Zealandier ToursAuckland Day Tours Auckland – the gateway to New Zealand and also rated as the third most liveable city in the world on the global Mercer Quality of Life Survey. It is New Zealand’s largest city with over 1/3 of our population living here. One of the things that makes Auckland so special is our vibrant melting pot of cultures. This diversity reflected in our cuisine, festivals, art, music, and cultures. From the first Mãori waka (canoes) and colonial ships, Auckland has attracted people of many cultures from far and wide. By the 1890s, the city had a cosmopolitan flavour with dozens of languages heard in the bustling streets and new inhabitants from Europe, China and India. This theme continued throughout the 20th century, particularly in the 1950s when the population was boosted by the post-World War II ‘baby boom’ and many European immigrants from Hungary, Holland and Yugoslavia, later arrived bringing Auckland even more diversity.

Today we want to take you on tour of this vibrant region and expose you to some of our fantastic scenery and cultures whilst we follow

the steps on some of our early pioneers.

Auckland’s Ultimate Wine Tour (6.5hrs) New Zealand wines have become world acclaimed so it only fitting for you to sample some of Auckland’s best. Auckland is a large and diverse wine region, boasting sub-tropical climate with around 100 vineyards and wineries and home to some of New Zealand’s oldest established vineyards, planted back in 1819. We’ll showcase three in particular today followed by a late lunch at one of the best in the region.

You will start your day when we collect you from your ship then travel along the harbour edge to Mission Bay, a historical area of inner city Auckland. From here we will visit Parnell, an upmarket suburb full of charm and character. Then it’s out west we go to start the sampling for the day. First stop is Matua Valley Wines with New Zealand’s first Sauvignon Blanc. Matua in Maori means “Head of the family” or leader so thought it only fitting to begin here with three whites, then 3 reds to sample. Maybe add a few NZ cheeses to complement each one. This takes about an hour.

Next stop is Kumeu River for its outstanding Chardonnay’s, followed closely by Soljans Estate for a wine tour before tasting begins. This winery has won many accolades over the years but I have to say their Legacy Méthode Traditionnelle 2009 is outstanding. Lunch is to follow in their award winning café/ restaurant. Wine Access magazine has recommended them as one of the top 20 Winery Restaurants in the World. Winner of 2014 Beef & Lamb Excellence Award and cater well to people with food allergies and or intolerances.

If time permits and you have the desire we can call into Hallertau, a local brewer of Boutique beers for a round of sampling before we travel back into the city. We recommend you take time at the end of the journey to experience Auckland’s famous landmark and tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere – the Sky Tower, however this is optional. The Sky Tower is only two blocks from your cruise ship .

Auckland to Waitomo Caves & Hobbiton Movie Set (10.5 hrs)Two of the most visited attractions in New Zealand can be accomplished in one day, so climb aboard and let’s go. Depart Auckland and travel south, with your first destination being Waitomo Caves – en-route you pass through the Market Garden area of south Auckland, country townships, and lush Waikato farmland. Following the mighty Waikato River which boasts a number of New Zealand’s hydro power plants along its pathway from Taupo to the Waikato Heads. Passing through Ngaruawahia the home to our Maori King before heading west through more dairy farmland, passing through Otorohanga before arriving at Waitomo, the caving centre of NZ. Waitomo translated in Maori means Wai = water and Tomo = a hole in the ground. Your cave adventure awaits you – the world renowned Glow-worm cave with its Cathedral Cave and magical boat ride under glow-worm lights.

Today is a very full day so it time for a quick lunch before heading off to Hobbiton Movie Set. Once on set you embark on a 2 hour guided tour of the movie set used for the films of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Stand under the party tree, walk past the Hobbit holes, imagine yourself amongst the characters. Nestled deep in the rolling hills of the Waikato, this location was chosen for its unblemished landscape. Bilbo Baggins was no typical hobbit and here you will understand why.

Left in its original state this is a memory making tour.
