3rd Annual Puzzle Contest Awarding CeremonyBy Abdulkasim Akhmedov (Mathematics Teacher)

Dear parents, students and all readers!!!

As most of you know, Zaman International High-School Mathematics Department organized the 3rd Annual Puzzle Contest which consists of 3 different levels A (Grade 11&12), B (Grade 9&10) and C (Grade 7&8) and it took place on 11th of December 2013. This contest has al-ready taken a special spot in Zaman High-School academic calendar as a Traditional Annual Event which involves all the students in this campus. It consists of 20 IQ questions which are designed to challenge our students intelligence under test conditions and success of these stu-dents in adapting to a specific situation. (Intelligence is the capacity to learn and understand). Furthermore, this IQ test measures students abilities of different types such as verbal, math-ematical, spatial-visual and reasoning skills.

It is now becoming increasingly recognized that there are many different types of intelligence and that a high measured IQ, although desirable, is not the only key to success in life. Other characteristics, such as outstanding artistic, creative or practical skills, especially if combined with personal characteristics such as ambition, good temperament and compassion, could re-sult in an outstanding level of success despite a low measured IQ. It is because of this, in recent years, CQ (Creative Quotient) and EQ (Emotional Quotient), to name just two examples, have come to be regarded as equally important as, or even more important than, IQ measurement. Here, I also would like to point out that having a high IQ does not mean that one has a good memory. A good memory is yet another type of intelligence, and could result in high academic success despite a low measured IQ test score.

Therefore, this puzzle contest gives our students the opportunity to identify their own strengths and weakness and thus enable them to build on their strength and work at improving their per-formance in areas of weakness.

Moreover, they become familiar with more different types of IQ questions and increase their level and experience in solving them.

3rd Annual Puzzle Contest Awarding CeremonyA few days later after the contest, we posted all the results of our students and organized a spe-cial 3rd Annual Puzzle Contest Awarding Ceremony on 24th of December 2013. All parents, students and Zaman High-School staff were invited to this ceremony to eye-witness the victo-ry and success of the winners of the contest and share their happiness and excitement together. With a great honor, I would like to announce that we, ZIS Mathematics Department, are plan-ning, a similar but bigger in scale, to organize a IQ Puzzle contest in Phnom Penh wide which is open to all middle-school and high-school students in Phnom Penh city.

Last but certainly not least, I would like to thank to our school principal, Mr. Mustafa Guler who supported us financially and morally and gave us a huge motivation to organize this event. And, special thanks to all of our mathematics teachers for their great support and contribution and all other teachers who made a contribution of any size to this event.

    Studying AbroadStudying Abroad

    By Manith Chuon 12F

NITH: In October 2012, I had decided to study abroad and the country that I chose was Australia. The reason that I chose Australia was because the course that I was interested was offered by a college in New South Wales called Le Cordon Bleu. As soon as I assured and had made my decision, I sought for an agent at IDP in Phnom Penh for help-ing me with my application; I applied for Bachelor of Business (International Hotel Management). The process took almost 3 months to be completed and costed me USD250 for the service. There were a lot of circumstances for applying to study abroad. Somehow, the problem can vary. The main prob-lem that I had faced was being under-age. I was not allowed to live in Austra-lia until I turned 18 and I was to be 3 months away to my 18th birthday on the commencement day. Therefore, my father decided to come to Australia with me as my guardian. After receiving an offer letter from the college, I start-ed lodging my visa application to the

Australian Embassy and got charged for about USD550. I had to prove my finan-cial ability that would cover my tuition fees for 3 years, living costs in Austra-lia and a secure seat from school. That was important for the Australian im-migration in order to obtain my visa. And to pass the health test was a must. I currently studying at Le Cordon bleu and it is my second semester of the first year. My first semester was on cam-pus for 6 months and I had 8 subjects. The subjects were really hard because it required academic skills. I also had practical classes such as kitchen and restaurant services class which I had to work long hours in kitchen as well as the restaurant inside the college. In my second semester I have to complete a profession experience in any organisa-tion with a minimum of 600 hours of work before I could go to year 2. I really enjoy my course because I have learnt a lot about hospitality and have gained a lot of experience in that industry.

When it comes to social engagement, we can say that volunteer work plays an important role. In recent years, teenagers have found it more enjoyable and helpful to be involved in society

movements and government groups that always come up with brilliant ideas and projects for holding events in an entertaining way. These events help to enrich our society and raise it to a higher level of standards. More than this, joining these kinds of events helps students to be

    become great leaders as well.

On a chilly serene Sunday last week, numerous student volunteers started to gather together in front of Zaman School. Meanwhile, an organizer team was working hard to supply stu-

A TEACHERBy Sultan Sengun (Chemistry Teacher)

When God wanted to bless you, He gave you a teacher. He is the ultimate gift of God. A teach-er is noble, lovable and humble. He gives and knows only to give. A teacher is a visionary, a seer, a sage, a saint. He is down to earth. He is profound. He is great. He is wonderful. He is joy. He is the ultimate. A teacher is not ordinary, because he can make you extraordinary. He understands you like no one else does. He comes into your life to change the way you look at life. You are no more the same again. Your understanding of things change, your knowledge grows, you grow. Life will never be the same again for you. A teacher is active. Yet he is detached. He teaches, inspires and guides. He transforms. He gives you a purpose in life. He teaches you not only on the platform and through lectures, but he leads by example. He means what he says. He is experienced. He practices what he preaches. He is very knowledgeable. He is the answer to every question. He is the solution to every problem. A teacher can create and he can also destroy. He builds a nation, a society and also an indi-vidual. He can do what politicians, economists and businessmen cannot. He forms systems, creates processes and gives an order to everything around himself. He knows how to teach, manage and lead. He is an institution by himself. He is everywhere. He is everything. A teacher never differentiates between students. He teaches students, as per the level of their under-standing. Whenever a student needs a teacher, he will come. He is always there. In every age, era, time and place the teacher is the same. A teacher seems different for different people. But he is the same life principle expressed in different forms.

A TEACHER He is a master, a Guru, a friend, a philosopher and a guide. He is silent. He is silence. He is beyond. He is perfect. He is perfection. He can unlock treasures within your heart. He gives you insight into the secrets of the universe.

You can pay anyone, but you can never repay your debt to your teacher. A teacher gives ev-erything to you. Finally, a teacher makes you another teacher.

Consequently, my teacher made me another teacher, so I am here and I am here with all of you. On the Teachers Day, I understood once again how a marvelous job I have chosen. I am thankful to all of my teachers who educated and manipulated me to come here. Moreover, I would like to thank our principle Mr. Mustafa Guler, to other vice principals and to my lovely students who celebrated our Teachers Day with delicious cakes and mugs which have Zaman logos. Thanks a lot... I am so glad to be here, to teach, to breathe together and to be at Zaman International School.

Water is very important for our lives. On one meaningful morning, our class (9E) went dis-cover how water is cleaned.

Our journey started at 8 o`clock. We went to the water factory by our school bus. On the way, we talked and laughed a lot, because we were so excited. We took some pictures with our homeroom teacher. When we arrived, my eyes caught an amazing bottle clean-ing machine. As I listened to the manager of the company, I realized that water has to be cleaned in many steps like UV, ozone and more before being poured into the cleaned bottles. While I was listening, I could see my friends taking notes.

After seeing all the steps, our teacher gave the factory`s owner a Turkish Delight, school brochures and the school magazine. We also received traditional Taiwanese food as a gift from the company owner. Afterwards, went to school.

It was just an idea at the beginning whether to fund a glee club in our school or not. Since most of the people think that music is just sing-ing or having a nice voice, this discouraged me as a music teacher to start this journey for the very first time in Zamans history. How-ever, what made me decide to open this club was the desire of students to learn more about music and music theory as I have recognized during music classes. When it was just a pos-sibility in my mind, things got clearer by the time we started our vocal and theory classes. Out of 40 candidates who were willing to join to the club, 18 students were chosen to join us after an audition. These 18 students became my inspiration in every step that I took about music. We decorated and cleaned our room together when most of them did not even clean their own room in their homes. It was fun for all of us to create our own room. That is what made us to feel that music room is our room that opens its door to the music world. I feel lucky since these young ladies and gentlemen are being patient for singing and it encourages me more when they spend even their weekends to learn better. As a next step, we are all excited to have our upcoming classical music concert for our school. I am sure, our club can do it, and these talented students can success to have a choir as a first in their lifetime!

On a regular saturday, some of the members of our club and Ms. Sibel met in the re-paint-ed music room and we started cleaning up and tidying up everything we can in the music room. It was not tiring; it was very fun since we got to bond with each other while doing something useful for our school and music room. We also listened music while clean-ing and I can tell you that it was a very great and special moment of mine What is more is that joining Glee Club is very exciting for me. I had a chance to participate in something unique and fun as well as fulfilling. To those who think that Glee Club was about singing, I am sorry to say that it only is not so because in Glee Club, we do vocal exercises, study the music theories, and lots more activities that we enjoy doing with our teachers. Hav-ing the opportunity to study with Ms. Sibel, Mr. Srornos and our vocal teacher is very special and interestingI hope to have even more greater times in Glee Club

    By Johnny Chung 10A

This year, our school has opened Glee Club which people who like music and music the-ory can join. It is a great club for those who loves to sing but has lack of music knowledge to play a musical instrument or to sing solo. As a member of this club, I find it enjoyful and fun. We usually sign classic songs that I find refreshing. We also learn about music notes which is quite helpful.I am happy to be in Glee Club.

    Cambridge learners are:

confident in working with information and ideas their own and those of others responsible for themselves, responsive to and respectful of others reflective as learners, developing their ability to learn innovative and equipped for new and future challenges engaged intellectually and socially, ready to make a difference.

What do the Cambridge learner attributes mean in practice?

The Cambridge learner attributes are necessary for a students success in the short term (at school) and the long term (in subsequent education and the workplace).

In order to perform well in Cambridge examinations students need to learn to take intellectual risks, evaluate arguments and effectively communicate and defend their ideas.

They need to understand themselves as learners, o be resourceful, o resilient and o creative.

Our qualifications are designed with the Cambridge learner attributes in mind. Assessments reward students who can engage creatively and critically with the material.

The linear nature of Cambridge qualifications means students need to understand how the course, and the academic discipline they are studying, fit together as a whole. They need to be able to make connections and apply their knowledge in new contexts.

Teachers and learners talking about how the learner attributes are relevant to their immediate concern of becoming, for example, a better physicist, historian or linguist and doing well in Cambridge examinations, is a good first step to making them meaningful.

    Developing a culture of learning

The second point to understand is that the learner attributes are about developing a culture of learning in the school that applies to the whole community, teachers and administrators as well as students. The attributes are the same for teachers and learners precisely because teachers need to exemplify them.

The power of teachers as role models cannot be overstated and the attributes will have little meaning unless teachers live by them.

Educating Todays Learners For Tomorrows WorldEducating Todays Learners For Tomorrows World Excellent teaching is the most significant factor that impacts upon both learners academic performance and the development of the Cambridge learner attributes.

Teachers need to employ a variety and balance of teaching strategies in the classroom. Ac-tive learning is not only about individual and group inquiry and project work, with which it is often associated. The critical component is that learners are actively engaged in the learn-ing process and are developing an understanding of themselves as learners.

Teaching strategies should include whole-class instruction, which can be very active pro-vided the voice of the learner as well as the teacher is heard.

Developing basic skills and an understanding of the nature of each academic discipline is essential.

Interdisciplinary understanding is very important but it needs to be based on disciplinary understanding and foundational skills, otherwise it tends towards superficial coverage and confusion.

Being able to learn from mistakes is an important academic as well as life skill, and the sys-tematic use of effective assessment for learning strategies, as well as assessment of learning, is at the heart of the process.

    Deep learning

Learners need to have the opportunity to engage deeply with some of the most powerful concepts embedded within academic disciplines.

Too often covering a curriculum overloaded with content means that engagement is super-ficial. Learners do not get the opportunity to understand the concept and apply their under-standing to new contexts.

Spending more time supporting deep learning of key concepts is an effective teaching strat-egy that helps students develop the learner attributes.

Curriculum represents much more than a group of qualifications and needs to be broad, bal-anced, coherent and consistent.

Different disciplines, for example the arts and physical education, can make a special con-tribution to the development of the learner attributes.

There is no single recipe for developing the Cambridge learner attributes. They will be nur-tured differently according to each schools culture and vision. Ultimately, they are a set of guiding principles to help Cambridge schools build a curriculum that allows learners to fulfil their potential and participate effectively in the modern international world.

This year, 2013, Zaman International School has hosted various about of interactive competi-tions, one being the Typing Competition. The Typing Competition took place in the computer lab after lunch. I was very happy and numb, for some reason, when I heard that I got First Place in the girls side. To be honest, its nerve-wracking to be called upstage and be expected to say something encourages or something worth peoples time listening too. Unfortunately, I was never good with public speaking.

My winning the Typing Competition was all thanks to endless hours on the computer. Ive been using the computer almost non-stop ever since I was a kid. Thats pretty unhealthy I know. I never intended to practice my typing or anything; I was always absorbed in the world wide web and its possibilities, its opportunities, its vastness, to care. Now Im grateful for all the time I spent on the computer, even if it can be a double edged sword. And thank you espe-cially to my classmates for cheering me on when I was called upstage; it gave me courage to be in front of everyone. I encourage my fellow students, friends, and classmates to be confident in whatever you do; if you ever so happen to fail, just think its another lesson to learn in order to be successful in the future.

On 05 December 2013, I was attending the Typing Competition. I was so excited about that Typing Competition, since I really inter-ested and enjoying playing typing in my free time, and also I was always wanted to com-pete with other people. After I ate my lunch, I went in front of the Computer lab immedi-ately. Therere many students waiting there. I felt nervous. I thought to myself, can I be able to win all of those guys?? But my other mind said that just try your best and you will be fine. At 12:35, the competition start. I went in com-puter lab with my friends. I felt very nervous. I sat in front of the computer next to my friends. I thought to myself once again, let make this competition get fun. So, Mr. Maksat just tell which article we are going to open. Then the competition start, I just went straight typing without even looking at any other people do-ing. I used my full speed. But I still felt that someone would have done better than me, then I gone nervous and type even faster. During that time, the things that I look at is only the screen of the computer. After 5 min, the tim-er stopped. Everyone just stare at their result.

Teachers went on collecting the data. After finish, teacher said to type for the second round. I felt more nervous, since I have used my full speed in the first half, I thought that I would have not type like the first round again. But I try my best anyway. My speed for the second round is 67 WPM. Then I left the room and waiting for the result announce-ment. On Friday, during the flag ceremony, I felt nervous once again. But I patiently wait-ing for the announcement. Mr. Maksat an-nounce from 3rd place to 1st place. I only try to listen to my name, I didnt pay attention to any other name. So Mr. Maksat announce, 3rd is not me, 2nd is not me also. My heart just stop beating for a second. I thought to myself again, that I wont win this compe-tition. But the other mind said you did try your best though. Then 1st place been an-nounce, I stare at everyone. My mind just went crazy. I cant believe it, I just won the competition. I went up to the stage with a smile on my face. I felt very satisfy, after all those years that I been training how to type. I am very thankful to the Computer Depart-ment that organized this competition. I hope we can do it again next year.

    Cooking and Turkish Singing Club

    By Phearnique Ly 11F

Our Turkish Singing and Cooking club is very fun enjoyable and also educational. We learn Turkish song along with some Turkish words that help improve our Turkish language skill. In addition, we also learn some recipe and help with some of the cooking also. In the past weeks, we learn a song and how to cook Lahmacun (known as Turkish pizza), Zebra cake and Pizza. We help our teacher with the cooking while learning the recipe and get to taste it also. We really enjoy the cooking class. We decided to join this club because we want to learn and improve our cooking skill and we also want to learn more about Turkeys culture through this club. We really enjoy learning in this club and we are looking forward for more things well learn throughout the school year.

Cooking and Turkish Singing ClubBy Sam Monirath Phann 11E

From our perspective, cooking class is a nice way to relax. Through this, it strengthens our bond between friends and helps to reduce stress from studying. Moreover, during cooking class. We can get the chance to try with new and unique ingredients or come up with new dishes.

    By Sopheakreasey Sung 10F

I think Cooking Club is fun. I find it very useful for girls, because we learn how to cook vari-ous foods. I chose the club and asked my parents, they did like my choice. Saying that, since I am a girl, I need to acquire cooking skills. We were all excited on that very first day of the club, when the teacher demonstrated a Zebra cake. We always take notes of each menu, so we can practice at home. It gives us pleasure to participate this activity and yet we enjoy eating. So far we cooked: Zebra Cake, Spring Rolls, Chocolate Cake, Blueberry Muffins and Italian Pizza. It is so good that school provided such a valuable activity for GIRLS. THANKS..

In Turkish Culture Club categories, we have singing, cooking, and handcraft. We have 11 members in our club. Our homeroom teacher, Mrs. Zuhal, is the one who teaches us this kind of activities.

I join her club and it was very fun. I like cooking activity the most because its good for the future and I also get to learn more about the Turkish cultural food.

    By Lyfang Srunphy 9F

Turkish Culture Club is not any ordinary club. In the club we learned about Turkish culture. We learned how to sing, cooking, handcraft. And I like cooking the most. We make pizza and cake. I know it would be delicious thanks to my homeroom teacher; Abla and our 10 members have put our heart in it. Whenever we have activity, we always thought that this would be very fun. It was fun, through. And we wanted to do it again because we want to learn more about Turkish culture.

    11A s Splendid Trip

    By 11A

The day we have been waiting for had come. It was a brilliant day with a cloud-less sky. We were gathering near the school at 7 a.m., ready to step on to the beach. The first trip of the year was ex-pected to be a wonderful trip. We were singing and playing guitar along the way. Five hours on the bus was like the blink of an eye and soon we arrived at our des-tination. When we stepped out of the hot, stuffy bus onto the bright, dazzling beach, we were really excited. We had an awesome lunch near the beach with our friends and teachers. Everyones smile showed that they were happy with this trip. We spent the whole afternoon swimming and playing handball. I guess thiats was the best part of our trip. At night, there was a small barbecue par-

ty on the beach prepared by our teach-ers to celebrate our friends birthday. We laughed, we chatted and we sang, all of which were great moments that were cap-tured in our mind. We came back to the hotel at 9 p.m. and slept tight.

The second day of our trip was even bet-ter. We visited the beautiful snake house. That gave us a chance to take photos with snakes. While we were there we had a de-licious lunch. We also were invited to have a sumptuous dinner at one of our friends houses. Later that night there was a nice moment when we played guitar and sang under the dark sky with sparkling stars.

Two nights had passed when Teacher said Its time to go home. We packed our things and said good bye to the beach. It was the greatest trip Ive ever taken and it will never be forgotten.

Breakfast At Teachers House!By Vannara Lim 8A

On a holiday, our homeroom teacher, Mr. Mehmet, planned a special activity for us. It was

visiting his apartment. We were super excited when we heard what the activity was. In the

next day, everyone arrived at school at eight, when seeing that everyone came, we decided

to call over some of transportation services without hesitation. About five or eight minutes

later of guessing where T. Mehmets apartment could be, we finally arrived at a comfortable

looking apartment. Everyone went inside, signed in, and followed T. Mehmet to his room

with excitement. Entering the apartment room was the craziest moment of all time. We were

really surprised, the room looked kind of small but it feels cozier and much better compared

to the old apartment room for an unknown reason. After settling down, we went to the

kitchen and started to prepare the breakfast. Everyone had their own duties. For instance,

some were slicing the tomatoes, some were cooking the eggs, and some were preparing the eating station.

Breakfast At Teachers House! In 30 minutes of slicing and frying we finally finished our master piece (breakfast). We formed

a circle around the eating station and started to eat like cavemen. All the foods were gone in a

short period of time, and we were already too full to eat more. Everyone started to clean up

and then we chilled out when its finished. I decided to do the honor of washing the dishes.

After washing the dishes, I decided to examine every single of them again and felt proud of

myself for cleaning every single one. We talked about things like school, life, technologies and

some other random things for the rest of the morning. At ten thirty we decided to head back

    to school.

It was a really fun activity for me. Im sure everyone including T. Mehmet enjoyed this activity.

I still feel proud of myself for washing all the dishes.

The next morning we didnt feel tired and played games in the morning. But when our teacher came in, we knew what he was going to say so we packed our bags and got ready to leave. We werent really happy at that time but we did enjoy the night. I think it was awesome to spent time with my classmates and have fun with my teachers.

8B Class Birthday PartyBy Panhabots Narin 8B

It was my class birthday with my teacher Mr. Mehmet.

We decided that we went to the dormitory to celebrate our birthdays. Our teacher said hes going to buy a cake which had everyones names and birth dates on it. We

designed our own birthday T-shirts. Some of my friends volunteered to design the T-shirts. So I started to pack all of my stuffs and clothes to head to dor-

mitory. After my teacher had printed all the permission papers, everyone asked their parents. 20 of my friends joined.

We decided to set off after school at around 12.00. But my teacher said that we could go home for the preparations. He also said that we had to be at school before 2 p.m. So, I went home to have lunch. Then, I changed my clothes and finally I was ready for the trip. It was almost 2, so my mom started to rush up. I arrived just in time before the bus left. I guess I was the last person who came to the meeting point.

Most of my friends didnt go home. Instead, they went to the malls by tuk-tuk and had lunch there. Everyone met at school at 2 p.m. and headed

to dorm. When we arrived, my teacher had already bought the cake and my friends had brought the T-shirts as well. Everyone wore the T-shirts and the cel-

ebration began. Everyone had their own slice of cake with their names and birth dates on their slices. We really enjoyed our cake. Thank you teacher for doing the best class

    birthday ever.

On Friday, 29 November 2013. It was a wonderful Friday, my class had an activity to stay at New Dormitory. We studied many hours from the morning till the evening, finally it ended at 3:15 in the evening and we all had fun together, then we en-tered the computer lap for playing counter strike. We enjoyed playing this game as groups until 4. At 4 oclock we went to dormitory by our school bus. After a half hour the bus arrived at dormitory, it made us excited again and we started to swim together in the swimming pool untill 7 oclock. Half an hour later, the school bus brought us to KFC Riverside for our din-ner. It was a sumptuous dinner because we were very hungry and exhausted from swimming activity and we couldnt wait to eat our dinner. At 8:30 p.m. we left KFC for playing football at school. It was a happy time because we spent our time with each other and there was a lot of fun during the played. We played as groups, there was a small tournament between our class and 8B. An hour passed, we were very tired and we took a rest for some minutes before going back to dormitory. Also, we were waiting for school bus to arrived. At dormitory we spent a lot of time together for playing tennis and watching a scary movie together after we finished watching horror movie we had our snack and talking about our future, our study, and some staffs. And we went to our room and slept. It was a joyful night ever because we dont usually have this amazing time together.

Moring came, we woke up and having shower and cleaned our staffs preparing to go back to school. Before we went back to school, we also had a breakfast which was prepared by our asistance teacher Mr. Han. We really enjoyed his cooking and went straight back to school. This is one of our experience, un-forgetable time and our memory together at Dormitory.
