1906 - 2013 __________________________________________________________________________________________________

Zion is a HAPPENING place [1] The Call Committee is organized and approved by the church council. Norm Unterseher is the committee chair. If

you have questions on the process, please address those questions to Norm. Thanks to those who agreed to be on the Committee.

[2] Don’t forget Zion now has an automatic withdrawal to pay your church pledge. Many people use automatic withdrawal to pay their bills. If you travel or plan to go South for the winter, this is a good way to remember Zion and the

needs of the congregation here. [3] If the doors to the church look particularly bright and new, it is because they were recently professionally painted.

Thanks to the Property and Management Committee. They really make the building look good.

[4] The Youth/Education Committee, with the approval of the Church Council, is opening a position for a Youth Director at Zion. There is a job description in the church office. This is to work with Middle-School and High School Youth.

[5] Middle School Youth will soon be selling Zion t-shirts to the congregation. A pretty blue color, the kids designed the shirt and picked out the Bible verse on the back. There will be a variety of sizes available.

[6] Several women from Zion recently attended the Synodical Women’s gathering in Billings. They had coffee with our former Parish Nurse Sharon Allard. Cammy Sue Oakland won the scholarship to attend the National Women’s Synodical

Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina, next summer.

[7] Students from the School to Work program at DCHS, taught by Dean Myers, recently completed paved pathways for our Prayer Garden. The walk is cement and gravel. If you walk the path you will get an idea of the design for the continuing development of the garden. Always a work in progress, the Prayer Garden is a lovely addition to the building

and the community.

[8] Our Stewardship/Evangelism Committee is one of those groups that works quietly and efficiently in the congregation. Their next project will be an Advent outreach to the congregation in the form of a devotional book. The concept of

reaching members of the congregation and determining their needs is “internal evangelism” and has to be a part of the larger program of outreach into the community.

[9] No one can understand the work of the Loaves and Fishes Committee, the Community Food Bank or the Used Furniture Room unless they are a part of the day-to-day activities that swirl around people and their needs. This is a

never-ending mission Zion’s faith community provides to Glendive and the surrounding area. From abused women and their children, to homeless and jobless people, to the hungry and the poor, we are part of a never-ending call to serve God’s people.

[10] The Saturday night worship service more than doubled the attendance for an alternative service. Meeting at 5 p.m.

in the chapel, worship is an informal gathering of prayer, scripture, meditation and Holy Communion. It is a way to meet the needs of those who cannot gather on Sunday morning for whatever reason.

[11] Fall is always the season for Lutheran World Relief, quilts, layette and health kits for the women of the church. A dedicated group meets on Monday mornings throughout the winter to tie quilts. Women at home cut squares and sew

quilt tops. Boxes are being collected from surrounding congregations and soon they will be on their way, courtesy of Dave Svenvold and Steve Merrill.

Our Stewardship and Evangelism

Committee is in the process of

updating our Time and Talents

Resource Book, which is kept in

the church office. We will be

mailing Time and Talents Surveys to new members, so they

may be added to the lists of volunteers. Anyone wishing to

complete a survey may get one on the small table in the nar-

thex of the church. If you filled one out earlier and wish to

change something, you may complete another one. Com-

pleted surveys can be placed in the offering plate or submitted

to the church office. 1 Peter 4:10 “Like good stewards of

the manifold grace of God, serve one another with what-

Dear friends in Christ, I received a phone call this afternoon from Alan Durand telling me of the death of his wife (November 8th, 2012) of some 60+ years, Edna Durand. Alan and Edna were from Saskatchewan and had moved to Glendive a number of years ago. Alan and Edna and son Robert joined Zion Lutheran Church as they had been raised Lu-theran. Alan was very faithful in church attendance, a tall, slender man with a quiet voice. The couple and their son moved back home within the past few months. The church Alan was raised in is gone so he will maintain his membership here at Zion. Alan often went to the Senior Center and some of you may know him from there. Robert is a cerebral palsy adult and is having more trouble getting around. It is good to know Allen has family in the community he returned to. Please remember the Durand family in your prayers. Alan was a caregiver for Edna after a severe stroke some years ago. Their address is: Alan Durand Box 465 Glaslyn SK CA SOM-OYO May God bless Edna’s memory among us. Our journey touches many lives as we pass through. Pastor Avis

Opportunities for Hearing, Learning and Giving PRISON MINISTRY On Reformation Sunday, October 29

th, Pastor Rob

Nedbalek will be bringing us the message regarding his work as the called pastor at the newly formed ELCA mission congregation at the prison in Deer Lodge. At this time it look as though he will be with us on Saturday, preach at the Saturday evening worship service, lead a discussion group on Sunday morning and preach on Sunday. We will be taking a special offering at that time which will go toward the work that is being done at the prison. I am hoping we will get some ideas for our own mission outreach to the prison here in Glendive.

GLOBAL MISSION Sunday, November 10

th, Pastor Larry Westphal from the

Chicago office of the ELCA and the director for Global Missions in the church wide office will be at Zion to offer us a glimpse into the work of the church in the world. He will work with the Sunday school children during their class time and also preach on Saturday evening and Sunday morning. Zion has always been active in world missions but this will give us an opportunity to see what is happening today. At the services we will take a special offering for a world mission project. It is our opportunity to “be” the church in a worldwide setting.

As noted we will be taking special offerings for both these unique events. We invite you to give as you are able. It is a good work that is being done by these folks and we want to help as best we can. May the Holy Spirit bless our endeavors and our stewardship.

Rev. Lanny Westphal As director of ELCA Global Church Sponsorship, Lanny’s passion is con-necting people across the ELCA with missionaries and ministries across the globe. Throughout his ministry, he has been strongly committed to including young people as full participants in the church. Before moving to Chicago, he served parishes in Wisconsin and Minnesota, and then as Assistant to Bishop April Ulring Larson of the La Crosse Area Synod, where he also served as ELCA Mis-sion Director and Stewardship Specialist. He is married to Mary, and they have two grown sons, Carl and Mark.

DCHS School to Work program taught by Dean

Myers, recently had a crew on site at our Prayer

Garden. The kids were putting in a walkway

through the Garden and spent several weeks

working. They provided the labor for the project

and Zion paid for the materials. It was a big job and

we thank Dean and his students for their efforts.

CHURCH CONSTITUTION

Watch for copies of the church constitution

available this month in the narthex, for you

to pick up, take home and read through.

A committee composed of Pastor Avis,

Sheryl Stansburg, Betty Mawbey and Norm

Unterseher worked through our constitution

this summer and updated it so it is in keep-

ing with the ELCA Constitution. The rewrit-

ing that was done was to update material

that was no longer valid.

The congregation will be asked to approve

the document at the annual meeting in

January. It has already received approval

from the Montana Synod Council and

Zion’s church council.

Dear Friends and Family,

I pray this letter finds you well. As many of you are probably aware, last summer I had the amazing

opportunity to spend two months in Kenya on a mission trip through Intervarsity, a Christian ministry for college students. Upon my recent graduation from Montana State

University, with a Bachelors of Science in Psychology and Sociology, I cannot seem to stay away and have decided to

return to Kenya for six months with Africa Inland Mission (AIM). My previous time in Kenya proved to be life-changing, and opened my eyes to the needs and suffering

of others around the world, and I wish to build on and expand the skills I obtained last summer.

Recently, I was accepted as a short-term missionary with AIM in Nairobi, Kenya to serve from January 15, 2014

through June 2014. My assignment will be mentoring young women who are looking to develop their skills for jobs that will allow them to earn a good income to support

their families. This would involve leading Bible studies, one-on-one discipleship meetings, and simply listening to

the women’s stories and being there to support them. Before I can participate in this exciting and challenging journey, I must raise a total of $9,000 by my deadline of

December 1, 2013. This cost covers room and board, international airfare, and field expenses. First, I ask for

your thoughts and prayers during this time of preparation and while I am overseas. You can also help me by contributing financially to AIM in my name. Your

financial contribution would be greatly appreciated and help me reach my fundraising goal. Checks must be made

out to Africa Inland Mission, and my name cannot be anywhere on the check. All donations are tax-deductible. Please mail donations to myself so I can record them and

pass them along to AIM. Thank you in advance for your support!
