Taieri Gorge Express & Otago Peninsula Sights (8 hrs)A full day tour that includes a scenic train journey of the Taieri plains and gorge followed by a small group bus experience that takes you to the remote parts of the Otago Peninsula.

You will be met by your guide inside Port Chalmers and then transferred to the Historic Dunedin Railway station where you will have 30 minutes to enjoy this architectural masterpiece before you board the prestigious train. This scenic 4 hour journey gives you the rare opportunity to go inland on your cruise; the train crossing the southern parts of Dunedin city and then travelling through spectacular scenery along the rugged banks of the mighty Taieri River. The train negotiates the narrow and exhilarating Taieri Gorge travelling across wrought iron viaducts and through tunnels carved by hand more than 100 years ago. The train moves slowly at scenic spots and also stops to let you get out and stretch your legs.

Once the train returns to the Dunedin station you will be met by our guide and taken out on the Otago Peninsula, predominantly of volcanic origin, steep and very rugged on the PacificOcean side. A number of walkways give you access to many breathtaking views and sheer cliff faces like “The Chasm” and “Lovers Leap”. Your visit would be incomplete until you have walked on one of these beaches, so we will take you to arguably themostscenicbeachwhereifweareluckywewillfindarareNZ sea-lion basking in the sun. We make yet another stop at a scenic lookoutwherewewalk throughamagnificent standof Macrocarpa trees to enjoy the panoramic views of Cape Saunders which happened to be one of the only two landmarks referenced in Captain James Cook’s journal on his inaugural travels around NZ.

This will bring the conclusion of your tour, where you will be returned to your ship with plenty of time to spare.

NB: Viewing of Seal Lions on the beaches is expected but NOT guaranteed , due to these animals living in the wild and are free to roam as they please.

Akaroa to Christchurch Sightseeing Tour (6 hrs)Depart the beautiful tranquil harbour of Akaroa to explore the historic French and British settlement village of the same name, with its colonial architecture, galleries, craft stores, and cafes, all nestled in the heart of an ancient volcano. As we ascent out of the township you will be afforded spectacular scenery, with the viewing of Takamatua Bay, Robinsons Bay, Duvauchelle Bay, and Barry’s Bay and several scheduled stops which offer some incredible panoramic views and photo opportunities.

After driving through the pleasant country town of Little River and passing Lakes Forsyth and Ellesmere - we climb again to where we have commanding views of Lyttelton Harbour and Township to our right, and the patchwork quilt appearance of the Canterbury Plains to our left as that vista opens up.

An easy five minute walk from the car park, takes us to theSign of The Takahe lookout vantage point which provides a comprehensive view of Christchurch, the City centre – the devastation, the rebuild, and a panoramic view of the Canterbury Plains, the majestic Southern Alps, and the vast Pacific Ocean.

As we descend into the area of the Central Business District in the heart of Christchurch city, the evidence of the earthquakes are clearly notable. So too however are the signs of recovery as this once-beautiful city repairs and rebuilds. Fortunately a number of the cities Heritage buildings withstood the destruction that came with the earthquakes and remain as a reminder to our Colonial past. The city centre is now boasting a “Cardboard Cathedral” (a world first) and what we locals call a “Start-up Mall”. A shopping mall made from shipping containers painted brightly to add colour and spread a happiness back into what was once a thriving bustling city centre.

After lunch we introduce you to the iconic Christchurch Botanic Gardens. These gardens cover an area of 21 hectares, contained primarilywithinthecircleofthegentlyflowingwatersoftheAvon River.Rightintheheartofthecity, youfindagardengrowntofeatureoneofthefinestcollectionsofexoticandnativeplantsin New Zealand. Spend 30 minutes strolling through the park at your leisure, relishing in the beauty and tranquillity that this special place provides.
