The Installation of a Fibre Zone Distribution Box must be carried out with care and precision. Make shure towork on a clean and level work surface.

In the package following items are included:

1 Zone Distribution Box2 small bolts 1 Nut to fix splicetrays on the fixed bolt

All other products must be purchased seperatly, the product numbers are mentioned where needed.

Phase 1 Preparation of the Zone Distribution Box

Leave some extra cable (± 5m) at different places on the cable link. This makes it easier to repair in case ofa broken cable.

A minimum of 3 meters OF cable should be foreseen at the ZDBox side the as this will facilitate thetermination of the cable in the OF ZDBox. Preferably do the termination of the OF in the ZDBox on a tablebefore screwing the ZDbox into it’s final place.

Always cut the first meter of cable as this part can be damaged after pulling the cable, bending, waterdamage...

More specific installation guidelines on indoor optical fibre cable can be obtained from our “Optical Fibre Indoor Cable INSTALLATION GUIDE” which is available from our NCS website.

Remove the top cover.

Fixation of the ZDBox can bedone with four optional screws.Special holes are foreseen inevery corner. The advantage of the Snap-inZDBox is the flexibility to acceptdifferent types of couplers andconnectors. Four versions can beinstalled by using the LANmarksnap-in® couplers. Thesecouplers must be purchasedseperatly. Available couplers are: DSC,SC, 2LC and MT-RJPlease be aware that patchcordswith a DSC connector are notcompatible with two separate SCcouplers. The orientation of thekey member is different. Please consult the list below.

First remove the protective caps on the front of thecouplers. Snap the couplers into the ZDBox byhooking the top of the coupler under the frontmounting plate and then lowering the coupler intoits aperture.! Make sure to keep the protective caps in place onthe back of the couplers during installation to avoidingress of dust. Do not remove the shutters.

To remove the coupler: put a small screwdriverunder the connector in the opening to unlock.

Phase 3 Fibre termination

Phase 3A Direct connectorisation

Two termination practices are supported depending the used construction of your fibre cable.

In case of loose tube construction we advice to fusion splice to pigtails using a splice tray for protection. Dueto the fragile nature of the 250µm fibre we advice not to use direct connectorisation a special microtube(N890.045) must be used to protect the fibre when direct termination is chosen.

In case of tight buffer constructions both fusion splicing with pigtails and connectorisation are possible.Following table may help you choose the preferred method.

Remove 1 meter of the outer sheath andthe aramid/glass yarns from the cable.Consult specific guidelines on removingthe outer jacket depending theconstruction.Avoid damaging the fibres while cuttingthe outer jacket and yarns. For 250µ fibres the tube must beremoved leaving at least two loops in theZDBox. Make sure to clean the fibreswith De-Solv-It to remove the gel.

You must use an optional cablegland (PG-16) to bring in thefibre cable at the back. Fix apermanent label on the fibrecable for future identification.Make sure the cable is fixed inthe cable gland.Provide at least two spare loopsin the ZDBox.Measure the length of eachfibre to the coupler respectingboth bending radius and thecolor order and cut the rest ofthe fibre.Take the fibres out of the ZDBoxand mount the connectors onthe fibres. When mountingconnectors on 250 µ fibre youwill need to use an optionalmicrotube (N890.045) toreduce risk of damaging thefibre. It is advisable to label thefibres for easy identification.Remove the dust protection capson backside of the couplerswhere connectors will beinserted.A quick cleanness check of thecouplers may be advisable.Compressed air or alcohol canbe used to clean the couplers ifthere is ingress of dust. Loop thefibres back in the ZDBox andinsert while respecting thecolour coding the mountedconnectors in the couplers. Thefibres can be held together withtie wraps. The “Recommendations tomaintain duplex OF channelpolarity” technical paper, whichis available from our NCSwebsite, should be consideredwhen choosing the colour order.

In case of tight buffer fibre:Un-strip the fibre cable to alength of at least 1 meter toallow enough spare fibre forlater maintenance purposes.Consult specific guidelines onremoving the outer jacketdepending the construction.Avoid damage to the fibreswhile cutting the outer jacket andyarns.

In case of loose tube fibre:Remove 1 meter of outer sheathfrom the tube.Use the correct tools in order notto damage the fibres whilecutting the tube. An optionalcable gland (PG-16) has to beused to affix the cable to theZDBox.Fix a permanent label on thefibre cable for futureidentification.

Up to 2 splice trays may be installedto hold up to 24 fibre splices.Splicetrays for fibre splice protectionsare available in metallic or heat-shrink versions. It is advisable toinstall a maximum of 12 spliceprotections per tray. Fix the firstsplicetray over the bolt in the ZDBoxwith the nut.Remove the tube from the fibre overa length to allow fixation in thesplicetray (A) by means of tie wraps.Clean the fibres with De-Solv-it toremove the gel. Make sure to haveat least two loops of loose fibres inthe splicetray. Up to twelve fibrescan be installed using a heat shrinkor a metallic protection splicetray. Incase of using a fibre cable with morethan 12 250µm fibres separation ofextra fibres is needed. This can onlybe done by splitting the fibres withan optional Y- Splitter moduleN890.144 (C) + 2 lengths of emptytube for splicetrays N890.145 toinsert the fibres for protection.Remove the dustcaps from thecouplers on the inside of the ZDBox.A quick cleanness check of thecouplers may be advisable.Compressed air or alcohol can beused to clean the couplers if there isingress of dust. Insert the connectorsof the pigtails in the couplers.Measure the length of the 900µbuffer needed to fix the pigtail in thecomb (B) of the splicetray keeping inmind a minimum bending radius. Thefibres from the pigtails should makeat least two loops in the oppositedirection. Our Maxi strip® pigtailsallow to remove the 900µ buffer inone go after being cut at the rightlength.Cut the first 12 fibres to the rightlength and joint them by fusionsplicing with pigtails respecting thecolour sequence. The “Recommendations to maintainduplex OF channel polarity”technical paper, which is availablefrom our NCS website, should beconsidered when choosing the colourorder.

Up to 2 splice trays can be installed if needed. Don’t forget to labelthe pigtails.Close the splice tray with the cover and fix with the nut.

Protect the splices with a metallicN890.003 or a heat shrinksplice protector N890.021.Fixate the splice protector intothe correct splicetray at thedesignated place and gentlyloop the fibres back in the splicetray. For splicetray with metallic spliceprotection use N890.010For splicetray with heat shrinkprotection use N890.020For splicetray cover useN890.022After installation of the firstsplicetray you may insert theother fibres from the same cablein the empty tube and fix thetube to the second splicetray andfusion splice the left over fibres.

The ZDBox can now be gentlyclosed, fix the top lid with the 2small bolts on the sides andthen install the ZDBox in thedesignated place by means ofscrews if not already done.Loop the extra fibre cable backin a safe place while respectingminimum bending radius.

Label the ports conform thecompany policy.

The ZDBox is now installed.

Do not remove the shutters onthe front of the ZDBox becausethey prevent ingress of dirt inthe couplers. Patchcables canbe connected easily just byopening the shutters at the front.

The ZDBox also has a bolt atthe back if connection to theearth is requested
