Welcome to...Zealandier ToursTravel Club GuideHello to all our Club Members, we are pleased to report that membership of this club just keeps on growing, hardly a week goes past without a call requesting a copy of our Travel Guide.

It has been an interesting and enjoyable past six months and we are looking forward to the next season of Travel Club Activities

We have a varied selection of trips with something for everyone.

Jan and I take pleasure in being able to provide a selection of tours for our Travel Club members and we believe this new calendar will provide opportunity for many of you to take advantage of these and maybe share the experience with friends, family & neighbours. Where possible we provide a door to door service which takes much of the hassle out for you, all you have to do is pick up the phone and call us and we do the rest.

Some of the highlights from our recent tours –

Forgotten Highway Rail Trail – This truly is a 4 day tour not to missed, the contrasts between countryside, attractions and accommodation have to be experienced. We have scheduled this tour again in October – book early, limited spaces.

Molesworth Station - Breath-taking country, the vastness is breath-taking. Picton was our base and we found more things to do then time allowed. A memorable time was had by all.

Katikati Food Trail – I believe that this trip surprised us all, judging by the comments received we will have to work this tour in again somewhere.

Pirongia Clydesdales – A trip back to a past era for many. Too difficult to explain, you have to experience the clip clop of those hooves on the roads and hear the local stories to appreciate this region.

Some new Events Coming up –

• Hobbit Evening Banquet & Tour • Northern Explorer Hamilton to Ohakune – overnight Luxurious Chateau Tongariro• Murray River July Christmas Cruise• South Island Winter Snow Train Trip• Italy, Rome, Switzerland & Mediterranean Cruise• Wellington Wearable Arts Awards Show & Tour

Plus day trips to suit most everyone.

We often receive the comment –“Oh I’ve been there before.” We respectfully suggest that most of us have been most places in New Zealand, but often it has been some time back or maybe just driven through en-route to somewhere else. We have found that there is much to see and learn about our country, time brings changes and the company we travel with can make for an interesting and very enjoyable time.

Please ensure you register your interests in any tours / trips as early as possible to avoid disappointments. Register of interest helps us with forward planning.

If there is somewhere you would like to visit which we have not listed, please do not hesitate to advise us and we can arrange this or add to our next calendar.

If you hear of any upcoming shows, again we ask that you please let us know.

We look forward to welcoming you on another Zealandier tour.

From the producers of Jersey Boys, The Sound of Music and Annie, comes another critically acclaimed production from London’s West End – the ever-popular musical Singin’ In The Rain.

Set in 1927, it tells the story of the first Hollywood musical, This spectacular production is packed full of the charm, romance, comedy and tinsel town glamour of one of the world’s best-loved movies and features all the songs from the glorious MGM score including Good Morning, Make ‘em Laugh, Moses Supposes and the classic Singin’ in the Rain. The movie’s iconic choreography is flawlessly recreated and with the help of 12,000 litres of water, the audience can enjoy one of the most famous dance routines live on stage, with some leaving the theatre a little wetter than when they arrived!

To achieve the famous Singin’ In The Rain scene, the production uses half a mile of flexible pipe work, a 10 tonne water tank and a water system that creates a downpour from above as well as flooding from below the stage, in total ‘raining’ (and recycling) over 12,000 litres of water per performance.

This year Zealandier Tours are partnering again with Kaimai Café who are passionate about supporting Breast Cancer locally here in the BOP. Last year we all had a fun morning coupled with a great breakfast and ALL the proceeds went to local Cancer Research Society. $1700.00 was raised from this event last year and it is the aim of the boys at Kaimai Café to increase this amount. They have some exciting speakers and events to surprise us with again this year. Lasts years high point was when Mike won the cake. I can say he shared this with all his staff.

In 2014 over 2000 kiwis hosted a pink ribbon breakfast and collectively raised over a million dollars for breast cancer research. This year we hope to beat that and raise even more to help New Zealand women. Lorraine Downes, NZBCF Ambassador says “Research is vital for better treatments to improve survival of this very complex cancer, and ultimately for prevention. The Foundation is funding several world-class projects right here in New Zealand – Pink Ribbon Breakfast is a great way to raise money for the cause.”

Ethnic Dining Experience - Indian Date Friday 12th June Time 6.00 pm Cost $55.00Payment As you board, money in an envelope with your name on it pleasePrice Includes Door to door transport & dinner. Not Included Drinks are additional cost

Tonight - Let’s try Indian cuisine. The beginning of our series of Ethnic Dining outings.

We often think of ethnic food as non-traditional cuisine from lesser known countries, but, upon some thought, I entertained the question, “Isn’t all food ethnic food?”

One Dictionary definition of ethnic is:

Pertaining to or characteristic of a people, especially a group (ethnic group) sharing a common and distinctive culture, religion, language, or the like.

If we apply this definition to the term ethnic food, we lump every single style of cooking from every single region of the world. Whether it is popularized cuisine from countries like France, Italy, Spain, or China, or lesser known cuisine from countries like Ethiopia, Columbia, or Vietnam, they are forced together under “ethnic food”.

Let’s be adventurous and learn about some of these other cultures over food.

Mount Ngongataha is a volcanic dome 757 metres above sea level that overlooks the city of Rotorua, Mount Ngongataha is an iconic peak for the Affiliate of Te Arawa iwi/hapu. Its traditional history reinforces tribal identity and solidarity and continuity between generations. The reserves remain under the management of the Department of Conservation. Not much is known about historical Maori use of timber trees on the mountain. There was rapid removal of timber following the arrival of Europeans. Only the southern slopes were protected by reserves and remained unlogged. In 1926, a saw-mill and six homes were built on the south-west slopes of the mountain, with a tramway (light railway) to transport the logs from the mountain. By 1935, most of the mountain was bare of forest, apart from the areas already preserved as Scenic Reserve. This caused some concern, as shown by the following extract from the Auckland Star of 6 July 1935.

“….the last remnant of forest on the slopes of Mount Ngongataha is to be felled and milled………for the sake of a paltry bit of building material….”

Since the 1930s, the logged forest has been recovering, and most of the mountain is once more covered in forest.

To begin your Skyline Rotorua adventure, take a leisurely uphill Gondola ride and enjoy the extensive views of Rotorua, the surrounding lakes and geothermal areas.

At the top, we will enjoy the culinary delights of the Stratosfare Restaurant & Bar, whilst watching all those enjoy the exciting adventure activities of the Luge. Sky-swing / Zipline Zoom or check out the Giant Jelly Bean shop.

A warm, pleasant way to enjoy a mid-winters day.

Otunui Paddle Boat Cruise - Wairoa RiverDate Sunday 25th OctoberTime To be advised – river is tidalCost $60.00Payment As you board, money in an envelope with your name on it pleasePrice Includes Door to door transport & Otunui feeNot Included Refreshments are additional cost

Otunui, New Zealand’s oldest operating paddleboat, is steel hulled, 16m long, weighs 13 tonnes, with a diesel engine driving twin side paddle wheels though hydraulic pumps and motors.

A paddleboat with more than 100 years of history in New Zealand, the Otunui was assembled in Wanganui from parts shipped from England in 1907 and went into service on the Whanganui River.

She was built to carry passengers and freight between Pipiriki and Taumaranui for Hatrick & Co. who operated over 12 vessels of this type.

After purchasing the boat in 2010, Peter Koole moved the boat to Lake Maraetai then Lake Whakamaru on the Waikato River near Mangakino. However with too small a local population to support the business, Otunui was moved to the Wairoa River, Tauranga in 2014. Now operating from Waimarino Adventure Park, the Otunui continues to give the best 2 hour scenic cruises to satisfied customers.

Turning 107 in 2014, the Otunui has a colourful history – carrying a variety of passengers ranging from cattle, sheep and wool, to the Queen (on a passenger cruise to Huka Falls).

Tokoroa’s tall sculptures were first suggested by landscape designer Colleen Priest, as part of concept designs for the Central Business District upgrade for Tokoroa in 1996. At a public meeting in 1997 there was very positive support for the idea of a collection of sculptured poles representing Tokoroa’s many different cultures, clubs and organisations.

Since then, the project has produced over 40 Talking Poles in a variety of themes, styles and materials and there are more Poles in the making. The sculptures can be seen mainly around the CBD of Tokoroa and form a trail for tourists to follow. The sculptures have helped to build pride in the town, and are now an established tourist attraction. Many local businesses contributed funds and in-kind support.

Over the Moon is an adventurous boutique cheesemaking company that uses the world’s finest ingredients to make exciting new dairy products, while paying homage to the great traditions of cheesemaking internationally. We are a small business, making around 12,000 kilograms of cheese a year, and have a big commitment to developing and promoting New Zealand’s dairy offerings by tapping into international research, development and innovation. Situated in a small factory on State Highway 1 in Putaruru in the heart of the South Waikato, Over the Moon is open for tastings, demonstrations and cheesemaking courses.

We will take a short stop in Tirau, a small attractive township in a rural setting, with the Kaimai ranges as a backdrop. It has a population of approx 800 people.

Starting with The Dog in Tirau, Steven Clothier has made hundreds of Creations, turning Tirau into the “Corrugated Iron Capital of New Zealand” and supplying customers throughout New Zealand and overseas.
