Indian-Origin Professor Awarded‘Outstanding Investigator Award’

Indian-Origin US Student to get 'Young Scholar' Award

WASHINGTON (TIP): Indian-origin Professor ArulChinnaiyan has been recognized by the US National CancerInstitute and given the "Outstanding Investigator Award".

Prof. Chinnaiyan is from the University of Michigan. He hasbeen awarded $6.5 million in funding over seven years, toidentify cancer biomarkers to improve diagnosis and developnew targeted therapies.

"The field of precision oncology continues to evolve with theoverarching goal of providing cancer patients with enhanceddiagnostic and prognostic capabilities and better treatments,"Mr Chinnaiyan, said in a statement.

"This grant will help us identify new biomarkers andunderstand their biological roles in cancer progression," headded. A pioneer in precision oncology, Mr Chinnaiyan in 2010,launched the Michigan Oncology Sequencing (Mi-ONCOSEQ)program. Mi-ONCOSEQ is a research protocol for sequencingthe DNA and RNA of metastatic cancers and normal tissue toidentify alterations that could help drive treatment.

The program includes a precision medicine tumor board inwhich experts discuss each case.

Mr Chinnaiyan's lab has also analyzed the global landscape ofa portion of the genome that has not been previously well-explored -- long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs). Earlier, consideredas the dark matter, new evidence suggests that lncRNAs mayplay a role in cancer and that understanding them better couldlead to new potential targets for improving cancer diagnosis,

prognosis or treatment. Mr Chinnaiyan's lab has also identifiedand explored several lncRNAs that could be promising targetsfor future therapy. "We want to further characterize the darkmatter of the genome. Some of these lncRNAs will certainly bevery useful as cancer biomarkers and we think a subset areimportant in biological processes," Mr Chinnaiyan noted.

"We hope to make it commonplace for patients to have amolecular blueprint of their tumor to guide treatment choices."

WASHINGTON (TIP): India-originscholar in the US, RajalakshmiNandakumar, has been chosen for aprestigious award for her work to helpdetect potentially life-threatening healthissues using smartphones.

Ms. Nandakumar, studying at theUniversity of Washington, has created atechnology that turns an ordinarysmartphone into an active sonar systemcapable of detecting physiologicalactivities, such as movement andrespiration, without requiring physicalcontact with the device.

She has been selected for the 2018Marconi Society Paul Baran YoungScholar award.

She took inspiration from bats, whichuse sonar technique to navigate in thedark by sending out acoustic signals andusing the reflections to identify objects.

Her system works by transmittinginaudible sound signals from the phone'sspeaker and tracking their reflections offthe human body. The reflections are thenanalyzed using a combination ofalgorithms and signal processingtechniques, a media release said.

Ms. Nandakumar received herbachelor's degree in Computer Scienceand Engineering from Chennai.

She worked for Microsoft ResearchIndia before beginning her graduate workat the University of Washington in 2013.

Her Madurai-based parents founded acompany for distribution of diagnosticmedicines to hospital laboratories in

Tamil Nadu.Young scholars are selected by an

international panel comprising engineersfrom leading universities and companiesand receive a USD 5,000 prize plusexpenses to attend the annual awardsevent.

Three other young scholars were alsoselected this year. Being named 'YoungScholar' brings valuable mentorship andguidance by Marconi Prize winners whoinclude some of the world's leadingscientists and researchers.

"I always wanted to find a way to detectphysiological signals, like breathing andheart rate, because they are the mostcommonly used signals for healthcareapplications," said Ms. Nandakumar.

Her system is disrupting the sleepindustry by creating a non-intrusive, low-cost application ApneaApp for detectingsleep apnea, a breathing disorderaffecting millions of people worldwidethat often goes undiagnosed, a mediarelease said.

"Rajalakshmi has a knack for selectingproblems with high social impact," saysDr Shyam Gollakota, an associateprofessor at the Allen School.

"Our Young Scholar award attracts theworld's brightest young communicationsresearchers," said Dr Vinton Cerf,Chairman of the Marconi Society and'Father of the Internet'.

Indian-Origin Lawyer Jailed inUK for Fraud

LONDON (TIP): Indian-origin Harvinder KaurThethi, described as a "bogus immigration lawyer" hasbeen jailed for five years' after she was found guilty of sixcounts of fraud by false representation. Ms. Thethi, fromthe West Midlands region of England, had been convictedby Southwark Crown Court in London in July for falselyclaiming to be a barrister, solicitor and a UK Home Officeofficial with the ability to progress immigrationapplications. Despite being unqualified in any of thesefields, she went on to obtain GBP 68,000 from vulnerablepeople in payment for immigration related services, whichwere promised but not delivered, the court was told. At ahearing, Judge Nicholas Loraine-Smith sentenced the 46-year-old to five years behind bars for each of the sixcounts, to run concurrently.

"You decided to embark on a fantasy life, when youclaimed to be a successful lawyer earning a large income. You were nothing of the sort," the judge said during thesentencing hearing. "The large amounts of money youobtained came entirely from money you had stolen frompeople you had befriended and cheated," he noted.

The judge observed that people whose immigrationstatus is precarious are "very, very vulnerable", whichwould make them susceptible to somebody they thoughtwas a family friend and could be convinced to part withlarge sums of money they could ill afford. Harvinder KaurThethi was found to have ingratiated herself to hervictims and was, in many cases, treated as a daughter orsister. Her prosecution was the result of an investigationled by the UK's Office of the Immigration ServiceCommissioner (OISC), in partnership with ImmigrationEnforcement and the Metropolitan Police Service.

"You preyed on their vulnerability again and again... theinvestigation was thorough, fair, and - it is clear from theVictim Personal Statements - kind. I commend bothofficers in this case," the judge concluded. The offencestook place between June 1, 2013, and September 8, 2014 inHounslow, west London. Harvinder Kaur Thethi had beenremanded in custody pending a sentencing hearing in July.Ian Leigh, Deputy Immigration Services Commissioner, said his team was delighted with the outcome of the case, which they hope would send a "clear deterrent message" toanyone considering acting similarly.

proponents of "Hindutva," or politicized Hinduism-seize the high ground. In his view, it isprecisely because Hindus form the majority that India has survived as a plural, seculardemocracy. A book that will be read and debated now and, in the future, Why I Am a Hindu, written in Tharoor's captivating prose, is a revelatory and original contribution to ourunderstanding of the role of religion in society and politics.

PRAISE FOR WHY I AM A HINDU (available for pre-sale at the event):"Shashi Tharoor is the most charming and persuasive writer in India. His new book is a

brave and characteristically articulate attempt to save a great and wonderfully elusivereligion from the certainties of the fundamentalists and the politicization of the bigots."-William Dalrymple

"[O]ne of India's most articulate liberals and a leading voice of those who reject theaggressively fundamentalist strains of Hindu nationalism." -Victor Mallett, Financial Times

"A profound book on one of the world's oldest and greatest religions."-Hindustan TimesIn the eighteenth century, India's share of the world economy was as large as Europe's. By

1947, after two centuries of British rule, it had decreased six-fold. Beyond conquest anddeception, the Empire blew rebels from cannon, massacred unarmed protesters, entrenchedinstitutionalized racism, and caused millions to die from starvation. British imperialismjustified itself as enlightened despotism for the benefit of the governed, but Shashi Tharoortakes on and demolishes this position, demonstrating how every supposed imperial "gift"-from the railways to the rule of law-was designed in Britain's interests alone. He goes on toshow how Britain's Industrial Revolution was founded on India's deindustrialization, andthe destruction of its textile industry. In this bold and incisive reassessment of colonialism,Tharoor exposes to devastating effect the inglorious reality of Britain's stained Indianlegacy.

"Rare indeed is it to come across history that is so readable and so persuasive."-AmitavGhosh. "Tharoor's impassioned polemic slices straight to the heart of the darkness thatdrives all empires. Forceful, persuasive and blunt, he demolishes Raj nostalgia, laying barethe grim, and high, cost of the British Empire for its former subjects. An essential read."-Nilanjana Roy, Financial Times

"His writing is a delight and he seldom misses his target … Tharoor should be applaudedfor tackling an impossibly contentious subject … he deserves to be read. Indians are not theonly ones who need reminding that empire has a lot to answer for."-Literary Review

Tickets are $50 and are available at www.diactexas.org. Both Tharoor & Roy will beavailable for one-on-one media interviews, upon request, from 5 to 6 p.m. Media RSVP [email protected] or 512.773.6679.

Paul Manafort and special counsel closeto deal for guilty plea, reports CNN

WASHINGTON (TIP): Paul Manafort, theformer Trump campaign chairman embattledby criminal indictments, may no longer fightthe charges related to his Ukrainian lobbyingoperation, says a CNN report.

He and the special counsel's office are close toa deal for a guilty plea ahead of his upcomingtrial, according to a source familiar with thematter. A deal is expected but the sourcecautioned the two sides have been close before.

The incentive appears to be to reach a dealahead of a pretrial motion hearing scheduledfor Friday and before jury selection beginsMonday in DC District Court. That's also a weekbefore Manafort and prosecutors make newfilings in Virginia to discuss the charges andconvictions he faces there.

A plea Friday, September 14, would bring toan end one of the most active criminal cases inthe DC federal court system this year.Manafort's lawyers have filed hundreds ofpages in courts to fight prosecutors' allegationsand have brought two appeals unsuccessfully, and his legal fees mounted to more than amillion dollars, according to two peoplefamiliar with his case. Proceedings scheduledfor Monday would kick off a second grueling, expensive, politically explosive three-week-or-longer trial in federal court. Manafort facesseven counts of foreign lobbying violations, money laundering conspiracy and witnesstampering. The trial was likely to put on displaythe secret dealings of Washington's lobbyingand law firm elite.

Manafort is accused in DC of not disclosingto the Justice Department his work forUkrainian politicians and laundering that

income. Prosecutors allege he set up meetingswith lawmakers and fashioned public relationsefforts in the US on the Ukrainians' behalf.

A jury convicted Manafort in Virginia lastmonth on eight bank and tax fraud chargesrelated to his lobbying wealth after a three-weektrial. The evidence was largely about how he hadkept money off his books and relied on others tohelp him lie to banks and the government. Attrial, prosecutors showed how Manafort workedfor pro-Russian Ukrainians and funneledmillions of dollars in income through Cypriotaccounts. It was not clear if the deal with thespecial counsel's office would includecooperation. The plea is expected to address bothsets of charges he faces -- for the upcoming trialin DC and the 10 counts he still faces in Virginia.Manafort has not yet entered a new plea before thejudge in DC and prosecutors have not yet revealedthe terms of any deal reached with him. If a dealcomes through, it will likely be announced at thecourt hearing at 11 a.m. Friday.

CHICAGO, IL (TIP): Over the two daysleading up the launch of the World HinduCongress (WHC) 2018 in Chicago, delegationsfrom Organization for Minorities of India(OFMI) visited U.S. Congressman RajaKrishnamoorthi's (D-IL) district office inSchaumburg and his Capitol Hill office inWashington, D.C. to register protest againstthe congressman's presence at the event.

"The World Hindu Congress is a point ofconcern for us as citizens, as voters, and alsoas advocates of those who areunderrepresented because the World HinduCongress, under the guise of a religious event,is actually a partisan political event,"remarked activist Jada Bernard in aSeptember 6 meeting at the Schaumburgoffice.

In conversation with Staff AssistantYasmeen Bankole, he said the WHC wasorganized by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad(VHP) and featured Rashtriya SwayamsevakSangh (RSS) leaders as its keynote speakers.Describing how these groups fall under theumbrella term "Sangh Parivar," he explained,"Sangh Parivar groups represent Hindutva, which is Hindu supremacy. That ideology isresponsible for violence in the past, andbecause it's responsible for violence in thepast, any association with this group in thepresent could damage elections in the future. That's pretty much our warning. Voters careabout lives, even if the Sangh Parivar groupsdon't."

On the previous day, Pawan Singh visitedKrishnamoorthi's D.C. office. In a meetingwith Legislative Director Sam Morgante, he

explained how the RSS engages in violenceagainst minorities in India. Discussing thegroups involved in the conference, Singhnamed Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America(VHPA) and Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh(HSS), pointing out that the HSS is theinternational wing of the RSS.

"When Mr. Morgante asked me if the RSS inIndia is any different from the HSS, I told himno," says Singh. "Everything falls under theRSS shell organization. I told him our concernis that events like this are trying to legitimize

the genocides of minorities committed by theRSS. Our concern is that these terroristgroups should not be given a platform onAmerican soil." Speaking in Illinois, Bernardadded, "We also want to make othercongressional representatives aware of this, but we also want to kind of give a warningbecause, when congressional representativesshow up at events like this, it associates themwith the ideology."

Fugitive Vijay Mallya wrapsCong, BJP in war of words

NEW DELHI (TIP): The Congressand the Bharatiya Janata Partycontinued to target each other over theflight of businessman Vijay Mallya fromIndia in 2016, with Congress presidentRahul Gandhi on Thursday reiteratinghis demand for the resignation offinance minister Arun Jaitley, accusinghim of “colluding with” Mallya and“allowing the criminal to flee” and theBJP dismissing the charges with unionminister Piyush Goyal countering that itwas the Gandhi family’s “relations”with Mallya that caused banks to loanmoney to Mallya in violation of allnorms.

Mallya, who fled India even as a debtcourt in Bangalore was set to act againsthim for defaulting on loans issued byseveral banks led by the state-ownedState Bank of India, is in London wherea court will pronounce its verdict in anextradition hearing against him onDecember 10. The court finished hearingthe case on Wednesday.

Addressing a news conference at theCongress headquarters in Delhi, Gandhialso referred to his party colleague PLPunia, who alleged that he had seenMallya in conversation with Jaitley onMarch 1, 2016, a day before theKingfisher Airlines chief fled thecountry.

The context was a statement byMallya on Wednesday, claiming that hemet Jaitley before leaving India andoffered to settle his dues. Jaitleyimmediately rebutted Mallya’s claimand maintained that he had not giventhe businessman an appointment since2014, but that the latter used hisprivilege as a Member of Parliament(MP) and accosted him in Parliament.Mallya too admitted as muchsubsequently.

“Mr Jaitley is lying, the governmentis lying on Rafale and the government islying on Vijay Mallya. A meeting washeld with Mr Arun Jaitley and VijayMallya. The logistics of Mr Mallyaleaving the country were discussed inthat meeting,” Gandhi told reporters.

Describing it as an “open and shutcase of collusion”, the Congress chief

said there was some deal betweenJaitley and Mallya, and demanded thefinance minister’s resignation and aprobe into the matter.

Later in the evening, Gandhireiterated on Twitter his demand forJaitley’s resignation.

Punia, who was present in the newsconference, claimed that he saw thefinance minister and Mallya inconversation in the Central Hall ofParliament on March 1, 2016 and twoheld an elaborate 15-20 minute meeting.

“On March 3, we heard from themedia that he (Mallya) fled the countryon March 2. I have clearly stated aboutthis in each of my media interviews andTV discussions that I saw the two talkingto each other. There are CCTV cameras. We can all see the CCTV footage ofMarch 1, 2016 for the proof. If I amwrong, I will resign from politics.Otherwise Mr Jaitley should quitpolitics,” Punia said.

But the BJP rejected Punia’s claim.“Where was he for the last two-and-a-half years? Why was he silent for solong?” Goyal asked at a news conferenceat the BJP headquarters in Delhi.

“The finance minister has made itclear that he snubbed Mallya. Now theCongress got Punia to say he heard andsaw the conversation. Why after two

years did he suddenly remember theincident and decide to disclose it?” hesaid.

Goyal said Mallya was a criminal, hadno credibility as he was under the “glareof law” and his words could not be takenseriously. He asked Gandhi to resign, claiming that due to his family’s“relations” with Mallya, banks werepressurised by the UPA government tosanction loans to the fugitivebusinessman bypassing all norms, lawsand regulations.

Goyal alleged that former PrimeMinister Manmohan Singh had told themedia of his efforts to bail out privateairlines making losses, in an apparentreference to Kingfisher.

“On August 18, 2010, a company-specific letter was sent to RBI (ReserveBank of India) and the issue wasresolved on August 27. In October 2011,Mallya thanked Manmohan Singh andsaid he needed more help andsubsequently RBI was forced to come totheir aid again,” the minister claimed.

Charging the Congress withspreading lies, Goyal said, “When theybroke all laws with the help of banksand RBI and gave special allowances toKingfisher, then people lost their money. Now, when they are being exposed, theyare crying foul.”

Union minister Piyush Goyal and Congress president Rahul Gandhi held pressconferences on Septemer 13 after Vijay Mallya’s claim of meeting Union minister

Arun Jaitley sparked off a political storm.

Fuel price hike: As oppn looks to corner BJP, Mayawati stumps Cong

LUCKNOW (TIP): BSP presidentMayawati's remarks holding theprevious UPA government and the BJPequally responsible for the steep hike infuel prices has caught Congresscompletely by surprise. Congressleaders now feel Mayawati's commentswill raise a question mark on attempts atstriking an opposition unity ahead ofthe 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Mayawati's views on fuel price hikecame a day after her party stayed awayfrom the "Bharat bandh" called by theCongress on the issue.

"These remarks, at a time when theneed for unity among opposition partiesis being felt clearly among all partners, could send a wrong signal both to the

public and the ruling party which isalready doubting our strength," aCongress insider told news agency PTItoday, requesting anonymity. "Party

workers are not happy with Mayawati'sobservations and they are very scepticalabout her intentions," he said, addingthat the central party leadership needsto take serious note of it. A seniorCongress leader claimed that Mayawati'sviews on fuel price rise needs to beviewed as her bargaining tactic to getmore seats for her party in the upcomingassembly polls in Rajasthan, MadhyaPradesh and Chhattisgarh. "By doing so,she is sort of trying to gain an upperhand in negotiations for the assemblyseats in these states...it is, however, forthe central leadership to understandthat we should weigh our options andpotential before entering into anyalliance," he stressed.

Mesopotamian and EgyptianCivilizations of Middle East andNorth Africawere closely

interlinked and influenced by each other. Inmore ways than one these civilizations grewup in contrast of each other.

The structure of Government of Egyptwas central and authoritative andMesopotamian stressed mostly on citystate

layout. The difference in architecture washuge. Where the Egyptians liked majesticstructures, the Mesopotamian art wassimple and had a strong literary elementwhich Egypt lacked.

The bureaucracy was endlessly affected bythe structures. Mesopotamians weremorepractical in their thinking and did notbelieve in the Egyptian preparation forafterlife.

Both these civilizations carried outextensive trading, but the economic

implication varied in most cases.Mesopotamia was more technological in itsapproach and the environment was verydifficult to manage than the Nile valley. Thecontacts of trade were a lot vaster and farflung and special importance was given tothe merchant class and commercial law.

The social differences were also huge. Likethe difference in social status of women inthe two contrary civilizations. It is concluded

that in Egyptian society women were givenmore importance as well. To stabilize theEgyptian monarchy women of the upperclass were important and were treated withmuch care and respect which wasn't the casein Mesopotamian.

Since these civilizations grew up insimilar environments they had a symbioticrelationship. Their origins are largelydifferent; so is their way of working.

Egypt was a more stable civilizationcompared to Mesopotamia and also fuller oflife and fun.

Economically perhaps Mesopotamiaflourished more than Egypt, and in art andculture Egypt edged over Mesopotamia.

Harssh Madhok a very well-knownandwell-established businessman based inManhattan for last 30 years has

embarked on a new journey to fightbureaucratic, political and legal corruption inIndia. His new journey began after he made abig investment in Mumbai, Maharashtra forhis first state of the art dealership ofVolkswagen under the banner of NovaaMotors Pvt. Ltdin a70,000 SQ. Ft. facility on aleased property from Akshar Automobiles akaPatel Bros.on Aug. 14, 2017. His goal was to setup 25 state of the art Volkswagen dealershipsall over India in the first phase, and graduallymoving to 100 dealerships. All his plansturned sour because of the allegedconcealment of important material facts bylandlord, and the bureaucratic and politicalmeddling in the very first dealership that wasproviding jobs to 200 local residents.

On 30th October 2017, Thane MunicipalCorporation (TMC) sealed the entire 70,000 Sq.Ft. facility for non-payment of past Taxes andsome unauthorized construction. TMC wastold that this matter was between the landlordand TMC at the relevant time. The new ownerwho has invested crores of rupees must begiven time to rectify the problems whilerunning their day to day operations. Moreover, this was never disclosed bylandlord Patel bros that there is anyunauthorized construction and they owe backtaxes to TMC at the time of signing the lease. The facility remained closed for about 2months because TMC refused to cooperate.Rather, it put a condition to pay all the backtaxes with interest & penalty and correct theconstruction irregularities.

VolkswagenCompany advised Madhokthatsince thesales/service were shut down andcustomers faced inconvenience, let the facility

be taken over by Modi Auto Corp Pvt. Ltd akaNihar Modi an experienced Dealer withmultiple dealershipsin India, including one inMumbai. Attorneys for Madhok, Modi& Patelbros. exchanged e-mails, draft documents andheld meetings and finalized financialnumbers for the takeover by Modi with theconsent of Patel bros. Patel Bros.assuredMadhok that they will settle the issue of alltypes of financial losses sustained by himdueto the closure of the facilityseparately. Theyalso assured/agreedthat there will be no rentuntil the takeover is complete by Nihar Modi. The Security Deposit of Madhok will be heldby them andthey will not go to the court todispossess/evict Madhok.

All of a sudden, aroundmid-AprilPatelBros. changed their mindwhen the takeoverby Modi was near completion. AksharAutomobiles Agencies Pvt. Ltd. aka Patelbros. executed a new/separate Lease andLicense Agreement with M/s Tejpal MotorsLtd. of Mr. Pawan Kumar Kamal Alsinghanion May 3, 2018. Same day Patel brosapproached Madhok to vacate the premises

andsaid, otherwise "there could be deadlyconsequences." On June 6, 2018 their attorneysent a notice to Madhok to vacate the premiseswhich Madhok's attorneys replied on June 14,2018 explaining their legal rights ofpossession of the premises as per the leaseagreement dated Aug. 14, 2017.

On June 19, 2018, Showroom and workshoplocks were broken without any due processand Court orders. On the same day Madhoklodged a complaint with Kapurbawdi PoliceStation (KPS), Thane. On June 21, 2018, all therelevant documents were submitted with KPSand an FIR was registered vide CR No. I-177/2018 for the offence punishable U/s. 420,448, 506, 34 of IPC. Patel Brothers andDirectors of M/s. Tejal Motors Ltd. filed forAnticipatory Bail. Upon inspection withpolice, Madhokfound Tejpal Group contractorwas doing renovation work whilesome of hisbelongings were kept aside anda largenumber of articles were missing.

Initially the KPS was sympathetic toMadhok, but on 08.07.2018, his guards werepicked up by the KPS and threatened by an

Officer and told not to enter the premises andlet Tejpal group contractor work there.According to Madhok, police stopped takinginterest in his case after a call by a bureaucratfrom the chief minister's office.

At the press conference, Madhok claimedthat he had tried to contact the chiefminister's office and other higherofficials, including PMO & 20 CentralMinistries/Departments for a quickresolution of the issue. He also said that "I hadwaited for more than two months for aresolution of the issue despite statingfinancial, physical and emotional losses Isuffer due to the abrupt closing of mybusiness, but never got any response fromanyone in the government. Without namingany specific person, Madhok claimed that hehad received threats to life if he did not leaveMumbai and went back to America. He wasmoving in Mumbai with private armed bodyguards. He was literally forced to leaveMaharashtra to get back to the U.S.

He said that visiting Indian politicians, irrespective of their party affiliations or thestate they come from, should be confrontedwith the question of corruption, bribery, political and bureaucratic interference thatfrustrate NRI investors like him and generallydiscourage them from giving back to theirmotherland.

Madhok appealed to all the NRI's aroundthe world to share if they have similarexperience on his websitehttps://www.justiceformadhok.com Hefurther requested everyone should write tothe Indian Consulate or Embassy to demandjustice for him and protection for future NRIinvestors in India. He repeatedly called forending bureaucratic and politicalinterference saying that police were not ableto help him due to "pressures from higherauthorities." and urged the NRI community totake a united stand against corruption andinjustice to him.

8 THE INDIAN PANORAMAFRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2018EDITORIAL

In a national calamity, people look towards aleader to extend them empathy, a sense ofsomebody being in charge and a route to a

more secure future. By any measure, PinarayiVijayan, the Chief Minister of Kerala, haslived up to expectation on the first two aspectsand may be expected to play a role inidentifying the third after the State has had toface its biggest disaster in a century in theform of floods. He has reflected gravitas, displayed pragmatism and expressed awillingness to take assistance from any source. The last is a necessary corrective at a timewhen false pride, standing in the way ofaccepting the hand of friendship extendedfrom the outside, is projected as a desirablenationalism. At the very same time, it isnecessary to acknowledge the extraordinaryoutpouring of humanity and materialassistance towards the people of Kerala fromthe rest of India. It is difficult to recallsomething on this scale as a response to acalamity in a distant corner of the country inrecent times.

Natural capital and progressNow that the Chief Minister has affirmed

that the "last person has been rescued",rehabilitation is progressing, and plans areafoot to rebuild Kerala, it is hoped that the lastwill be approached with an open mind. Thiswould be a mindset that recognizes that muchmust change in Kerala's civil society, which inturn would trigger change at the level ofgovernance. Indeed, a paradigm shift, being aprofound change in the perception of progress,is needed. The central element in this newperception must be that a continuous decline ofa society's natural capital cannot be seen ascompatible with progress. While it may bepointed out that globally, many other societies, particularly to the east of India, have achievedthe same in terms of some standard socialindicators, it must be remembered that, as apart of India, it had also to deal with anossified social structure in the form of casteand the inequalities it perpetuated. Socialstratification was far less in east Asiansocieties making it easier for them totransform. For Kerala to have overcome thisburden through a non-violent politicalrevolution is a considerable achievement.

At times though, stories of our successrelayed across the world may lead us to besomewhat swayed by praise. This may havehappened to the leadership of Kerala societywhich extends beyond the political class to itsintellectuals. While focusing on certain aspectsof a society, external observers could missothers that are just as crucial in evaluating itsdevelopment. Laudatory evaluations of Keralahave masked the decline in natural capital andassociated ecosystem services that haveaccompanied the rise in income. The decline innatural capital has ranged from deforestation

that contributes to rainwater run-offcontributing to landslides, to sand-mining thatleads to rivers over-flowing their banks andbuilding on the flood plains that were meant toprovide a cushion. All of these contribute toflooding.

Too much consumptionWhen we have it upon the word of Madhav

Gadgil - who may be considered India'secological voice and has studied the Keralatopography and its alteration - that humanaction may have exacerbated the consequencesof the unusually heavy rain this year, we wouldbe advised to hear the message. We knowexactly the corrective actions necessary toreverse, possibly only at a glacial pace at that, the accumulated man-made factors responsiblefor this. At the center of it is consumption. Inrelation to the ecological damage that it canwreak, Kerala consumes too much. At thecenter of this consumption is luxury housingand commercial holiday resorts, of courseluxurious. So, at the back of much of thehuman factor that has exacerbated the floodingby changing the landscape is luxury housing. Itis significant too that some of this housing isnot even used or has very few persons living inthem. This is hardly a rational use of a scarceresource such as land, especially when it hasknown catastrophic consequences.

Unsustainable trajectoryAltogether, Kerala's much-acclaimed

development trajectory is unsustainable asdemonstrated during the recent floods andneeds a change. The needed change is radical, and the reality is that its past cannot be a guideto its future. This past has been one of humandevelopment, but Kerala society as a wholenow needs to reorient its relationship withnature. However inclusive this developmentmay have been - and there is reason to believethat some of the claims made are exaggerated -that by itself does not ensure that the assaulton nature will now end. Only the State's civilsociety can guarantee its future on this score.Political parties are loathe to speak the

language of responsible consumption for fearof losing out on votes.

While, going forward, a path-breakingenvironmental movement in Kerala's civilsociety is necessary, it does not mean thatgovernance in Kerala should be leftunaccountable out of concern for peaceability.Even in a past that has witnessed progress inthe form of an elimination of social barriers, government in Kerala has remainedunaccountable with respect to the economy.Malayalis have had to migrate in largenumbers, leaving their families behind, to keepthe home fires burning. Someone has to takeresponsibility for the pattern of land use inKerala, the pathologies of which extend tobuilding resorts on hillsides, turning everypublic space into a refuse dump for usedplastic, and the continuous alienation ofagricultural land, all of which may have had arole in exacerbating the floods. It is by nowclear that the decentralization of governmenthas been unable to prevent thesedevelopments. Land use in the State needsreview at the level of the State government.

Calling for a public reviewMr. Vijayan has been statesmanlike in

saying that he will take material assistancefrom every quarter. He must now extend thisapproach to listening to independent voices onthe rebuilding of Kerala. The obvious place tostart would be to institute a public review ofthe dams in Kerala and how they are operated, focusing in particular on how their operationmay have affected the flooding. Such a demandhas been made by a section of Kerala'slegislators. Even a conservative body such asthe World Bank had instituted an independentreview of the Sardar Sarovar Project in the1990s and tailored its policy accordingly.Considerations of both transparency andconfidence of the people in the functioning ofthe government machinery demand that sucha review be instituted at the earliest.

The old and the new: theU.S. OpenNovak Djokovic asserts greatness at theU.S. Open, Naomi Osaka shows she's hereto stay

There was a time when Pete Sampras'stally of 14 Grand Slam singles titles -the last of which came at the U.S. Open

in 2002 - seemed like the acme of sportingachievement in men's tennis. Little didanybody expect that in the next 16 years, across 64 Majors, not one or two but threeplayers would stand shoulder to shoulderwith the American great. On Sunday, NovakDjokovic became that third man, defeatingArgentine Juan Martin del Potro, for histhird U.S. Open title at Flushing Meadows. The 31-year-old Serb has never beenconsidered a once-in-a-generation talent, ashave Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, theones above him in the trophy count. Butnobody represents the modern-day game aswell as Djokovic. He is the ultimatepractitioner of the attrition-based baselinetennis, and at his best, with his supremelyefficient patrolling of the court, is nearinvincible. Over two weeks in New York hehit these high many times over. In fact, the 95-minute second set in the final was amicrocosm of Djokovic's last two years. Itwas long and weary as fortunes swung backand forth. But adversity energized him, andhe found a level which his opponent couldn'tmatch. Coming after his triumphant returnat Wimbledon in July, the latest success isevidence enough that technically, tacticallyand physically Djokovic is back to his best.

If it was about the restoration of the oldorder on the men's side, it was thecontinuation of the new in the women'ssection. There has been a first-time winner infour of the past six Grand Slam tournaments, and 20-year-old Naomi Osaka added to theeclectic mix by becoming the first Japaneseto win a Major. In Serena Williams, thewinner of 23 singles Slams, the most by anyplayer in the Open Era, Osaka faced theultimate challenge. It was also an inter-generational battle like none other. The 16-year age gap between Williams and Osakawas the second biggest in the Open Era for awomen's final, next only to Monica Seles (17)vs. Martina Navratilova (34) at the 1991 U.S.Open. To her immense credit, Osaka wasn'tawed by the stage. While growing up, she hadrevered Williams. After all, this is someonewho chose Williams as her subject for aschool essay in third grade. On Saturday sheplayed like she knew the 36-year-old's gamelike the back of her hand, absorbingeverything the American threw at her, andredirecting them with much more panache. The magnitude of her achievement wasnearly drowned out by the chaos in theaftermath of Williams's tirade against thechair umpire. Yet, the manner in whichOsaka, at an impressionable young age, closed out the match with a coldrelentlessness showed she is here to stay.

9PERESPECTIVETHE INDIAN PANORAMAFRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2018

The World Hindu Congress held aconference in Chicago in the first weekof September 2018, and it was attended

by about 3000 Hindus from around the world.Unfortunately, many speakers fouled. Here isan accounting of the two who were divisiveand sowed the seeds of ill-will between Indiancommunities.

Every faith group holds similarconferences. As Americans, we have anopportunity to guide these conferencestowards the goal of civility and pluralisticsocieties, that is, "Respecting the otherness ofothers." When we do that, conflicts fade, andsolutions emerge.

Each one of us must work towards buildingcohesive societies where we can live withoutapprehensions and tensions. No matter whatreligion you belong to, you must put in thateffort.

This conference listed over 100 speakersincluding the Rashtriya Swayam Sevak SanghChief Mohan Bhagwat and Vice President ofIndia Venkaiah Naidu. Can we expect them totalk about the idea of living your life andletting others live theirs? I hope so, but theirhistory points to the opposite. They want to'dictate' what you eat, wear or believe.

Almost all speakers at the event were hell-bent on breaking India to pieces by placingwedges between fellow Indians, at this time, Iam familiar with two of the most virulentspeakers, and they are Rajiv Malhotra and

Dilip Amin.We unequivocally condemn their false

preaching, but spare them, for they know not.Malhotra panders to the base instincts of

humans, some of whom have fallen for him. Afew weeks ago, he sent a message urgingHindus to contribute to help Hindus only inthe Kerala flood disaster and not Christiansand Muslims. Instead of criticizing him forhis egregious tweet, a small percent of Hindushas showered him with glory. I am not sure ifthese Indian Americans have imbibed theAmerican values of caring for fellow humans- which is the value in all religions.

Malhotra is not only wrong but advocatingevil acts in the Indian society, dividing itfurther, causing everyone to live in the hell oftensions.

These guys are frightening some of theinnocent and ignorant Hindus to believe that"Hinduism is in danger" and posingthemselves as the freaking saviors. Hinduismdoes not need these men to save it.It is a 5000-year-old robust religion and will always bethere like all other religions.

The other guy speaking at the World HinduCongress in Chicago is Dilip Amin, whoseposter heads as "Interfaith Marriages - SilentHolocaust of Hindus." On his website, he hasplaced a few good token messages ofinterfaith marriages, but his goal seems tofrighten Hindus to prevent their daughtersfrom marrying Muslims or Christians.

Amin rightfully claims that 38% of Hindusmarry outside their faith and alludes thatHinduism is losing out to Muslims andChristians. Dumbly, he also quotes a similarfigure of Muslims and Christians marryingoutside their faiths as if they are not losingtheir flock.

On his website, he points out that thesemarriages ultimately will not pan out as one18 years-married Hindu man says, we aredivorcing, she calls me a Kafir. This is thedumbest idea he is selling in Chicago.Whenpeople go through a divorce, they resort tosaying anything that pisses off the other. Ithas nothing to do with religion; it is all aboutpersonal conflicts. When a Hindu woman andman go through a divorce, they label someother reason for their divorce including anabusive, violent relationship, but when thereis a religion, they make a scapegoat ofreligion. There is no need to blame the faithfor the acts of individuals.

Over the last seven years, I have officiatednearly 75 interfaith weddings of allcombinations. Hindu-Muslim, Muslim-Jain,Hindu-Atheist, Christian-Muslim, Jewish-Muslim and other combinations. The onlydivorce thus far has been between a Jewish-Christian couple - not because of theirreligion, but because of the differences inraising their combined children.

They come to me because I do not requireconversions and deliver the sermon in boththeir religious traditions. Only two peoplehave converted thus far out of their free will, which is a part of the pre-wedding counseling.More at Interfaith Marriageshttp://interfaithmarriages.org/

Those who convert, do feel comfortablesacrificing their belief for the love they havefor the other, and to live with least conflictsand more harmony. Why should it matter toyou or me? Do we own them and their souls?

Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Jews orothers are individuals who have the freedomto fall in love with anyone and marry anyonefor their good. Who are you to dictate whomarries whom? American born kids willlaugh at these ridiculous attempts to saveHinduism.

One of the members of RSS writes, "Takeparticular note of World Vision - the worst ofthe whole bunch bent on harvesting the Lost(Hindu) souls in India via any means -deception, disguise in helping victims.Majority of Christian NGOs are not muchbetter. The Muslims Charities only help fellowMuslims."

This man is very short-sighted and ill-informed. If everyone in the society startscaring for their own, we will have a disasteron hand. During the Gujarat Earthquake,Tsunami, Kerala Floods and other disasters,Indians have come together for each other.Americans have gone all over the world toserve fellow humans. That's the right thing todo.

These men also need to know that SaintMother Teresa saved so many souls andbrought dignity to them; the Catholic

Charities have helped so many Dalits that theupper Caste Hindus refuse to even go near.Islamic Relief has gone and helped peopleregardless of their religion in every corner ofthe world and the majority of Hindus havedone the same and will continue to serve andcare for fellow beings.

If American Christian Charities had takenthe same stinky attitude and not sentshiploads of wheat and corn to non-Christiansduring the famine in the late sixties, Indiawould have suffered a major crisis, thatincludes extremist Hindus like the menquoted above.

There are millions of Dalit Hindus who livein utter humility and are humiliated on adaily basis. Let these fake saviors ofHinduism give them dignity, treat them asequals, consider them as Brahmins. If not, letthem find dignity in other faiths. To amajority of Hindus, Hinduism is an openuniversal tradition that has a large umbrellato give its beneficence to all faiths. Hinduismis not a dogmatic religion.

Didn't some of these guys come to Americafor making money? So, what if Dalits convertto Christianity for money and uplifting theirown lives. Hinduism is not in danger, theseguys are making it appear so, so that they cancash inon the fears of innocent and honestHindus. I appeal to every Indian not to supportdivisive individuals or organizations.

We all have to work towards creating bettersocieties.

Indian-Origin Man Killed byUnderage for Refusing toSell Cigarette Paper to Him

LONDON (TIP): An Indian-originshopkeeper, who refused to sell cigarette paperto a 16-year old, was murdered by theunderage. The teen has been sentenced to fouryears of imprisonment.

The shopkeeper, Vijaykumar Patelsustained a fatal head injury in theunprovoked attack by the boy, whose name hasnot been revealed for legal reasons, outside amini-market in Mill Hill, north London, inJanuary. The 49-year-old had refused to sell thetobacco related item to the boy and his twofriends who came into his shop on January 6because they were under 18 years of age.

Sentencing the teenager at a hearing on Sep7, Justice Stuart-Smith described the boy as a"time bomb", who had been out of on bail atthe time of the attack.

"The record, the facts of this case, thecontents of the PSR (pre-sentence report) withthe analysis of very high risk of causingsignificant harm. I do not find the PSRsurprising at all," the judge noted.

He sentenced the boy to four years'detention and a further three years on license,or under monitoring.

A trial at the Old Bailey court in Londonwas told the boy, who had five alcoholic drinksat a party on the evening of the attack, becameaggressive and shouted abuse before hurlinghimself at Patel outside the shop. The attackwas captured on CCTV and it was possible tosee the moment Mr Patel was hit.

Mr Patel was rushed to St Mary's Hospitalin central London but died the following dayfrom the injury to the back of his head. Theteenager had claimed self-defense but wasfound guilty of manslaughter at the end of thetrial in July.

"The CCTV shows he was simply standingwith his hands in his pockets doing nothing,"the judge told the boy during the sentencinghearing this week.

"What happened next was that youdeliberately moved to the left and launchedyourself at Mr Patel, taking him off his feetand to the ground. He was completelydefenseless and did not move. You struck him,"he said.

The court was informed that the Patelfamily was in India and therefore no victimimpact statement was presented.

Another shop worker had chased the boysaway with a billboard sign and a broomfollowing the incident. The boys were thenseen laughing and joking as they fled thescene.

The court was told the boy suffered fromAttention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD) and low intelligence and had previousconvictions for weapons offences and kickingand punching a teacher at his school.

His lawyer Philippa McAtasney said the boywas "not beyond hope and help" and had beenseriously affected by the stabbing of a youthworker friend who had confronted a drugdealer. The teenager himself had written aletter to trial judge expressing his remorseover the killing of Mr Patel.

MANILA (TIP): Philippine authoritieswere evacuating thousands of people fromthe path of the most powerful typhoon thisyear, closing schools, readying bulldozers forlandslides and placing rescuers and troopson full alert in the country’s north.

More than 4 million people live in areas atmost risk from the storm, which the JointTyphoon Warning Center in Hawaiicategorized as a super typhoon withpowerful winds and gusts equivalent to acategory 5 Atlantic hurricane.

Typhoon Mangkhut is on course to hitnortheastern Cagayan province earlySaturday. It was tracked on Friday about 400kilometers away in the Pacific withsustained winds of 205 kilometers per hourand gusts of up to 255 kph, Philippineforecasters said.

With a massive raincloud band 900kilometers wide, combined with seasonalmonsoon rains, the typhoon could bringheavy to intense rains that could set offlandslides and flash floods, the forecasterssaid.

Storm warnings have been raised in 25provinces across the main northern island ofLuzon, restricting sea and air travel.

Office of Civil Defense chief RicardoJalad told an emergency meeting led byPresident Rodrigo Duterte that about 4.2million people in Cagayan, nearby Isabelaprovince and outlying regions arevulnerable to the most destructive effectsnear the typhoon’s 125-kilometer-wide eye.Nearly 48,000 houses in those high-risk areasare made of light materials and vulnerableto Mangkhut’s ferocious winds.

Across the north on Thursday, residentscovered glass windows with wooden boards, strengthened houses with rope and bracesand moved fishing boats to safety.

Cagayan Gov. Manuel Mamba said by

telephone that evacuations of residents fromrisky coastal villages and islandmunicipalities north of the rice-and corn-producing province of 1.2 million peoplehave started and school classes at all levelshave been cancelled.

A change in the typhoon’s track promptedauthorities to rapidly reassess where toredeploy emergency teams and supplies,Mamba said. Duterte asked Cabinet officialsfrom the north to help oversee disaster-response work if needed, and told reportersit was too early to consider seeking foreignaid. “It would depend on the severity of thecrisis,” Duterte said. “If it flattenseverything, maybe we need to have somehelp.” The typhoon is approaching at thestart of the rice and corn harvesting seasonin Cagayan, a major agricultural producer, and farmers were scrambling to save whatthey could of their crops, Mamba said.

The threat to agriculture comes as thePhilippines tries to cope with rice shortages.Officials said other northern provinces

started evacuating residents Thursday fromhigh-risk areas, including in northernmountain provinces prone to landslides.

Duterte canceled his appearance at amissile test firing aboard a navy ship offnorthern Bataan province due to theapproaching typhoon. On Guam, whereMangkhut already passed, residents dealtwith flooded streets, downed trees andwidespread power outages. Governmentagencies were conducting damageassessments and clearing roads, according tothe Pacific Daily News.

About 80 percent of the US territory waswithout power but it was restored byThursday morning. Mangkhut, a Thai wordfor the mangosteen fruit, is the 15th stormthis year to batter the Philippines, which ishit by about 20 a year and is considered oneof the world’s most disaster-prone countries.

Yemen war a ‘living hell’ forchildren- UNICEF

SANAA (TIP): In the malnutrition ward of a hospital inthe Yemeni capital Sanaa, doctors weigh toddlers withprotruding rib cages and skeletal limbs.

Twenty children, most under the age of two, being treatedat the ward in Sab’een Hospital are among hundreds ofthousands of children suffering from severe malnutrition inthe impoverished country that has been ravaged by a morethan three years of war.

“The conflict has made Yemen a living hell for itschildren,” Meritxell Relano, UNICEF Representative inYemen, told Reuters.

She said more than 11 million children, or about 80 percent of the country’s population under the age of 18, werefacing the threat of food shortages, disease, displacementand acute lack of access to basic social services.

“An estimated 1.8 million children are malnourished inthe country. Nearly 400,000 of them are severely acutemalnourished and they are fighting for their lives everyday.” A coalition of Sunni Muslim Arab states, led by SaudiArabia and the United Arab Emirates, intervened inYemen’s war in 2015 against the Iranian-aligned Houthisafter they drove the internationally recognised governmentout of the capital Sanaa.

The war has unleashed the world’s most urgenthumanitarian crisis in the nation of 28 million, where 8.4million people are believed to be on the verge of starvationand 22 million people are dependent on aid.

The coalition has imposed stringent measures on importsinto Yemen to prevent the Houthis from smuggling weaponsbut the checks have slowed the flow of commercial goodsand vital aid into the country. Just hours before the premiere of The Predator at theToronto International Film Festival, Twentieth CenturyFox said it removed a scene from the film with actor

Steven Wilder Striegel after learning he is a registered sexoffender.

A spokesperson for Fox on Thursday said Striegel's singlescene in the film was promptly cut after the studio learned ofStriegel's background. Fox said it didn't know of the actor'shistory because of legal limitations on running backgroundchecks on actors.

"Our studio was not aware of Mr Striegel's backgroundwhen he was hired," said the spokesperson. "Several weeksago, when the studio learned the details, his one scene in thefilm was removed within 24 hours."

Shane Black, director of the fourth installment in the sci-fiaction franchise, has long been a friend of Striegel's and hasfrequently cast him in his films.

Black said in a statement, "Having read this morning'snews reports, it has sadly become clear to me that I wasmisled by a friend I really wanted to believe was telling methe truth when he described the circumstances of hisconviction. I believe strongly in giving people second chances

— but sometimes you discover that chance is not aswarranted as you may have hoped. "After learning more

about the affidavit, transcripts and additional detailssurrounding Steve Striegel's sentence, I am deeplydisappointed in myself. I apologize to all of those, past andpresent, I've let down by having Steve around them withoutgiving them a voice in the decision."

The Los Angeles Times first reported the re-editing of ThePredator to remove Striegel. It said that Fox was alerted toStriegel's background by actress Olivia Munn. Munn stars inthe film, and played opposite Striegel in his one scene.

Striegel plead guilty in 2010 for attempting to entice a 14-year-old female into a sexual relationship via the internet. Heserved six months in jail. The former Melrose Place actor haspreviously appeared in Black's 2013 film Iron Man 3 and his2016 comedy The Nice Guys.

Black told The Los Angeles Times: "I personally chose tohelp a friend. I can understand others might disapprove, ashis conviction was on a sensitive charge and not to be takenlightly."

Munn, however, told the LA Times that she refuses to“accept Shane’s apology,” because it “ wasn’t given to mepersonally... A real apology has to be done privately -- not justread publicly and I read it with the rest of the world.”

HENRY CAVILL, BENAFFLECK QUIT, DCLOSES ITS BATMAN,SUPERMAN: REPORT

In a shocking development, Henry Cavillreportedly is no longer part of DC cinematicuniverse as Superman. The actor, who first

appeared as the superhero in 2013’s Man ofSteel, and later reprised his role in Superman VBatman and last year’s Justice League, isparting ways with Warner Bros, sources tellThe Hollywood Reporter.

According to insiders, the developmentcomes after talks of Cavill’s cameo in Shazam!did not come to fruition due to schedulingconflicts. “There’s a recognition that some partsof the previous movies didn’t work,” says thestudio insider. Another source says Warners istrying to hit a “reset” button with the DCuniverse.

Talks are on to find new face for the belovedsuperhero. “Superman is like James Bond, andafter a certain run you have to look at newactors,” says a studio source.

The source also added that the decisionsolidified as Cavill recently signed on to star inNetflix’s The Witcher. Another insider, however, says that the series commitment came after theimpasse with Warners, suggesting a change inthe studio’s strategy. It is being said the studiohas shifted its focus to a Supergirl movie, whichwill be an origin story featuring a teensuperheroine, which effectively removes anactor of Cavill’s age from the storyline asSuperman, aka Kal-El, would be an infant, according to DC lore.

Aung San Suu Kyi sayshandling of RohingyaMuslims could have beenbetter

HANOI, MAYAMAR (TIP): In the face of globalcondemnation, Myanmar’s leader and Nobel PeacePrize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi on Thursday saidthat the handling of Rohingya Muslims, 700,000 ofwhom have fled to Bangladesh amid a brutal militarycampaign, could have been better, but still defendedsecurity forces from charges of civilian atrocities.

Myanmar’s army is accused of mass rape, killingsand setting fire to thousands of homes in theaftermath of an August 2017 attack by Rohingyamilitants on security outposts.

A report issued two weeks ago by a speciallyappointed UN human rights team recommendedprosecuting senior Myanmar commanders forgenocide and other crimes.

“There are of course ways in which with hindsightI think the situation could have been handled better,”Suu Kyi said, responding to questions during a one-on-one discussion at the World Economic Forum’sregional meeting in Hanoi.

She still defended Myanmar security forces, sayingthat all groups in western Rakhine state had to beprotected. “We have to be fair to all sides,” Suu Kyisaid. “The rule of law must apply to everyone. Wecannot choose and pick.”

Suu Kyi said the situation was complicated by themyriad ethnic minorities in the area, some of whichare at risk of disappearing entirely and which includenot just the Muslims and Rakhine Buddhists.

Although the violence in Rakhine state has eased,Myanmar has to deal with its aftermath, especially therepatriation of the Muslim Rohingya who fled and theunderlying causes of tension that makes them targetsof discrimination and repression in overwhelminglyBuddhist Myanmar.

Suu Kyi said that Myanmar is prepared to takethose who fled back, but their return has beencomplicated by the fact that two governments areinvolved. Aid workers say conditions for a safe andorderly return of the refugees have not been met.

Suu Kyi also rejected criticism over the show-trialconviction last week of two Reuters news agencyreporters who helped expose extrajudicial killings of10 Rohingya men and boys. The reporters were bothsentenced to seven years’ imprisonment on charges ofpossessing state secrets. US Vice President Mike Penceis among those who have condemned the verdicts andcalled for the journalists’ release.

“The case has been held in open court,” Suu Kyisaid. “If anyone feels there has been a miscarriage ofjustice I would like them to point it out.”

“They were not jailed because they werejournalists. They were jailed because … the court hasdecided they have broken the Official Secrets Act,” shesaid. Suu Kyi noted that the two can appeal theirsentences. The lawyers for the journalists have saidthey will do whatever they can to get their clientsfreed. The two men testified that they had been framedby the police. The case has drawn worldwide attentionas an example of how democratic reforms in long-isolated Myanmar have stalled under Suu Kyi’scivilian government, which took power in 2016.

Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director for HumanRights Watch, said that Suu Kyi was mistaken insaying the case was handled in accordance with the“rule of law.” “She fails to understand that real ‘rule oflaw’ means respect for evidence presented in court, actions brought based on clearly defined andproportionate laws, and independence of the judiciaryfrom influence by the government or security forces,”he said in a statement. ISI is Pakistan's 'first line ofdefence' says Pakistani PM

ISLAMABAD (TIP): Pakistan PrimeMinister Imran Khan has described theISI as "our first line of defence" as hevisited for the first time the headquartersof the powerful spy agency.

Khan, along with senior Cabinetministers, were briefed on Wednesday indetail on the various strategicintelligence and national securitymatters by the senior officials of theInter-Services Intelligence, an officialstatement said.

"The Prime Minister laudedcontributions of the ISI towards nationalsecurity especially in the ongoingcounter terrorism effort. The PrimeMinister said that the ISI is our first lineof defence and stands out as bestintelligence agency of the world," thestatement issued by the Inter-ServicesPublic Relations (ISPR), the media wingof the military said.

Khan, who was sworn-in as the 22ndPrime Minister on August 18, has alreadyvisited the General Headquarters ofPakistan Army twice – first to get an in-depth briefing on the internal securityand geo-strategic situation and then toattend the Defence and Martyrs Day

ceremony on September 6.Khan has been accused by his critics of

being the security establishment's man.The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz

(PML-N) party has accused him ofreaching the Prime Minister Housethrough the support of the powerfulsecurity establishment.

Khan told ISI officials that his

government and the people of Pakistanfirmly stood behind the armed forces andintelligence agencies and acknowledgedthe "unprecedented achievements" ofthese institutions, the statement said.

Earlier, Army chief Gen. Qamar JavedBajwa and ISI Director General Lt Gen.Naveed Mukhtar received Khan on hisarrival. (PTI)

Pakistan is Responsiblefor the Corpses |in Afghanistan

KABUL (TIP): Mina, a widow, and her five children spotted corpses on theground as she fled Ghazni. The street was covered with the bodies of civiliansand policemen; more than 200 Afghans had been killed. It was August 10 andthe Taliban had just stormed into the city of Ghazni, which they wouldcontrol for nearly five days.

While American forces were assisting the Afghan government in retakingGhazni, the Taliban staged deadly assaults in Faryab and Baghlan.

These attacks are not a coincidence.Despite the billions of dollars that Washington has expended on its longest

war, the Taliban has been getting stronger. In an attempt to turn the tide, Washington has been holding face-to-face

talks with the Taliban for the first time. These discussions are intended toinduce the Taliban into suspending its insurgency and entering peace talkswith the Afghan government by addressing the Taliban’s demand: thewithdrawal of international forces.

However, the Taliban was fighting the Afghan government long before theUnited States entered the scene in 2001. Nearly seven years prior, in 1994, theTaliban began its insurgency in Kandahar, and it’s continued unabated fornearly a quarter century.

The Taliban frequently changes its narrative, justifying its insurgencyaccording to Afghanistan’s political climate. During the 1990s, it rationalizedinsurgency by labeling the Mujahideen, the ruling elite, as corrupt. Now itjustifies the war by portraying the assistance of the international communityas a foreign occupation.

These changing narratives are a convenient tactic employed by the Talibanto conceal its real motive: advancing the interests of neighboring Pakistan inAfghanistan.

Not only is the Taliban an asset of Pakistan, but Pakistan is the Taliban’sadministrative authority.

During the Taliban’s reign, Peter Tomsen, former United States SpecialEnvoy to Afghanistan, noted that Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), “played the major role in military matters, fromorganizing offenses to equipping the forces that were fighting, and evenputting out public statements. …There was a colonel in Herat and there was amajor in Kandahar—they were coaching Mullah Omar and other Taliban, who were for the most part semiliterate, on how to administer their areas andhow to proceed militarily.”

This continues to be the case today, and by all accounts, the Americanforeign policy and military establishment is well aware of it. PresidentTrump has publicly accused Pakistan of “lies and deceit” and a $300 millionaid package to the country was canceled just last week. Pakistan hascountered by saying they are being made the scapegoat for American failuresin Afghanistan. (PTI)

Sri Lanka to ban Hinduanimal sacrifice

COLOMBO (TIP): Sri Lanka's government hasagreed to ban the ritual sacrifice of animals andbirds at Hindu temples on the island.

A government spokesman told the BBC the movewas proposed by the Hindu Religious Affairsministry, and said most moderate Hindu groupssupport it.

Some Hindus sacrifice goats, buffalo calves andchickens at temples as an offering to their deities.

But the practice has attracted years of protests inBuddhist-majority Sri Lanka, where critics call itinhumane.

Animals sacrificed at Hindu and Muslimreligious festivals are often left to bleed to death, which angers animal rights activists and someBuddhist groups. Many practicing Hindus choosenot to sacrifice animals - but those who do haveargued that the ban would impinge on theirreligious freedoms. They say such sacrifices are anancient part of their faith that must be allowed tocontinue. It appears the law would not cover animalsacrifice by Muslims, who are the third-biggestreligious group in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka hasexperienced deadly religious violence in recentyears, including anti-Muslim riots that killed threepeople in March. Nearly 450 Muslim-owned homesand shops were damaged. (BBC)

MORE THAN 18 MN NEW CANCER CASES EXPECTEDTHIS YEAR: UN STUDY

More than 18 million new cases of cancer are expectedthis year and it is estimated that 9.6 million peoplewill die from various forms of the disease in 2018,

the UN’s International Agency for Research on Cancer(IARC) said.

According to IARC, a specialised cancer agency of theWorld Health Organisation, the disease is a growing globalhealth threat. One in five men and one in six womenworldwide develop cancer during their lifetime, and one ineight men and one in 11 women die from it, IARC’s GlobalCancer Observatory said on Wednesday in its first reportsince 2012.

“These new figures highlight that much remains to bedone to address the alarming rise in the cancer burdenglobally and that prevention has a key role to play,” IARCDirector Christopher Wild said.

“Efficient prevention and early detection policies must beimplemented urgently to complement treatments in order tocontrol this devastating disease across the world,” Wildadded.

In India, the number of new cancer cases in 2018 amongmale and female and in all ages stood at 1,157,294. Of this,587,249 were women diagnosed with cancer.

The risk of developing cancer before the age of 75 yearswas 9.81 per cent for males and 9.42 per cent for females. Thenumber of cancer deaths in the country stood at 784,821. Therisk of dying from cancer before the age of 75 years was 7.34per cent for males and 6.28 per cent for females. The top fivemost frequent cancers for both male and female in India arebreast, lip and oral cavity, cervix and uteri, lung, stomach.

The report said that globally the increasing cancer burdenis due to several factors, including population growth andageing as well as the changing prevalence of certain causesof cancer linked to social and economic development. This isparticularly true in rapidly growing economies, where a shiftis observed from cancers related to poverty and infections tocancers associated with lifestyles more typical ofindustrialized countries, it said.

Effective prevention efforts may explain the observeddecrease in incidence rates for some cancers, such as lungcancer and cervical cancer. However, the new data show thatmost countries are still faced with an increase in the absolutenumber of cases being diagnosed and requiring treatmentand care. Source: PTI

BINGE DRINKING AFFECTSMALE AND FEMALE BRAINS

DIFFERENTLYWhile binge drinking affects the

health of both males andfemales, the effect of gene

expression in an area of the brain linkedto addiction was found to be different, finds a new study. Repeated bingedrinking was found to significantly altermolecular pathways in the nucleusaccumbens — a region of the brainlinked to addiction.

But, in females, the genes linked tohormone signalling and immunefunction are altered, whereas in malesgenes related to nerve signalling areaffected. The study has significantimplications for the treatment of alcoholuse disorder as they emphasise theimportance of tailoring effectivetherapies towards male and femalepatients, said researchers led byDeborah Finn, Professor at OregonHealth and Science University.

Repeated binge drinking can be a riskfactor for the development of alcoholdependence. For the study, published inthe journal Frontiers in Genetics, theteam analysed gene expression innucleus accumbens. “We examined theeffect of repeated binge drinking on theexpression of 384 genes previouslyidentified as important in addiction andmood disorders,” Finn said.

Of a total of 106 genes regulated bybinge drinking, only 14 were regulatedin both males and females, representingcommon targets to binge drinking.Interestingly, only 4 of these 14 geneswere regulated in the same direction andthe top 30 genes regulated by bingedrinking in each sex differed markedly.

“We have shown thatpharmacologically manipulating a

pathway in both sexes that only wasaffected by binge drinking in males didnot decrease binge drinking in females;binge drinking was only decreased inmales,” Finn explained.

She noted that a consideration of sexis critical in the development ofpotential pharmacological therapies forthe treatment of alcohol use disorder.

BRAIN CELLS CAN HELP PEOPLE FEELBRAVE, DEAL WITH ANXIETY

Ever wondered why some peoplecomfortably walk betweenskyscrapers on a high-wire while

others freeze at the mere thought ofclimbing off escalators in a shopping mall?It could be the presence of a certain type ofcells in the brain’s hippocampus, a studyhas found.

The findings showed that neuronsknown as OLM cells in the hippocampusplay a significant role in risk takingbehaviour and anxiety. The discovery ofthese neurons and their role in anxietyand risk-taking may open a path for thedevelopment of highly efficientanxiolytics and antidepressants withoutcommon side-effects, such as apathy, theresearchers said. The OLM cells, whenstimulated, produce a brain rhythm that ispresent when animals feel safe in athreatening environment (for example, when they are hiding from a predator butaware of the predator’s proximity). OLMcells were the “gatekeepers” of memories inthe hippocampus and these cells were verysensitive to nicotine. “This finding mayexplain why people binge-smoke when theyare anxious,” said Richardson Leao, from

the Brain Institute of the Federal Universityof Rio Grande do Norte in Brazil.Manipulation of OLM cells can controlanxiety and risk-taking behaviours, theresearchers said, in the paper published inthe journal Nature Communications. Whileadaptive (or normal) anxiety is essential forsurvival because it protects us from harm,

but excess levels can be dysfunctional andseverely interfere with daily life.

Thus, to act in a single brain region andin a very specific group of cells to controlanxiety may be a major breakthrough intreating anxiety and associated disorderslike depression, the researchers noted.

MYSTERIOUS 'LUNAR SWIRLS'POINT TO MOON'S VOLCANIC,MAGNETIC PAST

The mysterious lunar swirls, one of the solar system'smost beautiful optical anomalies, may be a relic of theMoon's ancient volcanic activity and an internally

generated magnetic field, scientists say.Lunar swirls resemble bright, snaky clouds painted on the

Moon's dark surface. The most famous, called ReinerGamma, is about 40 miles long and popular with backyardastronomers.

Most lunar swirls share their locations with powerful, localised magnetic fields. The bright-and-dark patterns mayresult when those magnetic fields deflect particles from thesolar wind and cause some parts of the lunar surface toweather more slowly.

"But the cause of those magnetic fields, and thus of theswirls themselves, had long been a mystery," said SoniaTikoo, an assistant professor in Rutgers University in the US.

"To solve it, we had to find out what kind of geologicalfeature could produce these magnetic fields—and why theirmagnetism is so powerful," said Tikoo, coauthor of the studypublished in the ‘Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets’.

Working with what is known about the intricate geometryof lunar swirls, and the strengths of the magnetic fieldsassociated with them, the researchers developedmathematical models for the geological

magnets”. They found that each swirl must stand above amagnetic object that is narrow and buried close to the moon'ssurface.

The picture is consistent with lava tubes, long, narrowstructures formed by flowing lava during volcanic eruptions;or with lava dikes, vertical sheets of magma injected into thelunar crust.

Past experiments have found that many Moon rocksbecome highly magnetic when heated more than 600 degreesCelsius in an oxygen-free environment.

That is because certain minerals break down at hightemperatures and release metallic iron. If there happens tobe a strong enough magnetic field nearby, the newly formediron will become magnetised along the direction of that field.

This does not normally happen on Earth, where free-floating oxygen binds with the iron. It would not happentoday on the Moon, where there is no global magnetic field tomagnetise the iron. Source: PTI

NASA's Kepler probe restartsscience operations

NASA's planet hunting Kepler space telescope—whichhas led to the discovery of over 2,300 planets so far—was roused from sleep mode and has restarted its

scientific operations. The US space agency has been closely monitoring the

probe since it is expected to run out of fuel soon. The spacecraft went into sleep mode after successfully

downloading data from its 18th observation campaign."After being roused from sleep mode the spacecraft's

configuration has been modified due to unusual behaviourexhibited by one of the thrusters," NASA said in a statement.

"Preliminary indications are that the telescope's pointingperformance may be somewhat degraded," it said.

In 2013, Kepler's primary mission ended when a secondreaction wheel broke, rendering it unable to hold its gazesteady at the original field of view.

The spacecraft was given a new lease on life by using thepressure of sunlight to maintain its pointing, like a kayaksteering into the current.

Google to discontinue ‘Inboxby Gmail’ from March 2019

Google is set to shut down itsalternate mailing app “Inbox” inMarch 2019, giving users time to

shift to the traditional Gmail by then, the company has said in a blog post.

Launched in 2014, “Inbox” wasintroduced as an innovative new emailapp that lived alongside Gmail andserved as an experimental platform forGoogle to try newer mailing featuresthat could be incorporated in Gmaillater.

However, it could not gather enoughuser base and updates to justify itsexistence.

“We want to take a more focussedapproach to help us bring the best emailexperience to everyone. As a result,we’re planning to focus solely on Gmail

and say goodbye to ‘Inbox’ at the end ofMarch 2019,” Matthew Izatt, Product

Manager at Gmail, wrote in a blog postlate on Wednesday.

“Inbox” came with provisions forsnoozing emails to later, trying latestartificial intelligence (AI)-poweredexperiences like Smart Reply, Nudges,high-priority notifications along withgesture and bundling features to managethe messages.

“We know change is hard, so we’vecreated a transition guide to help youswitch from Inbox to the new Gmail withease,” Izatt added.

Earlier in 2018, a revamped version ofGmail was introduced with newerfeatures like “Smart Compose” thathelps users draft emails faster andseveral other features were picked upfrom “Inbox.”

In case you didn’t know, The BoringCompany is Elon Musk’s new pet projectto create low-cost tunnels to fix theproblem of traffic congestion. Thecompany is already working on a fast-lane tunnel between New York andWashington DC. Musk says the tunnelwill help people commute between thetwo cities in less than 30 minutes.

“To solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic, roads must go 3D,which means either flying cars ortunnels. Unlike flying cars, tunnels areweatherproof, out of sight and won’t fallon your head. A large network of

tunnels many levels deep would fixcongestion in any city, no matter howlarge it grew (just keep adding levels). The key to making this work isincreasing tunneling speed anddropping costs by a factor of 10 or more— this is the goal of The Boring

Company,” explains the company on itswebsite.

That said, The Boring Company is nostranger in introducing unconventionalproducts. Earlier this year, it launched aflamethrower priced at $500. It also soldThe Boring Company hats.

Rupee drop: India mulls tappingits citizens overseas

India expressed concern about the rupee’s decline for thefirst time and said it’s considering a plan to tap itscitizens overseas, according to a government official.

The local currency, Asia’s worst performing major so farthis year, which plunged as much as 1.3 percent to a recordlow Monday, pared losses after the comments. The relief maybe temporary given concerns about a widening currentaccount and trade gap on the back of elevated prices of oil,India’s biggest import item.

The finance ministry and the Reserve Bank of India are intouch and the central bank is intervening in the currencymarket when needed, the government official told reportersin New Delhi on Monday, asking not to be identified citingrules. The RBI has been selling dollars, albeit in a restrainedmanner, leading to a drop in India’s foreign exchangereserves to $400 billion from a record high of $426 billion inmid-April.

The official said India’s reserves position was comfortableand authorities could take measures such as tappingoverseas Indians and other moves to plug the current accountgap. In 2013, the central bank lured inflows of about $34billion through discounted foreign-currency swaps, helpinglift the rupee from a record low.

Companies shift productionoverseas to avoid US tariffs

BEIJING (TIP): A growing numberof Chinese companies are adopting acrafty way to evade US PresidentDonald Trump’s tariffs: remove the“Made in China” label by shiftingproduction to countries such asVietnam, Serbia and Mexico.

The world’s two largest economieshave been locked in a months-long tradefight after Trump imposed 25% customsduties on $50 billion worth of Chinesegoods this summer, triggering a swifttit-for-tat response from Beijing.

Chinese factories making everythingfrom bikes to tyres, plastics and textilesare moving assembly lines abroad toskirt higher customs taxes on theirexports to the United States andelsewhere, according to public filings.

Hl Corp, a Shenzhen-listed bike partsmaker, made clear to investors lastmonth that tariffs were in mind when itdecided to move production to Vietnam.

The factory will “reduce and evade”the impact of tariffs, managementwrote, noting Trump hit e-bikes inAugust, with new border taxes plannedfor bicycles and their parts.

Trump warned last week those tariffs-- targeting $200 billion in Chineseimports -- could come “very soon”.

“It’s inevitable that the new dutieswill lead companies to review theirsupply chains globally -- overnight theywill become 25 percent less competitivethan they were,” said ChristopherRogers, a supply chain expert at tradedata firm Panjiva.

Supply chains have already begunrelocating out of China in recent yearsas its rising labour and environmentalprotection costs have made the countryless attractive.

Tariffs are adding fuel to the fire, experts and companies say.

“China-US trade frictions areaccelerating the trend of the globalvalue chain changing shape,” said CuiFan, research director at the ChinaSociety of WTO Studies, a think tankaffiliated with the commerce ministry.

“The shifting abroad of labour-intensive assembly could bring

unemployment problems and this needsto be closely watched,” Cui said, addingthe shift would not help the US’s overalltrade deficit.

Chinese firms race abroadThe growing list of foreign firms

moving supply chains away from China-- toy company Hasbro, camera makerOlympus, shoe brands Deckers andSteve Madden, among many others --already has Beijing worried.

Less discussed are the Chinesefactories doing the same.

Zhejiang Hailide New Material shipsmuch of its industrial yarns, tyre cordfabric, and printing materials from itsplant in eastern Zhejiang province tothe US and other countries.

Trump’s first wave of tariffs on $50billion in goods this summer hit someof its exports; the next round of $200billion looks like it will hit severalmore.

“Currently all of our company’sproduction is in China. To better evadethe risks of anti-dumping cases andtariff hikes, our company has after

lengthy investigation decided to set up afactory in Vietnam,” executives toldinvestors last month.

“We hope to speed up itsconstruction, and hope in the future itcan handle production for theAmerican market,” a company vicepresident said of the $155 millioninvestment that will ramp upproduction by 50%.

Other moves abroad spurred on bytariff risks include a garment makergoing to Myanmar, a mattress companyopening a plant in Thailand and anelectronic motor producer acquiring aMexico-based factory, according topublic filings from the firms.

Linglong Tyre is relying mostly onlow cost credit to build a $994 millionplant in Serbia.

The entire tyre industry faces a“grim trade friction situation”,Linglong told investors last month, citing “one after another” anti-dumpingcases against China. “Building afactory abroad allows ‘indirect growth,’by evading international tradebarriers.” Source: AFP

For those in an evacuation area, "there is still time to getout," Cooper said Thursday. "Don't risk your life riding out amonster storm."

"You're potentially risking the life of a first responder whowould try to come and help you, and we don't need that," headded. "I know it's difficult to move, and I know that you areleaving things behind that you don't want to leave behind, butno possession is worth your life."

Inferno in Boston after...from some 50 departments raced for hours from one blaze to

another and utility crews rushed to shut off gas and electricityin the area to prevent further ignitions.

Police drove up and down streets with bull horns tellingresidents to vacate their homes immediately.

Fire investigators suspected "over-pressurization of a gasmain" belonging to Columbia Gas of Massachusetts led to theseries of explosions and fires, Andover Fire Chief MichaelMansfield told a news conference.

Columbia Gas, a unit of the utility giant NiSource Inc(NI.N), announced earlier on Thursday that it would beupgrading gas lines in neighborhoods across the state, including the area where the explosions occurred. However, itwas not immediately known whether any work was being donein those communities at the time.

"Columbia Gas is investigating what happened on its systemtoday," NiSource spokesman Ken Stammen said.

The U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline andHazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) said itwas sending a team to support the state's emergency responseefforts.

The former head of the agency, Brigham McCown, called theseries of gas explosions "unprecedented, at least in recentmemory."

"I can't think of a series of natural gas-related incidents likethis," McCown, who led PHMSA under President George W.Bush, told Reuters by telephone. "We have had similar issueson a much smaller scale."

He said the National Transportation Safety Board was alsosending a team headed by its chairman, Robert Sumwalt, toinvestigate the disaster.

Live TV images showed firefighters battling blazes in theformer mill towns of Lawrence, Andover and North Andover, about 25 miles (40 km) north of the Massachusetts capital.

The streets were darkened after nightfall with power cut offto the area as a precaution.

Lawrence General Hospital said on its Facebook page ittreated 13 people for injuries ranging from smoke inhalation toblast trauma. One of those patients, who was in criticalcondition, was transported to Massachusetts General Hospitalin Boston. Officials told Reuters that patient later died.

At least three people, including one firefighter, were hurt inAndover, the town said in a statement, but it was unclearwhether any of those individuals were among the patientstreated in Lawrence, some of whom were later released.

"This has been an overwhelming event," Mansfield toldreporters, saying that fire companies responding to blazeswere putting one house fire out only to discover another houseon fire as they finished their work. "This event is not overtonight. This event will probably go on."

State police urged residents served by Columbia Gas toevacuate their homes. Lawrence Mayor Dan Rivera saidresidents in the southern part of the city had been asked toleave their homes whether or not they were Columbia Gascustomers, due to planned power cuts.

Sri Krishna was a teacher from the verybeginning of his life. Even before heentered into the physical world he acted

as a teacher. Before he entered into hismother’s womb, he came to his father who hadbeen imprisoned by the king and said, “I amnow going to enter into the physical world. Assoon as I am born, you will take me out of thisprison-cell and take me to Nanda” (one of hisrelatives). His father saw Sri Krishna vividlybefore he came into the world ofmanifestation, and to everybody’s surprise, allof a sudden all the doors and gates of theprison were wide open, and his father tookhim to Nanda’s place. Here he started histeaching.

Before he came into the world, a similarincident occurred to the mother of the LordBuddha. Also Christianity practically says thesame, that Jesus entered into his mother’swomb consciously.

To come back to Sri Krishna, while he wasjust a child he opened his mouth and showedhis mother the whole universe. He wasteaching his mother that the universe isnowhere else but inside him.

Then, when he was eleven years old, oneday he observed that his parents and hisrelatives and neighbours were all performingceremonies in honour of the Lord Indra,Indra the rain God, King of the Gods. SriKrishna said, “Why are you worshippingIndra? It is better to worship this hill. Whydon’t you worship this Giri Govardhan? Ourcattle are being fed by this hill, and everyoneis being helped in one way or another by thishill. We should worship the hill and not Indra.Indra is not helping us in any way. If you wantto know the truth, then you worship this hill.”They listened to him on that occasion. Theyworshipped not Indra but the hill, and Indrabecame furious. He inundated the whole placewith water. There was a constant downpourwhich lasted seven days. But Sri Krishna wasnot to accept defeat. With one of his fingers helifted the whole hill, and the hill served thepurpose of an umbrella. The entire vicinitywas under the protection of the hill, and it isstill there. It is said that Sri Krishna held it forseven days and then Lord Indra felt that it wasuseless. Sri Krishna protected his whole raceand all his relatives. Then Lord Indra acceptedhis defeat.

Krishna was a cowherd and he had many, many friends. He was a very great flutist. Theboys and girls, especially the girls, used tocome to listen to his music. But the love hehad for them was always of the purest. He hadmany so-called girlfriends. We immediatelyassociate this term with the wrong emotion, but in Sri Krishna’s case, his relationship wasabsolutely pure. Among these girls, there wasone called Radha. Radha finally became hisconsort and his shakti, and it was she whounderstood fully who Sri Krishna was. ThereSri Krishna was expressing his Divine Love tohuman beings. It was delight that he wantedto express, pure delight, to this physical world. But criticism was existent in those days too.People started criticising Sri Krishna openlybecause of his fondness for Radha. Radhabecame very close to him. One day, Radha, in asulking mood, said to him, “Look, you are sopure and so divine and I come here to listen toyour music and you tell me eternal, divinetruths. How is it that people create suchgossip, especially my girlfriends? Just becauseyou give special attention to me they criticiseus.” Sri Krishna gave her a broad smile andsaid, “All right.” So one day Sri Krishnainvited all his girlfriends and told them,“Today I wish to have a special game. I knowall of you are pure and all of you are chaste. Most of you have husbands.” Then SriKrishna took a sieve and a bucket of water. Hetold them each to pour the water into thesieve, and if the water did not leak through, itmeant that that particular girl was pure andchaste. They started, one by one, to pourwater, and of course with the first one thewater leaked through. They all were laughing

and saying that she was not chaste or pure, and she buried her head in the fold of herarm. Then the next girl came and the samething happened, and on and on with each girl.

Radha was observing the scene. Sri Krishnasaid to her, “Radha, why are you silent, whydon’t you try?” She said, “They are alwayscriticising me, and if I try I will probably jointhem in their failure.” Sri Krishna said, “Whydon’t you come and try, it is a game after all.”So she came and poured the water, bucketafter bucket, but the sieve did not leak. Theywere all astonished and Sri Krishna said,“Look here, now you can see who is chaste, who is pure. Now I am teaching you theeternal truth. I am the Lord of the Universe.Radha comes to Me for spiritual help andEternal Truth, and My love for her and all ofyou is spiritual and divine. Some of you havehusbands, but your minds still roamelsewhere. You care for other men and yougive much attention to name, fame and duties. But in Radha’s case, I am always in her mind.Radha is a married woman, Radha has herown husband, but no matter where she goesand with whom she speaks, her mind isalways on Me. I am the Lord of the Universe, and whoever thinks of Me is the purest onearth. Those who think of other things are notpure.”

When he grew up in the society very oftenhe wished to give most illumining counsel.Everybody came to him for guidance and hewas their chief counsellor. When thePandavas became his most intimate friends,he used to advise them all the time in theirdifficulties; in all their sorrows and joys SriKrishna was there to advise them. Then hecame to the battlefield to help Arjuna. Wealready know from the Gita how he advisedArjuna to fight, and he taught Arjuna allabout the inner life, the spiritual life, innerperfection and outer perfection, realisationand revelation. Sri Krishna said, “Wheneverthere is decline of righteousness, andunrighteousness is in the ascendent, then I

body Myself forth to protect the virtuous andput an end to evil-doers; to establish Dharma,I am born from age to age.” This is one of themost important verses in the Gita.

Krishna, the widow and her cowSometimes when we are in utter difficulty,

the Grace of God acts in a very peculiar way.We feel that God becomes more cruel when weare in difficulties and sufferings. Let meillustrate this to you with a story. Sri Krishnaand Arjuna once were guests of a widow. Thewidow had no children, nobody. She was allalone. But she had a cow. This cow was heronly means of support. She used to sell milk, and by selling milk she used to maintain herlife. She was a great devotee of Sri Krishna. When Sri Krishna and Arjuna went to visither in disguise, incognito, she was so happy tosee these two divine guests. She fed them withwhatever she had in her house.

Sri Krishna was extremely pleased with hersurrendering attitude and her devotion. Ontheir way back, Arjuna said to Krishna, “Youwere so pleased with her. Why didn’t you

grant her a boon? Why didn’t you tell her thatshe would be prosperous soon, now that youare pleased with her? ”

“I have already granted her the boon thather cow must die tomorrow.”

“What? Her only means of support? She hasonly the cow, and nothing else. Without thecow how can she live on earth?”

Krishna answered, “You don’t understandme. She always thinks of the cow. The cow hasto be fed, has to milked, has to be bathed andso forth. I want her only to think of me, andwhen the cow is gone, she will think of me allthe time, twenty-four hours.

Then soon the time will be right for me totake her away from this world, and after a fewyears I will give her a better and morefulfilling incarnation. When she has nobodyon earth, not even the cow, she will try andspend all her time, day and night, in devotingherself to me. Otherwise, this way she willlinger on earth and constantly think of thecow and not of me.” So Sri Krishna’s ways areinscrutable.

In a letter to the Indian Weightlifting Federation andSanjita Chanu, IWF legal counsel Eva Nyirfa on Tuesdayinformed them of the ‘B’ sample also returning positive.

“You are required to inform us latest until 18 Septemberwhether the Athlete wishes to request a hearing before theIWF Hearing Panel,” Nyirfa wrote.

While Sanjita has agreed to appear for hearing to ‘proofher innocence,’ she has also requested IWF to provide thecomplete laboratory documentation package of her SampleB analysis. IWF said it has forwarded the request to thelaboratory.

The Manipur lifter, who failed an out of competition dopetest for anabolic steroid (testosterone) in November 2017prior to World Championship in Las Vegas in USA, wasprovisionally suspended and is now staring at a four yearsuspension if prove guilty during hearing.

Her A sample positive report came only on May 15, aftershe had participated in the Commonwealth Games in GoldCoast and won a gold medal in women’s 53kg category.

However, he had a change of heartamid speculation that he was forced toretire after his name was dropped fromthe 25-strong core group of nationalcampers announced by the Hockey IndiaWednesday.

Asked about the dropping from thecamp, Sardar evaded the question andsaid he would formally announce hisretirement during a press conference inthe national capital on 14 September.

Sardar made his senior debut for Indiaagainst Pakistan in 2006 and since thenhe has been a vital cog in the Indianteam's midfield.

The 32-year-old made over 350international appearances for India andcaptained the national team for eightlong years from 2008 to 2016 beforehanding the responsibility to PRSreejesh.

Sardar was also the youngest player tocaptain the Indian team when he led the

side at the 2008 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup.He received the Arjuna award in 2012 andPadma Shri in 2015.

Sardar has represented India in twoOlympics. Sardar will leave behind a richlegacy in the sport. A fighter to the core,he came back strongly after beingdropped from the Gold CoastCommonwealth Games squad. Heworked hard on his fitness to roar backinto the national team for the ChampionsTrophy, where India won a silver medal.

With age, he slowed down a bit butSardar still is considered as one of thefittest players in the Indian team.

"Fitness is not the reason behind my

decision. I am fit enough to play hockeyfor some more years. But there is alwaysa time for everything and I feel it's timefor me to move on in life," he said.

Sardar said he has conveyed hisdecision to chief coach Harendra Singh, adding he will continue to play hockey inthe domestic circuit.

Hailing from Sirsa in Haryana,Sardar's career was not devoid ofcontroversy either.

Shastri wants warm-up games before Australia seriesNEW DELHI (TIP): Their decision of not playing enough

warm-up games ahead of the England tour questioned,India’s head coach Ravi Shastri now says they have requestedthe BCCI to arrange for a couple of practice matches beforethe Austrtalia tour kicks off later this year.

Ahead of the five-Test series, which it lost 1-4 to England,India played just one warm-up game. Even the lone four-daypractice match against county side Essex was reduced tothree days amid high drama over the condition of the pitchand the outfield, both of which apparently left the visitorsunhappy.

On Thursday, Shastri said he was not averse to the idea ofplaying practice games.

“Absolutely not. Why would we be?. You can only see theresults (in the England Tests). Every time after the secondTest we have improved. You can still get better. But why can’twe be in that position in the first Test match?,” he was quotedas saying by ‘ESPNCricinfo’.

Shastri, though, was doubtful if practice games for the tourDown Under could be arranged due to a crammed schedule.

“If you have two or three games against weaker sides wedon’t mind because it is a game. But when you have aschedule as tight as this and when you have a memorandumof understanding that has already been formulated, with achoc-a-bloc calendar, there is very little you can do. Now, wehave requested for a couple of games in Australia before theTest series. But is there space (to play those matches)? That isthe question,” he wondered.

India captain Virat Kohli had defended their decision ofnot playing enough warm-up games, saying such matchesweren’t always useful as oppositions were often of poorquality and pitches not similar to to the ones prepared for theTest matches.

India’s Australia tour will start with a three-match T20Iseries, beginning November 21.

“Ideally we would want two three- or four-day games beforea Test series. But do you have the time? For example, we havea T20 series in Australia preceding the Test series. There is a10-day gap before the first Test. These are things that havebeen approved earlier. It is not in our control.” Source: PTI
