oping the new perspective self-propelled guns SU-101 with
the D-10S 100 mm gun and SU-102, which differed from
the former mainly by the D-25S 122 mm gun. Their draft
projects had been approved by the sitting of the technical
council of people’s commissariat for tank industry in Sep-
tember 1944. In contrast to their fore-runners the new
machines’ engine-transmission and driving parts were
equipped with the units not only from the T-34 but also
from the new T-44 tank141.
The SU-101 and SU-102 essentially differed from the
produced in batch SU-100 even in their appearance. Due to
the rear location of the fighting compartment, the gun
almost did not exceed the hull’s limits. This substantially
increased the gun’s maneuverable potential in a town or
forest, since the gun’s traverse was not hindered by the dan-
ger to destroy the barrel by a tree or a wall. The same was
the case with passing through ditches or ravines, because
the barrel was not any longer obstacled by the locality’s
folds. It should be noticed that the latter was a very serious
and unpleasant trouble: in 1944 after the governmental
testing the IS-2 tank lost its gun while being showed to mar-
of the heavy self-propelled guns and even the IS-2 tank.
It could even resist the long-barrel 88 m gun of the KwK
43 German tank. The SU-101 and SU-102 became the
first medium-class machines armed with 12.7 mm anti-
aircraft machine gun (mounted on the commander’s
hatch)143.
The experimental samples of the SU-101 and SU-102
were named “Uralmach-1” and “Uralmach-2” in the people’s
commissariat for tank industry and built in March-April of
1945. During the summer and autumn the works’ trials were
held and the design was perfected. This was slightly delayed
since the main forces of the designing bureau were used for
the civil products after the war ended144.
At the same time the staff of the designing bureau was
reduced. On 1 January 1946 it consisted of 57 employees,
but already on 1 May the number of its specialists was just
38. The matter was not only the desire of the evacuated in
the time of war specialists to come back home, as the laws
of 1946 prohibiting an unauthorized transfer to a new job
had not been abolished by 1946. The staff of the self-pro-
pelled guns’ designing bureau was pulled apart by the
decisions of the higher power organs. For example, a
group of designers was ordered to go to Leningrad to
strengthen the central designing bureau of turret-building
engaged in the development of ships’ and coastal artillery
turret guns145.
shal K. Ye. Voroshilov, since the long barrel ladled some
earth in the course of maneuver and hence exploded when
firing142.
For the SU-101 and SU-102 the rear location of the
fighting compartment gave advantages to the operation
of the driving part. The weight of the SU-101 and SU-102
was equally distributed over the whole fundamental part
in contrast to the SU-100 with its overloaded front
sprockets. The even pressure to the driving part together
with a light compact torsion bar gave the opportunity to
essentially strengthen the armour defence. The further
firing tests revealed that it proved to be superior to that
The activity on the development of the “Uralmach-1”
and “Uralmach-2” systems was very complicated. L. I. Gor-
litsky pointed out in the account on 1946: “The creation of
a new gun with a principally new location of the basic parts
proved to be difficult and long. It took the plant 20 months
to pass from the initial stage of the activity – the designing
investigations – to the trials on the proving ground, while
some mechanisms and units had been changed for several
times”146.
In December 1945 two self-propelled guns “Uralmach”
were subjected to trials on the famous “Kubinka” proving
ground. The four-month trials performed by the professional

74
УРАЛТРАНСМАШURALTRANSMASH
armoured forces’ experts revealed both gun’s advantages
and shortcomings147. The advantages included: 1) an
improved maneuverable potential of the gun on the broken
and forest ground; 2) a good steadiness and easy operation
of the driving gun; 3) a good steadiness in stationary fire;
4) an increased anti-projectile hull’s defence; 5) an increased
service life of the wheels as a result of an even pressure on
them; 6) a comfortable entrance to the machine and arma-
ment stowage.
Apart from this the new gun was merited for a high uni-
fication with the earlier produced medium self-propelled
guns, an opportunity of the further increase of firepower via
the installation of more long-barrel guns, a simple and safe
contact of the gun for a marsh as well as a comfortable oper-
ation and care for the transmission.
The most essential shortcomings included the density of
the fighting compartment and as a result of this the low fire
capacity as well as an insufficient ventilation from powder
gas, a short service life of torsions bars, an increased temper-
ature in the engine-transmission section and a strong effect
of the blast wave on the front part of the hull’s roof. As a
result the scientific-research bureau “NIBT Proving ground”
of the Main armoured-tank department came to the conclu-
sion that the “Uralmach” self-propelled guns failed to pass
the test.
This was the end of activity on the SU-101 and SU-102.
The revealed shortcomings were liable to be liquidated but
there was no point in it. By the summer of 1946 the produc-
tion of the basic self-propelled gun T-34-85 had been
already ceased. Parallel with this it became apparent that the
T-44 was the intermediate model whereas it was the T-54
that had to become the basic medium tank.
taneously the accounts and investigations on the existing
machines were received from the scientific-technical institute
of people’s commissariat for tank industry as well as from the
Army experimental proving ground. The information was
gathered on the units, which were not previously used in the
home tank-building production. They included the caterpil-
lars with silent blocks, hydraulic-mechanical transmission;
hydraulic drives; brake mechanisms with automatic regula-
tion; hydraulic shock absorbers, electric drive controls149.
As a result L. I. Gorlitsky and his colleagues had come to a
conclusion of the necessity to design a light-armoured base
for the self-propelled artillery guns with an open installation
of the guns. It was meant to have embodied the latest techni-
cal achievements and to be capable of carrying almost all the
artillery systems the land forces were armed with, from the
85 mm anti-aircraft guns to the long-range 152 mm ones.
The tactic-technical specifications presented by the Chief
armoured-tank department allowed such a decision150.
Simultaneously in the same year of 1946 the UZTM’s
designing bureau was ordered to develop two variants of a
closed self-propelled gun with 122 mm gun and heavy
armour (up to 200 mm for the fighting compartment). The
first variant had to be based on the units of the T-54 tank,
while the second had to have the maximal utilization of new
mechanisms. The draft projects were made and submitted to
the scientific-technical committee of the Chief armoured-
tank department in August 1946. However, the works refused
to carry on any further activity as its capacities couldn’t sus-
tain the heavy fixed weight of the machines151.
All the forces were concentrated on the light machines.
By the summer of 1946 the designing bureau had configured
the future carrier of the artillery systems. The engine-
DESIGNING A SPECIFIC BASE FOR THE SELF-PROPELLED GUNS
In the pre-war years the self-propelled guns all over the
world were built on the base of the batch tanks, tankettes,
armoured personnel carriers and even tractors. During the
Second World War the unification of the self-propelled guns
and tanks became obligatory, since even the most devel-
oped countries lacked free capacities for the production of
specific self-propelled chassis apart from tanks. The only
noticeable exception was the American anti-tank machine
M-18 “Hellkette” made in a big-quantity batch. At the same
time the USA introduced the notion of “the fighting group”
meaning the basic tank and the total of the battle and engi-
neering machines created on its base148.
By 1945 Soviet Union had accumulated a substantial col-
lection of various self-propelled guns and track chassis either
captured on the battlefield or delivered by the allies. Through-
out 1946 Gorlitsky’s colleagues together with their chief
designer had the opportunity to study this variety. During that
year 20 special trips to Moscow, Nizhny Tagil, Chelyabinsk,

transmission section was located in its front right-hand part;
the control section with the driver / mechanic was located in
the front left-hand part. Initially it was implied to use the D-
6 engine of 300 horse power capacity, which is a simple
mechanical gearbox connected with the engine via an inter-
mediate reducer with a planetary multiplier. For the first
time the planetary traverse mechanism and tracks with the
“silent blocks”, i. e. with rubber-metal hinges, were intended
for the home self-propelled guns. The gun was mounted in
the hulls’ rear, and the armament was also laid there152.
In August the first draft projects were studied in the
Ministry of heavy machine-building and by the scientific-
technical committee of the Chief armoured-tank depart-
ment. As a result it was suggested to reduce the weight of the
self-propelled gun, to ensure howitzers’ vertical aiming up
to 60 degrees, to substitute the mechanical transmission by
either the planetary or the hydraulic-mechanical one. The
head institute of Ministry of heavy machine-building was
attracted to designing the latter153.
Independently the designing bureau decided to decline
the not-improved D-6 engine and to mount the tank diesel
V-54 with the restriction of capacity being only 400 horse
powers, which increased its resources to 400 motor-hours.
Since the elaboration of the planetary gearbox and hydrau-
lic-mechanical transmission required long time, the design-
ing bureau offered the Chief armoured-tank department the
third variant of the gearbox. It was the mechanical stepped
one with synchronizers. The interchangeability of all the
variants of the gearbox was implied154.
In December 1946 the UZTM’s designing bureau sub-
mitted the second variant of the draft project of the future
light SU-100P to the Ministry and the Chief armoured-tank
department. The list of documents contained the drawings
of the general views and units, calculations, a detailing mes-
sage, a wooden model of 1 / 10 of the natural size and a
photo album of the models. Parallel with this the technical-
draft project of the hydraulic-mechanical transmission
made by the TSNIIYMASH was studied155.
Below there are some abstracts of these documents
cited156.
“The open artillery self-propelled guns SU-100P, SU-122G,
SU-122P, SU-152G and SU-152P are intended to accompany
tanks, infantry and cavalry and to fulfil the following tasks:
1. Suppression and liquidation of the enemy’s fire points
preventing the movement of attacking troops by direct aiming,
aiming from the cover as well as by fire from closed positions.
2. Fighting the enemy’s tanks and self-propelled guns
from ambush and covers.
3. Destruction of the enemy’s field fortifications.
4. Anti-battery battle.
The anti-aircraft self-propelled gun ZSU-85 is mainly
intended for the protection of tank and mechanized troops
from aviation as well as the fulfillment of all the mentioned
above tasks.
All the enumerated self-propelled guns are the machines
with the same base – the new artillery self-propelled gun
SU-100P. When using the SU-100P as a base, the rear part of all
the other self-propelled guns may be modified depending on
the mounted gun. The production of the armoured carrier and
artillery tractor is also possible on the base of the SU-100P”.
The battle machine SU-100P had to have the weight of
18,5 tons, four crewmen, a maximal speed of 65 km per an
hour, a capacity of the round fire with gun elevation from plus
18 degrees to minus 4 degrees, a small total height of 2300 m,
an overall length of 6650 mm, a height of the fire line of 1900
mm, a gun ammunition of 50 rounds, a six-speed gearbox, an
individual torsion bar and a track with rubber-metal hinge.
The most important recommendations for the second
variant of the draft project were the proposal to substitute
the driving part with 10 road wheels by that with 12 wheels
with the same 8 idler wheels as well as the order to ensure
the guarantee run of the driving part of 3000 km. At the end

СУ-100 (вместо СУ-76 ) ; 4) легкий артсамоход СУ-122П;

of December 1946 the UZTM Chief designer’s section for
specific production initiated designing first technical proj-
ects, first of all the SU-100P and SU-152G, i. e. the open self-
propelled guns with 100 mm gun and 152 mm howitzer157.
In 1947 after the order of the Council of Ministers from
9 April the military ministry (at that time it was called so)
had prepared and performed a profound program of exper-
imental-designing and scientific-research activities on devel-
oping the configurations and production of experimental
models of armoured machines at UZTM. It included: “1). The
medium artillery self-propelled gun SU-122BM on the base
of the T-54 tank; 2) The light open self-propelled gun SU-
100P; 3) The semi-closed artillery self-propelled gun SU-100
(instead of SU-76); 4) The light artillery self-propelled gun
SU-122P; 5) The light howitzer artillery self-propelled gun
SU-152G; 6) The light artillery self-propelled gun SU-152P;
7) The anti-aricraft artillery self-propelled gun ZSU-85;
8) The anti-aircraft artillery self-propelled gun ZSU-57-2;
9) The armoured personnel carrier on the base of the SU-
100P; 10) The armoured tractor on the base of the SU-100P;
11) The hydraulic-mechanical transmission; 12) The track
with silent-blocks; 13) The hydraulic shock absorbers”158.
At that time the designing bureau lacked both the pro-
duction base and the adequate number of specialists. Not only
the experimental shop (the former tank-approving shop
№ 102), but the whole UZTM had no equipment vital for the
production of a lot of complex sub-components. By 1 January
1947 the designing bureau consisted of only 64 subjects
instead of 84 determined by the staff. The main sources of
bureau’s replenishment were not the graduates from higher
educational establishments or designing institutions but those
graduated from Sverdlovsk machine-building college159.
It must be also noticed that the plan of activities offered
by the military ministry was not really well-thought of. As a
result the designing bureau had to scatter its small forces
over 1947. The outcomes were not always successful. The
draft project of the closed SU-122 on the base of the T-54
tank mechanisms was submitted to the military specialists.
They found it to be outdated and the customer withdrew
the order. The same was the case with two light self-pro-
pelled guns SU-122P and ZSU-85 and the armoured tractor.
The activity on the anti-aircraft ZSU-57-2 was stopped
before it pretty much began in view of the lack of the auto-
matic 57 mm guns. The customer allowed joining the topic
of the semi-closed SU-100 with that of the SU-100P. In three
cases, however, the success was more obvious. The technical
project and working drawings of the SU-100P, SU-122G and
SU-152G were confirmed. The preparation process of the
equipment and billets for the first two machines com-
menced. Nevertheless, the works failed to start the produc-
tion of the experimental modification, since the experimen-
tal shop had not been prepared. The SU-152P’s designing
process was prevented at the stage of working drawings by
the delay with the gun’s project. The technical project of the
armoured personnel carrier on the base of the SU-100P had
been completed in December 1947. The fulfilled items of
the plan contained designs of the tracks with rubber-metal
hinge and hydraulic shock absorbers. The head institute of
Ministry of heavy machine-building suggested the technical
project of hydro-mechanical transmission but the design
proved to be too complicated. The incomprehensible nota-
ble feature of the year 1947 was the fact that the funds for
the equipment and even for the armour of the UZTM’s
experimental machines had not been stipulated160.

THE BITTER SALT OF THE TRIALSAs late as in 1948 the experimental-testing shop was
completed. The designing bureau was strengthened by the
necessary specialists. Although the USSR Council of Minis-
ters confirmed the year plan only on 22 June, the activity
was in progress. The first model of the SU-100P was pro-
duced and subjected to the military tests in June. By Novem-
ber it had already passed 3000 km. In August the driving test
of the armoured personnel carrier on the base of the
SU-100P started. The SU-152G howitzer and the SU-152P
gun were finished and sent into the experimental run in
October. Designing the anti-aircraft ZSU-57-2 was delayed
because of the lack of drawings of the doubled artillery sys-
tem. UZTM received those only in November. Finally, the
head institute of Ministry of heavy machine-building in col-
laboration with the works had accomplished the technical
project of hydraulic-mechanical transmission and started
developing its working drawings161.
As a rule, the first trials revealed a number of essential
shortcomings, since the designing bureau had not been
equipped with the stand machinery necessary for the pre-
liminary tests of the units and parts. Therefore, parallel with
the experimental runs the works was engaged into the pro-
duction of the second perfected modifications of the
SU-100P, SU-152G, Su-152P and the amoured personnel
carrier for the state trials. The machines were completed at
course of acceptance the T-54 tank in 1946, which entailed
the necessity to further redesign the tank over several years
thus stopping the production at the batch works162.
The trials of the second modifications made at UZTM
revealed that a number of them essentially exceeded the
determined weight:
The urgent measures taken by the works (among them
the change of some units, reduction of the allowance for
castings and even for the thickness of armoured sheets)
allowed achieving the battle weight of the SU-100P to be
22 tons, SU-152G – 23 tons, SU-151P – 28 tons and of the
armoured personnel carrier – 19 tons. Unfortunately, that
exhausted the creative resources of the designing bureau. All
the machines had no traverse range and were limited to the
horizontal aiming of 140 degrees163. The long-lasting and
exhausting for both sides struggle with the military officials
about the weight of the UZTM’s machines commenced.
From April 1949 the designing bureau has started
changing the driving part of two machines – the SU-152G
and the armoured personnel carrier. The additional seventh
wheel was introduced, after which the machines were
intended to conduct the run for 3000 km and 500 km
respectively. In September the task had been fulfilled. The
improved SU-100, SU-152G and armoured carrier with an
increased weight had to be subjected to the state testing in
November-December. However, on 15 October 1949 a new
the end of 1948 – the beginning of 1949. However, in view
of the substantial contradictions with the tactic-technical
requirements as well as the newly established order to accept
the new modifications of the armoured guns, the inter-
departmental commission did not allow them to the state
trials. The new order was caused by mistakes made in the
enactment of Council of Ministers was issued, according to
which only the SU-100P and the armoured personnel car-
rier were allowed to the state tests, while the activity on the
SU-152G, SU-152P and ZSU-57-2 had to be stopped. The
SU-100P was sent to the Kubinka proving ground in Novem-
ber 1949, the amoured carrier – at the end of December164.
The state trials of Ural machines lasted from the middle
of January to the beginning of April of 1950. Unfortunately,
both the SU-100P and the armoured personnel carrier failed
to pass them, but in both cases the commission accentuated
the perspectives of the battle machines. The commission’s
conclusion regarding the armoured personnel carrier was as
follows: “1. The experimental armoured personnel carrier

produced by the Uralmach works has not passed the state tri-
als by 5000 km run due to the break of the gearbox and the
engine, curving of four balancers, unsatisfactory joint of the
road wheels’ tyres and unsatisfactory fire capacity of the
large-calibre gun. The track, rubber of the rollers, torsion sus-
pension bar and side gears displayed satisfactory capacity
and provided the armoured carrier’s run to 5000 km in win-
ter conditions. 2. The commission assesses that the caterpil-
lar armoured personnel carrier on the base of the SU-100P
has high mobility, sufficient maneuverability and cross-coun-
try ability with 25 subjects of the landing party onboard.
With considerable carrying ability the armoured carrier
can be used for locating large-size army radio stations and
radar devices and as a base for mounting the doubled 57 mm
anti-aircraft guns, multi-barrel reactive guns and other kinds
of armament BT and MV SA”165.
The commission’s appreciation of the SU-100P was also
favourable166: “Regarding the armament, cross-country abil-
ity, speed and maneuverability the artillery self-propelled
gun SU-100P produced by the Uralmach works with the gun
produced by the works № 9 answers the modern require-
ments to the new type of the semi-closed artillery self-pro-
pelled guns intended for the artillery parts and subdivisions
of armoured-tank and mechanized troops of the Soviet
Army. Utilization of the artillery self-propelled guns of the
SU-100P type will allow a substantial increase in maneuver-
ability, cross-country ability and speed of the artillery guns
and armoured personnel carriers. The driving attributes of
the artillery self-propelled guns of the SU-100P type are not
inferior to the modern tanks, while their speed, maneuver-
ability and a longer service life exceed those of the tanks.
The 100 mm gun mounted on the SU-100P is character-
ized by the good fire capacity and aiming at the range up to
19300 m. It also has a sufficient horizontal fire angle up to
155 degrees.
Utilization of the artillery self-propelled guns of the
SU-100P type will allow providing a more successful inter-
action of the artillery with tanks especially in the attack
operations.
It must be noted that the base of the artillery self-pro-
pelled guns of the SU-100P type may be successfully used for
arming it with other guns of the calibre from 100 to 152 mm
as well as for mounting the doubled 57 mm anti-aircraft
guns, multi-barrel reactive guns and other armament”.
At the same time the machine had not passed the guar-
antee run of 3000 km due to the insufficient durability of
the joints of the road wheels’ tyres, curves of the balancers
of the suspension bar, low stability and some defects in the
guns and its installation. The D-50 gun was characterized by
the unsatisfactory operation of the breech. Among the mea-
sures for the further development of the SU-100P the state
commission pointed out the necessity to lower the fire

range and charging at no less than 100–120 mm even at the
cost of the horizontal fire aiming167.
The further spring-summer trials had revealed some more
shortcomings. The performed bullet and fragmental projec-
tiles’ firing tests made it clear that the armoured defence was
insufficient. The hull’s front projection was destroyed by the
14.5 mm armour-piercing projectiles and even by the 12.7 mm
bullets, whereas even the ordinary 7.62 mm rifle bullets could
damage the rear parts. The causes proved to be very simple –
due to the difficulties in welding high-hardened steel, the
armoured parts were processed for the medium hardness168.
In the autumn of 1950 some of the shortcomings had
been liquidated. In order to increase the stability in the course
of firing, the fire range of the SU-100P was decreased by
105 mm, the gun was moved ahead by 50 mm, the recoil
length was increased by 90 mm and consequently the recoil
resistance was reduced. The hydraulic shock absorbers were
also improved. Nevertheless, the test firing held in October
1950 made it clear that all these measures were insufficient169.
The hydraulic drive of the control of the planetary tra-
verse mechanism showed sufficient capacity but was still
criticized by the state commission due to the low range of
levers. The designing bureau perfected it but simultaneously
offered a simpler in design and technology mechanical drive
of the planetary traverse mechanism. This just slightly
strengthened the pressure to the levers170.
Together with the head institute of Ministry of heavy
machine-building a new variant of the hydraulic-mechan-
ical transmission was designed. This was a two-flood trans-
mission with planetary traverse mechanisms (after the
pattern of the T-54 tank) and a gearbox with two speeds
of the front move and one speed of the rear move. The
Chief armoured-tank department had studied the project
and assessed the good adaptability, long guarantee term of
the devices’ service, increased average cross-country speed
and simpler switching of gears. However, the shortcom-
ings were also apparent, such as the reduction of the effi-
ciency from 0,93 to 0,85, almost doubled waste of fuel and
gun’s weight. The difficulties of the mass production were
obvious, as well. The conclusion of the inter-departmental
commission was strict: “Considering all the said above… as
well as the fact that the production and trials of the
hydraulic transmission needs a considerable redesigning
and experimental-research activity, we have found the
installation of the hydraulic transmission to the SU-100P
guns and the armoured personnel carriers not reason-
able”. In accordance with the order of the USSR Council of
Ministers from 25 August 1950 the further experimental-
designing activity on the hydro-mechanical transmission
for the SU-100P was stopped at the Uralmach works as
well as in the head institute of Ministry of heavy machine-
building171.

“A MIGHTY MAN ALWAYS FINDS A WEAK ONE TO BLAME…”
By the end of 1950 the activity on the new base for the
self-propelled and other guns of the light class had already
been continued for four years. Some considerable means had
been spent but none of the machines had been accepted for
the Army service. There were a lot of objective causes as well
as the analogous or even more unpleasant examples. The
T-54 tank was accepted a year and a half after the beginning
of its designing in the spring of 1946. Nevertheless, it had to
be further redesigned for several years afterwards. However,
the officials of heavy machine-building sector started search-
ing for the guilty ones in the designing bureau. In December
1950 minister N. S. Kazakov received a report message from
the military-mobilization department of the following con-
tent: “Designing the mentioned battle machines from 1947
the chief designer comrade Gorlitsky has made a number of
severe mistakes… The fact that the machines’ design has not
been perfected up to this day and the endless non-systemat-
ical experiments and changes do continue obviously testifies
to the incompetence and incapability of the chief designer of
the Uralmach works comrade Gorlitsky to provide a quality
development of the mentioned machines and their accep-
tance for the Army service. For the purpose of fulfillment the
government’s task I find it necessary to replace comrade
Gorlitsky by a more experienced designer leaving comrade
Gorlitsky at a common job at the same works”172.
As a result at the end of 1950 L. I. Gorlitsky was with-
drawn from the activity, in 1953 he left Sverdlovsk and
returned to Kirov’s plant173.
The “activity” of Moscow officials may be simply
explained by the so-called “struggle with cosmopolites”, in
the bounds of which Lev Israelevich Gorlitsky looked as a
brilliant target. However, there was a far deeper and essen-
tial layer of causes. The correspondence between the minis-
try’s authorities and the higher institutions witnesses that
the Ministry of heavy machine-building needed the activity
of Gorlitsky’s designing bureau but not its successes.
This paradox may be illustrated by several examples. In
1950 the military ministry offered to establish the produc-
tion of the T-54 tanks at the Uralmach works and to provide
the mobilizing capacities for 200 tanks per month. In Octo-
ber of the same year the assistant minister of heavy machine-
building V. Zhigalin sent the warning declaration to the
Council of Ministers: “The proposal of the military minister,
comrade Vasilevsky, will led to the stoppage of the produc-
tion of a number of nomenclatures of the unique equip-
ment for oil and mining industries at the Uralmach works
from January 1951 and it will also disorganize the produc-
tion of the metallurgical and other machinery and entirely

discontinue the project and experimental activity on the
artillery self-propelled gun SU-100P and the armoured per-
sonnel carrier… The Ministry of heavy machine-building
finds it more sensible to sustain the existing at the Uralmach
works mobilizing potential for the artillery self-propelled
gun SU-100 up to the moment of government’s acceptance
of the artillery self-propelled gun SU-100P for the Army ser-
vice”174.
However, only a month later a new minister N. S. Kaza-
kov sent a declaration to N. A. Bulganin with a request to
els and study of the production perspectives of the armoured
guns’ base. Both in the ministry of heavy machine-building
and at the works I have not had any opportunity to find out
whether the machines are intended to be produced at the
Uralmach works after their acceptance for the Army service
or not. So, it even looks like the Uralmach works is not orien-
tated towards the mass production of the armoured tank
machines”. Further he stated: “In the department [of the chief
designer] there are 92 specialists, 59 of them in designing
groups and 33 – in subsidiary groups. There are merely 10
transfer the production of the experimental series of 50
items of the SU-100P type together with the following mass
production to the plants integrating to the Ministry of trans-
port machine-building – Omsk plant № 174 or Nizhny Tagil
works № 183, since “the Uralmach works has no free sites
and equipment for the organization of the artillery self-pro-
pelled guns’ production”175.
In other words the activity on the SU-100P was just a
way to isolate UZTM from the defence orders. The minis-
tries’ policy shouldn’t be an object of criticism, as it had
some grounds regarding the significance of the Uralmach
works’ peace products for the national economy. However,
L. I. Gorlitsky and his colleagues had to pay for this. The
designing bureau was working without an authorized chief
designer for more than half a year. Only in August the can-
didature of L. Ye. Sychev was found. He was a truly experi-
enced man. He had taken part in designing the T-28, T-29,
SMK, KV, and IS-2 tanks. In 1944 he headed the designing
bureau of the reconstructed Kirov’s plant in Leningrad. In
1947 he became the assistant chief designer of the experi-
mental plant № 100 (from 1949 – the head tank institute of
All-Union scientific-research institute-100)176.
Having studied the situation, L. Ye. Sychev sent a report
message to the ministry on 16 November 1951177: “The sev-
eral-year activity on the experimental samples without any
orientation towards their mass production at the Uralmach
works had negative effects on the development of the mod-
senior engineers directly involved into the designing of sub-
components. The number of engineers-designers is 22. Up to
1946 (stoppage of the mass tank production at the Uralmach
works) only 13 men were engaged into the tank production;
amongst them merely 5 were proper designers. In case of an
urgent replacement the heads of designing groups have no
equal changes. The rest of the staff was employed in the
period from 1947 to 1951 and they would acquire experi-
ence just in the process of producing the experimental mod-
ifications… Senior engineers of the objects coordinating the
activity on the objects, the combining group studying the
perspectives, as well as the group of sub-components and
tools are not stipulated by the staff schedule either.
The wages are reduced and do not stimulate the devel-
opment. The staff’s schedule does not provide fulfillment of
the tasks set before the department and needs to be
reviewed. The department activities’ have not been financed
for a long time and are performed at the cost of the works’
another purposes limiting the range and pace of the objects’
growth. Despite the lack of the engineering staff, the eve-
ning and contract operations are not allowed in the design-
ing department of the specific production”.
Either due to the excessive far-sightedness or to some
other cause L. Ye. Sychev had not worked at UZTM for a long
time. In April 1953 another representative of Kirov’s tank
plant’s designing bureau, G. S. Yefimov, became the chief
designer of the specific production178. Life continued.

продолжение программы конца 1945 г.;
– тендеров паровоза СО – с марта 1946 г.;
же машины);
октября;

THE AGGREGATE WORKS № 50While Gorlitsky’s designing bureau was solving numer-
ous difficult tasks of creation the self-propelled guns, no less
active life went on at the works № 50. The enterprise remained
in the bounds of the same people’s commissariat as in the
years of war and changed just its name from the “tank indus-
try” to the “transport machine-building”. Therefore there
were no essential changes in the plans for post-war time. In
June 1945 the head I. I. Lisin reported to the works’ party con-
ference that the nearest task of the collective was the adop-
tion of the mechanisms and units for oil-boring devices of the
new generation capable of reaching oil at 2.5 km depth. The
production of sub-components for the tank-building enter-
prises started to be reduced in the third quarter of 1945. In
the first quarter of 1946 it was finally ceased179.
It must be noticed that the works had accumulated pre-
cious experience over the war years, though its physical state
was rather poor. Not only the machine-tools but even the build-
ings were worn out. The majority of the wooden constructions
from the war time (more than 20 thousand square meters) had
been entirely worn out and broke. It was impossible to work in
them. Nobody was to blame for this, since they had not been
intended to have a long life. Nobody could think of the antisep-
tic processing of the wooden constructions and their isolation
from earth in the winter of 1941–1942. All this was supple-
mented with severe conditions of exploitation, absence of ven-
tilation systems and presence of etching and other caustic pro-
ductions, which were prohibited to be located in the wooden
constructions. The hastily mounted power networks had also
fallen into disrepair while the repair was hindered by their com-
plexity, since during the reconstructions and re-planning of
1941–1942 one tube- and mazut-lines, as well as cables were
put one onto each other and finally it was next to impossible to
find where the beginning and the end were180.
However, the first and foremost cause was the fact that
people themselves were tired and wanted to go home. As
early as in 1944 the evacuated workers and engineers were
seeking for returning home by all the truth and lie with such
an enthusiasm that the works encountered the danger to
remain without skilled specialists. The law directly and
strictly prohibited the unauthorized transfer to a new place
of job, but at the same time Moscow enterprises also needed
personnel and did everything possible to promote the return
of workers supporting them in “glavks” and ministries. Thus,
during the second half of the 1940s some of the best special-
ists of war time had left the works, amongst them
V. V. Tkachenko, Ye. S. Matveyev, V. I. Podrezov, V. V. Matvey-
enko. It was impossible to attempt to keep them with a
financial stimulus due to the lack of it. A particularly unpleas-
ant thing was the absence of an adequate dwelling fund181.
These were the conditions in which the post-war con-
version of the works № 50 took place. Its final directions
were determined by the order of the Ministry of transport
machine-building from 21 December 1945. The enterprise
had to adapt mass production of the following articles:
– the units for large-size oil-boring devices as the con-
tinuation of the program of the end of 1945;
– tenders for the SO locomotive from March 1946;
– steam-distributing mechanisms of the P-32 locomo-
tive from April (later on supplemented with the armature
for the same vehicle);
– coal-loading vehicles of “Joy” type from October;
– ore-loading vehicles of “Aimko-21” type from
November182.

By the end of the five-year plan in 1950 it was planned
to achieve the output of these articles of 600 tenders, 2300
sets of the steam-distributing devices and of locomotives’
armature each, 900 coal-loading machines, 600 ore-loading
machines and 250 sets of the oil-boring units. Three million
roubles for commodity goods finished off the program.
Meanwhile, the new products often exceeded the tank pro-
duction in the aspect of labour consumption183.
The defence order was confined to the tanks’ sub-com-
ponents for the Army repair plants and workshops, since
the battle machines also needed rehabilitation after the war.
In 1950 the works had to produce tanks’ spare parts for 24
million roubles184.
The production’s reconstruction promised to be difficult
due to the indispensable reconstruction of the production
buildings and transfer of the shops. Actually, even the first
post-war plan of the works’ reconstruction developed on the
turn of 1945–1946 implied the liquidation of the second
works’ site, the former Voyevodin works, and its conversion
into the city square. The first department was planned to get
additional space by means of the adjacent streets. The pro-
cess was delayed only by the lack of projects and means for
the correspondent production and dwelling construction185.
The experience of a fast transition and setting by stages
was accumulated during the war but actively used afterwards,
too. The distribution of civil products between the shops was
performed as follows: the production of tenders was arranged
in the former hulls’ shop № 145; the steam-distributing units
were assembled in the shop № 195; the production of the coal-
loading machine was conducted in the shop № 220 and that of
the ore-loading machine – in the shop № 280; the sub-compo-
nents for the oil-boring device were cooperated among all the
shops with shops № 225 and 245 closing the cycle186.
The new tasks were not confined to just a simple transfer
of equipment: the tender shop required laying half a kilometer
of railways and an equal-length bridge along the Melkovka
river. The founders needed a new cutting section, drying and
burning furnaces as well as a model section for the successful
adoption of the kinds of iron and non-ferrous metals castings,
which have never been previously produced. The construc-
tion-assembly activities were restricted by the lack of man-
power at the works and the impossibility to attract the assem-
bly workers from aside. The head I. I. Lisin ran a risk and
transferred the production workers to the construction site,
since by the spring of 1946 the year program for the tanks’
spare parts and oil-boring devices had been considerably over-
fulfilled and allowed shifting its continuing for a later
period187.
Since 1 January 1946 all the existing staff of designers and
technologists was serving the peaceful tasks. A number of spe-
cialists were invited from aside. The necessary documentation
for the production of oil-boring devices had been prepared as
early as in 1945. In January of 1946 a set of drawings for the
mass production of the steam-distributing units was designed,
in February the same for tenders and locomotive armature
was ready, in April – for the coal-loading S-153 machine, in
May – for the ore-loading PML-5 machine. Parallel with this
the department of the chief designer performed the activity
on assembling the experimental coal- and ore-loading
machines as well as modernizing the tender. At the same time
technologists and metallurgists were making the drawings for
the billets, equipment and the technological processes, as well
as compiling the detailed norms for the necessary materials
and registers of the purchased parts and the shops’ layout.

(725 кв. м); № 125 – колесно-радиаторный (2415 кв. м);
работ (3904 кв. м) и прессовый участок – (696 кв м);

The particularly serious problems were associated with
the production of the necessary cutting and measuring tools.
Low capacities of the tool-making shop necessitated an urgent
purchase of the vital articles and a transfer of the shop’s repair
base to the production of the mentioned tools188.
One way or another, the first samples of the oil-boring
units were made in 1945, and from January 1946 their mass
production commenced. Five tenders had been produced in
March 1946, and the steam-distributing units – in June189.
The year of 1947 was very difficult. On the whole the year
plan failed to be fulfilled due to a sudden rise in the military
output. The first words of “the cold war” have been already
heard all over the world and the basic tank-building enter-
prises were adapting the vehicles of the new generation. The
works № 50 had to fulfil the order for the spare parts of the
battle machines for the sum of 22.1 million roubles. That was
almost the same output as was planned for 1950. The recur-
rent “cleaning” of the staff related with the notorious “Jew-
ish” case reduced the anyway not-numerous collective of spe-
cialists. The story was traditionally finished by the staff
replacements. I. I. Lisin was replaced by K. D. Petukhov at the
post of the head. The latter was the former party organizer of
the Central Committee at the works № 183; he was a severe
and uncompromising man190.
In accordance with the enactment of the USSR Council of
Ministers from 28 July 1948 the ministry of transport machine-
building was prescribed to orientate the works № 50 towards
the withdrawn from the production of the sub-components
to the tanks and self-propelled guns and their supply to the
Army tank-repair workshops. During the year the works had
supplied the products for almost 30 million roubles – almost
one and a half time as much as in 1948191.
In 1949 K. D. Petukhov was transferred to Moscow.
M. P. Atamanov was appointed as the head, being a man
who grew up at the works and was well-known to the col-
lective there192.
According to the data from the beginning of 1949 the
works № 50 was comprised of the following shops: the smith
shop № 110 (1300 square m); the foundry shop № 100
(1735 square m); the thermal shop № 260 (1525 square m);
the wire-drawing shop № 210 (725 square m); the wheel-
radiator shop № 125 (2415 square m); the tender shop № 145
with the section for the PML-5 machines (7747 square m);
the coal-loading shop № 220 (3205 square m); the mechani-
cal shop № 225 (4248 square m); the automotive shop № 240
(1606 square m); the tinsmith section (3904 square m) and
the press section № 245 (696 square m); the mechanical shop
№ 380 (1542 square m).
Apart from this there was the repair-mechanical work-
shop comprised of the following shops: the mechanical
shops № 150 and 285, the electric-repair shop № 156, the
repair-construction shop № 160, the shop of precise mechan-
ics and tool repair, the workshop serving the vehicles, and
the workshop of adjusting and testing the equipment193.
The list of the shops did not actually contain any mentions
of the military machinery. The defence specialization may be
traced only in the distribution of the production equipment. The
majority of the machine-tools (238 items) was used for process-
ing the parts of the SU-100. The next product, the coal-loading
machine, was processed by only 196 machine-tools. The next
items in this “list” were the units of the oil-rig machine and a
newly adopted excavator – 145 machine-tools per each. 49
items were used in the production of the ore-loading machines,
41 items were used for the production of tractors’ spare parts
and 36 – for the production of the locomotive tenders194.
Over 1949 the list of military products was extended. The
works № 50 started the production of the spare parts for the T-
34 and IS tanks. The new head M. P. Atamanov reported to the
ministry: “On principle the attention of the whole works’ col-
lective was focused on the production of the tanks’ spare parts
as the basic production objective (previously the main works’
objective was the adoption of the new items of peaceful prod-
ucts, such as the S-153 coal-loading machines, PML-5 ore-
loading machines, tenders, steam-distributing units, locomo-
tive armature, units for oil-boring devices and so on)”195.

This was quite a difficult process. It necessitated the
reconstruction of the shop № 225’s building (the wooden
walls built in the war years were being replaced by the bree-
zeblock ones without stopping the production process). The
shop № 245’s building was operating for the last days with its
large nomenclature of the oil and fuel tanks, air-cleaners, dif-
ferent tubes and filters. In 1949 the works had received none
of the planned 11 new machine-tools either. In the best case
2 milling machines were promised for 1950. The works was
compelled to develop and implement a program of mea-
sures on the production of military products by its own
forces, since the year plan was already 35 million roubles.
First and foremost the best workers and heads were trans-
ferred to the sections producing the tanks’ spare parts and
the equipment was repaired and delivered firstly to them196.
The rehabilitated shop № 225 was supplemented with
the section of preliminary conservation of the parts, the
storehouse of finished products and the instrumental-dis-
tributing storehouse. The registration of the quality and
quantity state of tools and control over its exploitation was
adjusted. The reconstruction of the assembly section allowed
strict watching over the specially corrected technological
processes. Almost all the turning operations, even those per-
formed by the “Bullard” semi-automates, had been trans-
ferred to the accelerated cutting regimes197.
The line assembly of the wheels and pulverizing method
of wheels painting were introduced in the shop № 125.
Two-section drying chamber was built, which maid the dry-
ing cycle in winter conditions six times shorter. The new
regimes of processing the most mass article – the tyres –
were introduced. The intermediate transportation and
mounting parts to the machine-tools were mechanized; the
joint welding was arranged198.
In order to adopt the production of the earlier not-pro-
duced parts and units (for instance side gear in the shop
№ 220, ventilators in the shop № 145), special sections were
arranged. On the whole, from the moment when the enact-
ment of the Council of Ministers was issued on 28 July 1948
to the end of 1949 (i. e. within a year and a half) 590 devices
and 806 items of measuring instruments had been pro-
duced, while 822 items had been repaired at the works199.
However, this has not yet sufficed the fulfillment of the
plan for the tanks’ spare parts, which was already worth 35
million roubles (while the real fulfillment over ten months
was only worth 28,2 million roubles). In 1950 the plan was
already worth 54 million roubles. The implementation of
such a program necessitated the completion of the recon-
struction of the shop № 225, movement of four shops
because of the destruction of the shop № 245’s building,
transfer of the central measuring laboratory to the first site,
but first and foremost it was necessary to receive the addi-
tional equipment, mainly the tooth-cutting one. The existing
extremely worn-out machine-tools made on the average up
to 5 % of spoilage despite polishing the tooth’s profile200.
Finally, the last but not the least in significance point: the
head asked to grant means and a contractor for the construc-
tion of the 113-flat residential building. It was grounded as
follows: “Despite the lack of workers of the leading occupa-
tions (tooth-cutters, turners, polishers and others) as well as
of engineer-technical specialists (such as designers, technolo-
gists) the works has no opportunity to employ them due to
the lack of dwelling spaces. This circumstance prevents us
from growing the staff, educating it in the spirit of love to
their native works, since even giving all their forces to the
works the majority of them have failed to acquire adequate
dwelling conditions for many years. Due to this fact a consid-
erable number of highly skilled workers and engineers and
technical specialists keep seeking for leaving the works for
the cause of extremely unsatisfactory dwelling conditions”201.
At the beginning of the 1950s the works № 50 started the
production of the basic and spare parts for the latest for the
period T-54 tank apart from the already adapted set of tanks’
parts and units. However, the status of the aggregate enterprise
restricted the growth, since it occupied the last position in the
list of acquiring means and material resources. The situation
changed only in the middle of the 1950s. In accordance with
the enactment of the USSR Council of Ministers from 19 Janu-
ary 1955 the works № 50 was again transferred to the category
of a tank-building enterprises and was obliged to create the
capacities for the production of the SU-122 attack guns
designed by the works № 174’ designing bureau on the base of
the T-54 tank. The first 50 self-propelled guns had to be pro-
duced by 1956. By 1959 it was planned to reach the year yield
of 900 items with the delivery of armoured hulls from Chely-
abinsk plant № 200. The branch designing institute started the
re-projecting of the works № 50. At last the works got the nec-
essary means and equipment. The ministry of transport
machine-building had already asked Sverdlovsk city executive
committee to allocate a site of land for the tank and artillery
proving grounds for testing the new self-propelled guns202.

THERE WON’T BE FORTUNE WITHOUT MISFORTUNE
Meanwhile, the designing bureau of the specific produc-
tion of the Uralmach works already without L. I. Gorlitsky
had achieved the first true successes in 1951. The improved
SU-100P and the armoured personnel carrier were subjected
to the control state testing and had passed it successfully. The
military experts assessed the essential simplification of the
transmission without the reduction of its durability, strength-
ening of the side drives, improvement of the tracks’ design as
well as of the seats of the mechanic / driver, the commander,
the machine-gunner and the loader. The firing tests had
revealed quite an appropriate stability of the machine. The
engine’s heating regime did not restrict the continuous
movement with maximal speed with the air temperature of
up to plus 25 degrees. The new air-cleaner derived from the
T-54 tank was operating without any defects. The repeated
firing tests of the armoured hulls displayed their correspon-
dence to the tactical-technical requirements. On the whole,
out of 3829 names of the SU-100P’s parts 1048 had been
declined, 1455 parts had been newly introduced and 947 had
been changed. Out of 3010 names of the armoured carrier’s
parts 1067 had been declined, 1420 had been introduced
and 803 had been changed. UZTM was ordered to produce
the batch series of three machines of each kind till the end of
the year; this time it was for the Army tests203.
However, in fact the first three self-propelled SU-100P
guns were supplied to the Army only in October-November
of 1952, while the armoured personnel carrier – only in
August-October of 1953. The main cause was the customer’s
lack of money, caused by economizing means at the cost of
light armoured guns. In 1954 the tests went on, first and fore-
most due to the introduction of an improved suspension bar.
And finally by the order of the USSR Council of Ministers
from 26 February 1955 the self-propelled SU-100P gun was
accepted for the Soviet Army service. However, the final deci-
sion on the armoured personnel carrier had not been made
despite the recommendations of the state commission204.
The problem of selection the enterprise for the batch
production of the SU-110P became acute, since UZTM per-
sistently refused to fulfil this role with a slightly veiled sup-
port of the ministry of heavy machine-building. In 1956 sev-
eral variants were studied, being Sverdlovsk Uralkhimmach
and Uralhydromach works, as well as Lipetsk tractor plant.
Meanwhile, the Uralmach works’ experimental shop had
assembled and sent the first 25 batches of the self-propelled
guns to Kantemirovskaya division205.
Thus, at the first sight the situation seemed to start improv-
ing but on 15 June 1956 the outstanding Soviet military leader
I. S. Konev sent a message to the assistant chairman of the USSR
Council of Ministers V. A. Malyshev with the following pro-
posal: “The further activity on the creation of the self-propelled
guns armed with barrel artillery systems should be stopped. It is
necessary to develop the self-propelled devices armed.”206.
The so-called “rocket-mania” was initiated in the USSR.
It was the excessive enthusiasm about rockets and the
attempts to introduce them everywhere to the detriment of
other battle devices. The planned to be produced at the
works № 50 SU-122 and the Uralmach SU-100P as well as
the latest self-propelled gun on the base of the T-10 tank
became the victims of this new tendency207.
However, it was this very difficult for the UZTM design-
ers moment when the recent L. Ye. Sychev’s foretelling had
come true. He came to a conclusion that seemed seditious at
a time. The thought was that the SU-100P and the based on
it armoured carrier had no perspectives under the shaped
conditions in view of their expensiveness. He accentuated
that the chassis of the Uralmach pattern is still more durable
and maneuverable. However these attributes have made this
chassis quite attractive for designing the self-propelled artil-
lery guns: “The SU-152P machine seems more perspective,
because mounting the 152 mm gun justifies the utilization
of an expensive chassis more. The SU-152P could have the
guns of smaller calibers, which is impossible for the SU-
100P; apart from this the bases of the SU-152P and the
armoured personnel carrier have no differences. A lighter
and cheaper armoured personnel carrier may be designed
for transportation of 25 soldiers without a requirement for
a specific base. Therefore, the Uralmach armoured person-
nel carrier should be further developed for the specific use
in order to have a rational utilization of the chassis”208.
In the second half of the 1950s the Army showed a great
interest in the specific machines of this kind. The next chapter
will treat this problem in more detailes. In this case there were
not any problems with the works-producer. The USSR Council
of Ministers by the order from 17 May 1958 obliged Sverd-
lovsk Soviet of national economy to arrange the capacities for
the production of 500 self-propelled guns SU-100P at the
works № 50 by 1 January 1962. It was intended to arm them
with reactive projectiles and specific technical devices209.
There were several years left before the next step in the
creation of the new center of the home production of the
self-propelled guns was taken – i. e. before the formal inte-
gration of the designing bureau of the specific production
and the production base in the form of the works № 50.
However, this event had been already predetermined.
