Gujarat: Covid 2nd wavesuppresses Q1 CNG sales

AHMEDABAD: Stricterterritorial restrictions imposedto tackle Covid's second waveadversely impactedcompressed natural gas (CNG)sales of Gujarat's top city gasdistribution (CGD) companiesin April-June, compared to thepreceding January-Marchquarter.

For instance, CNG sales ofthe state-run Gujarat Gas Ltd(GGL) across geographicalareas declined 8%sequentially to 141 millionmetric standard cubic metres(mmscm) in the first quarterof the current fiscal from 154mmscm in the last quarter ofthe financial year 2020-21.

Similarly, CNG sales ofAdani Total Gas Limited (ATGL)

in its authorized areasdropped 9% quarter-on-quarter (Q-o-Q) to 68 mmscmin April-June quarter of thisfiscal from 75 mmscm inJanuary-March quarter of theprevious year. The figureswere part of the quarterlyfinancial data released by theprivate sector company.

CGD sector expertsattributed the reduction inCNG sales to restrictedmobility following theimposition of strict restrictionsto tackle the second wave ofthe pandemic.

"The subsequent outbreakof another Covid-19 (thesecond wave of thepandemic) and resultant localrestrictions impacted the

natural gas demand, mainlyfrom CNG and industrialcategory," GGL said in aregulatory filing about itsquarter performance.

The company, however, quickly added that theremoval of restrictions laterboosted the natural gasdemand, which has nowbounced back to normallevels seen in the fourthquarter of the last fiscal. Infact, the sales now havereached their pre-pandemiclevels, maintained industryplayers. The first quarter CNGsales, however, more thandoubled year-on-year due tothe low base effect as saleshad tanked substantially inthe wake of the lockdown.

Ruckus during VMCschool committee polls

Ahmedabad : Counting ofvotes for the municipal primaryeducation committee of theVadodara MunicipalCorporation (VMC) on Fridaywas marked by huge ruckusafter the saffron partycandidates won on all theeight seats for which electionswere held on Friday.

The BJP had won fourseats uncontested earlier andpolls were to be held for eightseats. Given the strongmajority that the ruling partyenjoys in the civic body, it wasexpected that the party wouldsail through effortlessly.

The BJP had put up eightcandidates even as theCongress had put up only one.The Congress putting up atoken fight knowing well thatit did not stand a chance towin. In the election whereeach corporator was to casteight votes, BJP has 69corporators in the civic body.

ruckus took place as one ofthe corporators had used tickmarks and then overwrote tochange them to cross marksfor voting. Ideally, a corporatorhas to use only cross marksfor voting. The Congressraised an objection to this. When some Congress workerswho were not counting agentsentered room, BJP membersobjected to this. The Congresstoo objected to presence ofBJP members in the countingroom leading to arguments. After a lot of arguments, itwas decided that the two votescast by over writing will notbe considered. This is thereason why two BJPcandidates got one vote lesserthan the other six.

It is for the first time afterthe BJP came to power in VMCthat the municipal schoolcommittee does not have asingle corporator from theopposition.

Congress hasmerely seven.

Six of thew i n n i n gcandidates got69 votes eacheven as two got68 votes. TheC o n g r e s scandidate got56 votes. The
