We are incredibly excited that Zinduka Festival 2015 is

nally happening! After the inaugural festival in 2013 andthe second edition in 2014, participants were unanimouson the need to make Zinduka Festival an annual event. As local organizing committee, we promised to hold thethird edition this year, again in Arusha, a city resonating sowell with the collective efforts of the people for regionalintegration and Pan-Africanism.

The Zinduka Festival provides a mingling space for EastAfricans to not only celebrate our diversities but also

to engage in the integration process. Indeed, Zinduka isan awakening of our consciousness as common peopleto realize the tremendous power we have to changeour destiny.

Special thanks goes to the Zinduka Organising Committee(ZOC) for planning the 2015 Festival; your dedicationto this noble cause is highly appreciated and cannot berepaid.

I would like to convey my appreciation to the tenConveners of this years fora for their support andenthusiasm in the planning process. Your dedicationdepicted the very spirit of East Africaness,

To all the delegates and participants of this years festival, let this not be just a one-off event; may the Zinduka Spiritcontinue to consume you and may you leave this placewith an energized spirit of East Africaness. There is powerin numbers so as East Africans, united we stand, dividedwe fall.

    As for Zinduka

I had an absolutely fascinating conversation withZaainab in Moshi the other day. In Kenya, shecould well have been called Wanjiku or Nalubegain Uganda or even Rwagasore in BurundiorAinkamiye in Rwanda you get the drift. She wasa typical Tanzanian woman but then again notcompletely typical because she had gathered theguts to talk to this lonely, linguistically clumsystranger!

The important thing at the time for me at least, was how curious Zaainab was.

She explained that she was originally from Dar-es-salaam and wanted to know what I, mtu wabara kutoka Kenya, was doing in Tanzania andif indeed we were taking all the plum Tanzanianjobs. Lakini jamani, mbona hamna hata aibunyinyi waKenya? she asked. She seemed to switchto Kiswahili every time she had the most probing

and sincere questions. The more mundane issueswere discussed in English which she spoke well, even though a little less condently. Her Swahilion the other hand was so perfect, I wished I couldsimilarly explain uently and compellingly thatKenyans are in fact not hyenas.

Sisi sio si. I started to say, Tuna roho sa piakama wengine then I hesitated as I searchedfor the words to explain that we were actuallythe victims of stereotypes that were created ata certain time when some of the accusationsthat resulted in this image may have held sometruth. Her eye contact was captivating and shegenuinely wanted to know not because shecould do anything about Tanzanian jobs being

taken by Kenyans, but because she wanted to forma well-informed opinion. She recalled that she hadbeen in a restaurant in Arusha and had been served bya Kenyan Manager. He was courteous, she observed and actually more efcient than his Tanzaniancounterpart; the restaurant however, seemed shortstaffed even with the Kenyan there , so she could notclaim that they had been dispossessed of any jobs.

From this conversation I learnt that Zaainab gother insights and guts from listening to BBC andparticipating in some of their call-in-programs. Shegot to know the continent better ever since she startedlistening to the radio and now wanted to know evenmore because it affected her. She asked what I knewabout Ebola and if our country had really shut theborders to Ebola and if there was a chance that itcould use panya routes to get into the region. Evenwomen need to know these things, she asserted andwent on to ask her questions in the end asking manymore than I can address here.

I tell the story of my chance meeting with Zaainabbecause she will make a wonderful participant atZinduka. It is people like her and you that will helpmake Zinduka the space it aspires to be; a valuablemeeting point and place for conversations on regionalintegration a celebration of our diversity and thepotential this holds for making us even better, smarterand brighter together than as disparate individualsgroping in a strange place. Zinduka belongs to us alland we hope that you will seize the opportunity toown every bit of it.

    Karibuni sana!

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times~ Charles Dickens

Fellow citizens and Panafricanists, welcome tothe beautiful green City of Arusha and to ZindukaFestival 2015! The Third Edition of Zindukashould make it clear to everyone that we meanbusiness. We mean business because we want thelives and voices of everyone of the 150 millionEast Africans to count and we are committed tomake sure that they indeed do so.

There are many things we can be happy about andthat we should celebrate within the Community.

But we dedicate this years Festival to Burundi. Westand with the People of Burundi and condemnthe atrocities committed. We are appalled bythe hundreds of people who have been killedsince violence broke out in the country in Apriland regret the over 150,000 people who havebeen uprooted from their homes and now live indeplorable conditions in refugee camps aroundthe region.

We recognize that the root cause of the violenceis the violation of the Arusha Peace Agreement forBurundi and the countrys Constitution. We areclear that the government in place is illegal andillegitimate as it is in ofce unconstitutionally.

But we also regret that EAC has neither beenable to protect the people of Burundi, a MemberState and neither has it been able to rein in a

rogue State. This calls for a re-examination ofthe foundations of the EAC and the Treaty thatestablishes it. We must start that conversation. But of immediate import is to stop the killings andbring to justice the perpetrators in Burundi. We

the people appreciate all that the EAC, the AU, the UNand the International Community are doing but we feel

that more needs to be done and it needs to be doesmore quickly to stop the carnage and pull the countryfrom the precipice.

Thus this year Zinduka is less of a celebration and moreof solidarity with our suffering brothers and sisters inBurundi. We must stand with each other in shine andin rain!

    The situation we nd ourselves in today in East Africaechoes the melancholic words from the depth of timesin Charles Dickens A Tale of Two Cities;

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it wasthe age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it wasthe epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, itwas the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness,it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair,we had everything before us, we had nothing beforeus, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were allgoing direct the other way in short, the period wasso far like the present period, that some of its noisiest

authorities insisted on its being received, for good orfor evil...Pray for Burundi. Stand with Burundi. Fight for Burundi.Whatever you do, do something wherever you are!Injustice in Burundi is injustice everywhere!!This dedication is in line with our theme for this year;Integration... People First! So let us engage and let usstand for and with one another... shoulder to shoulderin solidarity!

Africa Moja! Africa Huru! One People, One Destiny!
