Reaching OutIt's a tough time in Israel, tougher perhaps than most South Africans remember. The birth of themodern Jewish State in 1948 was a traumatic period, but the hardships then were of an entirely differentn a t u r e .

It's tough but we're going to pull through. Individually and collectively, we shall emerge from thecurrent lean period once a semblance of stability has settled, displacing the heady spendthrift days of therecent past.

It is disconcerting and disturbing to hear at every turn negative forecasts, gloomy prognostications andself-pitying prophets of doom. People enmeshed in such a web soon ensnare others, and it quicklybecomes a destructive situation — destructive both to oneself and to those within earshot.

Such defeatist talk must stop. This is not to suggest that there should not be constructive criticism orhealthy debate. But a critical- ingredient if there is to be national recovery is the state of mind of theindividual. Some positive thinking — and positive talk — will go a long way to redressing the situation.

Lenni Brenner, an American Jew, recenilywrote a book putting across the argument thatthe Holocaust was exploited and aggravated byinternational Jewry with the aim of eliminatinganti-Zionist religiou.s Jews, arousing worldsympathy and establishing a Jewish state.Aliyah figures are down and Israel isundergoing a particularly tough timeeconomically.

Brenner's vitriolic treatise and the decline inaliyah are not as unrelated as they might seem atfirst glance. They are twin victims of the malaisewhich has gripped Zionism worldwide andsymbolise the urgent need to ic-cvnmine Jewishand Zionist priorities both in Israel itself and inthe Diaspora.

The recent 38th conference of the South AfricanZionist Federation in Johannesburg attempted

realities of" the world today", he told me in hisTe l Av i \ l a w o f fi c e . " A n d 1 b e l i e v e t h e S AZionist Federation, with its high standing andprestige, is the body to do it. World Zionism issuffering from a great deal of inertia, and urgentproblems such as aliyah. Jewish education andas,similation are being neglected. A committeeof inquiry should be established, comprisingfour or five people and presided over by aSupreme Court judge, and it should invitepeople tx) give evidence as to what the Zionistmovement (worldwide) should be doing today,and how. Functional Zionism is what is needed,not ideological Zionism. Within si.x months itcould come up with a blueprint.

"An entire reappraisal is needed. Proof of aneffective restructuring would be aliyah figuresand involvement on the part of the youngleaders. Where are the people between the agesof 20 and J9 today? Here in Israel we have 25M i n i s t r i e s i n t h e n e w G o v e r n m e n t . B u t w l u ) i s

The morewesterners come on aliyah. the more the way ollife here will be altered to the standards to whichw e a r e a c c u s t o m e d i n S o u t h A f r i c a .

"Zionists living in the Diaspora have to adopt amore positive attitude to aliyah. Aliyah is thehighest rung of the ladder, but there arcnumerous other ways of getting activelyinvolved — through trading, investing in Israel.J e w i s h e d u c a t i o n . "Such critical issues are what I would like to seetackled at conl'erence. Regarding the questionof aliyah. problems that existed two years agomight not be problems today, and theconference needs to address itsell to thepractical realities of life today in Israel and inthe Diaspora".

"Ialso believe that a great deal would be achievedby holding the conference in Israel", he added."I know there are logistical difficulties, but I'veattended a conference here held by Hadassah;

they brought 3.500 delegates from the UnitedStates. It would be a boon ftir the former SouthAfricans living here. It would be the living linkb e t w e e n t h e o r y a n d p r a c t i c e " . □

Dora Garb, right, formerly ofEast London, is one of many volunteers who run the Trampiada, a kiosk on the Tel Aviv-Haifa highway near theRa'anana lurnoff Started 13 years ago by Ruth Reiss, also a former South African, theTrampiada provides lea, coffee,cold-drinks and sandwiches free of charge to Israeli soldiers on the road. The 1.500 members of the audience packing theBoksburg Town Hall fidget in anticipation.Behind him hangs a massive Hag. a three-armedblack swastika standing out starkly on a whitecircle against a blood-red background. Thescenario is chillingly reminiscent of Nuremberg— Hi t ler 's Nuremberg in 1936. Mi l i tarymarches blare through the loudspeakers.

Terreblanche's delivery begins with a bellowbuilding up to a near-hysterical crescendo. Withexpansive gestures, timed for maximum effect,he punches the air and tlings his arms outcrucifixion-style as his voice breaks withemotion. Then, pausing for a deliberate second,he dramatically drops to a whisper, compellingthe audience to concentrate on every fibre of hissweating jaw.He carries his listeners totally. Using rhythmicrepetitions with hypnotic effect, he preachesracial hatred in a display of oratory that vergeson biblical yet revivalist rhetoric.

He appeals to sentiment, nostalgia and theharassed history of the Afrikaner, remindingt h e a u d i e n c e t h a t " t h e B r i t i s h - J e w i s h

Eugene Ney Terreblanche, leader of the AWB(Afrikaner Weerstandsbewcging, AfrikanerResistance Movement), an extremist right-wingparamilitary organisation formed in 1972, wasrecently projected into the public eye with thearrest of nine of its leaders, the conv'ction of

"Neither 1 nor the AWB are ant i -Semit ic", hedeclares. "Rather, we are pro-Christian. AndChristian ideology, which is the fundamentalpillar of Afrikaner nationalism and of an AWBgovernment, is non-negotiable. Nobody who isnot a Christian will sit in our parliament".

Terreblanche emphasises that he does not hatethe Jews — "I don't hate anyone" — andpromises that an AWB government will notdiscriminate against them, "provided theyr e m a i n l o y a l t o t h e A f r i k a n e r f a t h e r l a n d " .

The first AWB public meeting was held onMarch 11, 1976 in the Brits Town Hall, outsideJohannesburg. Groenewald told the audiencethat the three-armed swastika symbolized theeventual victory of the white Christian over the666 forces of the anti-Christ. The four points ofthe star stood in opposition to the six-pointeds t a r o f " i n t e r n a t i o n a l Z i o n i s m " a n d i t s

derivant, the five-pointed star of Communism,which represented the "satanic ant i -Chr is t " .

The red on the fiag symbolized the blood whichthe Christian, the Afrikaner and the white manwould sacrifice to ensure self-preservation;white represented racial purity; and the blackand white signified racial division.

Two days later. Johannesburg's daily. The Star,commented. "One wonders how long it willtake the police to open a docket on theAfr ikaner Weerstandsbeweging. Thisunpleasant organisation, with an insignMunhappily similar to the Nazi swastika, is amenace to South African society. It is nakedlyanti-Jewish and its tirades against the Jewsevoke memories of the Third Reich".

Public meetings were held around South Africa,scores of Afrikaner youths signed up andthousands of people bought tape-recordings ofTerreblanche's speeches.The Government had ordered a probe into theactivities of the AWB almost as soon as it hadbeen launched; ten years later, in March 1982.Minister of Law and Order Louis le Grangew a r n e d Te r r e b l a n c h e a b o u t h i s t h r e a t s o fviolence. The Prime Minister followed by

under the Internal Secur i ty Act . Usingmine-detectors and operating under cover ofdarkness, the police had discovered massivearms caches buried in maize fields in metaltrunks one metre deep.

present; the place, the Fountains near Pretoria.The flag, according to the AWB, represents thet h r e e d i v i n e s e v e n s f r o m R e v e l a t i o n , b u t

displayed in the clutches of an imperial eagle onthe front of a Storm Falcon T-shirt, there is no

denying the effect".Some compare him to Paul Kruger, the firstPresident of the Transvaal. There is a certain

physical resemblance, and Terreblanchepunctuates his speeches with passages from theOld Testament, which Kruger was known to do."I see myself as a Noah", he admitted. "I mustbuild an ark, even though the people may laughat me. I have known this since childhood. TheAWB was not born in hate or out of frustration,but out of a love for our own. Former South Africans both. Leonard is anattorney by profession and Lawrence achemical engineer. "My wife Linda and I cameon aliyah from Johannesburg 12 years ago",recalled Leonard. "Our daughter, Vael, was oneyear old. I had a South Afrioan law degree butstudied Israelilawso that I could practise here. Irequalified — and promptly met a smooth-talking American entrepreneur whose daughterI had taken out when I came to Israel as avolunteer after the Six-Day War".The fast-talking American resembled EzerWeizman and wore a ten-gallon hat. His idea —to establish a shop in the duty-free section ofBen Gurion (then Lod) Airport selling Israelicheeses. An Amer ican and Frenchman were

roped in and Leonard, who was still on ulpanand did not have much money, received a smallshare for handling the legal work.

One by one. the others left leaving Leonardholding the baby. He bought a giftwrappingplant in Rishon le Zion and eventually beganmanufacturing his own chocolate. "It turnedout like mud", he confessed. "1 added water,which is the worst thing you can do. and itbecame a lump of 6o/z."

That was when Lawrence Goodman came intothe picture. He and his wife Lynette. both fromPort Elizabeth, had come on aliyah with theirthree children and were still on ulpan. Lawrencebrought with him a family heritage of the sweetbusiness, and with his expertise the company'sfortunes moved in one direction only.

Today Taste of Israel empk)ys 75 people,produces 400.000 lollipops a day as well as a fullrange ol" slabs and boxes of assorted chocolates,and exports to South Africa, the United Statesand England. The dwindling randThe low exchange rate of the rand against thedollar is causing anxiety to many former SouthAl'ricans who receive interest or dividends fromassets invested in the old country. South African bowlers distinguishedthemselves at the 1984 nat ional bowlschampionships, which culminated in thrillingfinals at the Ra'anana Bowling Club. The standard of play reached a level unequalledin previous years. It augurs well for the future ofthe game in this country and serves asencouragement to the reputation alreadyearned by previous Israeli teams competing ati n t e r n a t i o n a l l e v e l .

A striking feature of this year's tournament wasthe remarkable performance of several young

In a cliff-hanger women's singles final MiriamJankelowitz edged out Molly Skudowii7.2l-2().after the latter was ahead 20-13 and wasunfortunate enough to move the jack nearer toher opponent's wood on the last head.
