A properly doped crystal diode Has sharp breakdown voltage An electronic component which can be used

to make a very simple voltage regulator circuit

Characteristics . .

• A Zener diode is always reverse connected

• When forward biased, its characteristics are just like of ordinary diode

• It has sharp breakdown voltage, called Zener voltage

As a Voltage Regulator

Input voltage variable Zener maintain constant voltage

and current to load connected parallel with it

Incoming excess voltage is

dropped by series resistance R

Increased current is conducted by Zener diode

Load variable

Load resistance decreases so increases load current

Extra current can't come from source because drop in R won’t change

Additional current conducted by Zener through in it

Zener always keep voltage and

current constant to load
