Positives

If built into student presentations, students appreciate the resource

this offers them for their final research papers (especially if the finalresearch papers are built around core texts)

The resource grows over time, providing an archive of studentinformation for courses

The resource also connects the class to the world

Received requests for more information for students in other partsof the world



Negatives

Students are overwhelmed by Zotero¶s functionality

Occasional problems with the µsync¶ function; meaning problemsbecause their annotated bibliographies don¶t get submitted on time

Student resistance to learning new technology

Students do not want to search Zotero forums for troubleshooting

A lot of administrative and troubleshooting work on the part of theinstructor

Positives

Positives:

Introduces students to the responsibility of scholarship when thematerial is available to a global audience

Creates an archive of research for other researchers and futurestudent researchers

Independent study students are generally more motivated and thuscomplain less about the technology (they know what they aregetting into)



Ultimately

Zotero is a great tool for teaching, BUT

Requires a lot of faculty oversight without support from computer services department, and if students are previously untrained in thesoftware

Better for smaller projects (and for only a few students)



Zotero alternatives

Mendeley--social sciences/hard sciences. ³ITunes for your journal articles´



In the future...

Possible collaborations with differentclasses/different institutions

Share same core text, but differentresearch

Promotes cross-institution collaboration
