SWAN TRANSIT BUS SERVICES – 2021

Morning Bus Service – Southern Suburbs

Students may use route 527 departing Aubin Grove Station at 7:45 am arriving

Cockburn Station at 7:53 am approximately. Transfer to route 515 departing Cockburn

at 8:05 am arriving at Leeming High School at 8:14 am approximately.

Morning Bus Service – East & West

Students travelling from Bateman, Kardinya, Bibra Lake or any other surrounding

suburb can connect with the 515 at 8:05 am and 516 at 8:11 am from Murdoch Station.

These buses are normal - scheduled buses that deviate via Leeming SHS. They travel

down South Street, right into Findlay Road, right into Aulberry Parade and then left

into Ramsdale Loop. They arrive at school at 8:14 am (bus 515) and 8:18 am (bus

516) approximately.

Students travelling from the Canning Vale area who alight their bus at the corner of

South Street and Findlay Road, may connect with this bus at the first stop on Findlay

Road at 8:23 am approximately.

After school there are Five number 515 buses leaving LSHS

Bus One, Two and Three: Leaving at 2:58 pm and goes to Murdoch

Station arriving at 3:07 pm approximately. Students may transfer to

services to Canning Vale, Livingston, Kardinya, Fremantle etc.

Bus Four: Leaving at 2:58 pm and goes to Cockburn Central arriving at

3:23 pm approximately. Students may transfer to route 527 to Atwell and

Aubin Grove. This service goes along Farrington Road, Karel Avenue

and via Berrigan Drive to Cockburn Central.

Bus Five: Leaving at 3:32 pm approximately and goes to Murdoch

Station, arriving at 3:43 pm approximately. Travels to Murdoch Station

where students can transfer services to Canning Vale, Livingston,

Kardinya, Fremantle etc.

It is strongly recommended that parents check the Transperth website on a regular

basis to make sure that the times haven’t changed.

What to do if you ever feel threatened or unsafe on public transport

If available, ask a Transit Officer or Transperth staff member for help or just

stand near them for safety.

Call 9220 9999 – save this number in your mobile.

On a train, push the emergency button to speak to the driver.

On a bus, speak to the driver.

On a train station, push the emergency button on an information kiosk to speak

to our Central Monitoring Room.

On train stations, stay in well-lit areas in view of security cameras.

Other Safety Tips

If possible, have someone come to meet you, or tell friends or family when you

expect to be home.

On train stations, stand back from the yellow line on the edge of the platform.

When trains go past they create a powerful draft that can unbalance you.

Use only the proper access routes when you enter or exit train stations. Always

stay off train tracks. Walking across them is dangerous and illegal.

Preferred Devices & Supporting Systems

BYOD can be purchased from the preferred supplier or retailer of choice. JB Education offers bundle packages with educational prices through the Leeming Senior

High School portal. These devices have a commercial, 2-year warranty which provides

minimal time turnover when damaged. The Education warranty also includes accidental

damage. (Includes 2 broken screens).

Minimum specifications

Parents may choose any device for their child providing it meets the minimum specifications

to enable the best connection to our school network as indicated below:

Software: MS Office: MS Office 365 supplied for free by the Department of Education. Students can do this once they are at school. Year 7’s will be shown in Digital Literacy classes

Preferred if available:

Touch screen & Digital Pen enabled preferred to allow handwriting. (ie: Maths use on Education Perfect).

Only computers meeting the minimum specifications provided by the school will be able to be supported for connection to the school’s network. Whist at school, students must connect to the school’s network (this allows access to the Internet and other network facilities.)

2021 LEEMING SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL BYOD FAQs

Q: Why BYOD?

A: It is a technological trend in education to make learning more seamless and interactive both in the classroom and at home, where students bring their own device at school. At Leeming SHS, we envisage using technology to ensure students are engaged in a challenging curriculum that is focused on inquiry-based learning, developing critical thinking skills and focusing on hands-on learning for students to become competent 21st Century digital citizens.

Q: How does BYOD work at Leeming Senior High School?

A: Towards the middle of Term 1, Year 7 students become acquainted with using their device on the school network ready for use by week 5. Year 8-12 students are expected to bring their own computing device to school every day from the beginning of the year. Q: Does Leeming Senior High School have a preferred device?

A: Leeming Senior High School recommends a Surface Go or a Surface Pro 6 (Pro 4 or above). This model is a preferred device. If you have a technical background, there may be a different device you might chose. We ask that if you bring a device which is not our preferred device, you need to make sure it complies with our minimum specifications. Q: What are the minimum specifications required?

A: Operating System: Windows 10 Pro Software: MS Office – The Department of Education provides free installation of MS Office 365

for all students. At the start of the year, students will need to log onto their school e-mail, click

on the 365 icon and install it from there. There are instructions on how to do this on

Connect>Library>BYOD folder.

Preferred if Available

Touch Screen and Digital Pen Enabled (To allow handwriting, ie Maths use with Education

Perfect).

The school decided on the Surface Go and Pro 6 (Pro 4 or above) because of their light weight, the capacity to be used as a tablet or as a laptop with the attachable keyboard, and the fact that it is pen enabled. Having said that, and as noted above, a device meeting the Operating System and Software minimum specifications will also be accepted.

Q: Is there a recommended supplier?

A: JB Education is Leeming SHS’s preferred supplier for 2021. The Leeming SHS Portal has

a range of devices/prices that meet the minimum specifications required to connect to the

school network.

Orders can be made via the JB Education Leeming Senior High School Portal and the store

you wish to collect your device from can be selected.

JB Education has presented a range of devices/prices that all meet the minimum specifications

to enable connection to the school network.

Q: Can I buy my device from an alternative supplier?

A: You can choose to buy your device from any supplier as long as you ensure that the device

meets the minimum specifications and that the repair/replacement policy allows for a quick

turnaround should it be required.

Q: Why do I need Windows 10 Pro?

A: Devices need Windows 10 Pro for connectivity to the school network. If your device has

Windows Home, you can purchase an upgrade online.

Q: My child has a MacBook from primary school – is that ok?

A: Yes, MacBooks are able to be connected to the school network and they can also get the

free version of Office 365 once students have started school. However, please be aware that

there is limited functionality i.e.- some websites do not load properly and they do not have

touch screen.

Q: Who owns the device?

A: At all times the device is owned by the student/parents. It is recommended that parents

have access to the device and occasionally check the software, apps and other files saves on

the computer to ensure that they are legal, ethical and suitable for school.

Q: Does my child need to take the device to school every day?

A: Yes, it is part of the BYOD Agreement that all students bring their device to school every

day, fully charged from day 1. (Year 7 students will be directed by their Digital Literacy teacher

when to bring their device in to be set up – it is planned that this will be ready for students).

Q: Will my child use the device in every lesson?

A: No, there are some learning areas that will use the devices regularly whereas other areas

may not. Teachers are developing programs that incorporate the use of the technologies

available to enrich the learning experiences of the students.

Q: Is the digital pen necessary?

A: Electronic platforms used in the school require a digital pen and touch screen.

(ie Maths: Education Perfect)

Q: What are my child’s responsibilities when bringing the Notebooks/Tablets to school?

A: In agreeing to take part in this program, students are agreeing to use their device in an

ethical, legal and responsible manner at all times – i.e. at school and also at home.

Students and parents must ensure that:

The School Network & BYOD User Agreement is adhered to.

The ICT Policy of the School is adhered to. Students must at all times use their device

and the school network in a responsible manner. Normal school rules will apply to all

inappropriate behaviours and use.

They comply with all laws that apply to the internet, communications and copyright (e.g.

cyber bullying and plagiarism will not be tolerated).

Privacy and security (of the student and others) will be respected, unauthorised personal

information will not be shared and no attempt will be made to access personal

information of others.

Illegal copies of software, games, music files etc., are not installed/downloaded on the

device for use or sharing at school.

Q: What happens if my child’s device is damaged or lost at school?

A: The students and parents must accept full responsibility for the care and use of their own

device. In particular, Leeming SHS does not accept responsibility for theft or loss of the device

(in parts or whole) or any accessories. It is recommended that families check the details of their

personal insurance coverage for events of loss or damage to the computer. JB Education offers

an Education warranty that includes accidental damage. (including 2 broken screens)

Technical support is not provided for hardware or software problems that may occur with the devices (this could void your warranty). Such assistance remains the personal responsibility of the student as a private matter.

Q: Does the school help the kids with their devices?

A: To enable the efficient and effective use of the BYOD scheme during school hours, students

are given access to the school network. Students will be trained and given supporting

documentation on how to access school network facilities. (Library).

Q: How do students connect to the school network?

A: Upon enrolment, families will have handed in signed Learning Technologies Usage

Agreement & Student Parent Memorandum of Understanding.

Year 7 students will learn how to use their device and how to connect it to the school network

during Digital Literacy & Inquiry Skills lessons in Term 1.

System Administrators are available at lunch time in the Library on Monday, Wednesday and Friday (all year) to assist students with their device issues and connection to the school network. Technical support will only be available during normal school hours to assist with network issues. If a student is experiencing a connection problem with their device, it must be reported to the Library immediately.

Our system relies on orders for a particular day being collected on

that day. If you must go home unexpectedly for sickness, a note

from the nurse or front office entitles you to a refund when you are back

at school and return the token. If you notify the canteen and return the token before going home, you will

receive an immediate refund.

2021 CONTRIBUTIONS AND CHARGES

Please make payment between Wednesday 27 January 2021 and Friday 24 September 2021

(Office hours 8.30am – 3.30pm) Contributions and charges enable the school to enrich the basic Curriculum. Students will derive the full benefit from the Voluntary Contributions and Compulsory Charges they pay. Failure to pay your contributions and charges places a large burden on the school community. The school relies upon all families to contribute. School Charges and Voluntary Contributions can be settled by any of the following methods:

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TOWARDS PAYMENT OF CONTRIBUTIONS AND CHARGES SECONDARY ASSISTANCE SCHEME – (Note: New applications need to be made each year). The Department of Education provides an allowance to parents/guardians who are holders of the following:

• Centrelink Family Health Care Card • Centrelink Pensioner Concession Card • Veterans’ Affairs Pensioner Concession Card (only the blue annual Veterans’ Affair Card

is eligible) The allowance is paid up to and including the year the student turns 18 years of age. The allowance consists of two components:

• $115.00 Clothing Allowance paid directly to the parent/guardian or the school. • $235.00 Educational Program Allowance paid directly to the school.

PLEASE NOTE that a new application needs to be made each year. To apply for the Secondary Assistance Scheme please come to the School’s Finance Office before 9 April 2021. No late application will be accepted by the Department of Education. The forms need to be completed online at the school with the parent or carer present. VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS FOR YEAR 7 TO 10 Schools are required to make sure that all students can choose an educational program that satisfies the requirements of the Curriculum. The Department of Education policy states that the maximum Voluntary Contributions that can be requested is $235.00. If the Secondary Assistance Scheme is claimed, it pays for the student’s Voluntary Contributions. These are contributions to core subjects and some electives. VOLUNTARY APPROVED REQUESTS TECHNOLOGY and CURRICULUM IT Leeming Senior High School has computers, notebooks and associated printers for the students to use and these are connected to the Internet via the school’s network. Students have access to email, internet and international learning communities. We have purchased a range of software packages to meet the individual learning needs of our students. Your $25.00 contribution enables us to continue the growth of this wonderful, but rapidly changing learning tool and provides funds to upgrade and obtain licenses for Software packages. LIBRARY The Library request of $35.00 assists in the purchase and provision of resources supportive of the implementation of the school plan (Literacy). These include:

• Fiction and non-fiction print and electronic resources to promote literacy and encourage recreational reading, reading for a purpose, plus the implementation of research skills supportive of all learning areas.

• Resources include - subject texts, books, online encyclopedias, newspapers, magazine subscriptions, iPads, Apps, e-Book readers, e-Books, A/V equipment, etc.

PARENT AND CITIZEN ASSOCATION & P&C BUILDING FUND AND CONTRIBUTIONS This is a parent committee that decides on the distribution of funds collected based on current information provided by our school. The P&C Building Fund allocates funding to requested school upgrades. Please refer to the P&C letter from the Parent Resources section on our website. CHAPLAIN – STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES The School Chaplain is an integral member of the Student Service team at Leeming SHS and a $15.00 donation helps provide the necessary services. The Chaplain provides holistic pastoral care, mentoring, teaching on emotional intelligence and relational issues, welfare support and cultivates a greater connectedness to various support agencies and community organisations. Additionally, the Chaplain encourages the school to have an outward humanitarian focus by supporting various projects. HOUSE AND CARNIVAL EVENTS $10.00 is provided to cover any Sporting Carnivals and events held at the school.

PUBLICATIONS The school uses a number of publishing platforms to communicate with parents such as.

To cover the costs associated with all publications we ask parents a contribution of $8.00 per year. OTHER OPTIONAL COSTS PAPER USE Once students have used an initial $5.00 paper allocation that is credited to them, they can purchase additional printing credit at the Library. If your child is doing subjects that are in Computing, Business Education, English or HASS there may be a higher usage of printing paper than other subjects. YEARBOOK - SURVEYOR This is a record of events and achievements for the year and is a great keepsake for your student. The cost is $25.00 and must be paid by 29 October 2021. Past years copies of the Surveyor can be viewed at the School Reception. This item is provided by an outside source. VALEDICTORY – Year 12 Only The Valedictory ceremony is a formal conclusion to the Year 12 course and each student’s journey through High School. The location of the ceremony will be determined at the start of 2021. The $100 fee for the Valedictory Ceremony (included in the Year 12 School Fees) covers venue hire, full ceremony gown hire, a school sash (for the students to keep) and a Class of 2021 photo for each student The costs for the Valedictory tickets are paid separately from the school fees. Early in Term 4, we send our parents and guardians an e-mail containing information on the Valedictory and how to purchase a ticket and the cost.

SCHOOL BALL – YEAR 12 ONLY The School Ball is invoiced and paid during Year 11 and it is held in Term 1 of Year 12. PAYMENTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS FAQs

Q: If you call some charges ‘Voluntary’, why should I pay? A: As per the Department of Education guidelines students are entitled to participate in an educational program that satisfies the requirements of the Western Australian Curriculum and Assessment Outline. The Department of Education allocates basic funding to each school according to the number of students and gives Principals and School Boards the autonomy to increase resources to their core subjects and some elective subjects.

The School Education Act 1999, School Education Regulations 2000 and Department policies establish that schools can request up to $235 in Voluntary Contributions. Our School Board and Principal have agreed to request parents to pay Voluntary Contributions as these extra funds allow us to provide critical additional educational resources in our core subjects and some elective subjects. Every cent is allocated to the invoiced School Year and is used on that year so that it benefits your child directly.

Although its name seems to indicate they are inconsequential fees, the Voluntary Contributions allow our teaching staff to enrich their programs with what we believe are vital educational resources for the classroom.

Q: What’s the difference between Voluntary Contributions and Voluntary Approved Requests? A: Voluntary Contributions are allocated to resources requested by the teaching staff for their classroom.

A: Voluntary Approved Requests are costs that the School Board has deemed necessary to keep the school in good standing and condition. In past years Voluntary Approved Contributions have helped the school purchase items such as:

• Lockers • Bush shelter • Library shelves • Furniture in brand new Media Room • Year 7 Area with table-tennis table and Barbecue • Professional coffee machine to allow our students to work towards a Barista Certificate • Software packages for a range of subjects

ELEVATE PROGRAM

A Study Skills program run by Elevate Education for our Year 11 and Year 12 students. The students will attend workshops through the year with the vision to create lasting cultural change in the way they approach study. Through the workshops students will learn study techniques and will be provided a road-map for the year.

The Elevate Program is presented by young and energetic presenters and offers practical skills based on 14 years of research.

The Leeming Senior High School teachers will receive easy-to-use implementation kits to use within the classroom after every workshop.

Parents and teachers will also be invited to a workshop to reinforce best practices both in the home and in the classroom. To cover the costs of this program each student is asked to pay a fee of $18.50.

GENERAL ASSISTANCE SCHEME The Western Australian Department of Education provides an allowance to assist eligible families with secondary schooling costs. To be eligible for the allowance the parent/guardian must hold a Department of Human Services (Centrelink) or Veteran’s Affairs card that represents a statement of income for the family. CERTIFICATE II PAYMENTS In accordance with the Department of Education Contributions and Charges policy (Section 99 of the School Education Act 1999), Leeming Senior High School requests a 50% payment for each and every Certificate II qualification that students enrol in for Year 11 and Year 12 at Leeming Senior High School. Student participation is conditional to this payment. Parents/Guardians are advised of this payment requirement through a note on their payment statement. DIRECT DEBIT REQUEST SERVICE AGREEMENT

This is your Direct Debit Service Agreement with Leeming Senior High School,APCA ID 504-843 and ABN 71 790 424 539. It

explains what your obligations are when undertaking a Direct Debit arrangement with us. It also details what our obligations are to you as your Direct Debit provider.

Please keep this agreement for future reference. It forms part of the terms and conditions of your Direct Debit Request (DDR) and should be read in conjunction with your DDR authorisation.

Definitions account means the account held at your financial institution from which we are authorised to arrange

for funds to be debited.

agreement means this Direct Debit Request Service Agreement between you and us.

banking day means a day other than a Saturday or a Sunday or a public holiday listed throughout Australia.

debit day means the day that payment by you to us is due.

debit payment means a particular transaction where a debit is made.

direct debit request means the Direct Debit Request between us and you.

us or we means Leeming Senior High School, (the Debit User) you have authorised by requesting a

Direct Debit Request.

you means the customer who has signed or authorised by other means the Direct Debit Request.

your financial institution means the financial institution nominated by you on the DDR at which the account is maintained.

1. Debiting your account

1.1 By signing a Direct Debit Request or by providing us with a valid instruction, you have authorised us to arrange for funds to be debited from your account. You should refer to the Direct Debit Request and this agreement for the terms of the arrangement between us and you.

1.2 We will only arrange for funds to be debited from your account as authorised in the Direct Debit Request.

We will only arrange for funds to be debited from your account if we have sent to the address nominated by you in the Direct Debit Request, a billing advice which specifies the amount payable by you to us and when it is due.

1.3 If the debit day falls on a day that is not a banking day, we may direct your financial institution to debit your account on the following banking day. If you are unsure about which day your account has or will be debited you should ask your financial institution.

2. Amendments by us 2.1 We may vary any details of this agreement or a Direct Debit Request at any time by giving you at least fourteen (14) days written notice.

3. Amendments by you 3.1 You may change*, stop or defer a debit payment, or terminate (cancel) this agreement at any time by providing us with at least 14 days notification by writing to:

4. Your obligations 4.1 It is your responsibility to ensure that there are sufficient clear funds available in your account to allow a debit payment to be made in accordance with the Direct Debit Request.

4.2 If there are insufficient clear funds in your account to meet a debit payment:

a) you may be charged a fee and/or interest by your financial institution;

b) you may also incur fees or charges imposed or incurred by us; and

c) you must arrange for the debit payment to be made by another method or arrange for sufficient clear funds to be in your account by an agreed time so that we can process the debit payment.

4.3 You should check your account statement to verify that the amounts debited from your account are correct.

5. Disputes 5.1 If you believe there has been an error in debiting your account, you should notify us directly on Leeming Senior High School and confirm that notice in writing with us as soon as possible so

that we can resolve your query more quickly. Alternatively you can take it up directly with your financial institution.

5.2 If we conclude as a result of our investigations that your account has been incorrectly debited we will respond to your query by arranging for your financial institution to adjust your account (including interest and charges) accordingly. We will also notify you in writing of the amount by which your account has been adjusted.

5.3 If we conclude as a result of our investigations that your account has not been incorrectly debited we will respond to your query by providing you with reasons and any evidence for this finding in writing.

6. Accounts You should check:

a) with your financial institution whether direct debiting is available from your account as direct debiting is not available through BECS on all accounts offered by financial institutions.

b) your account details which you have provided to us are correct by checking them against a recent account statement; and

c) with your financial institution before completing the Direct Debit Request if you have any queries about how to complete the Direct Debit Request.

7. Confidentiality 7.1 We will keep any information (including your account details) in your Direct Debit Request confidential. We will make reasonable efforts to keep any such information that we have about you secure and to ensure that any of our employees or agents who have access to information about you do not make any unauthorised use, modification, reproduction or disclosure of that

information.

7.2 We will only disclose information that we have about you:

a) to the extent specifically required by law; or

b) for the purposes of this agreement (including disclosing information in connection with any

query or claim).

8. Notice 8.1 If you wish to notify us in writing about anything relating to this agreement, you should write to:

8.2 We may send notices either electronically to your email address or by ordinary post to the address you have given us.

Welcome to Leeming Senior High School.

Our school has a proud history of promoting harmony among the students whilst encouraging and

supporting every student to reach their own level of educational excellence. One way in which the

parents and carers of all students can promote the strong community beliefs of the school is through

joining the P&C.

The Leeming Senior High School P&C perform two main roles within the school:

Providing a forum for all parents to communicate directly with the School and to enable each

family to make a positive contribution to the educational opportunities available to all students.

Fund raising activities to support activities throughout the school.

Your involvement in the P&C can ensure that your child is represented in vital decisions made by the

P&C as well as providing you with an opportunity to meet other parents.

Historically the P&C has decided against running major fundraising activities, fetes or raffles during the

school year to minimise the time commitment required by members of the P&C. This results in the P&C

relying entirely on raising funds through:

Voluntary P&C Contribution of $35 per student.

Tax-deductible donation of $35 to the P&C Building Fund – used to upgrade school facilities

for the benefit of all students.

Operating the school canteen and uniform and second-hand shop.

How can you help?

Join the P&C – we need members!! Without members, we cannot operate!!

Attend the meetings – ensure diversity in the group

Volunteer in the canteen and uniform shop – minimises operating costs and increases the

funds remaining for the school.

When are the meetings in 2021?

Wednesday evenings of Week 3 and Week 8 of each term at 7.00 pm in the staff room with the

exception of Term 1 when we will only meet on Week 8. The first meeting of the year (Wednesday

24 March) is the AGM at which all office bearer positions become available and are open for nomination.

We encourage you to nominate for a position at the 2021 AGM.

Can you help? Critical Call for Volunteers

The P&C operates the canteen and uniform/bookshop (including second hand sales) as services to the

school community. We employ staff but rely on the support of volunteers to function effectively. Any

surplus funds are used to provide additional school resources.

For many years the P&C has successfully funded many projects around the school and our students

have directly benefitted from the money raised through the Canteen and the Uniform Shop as well as

the numerous donations to the P&C Building Fund and the Leeming Senior High School P&C

Association. With the increasingly busy lives of our all parents the P&C has been struggling to secure

the assistance of parents/guardians in recent years. Please do not be discouraged by the amount of

work involved as we are willing to put supports in place to make your role easier.

The role of a Volunteer at the P&C in High School is very different to that of a P&C in Primary School.

There is not fundraising to organise or people to chase. We are here to maximise the benefits to the

School Community from the funds we receive via the Canteen and the Uniform Shop.

It is very rewarding to see the benefits spread around the school and a daunting thought to imagine

Leeming Senior High School without a P&C.

Canteen

The canteen requires the assistance of volunteers daily to help it provide the best service to our

customers. A volunteer’s duties usually involve preparing and serving food to students. Do not be put

off by thought of serving a mob of teenagers – we will try to make this as easy as possible and the

students will help you out!

Training is provided. Disposable hats and gloves will be supplied to satisfy hygiene requirements for

food preparation. We also provide lunch, a hot drink and good company. It’s also an opportunity to see

the school in action.

Volunteers are required between 10.15 am and 1.45 pm. The Canteen Coordinator, Debbie Bowie, will

develop a roster that considers your personal schedules. Even if you can only help once a term it would

be a tremendous help so why not give it a go!

Absences

If a student is going to be absent from school, please contact the school office by telephoning

9237 6860 or sending an SMS to 0408 956 958 with the Students Name, Year Group and

reason for absence before 9.00am. The student should bring a note or doctor’s certificate

to the Student Services Reception on return to school for extended absences.

Illness during the Day

Students who are ill during the day should inform their classroom teacher or report to the

Nurse or Student Services. The School Nurse works 4 days per week. If the student needs

to leave the school and return home, the Nurse will contact parent/caregiver then send to

Student Services to be signed out. Please observe the protocol by following these

instructions. Students should not contact their parent/caregiver prior to speaking with

school staff and no student is to leave the premises without the appropriate leave pass.

Please keep your child home if they are unwell.

Lateness

Students who are late for school must sign in either and provide a note or ensure their

Parent has called in with information explaining their lateness at the Student Services

Reception. Unexplained lateness will result in detention.

Uniform Pass

Students not in uniform are required to report to Student Services to obtain a “Uniform Pass”

before the school day begins. They must provide a written reason from their parent/caregiver

as to why they are out of uniform. Unexplained uniform violations will result in detention.

Leaving School Grounds

Any student who is required to attend an appointment out of the school must bring a

permission note from their parent/guardian outlining the reason for the appointment. Once

this information is given to Student Services the student will be issued with a “School Leave

Pass” which they must retain. No student is to leave the school grounds without the

appropriate approval.

Bikes

Students who ride bicycles or scooters to and from school must park and lock them in the

bicycle racks located behind the Library/Uniform Shop. Students need to provide their own

lock.

Communication Guide

In a large school, the need for effective communication is paramount. The school takes

every opportunity to communicate to members of our school community in a number of

ways, including text, Connect, email, letters, website updates and the newsletter. Connect

is the primary communication medium.

School Calendar

A comprehensive calendar is available to parents and students early in Term 1 on the school

website. It contains the dates of significant events to be held during the term/year. School

excursions, exam dates, report distribution dates, school development days, staff meetings

and parent/teacher evenings are just some of the dates recorded. Please note that some

dates might have to change as the year progresses, so check our website regularly.

Specific purpose Notices – SMS or e-mails

These are issued occasionally to inform and remind parents about specific events such as

school photos, vaccinations or parent evenings.

Assemblies

Whole-school assemblies are held once a term in the Recreation Centre. Parents are invited

to attend the award assemblies. The dates for the assemblies are published on the school

calendar which can be located on the school website. Year House Group assemblies are

held once a week during House Group time.

Newsletters

School newsletters are distributed to parents via an email twice a term. The newsletters

contain details of school activities, significant dates and other aspects of school life.

Daily Notices

Information for students is provided every day in the daily notices. These notices are read

to students during House Group after recess. Sporting team notices, special upcoming

events, and general information are just some of the information regularly included in the

notices.

Student Diary

Every student is expected to use a diary. This is used to record homework, and plan

assignment completion but may also be used by teachers and parents to communicate with

each other.

Contact with Teachers

If you wish to make an appointment please contact the teacher directly, by telephone or e-

mail. Teachers e-mail addresses can be found on the website –Our School-Staff. We

encourage all parents to keep in regular contact with the school. When parents contact the

school, it is quite possible that the staff member that you wish to speak with is teaching. In

light of this, please do not expect immediate responses from Teachers. The staff member

will ring you back at their earliest opportunity.

Appointments for Student Services

Many students make appointments to see members of the Student Services Team. The

procedure is simple:

Students attend the Student Services building at recess or lunchtime.

Make an appointment time.

Show the appointment time to the relevant subject teacher.

As a matter of courtesy, appointments should be negotiated with the subject teacher to make

sure that essential teaching or tests do not clash with the appointment.

Students sign in at the Kiosk in Student Services to register their attendance.

Reports

Reports will be e-mailed and published on connect. Students in all years will receive a report

at the end of each semester. (Semester 1 and Semester 2).

Downloads

The school produces a number of brochures, including handbooks on course selection and

the BYOD Policy. These publications are now located on the school website and can be

downloaded.

Local Media

The local paper will often contain details and pictures of special events held at the school.

Success of our students in sport, academic achievements and community involvement is

also submitted to the local media for publication.

Maintenance of Information

It is important that the school be notified promptly of any change of circumstance including

address, phone number, including mobile phone number, email address, living

arrangements and medical information. Up to date information contributes to effective

communication.

Messages to Students

Parents are requested not to ask the office staff to pass messages to students, unless they

are of an urgent and serious nature.

arrives at school and are to be kept out of sight until the end of the school day –

including before school and at break times

Health and Safety

Accident Insurance

The school recommends that students be covered by a 24-hour Personal Accident

Insurance policy, including ambulance cover. Schools do not cover these costs should an

ambulance be required.

Drugs

All WA High Schools have a zero-tolerance policy on drugs in school. This definition includes

alcohol and tobacco. Breaches are serious and will be dealt with according to the DOE

policies. Students are permitted to carry “one day, one dose” of medication such as

antibiotics or analgesia.

Immunisation

At times through Commonwealth or State Government initiatives immunisation may take

place within the school for your child. You will be kept informed through the health

Department and Leeming SHS when these programs arise. A photocopy of the student’s

immunisation should be attached to the health record card where possible.

A Measles Exclusion policy exists which states that if a child is not immunised

against measles and if a case occurs, then the non-immunised child can be excluded

from school for 14 days unless immunised within 72 hours of contact with the patient.

If there are no immunisation records the school assumes your child has not been

immunised.

Skin Care

Students are encouraged to care for their skin by wearing appropriate clothing (including

hats) and using sunscreen when out in the sun. Appropriate sunglasses should be worn.

Hats or caps should be worn outside but should not be worn inside buildings. Daily

application of sunscreen is a worthwhile, lifetime habit.

Security

Loss of clothes, bags, pens and pencils, books, files and other small items is a problem in

all schools. It is essential that all personal property be clearly labelled with the owner’s name.

This applies particularly to bags, many of which are otherwise identical and may be taken

by mistake. In general:

Valuables including mobile phones and similar electronic devices are the

responsibility of the student.

Mobile phones and other valuables must be kept with the student at all times. If

parents deem it essential for a student to carry a mobile phone for safety reasons,

mobile phones must be tuned off during class time.

If it is unavoidable that a student has a large sum of money at school, it should be

given to a teacher or the Front Office Finance Department for safe keeping for the

day.

Lockers are available and all students wishing to have a locker should see their Year

Coordinator/Student Services.

The school accepts no responsibility for loss, theft or damage to students’ property as

the Education Department of Western Australia does not provide insurance cover.

Leeming SHS Library & SmartRider Card

In 2021, all new students will be issued with a new plastic library card. One side has

the student’s name, photo and date of birth to be used for borrowing resources from

the Library and also for identification. The other side is their SmartRider for public

transport through TransPerth.

If students don’t need to use the SmartRider, then they simply use the Library card.

When they need to use the SmartRider, they can put money onto it at train/bus

stations, phone or online.

If a student loses their card, they will need to apply at the Library for a replacement.

($5 replacement cost)

2021

All new students will receive a Library-SmartRider card at the beginning of the school

Year (2021).

Students will have a photo taken during their Orientation visit in 2020 or in their first

few days at Leeming SHS. (New students will be called up to the Library).

Year 7 students who currently use a SmartRider card will have their photo taken

during transition however; it will be held until the beginning of the school year to be

sent through to TransPerth.

This will allow students to continue using their SmartRider cards until the beginning

of the school year when their new Library-SmartRider card will become current.
