AfTER 60 yEARs60 years after Bern 1954, Switzerland will host another edition of the European Athletics Championships. zürich 2014 will represent a once-in-a-lifetime experience for everyone in-volved. Swiss athletes in particular will be excited to compete in front of their home crowd.
Zürich 2014 will be the 22nd edition of the European Athletics Championships; the first edition was held in Turin in 1934.
Bern 1954 was a huge success. The organisers, who had expected 10 000 to 15,000 stadium spectators, installed temporary tribunes at short notice to accommodate 24,000 fans.
The performances of Emil Zatopek and Roger Bannister were two of the highlights of the championships in Berne. The best Swiss athletes were Jean-Jacques Hegg (400 m) and Fritz Portmann (triple jump) who both placed fifth in their finals.
«The European Athletics Championships in Bern felt like some sophisticated school reunion. We were a great group. Even though I got elimi-nated in the heats, I cherish many wonderful memories of Bern 1954. Seeing roger Bannister win! or watching zatopek during his 10’000 m solo run! Just phenomenal! Athletics has always been very important to me and still is!»

Cooly – A mAsCoT IConzürich 2014 is proud to have a very special ambassador: Cool cow Cooly - a crowd favourite, wherever and whe-never it appears. The happy, sometimes slightly overexcited Swiss cow fascinates both fans and athletes. Just as the future competitors, Cooly takes its preparation for the championships seriously, and will no doubt be ready to team up with spectators to support the competitors.
Cooly has met many stars in its capacity as Zürich 2014 ambassador. It danced with Haile Gebrselassie at the Grand Prix in Berne, celebrated
athletics with usain Bolt at Weltklasse Zürich, and joined Victor Röthlin when he crossed the finish line at the Jungfrau-Marathon.
As a popular championship ambassador, Cooly has quite a busy schedule with more than 150 appearances in Switzerland and in neighbouring countries.

the vitAl components of A lAsting Zürich 2014 successSwiss Starters 2014: potential members for the Swiss national team for zürich 2014 have been supported in a special project called Swiss Starters 2014 since 2008. And the project is prospering: As many as 35 Swiss athletes have achieved the qualify-ing standard for the championships so far. The initial goal of a team of 30 athletes will most probably exceed all expectations.
2014 Swiss national championships in Frauenfeld: The zürich 2014 organisers and the LC Frauenfeld will stage a very special edition of the Swiss national champion-ships in 2014. Both championship qualifiers and hundreds of Swiss athletes will get the chance to experience a unique competiti-on in European championship atmosphere.

the UBS Kids Cup Team – is designed as a team event and draws more than 12,000 participants at 18 local qualifying events, six regional final events, and one Swiss national final event.
Training with the stars: At the IAAF Dia-mond League meetings Weltklasse zürich and Athletissima Lausanne, the superstars of athletics do not only compete, they also always make time for special training ses-sions with kids at 15 various locations in all regions of the country. more than 2,000 children meet up with national and inter-national stars to train. A unique experience for both the young athletes and their illus-trious coaches.
Integration of running community: Not just Swiss clubs and track officials will be integrated when it comes to volunteering. The national running community will play an equally important role. many Swiss run-ning events are investors of the European Athletics Championships, and will be on duty along the race courses of the mara-thons and race walking events.
