The Summer to Fall Transition—A Beautiful Time for Wine

The End of Summer / Beginning of Fall is always my favorite time of year. From warm days and cool nights to the changing color of leaves, the transition period is always an exciting and fun time all around. That shift translates through so many of our lives and activities as work ramps up, kids are back to school, holidays/entertaining begin to come into play and of course drinking habits begin to shift into more heartier wines for the impending cold.

That being said, I have HIGHJACKED the Zachys Gazette and loaded it up with as much Summer to Fall selections that I can possibly imagine. From new arrivals, to perennial favorites this issue of the Zachys Gazette dives deep into France and the USA.

The beginning of Fall is a crucial time for all of us as we firm up plans for the Holiday/Winter Season. From the Wine Cellar (warehouse) perspective we are looking to move out all the “Summer Time Wines” and load-up on the “Winter Time Wines” over the next couple of months. Making this (in my opinion), the most exciting time for Wine. We have the best of both worlds all available at one time. Clean, crisp racy whites to rich powerful hearty reads are all readily available. Plus this is the period of New Arrivals, especially from Europe and the West Coast. September into October historically marks the largest intake of new wines and I along with the team have been working ahead this August to make sure that this Gazette is loaded with a TON of new wines!

This is absolutely a Beautiful Time for Wine and an excellent way to refresh your cellar no matter how large of small.

Jeremy Noye

1990 Perfection – Yes We Have These Beauties In-Stock!

1990 Bubbles | BTL $ SALE $

Henriot Cuvee de Enchanteleurs Brut(94WS) (1.5L) {#330816} ................................... 500.00 395.00“The texture lends elegance and the acidity provides structure, setting the stage for opulent flavors of coffee, roasted almond, citrus and vanilla. Fine intensity and balance, with a long finish. It’s reaching its peak and should hold there for some years...94.” WS 11/05.

Dom Perignon (98WA) {#60509} .......................... 395.00 295.00“Medium lemon-straw colour. Intensely fragrant nose with aromas of jasmine, cinnamon buttered toast, stewed apples and preserved ginger. Concentrated honey-nut, warm apple tart and spice flavours fill the mouth giving ample flesh to the firm, fine structure. The bubbles are still remarkably frisky and, in harmony with the crisp backbone of acid, make for a relatively youthful, elegant and exquisitely balanced wine. Very long finish...” WA 12/08.

1996 is a LEGENDARY Champagne Vintage with Good Reason.

The wines are excellent!

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate rated the entire vintage the highest rating they have ever given a Champagne vintage at 97 points.Wine Spectator rated the vintage 96 points, tying it for the second highest rated vintage for Champagne from Wine Spectator.

This combined with the sheer demand that was seen for the 1996 vintage has cemented 1996 as one of Champagne’s most sought after and Legendary vintages. That being said…WE cannot believe we still have these beauties to offer!

We love these wines for their complexity and the fact that the wine just needs time in the bottle to come around. Yes, we like aged Champagne and this is one that needs time to show its true character and potential, which these beauties are NOW doing!

Dom Ruinart Rosé 1996 (93WA) | BTL $ SALE $

“Although Ruinart is best known for their vintage Blanc de Blancs, the Rose is perhaps even more fascinating, particularly after a few years in bottle, which in important vintages allows for the Pinot Noir to speak with great eloquence...” Antonio Galloni, the Wine Advocate 12/08.

750ml {#142456} .................................................... 400.00 225.00

1.5L {#341181} ....................................................... 800.00 475.00“...dense, shut-down wine that needs serious time in the cellar to come together. With additional bottle age, the Pinot character should emerge, as it almost always does. For now, this remains a structured Rosé that only occasionally reveals the brilliance that it appears capable of, yet all of the ingredients are present for the 1996 to emerge as a brilliant Dom Ruinart Rosé...93.” WA 12/08.

Dom Perignon | BTL $ SALE $

“...nothing could have prepared me for the Champagnes I tasted recently with Chef de Caves Richard Geoffroy...These wines are nothing short of magnifi cent.” Antonio Galloni, the Wine Advocate 3/10.

Oenotheque 1996 (99WE/97WA) {#338233} ........ 385.00 345.00 Original cases of three available

“A magnificent Champagne, one that is light, delicate, yet packed with character. It is beautifully balanced, with a bone-dry character, just softened by the toastiness that is developing. Expect this to age for many years...99.” WE 12/10.

“...offers up layers of pastry, lemon, smoke and toastiness. At first deceptively understated, the wine turns positively explosive and layered on the palate, showing remarkable tension, elegance and power, all wrapped around a seriously intense frame. The balance between fruit and acidity is awesome. This is a marvelous DP OEeno...97.” WA 3/10.

Also don’t miss the current release—the 2002 DP with a 96 point Rating may just be the second coming of the 1996!

Dom Perignon 2002 (96WA) {#336902} ................ 225.00 175.00“...at first intensely floral, with perfumed jasmine that dominates the bouquet. With time in the glass the wine gains richness as the flavors turn decidedly riper and almost tropical. Ripe apricots, passion fruit and peaches emerge from this flashy, opulent Dom Perignon. The wine’s volume makes it approachable today, but readers in search of more complexity will want to cellar this for at least a few years to allow for some of the baby fat to drop off...96.” WA 3/10.

“ Champagne’s Servants Join the Masters” Eric Asimov, NYT

Eric Asimov of the New York Times in mid-July published an AMAZING piece on the key producers of Champagne sub-region the AUBE. If you are a Champagne lover and into understanding the geography and TERRIOR of Champagne this is a must read article. Not to mention the article highlighted eight of the “RISING STARS” in Champagne today.

Amongst those producers profiled was Cedric Bouchard whose Champagnes have achieved Cult status in the Wine Advocate and here in Zachys, selling out almost immediately upon arrival.

However, the lead off producer in Mr. Asimov’s article is another producer that we have just started to work with in the last 18 months. DOSNON & LEPAGE has been one of those selfish secrets of ours. The wines are OUTSTANDING and frankly became our little guilty pleasure as our first allotment was a mere 36 bottles of each cuvee.

That is no longer the case as we have just received a healthy chunk of these highly sought after Champagnes. Here are excerpts from Eric Asimov’s article:

“By contrast, many Aube producers are taking their cues instead from Burgundy, with its emphasis on farming and on being able to trace terroir through the wines. Rather than the hushed pop of the cork and the silken rush of bubbles, these Champagnes suggest soil on the boots and dirt under the fi ngernails. …

Mr. Dosnon studied viticulture and enology in Beaune, the heart of Burgundy, and he brings a Burgundian passion for the land to his work. Strolling through a hillside vineyard in the hamlet of Avirey-Lingey, about 25 miles southeast of Troyes, one parcel among 17 acres or so that they farm, I noticed another similarity to Burgundy, tiny fossilized seashells in the earth, like those often seen in the vineyards of Chablis...

“The soil is also interesting for pinot noir,” Mr. Dosnon said. “There’s a lot of volume and complexity.”

The Dosnon & Lepage Champagnes are superb, especially the 100 percent pinot noir Récolte Noire, powerful yet graceful, wonderfully fresh and aromatic, and a blanc de blancs, Récolte Blanche, a wine of fi nesse and nuance, with savory, focused fl oral and mineral fl avors...

DOSNON & LEPAGE Superb, elegant yet intense” Eric Asimov, the Pour, the New York Times 6/12/11.

100 Point Champagne! | BTL $ SALE $

Louis Roederer Cristal2002 (100W&S) {#153701} ................................ 295.00 235.00“If a wine could ever make you want to pull the top down on your ‘68 Ferrari convertible, rip off the rearview mirror and take off, this is it. It has a different kind of energy than the ‘02 Cristal Rosé, which is more ethereal, like strawberries at the right hand of some ancient Gallic god. This is more insolent, brash, earth bound. All the scents and flavors seem to emanate from limestone, as does the acidity, which hits at the front of the mouth and powers through the wine with the kind of solar energy that lifts mist off the white chalk on a cool morning in Cramant. The wine goes on for miles. It’s already irresistible, and will only improve with ten, 20, 30 and 40 years of age...100.” W&S 12/09.

“ Anselme Selosse is one of Champagne’s most iconic fi gures.” Antonio Galloni the Wine Advocate 12/10

When it comes to Champagne there are so many choices. Large house, small houses. Grower Champagne to Grand Marques.

But then there are the wines of Jacques Selosse Champagne!

Today at the helm is Anselme Selosse who is rightfully considered “one of Champagne’s most iconic fi gures.”

Anselme has set out to redefine Champagne and Champagne styles. By taking a more of a Grand Cru Burgundy still wine approach and mixing in Solera reserves and systems, Anselme Selosse is producing Champagne that is the most unique in the world today. Admired and emulated by many the Champagnes of Selosse are unparalleled as no one has yet to come close to produce a wine of striking similarity.

Just look at some of the comments that Antonio Galloni has made regarding this fantastic set of Champagne:

• The Initial is the entry-level wine at Selosse, but is the equivalent to most producers’ tete de cuvee.

• The NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Substance remains one of the most exotic, intriguing wines being made in the region today.

• Readers who take the time to explore Substance will be rewarded with one of the great drinking experiences in the world of wine.

• All things mineral add complexity to an expression of Chardonnay that is ripe, vinous and intense, in a style that pushes the envelope for what is possible in Champagne

Unknown Pomerol that is until Now...

This past Spring, I was able to taste a sample of this little Pomerol estate and was very impressed. The quality was tremendous and the wine was very alluring. Let’s just say it has a lot going on and going for it.

Based on the conversation I was having with the negociants, I was expecting this wine to be in that $85 range when it came out. Thankfully I was wrong!

At $54.99 this is one of those great steals in Pomerol, especially in a wine that Robert Parker makes a comparison to the tiny producers and extremely expensive sought after Le Pin!

This is bound to be one of the buys of the Vintage and the Vintage that Le Moulin Pomerol becomes a very recognizable name.

*Le Moulin Pomerol 2010 (92-94WA/92-95WS) {#346264} .....54.99 “...Le Moulin is a somewhat under the radar Pomerol that I have always found to have a kinship to Le Pin, if only because of its exuberant exoticism...layers of fruitcake, spice box, plum, black currant and cherry characteristics. Medium to full-bodied, deep and already irresistible...a big, loaded Pomerol...92-94.” WA 5/11.

“Sleek and restrained, with a gorgeous mouthfeel, as silky tannins are already lengthy, carrying the spice, Linzer Torte, crushed cherry and red currant fruit...classy...92-95.” WS 5/11.

Two of the Best 2010 Values...93-94 Points and Starting at $23.95!

Here we go!

These two sister properties in St Emilion and Pomerol had actually caught our attention with the 2007 Vintage when one of our close negociants presented the wines to us. Needless to say if the 2007s caught our attention and made us start to follow the wine they had to be very good for the money.

And they ARE!

We’ve kept a watchful eye on the progress at these two estates and have just been waiting for the right Vintage to really introduce them to all of you.

2010 is that Vintage!

We completely agree with James Suckling on these wines. They are: “A beauty” and “So attractive.”

These are wines of top quality that really deliver for the money. Frankly, even in the blockbuster 2009 Vintage there were not many if any St Emilion Grand Cru announced under $25 with a 93-94 rating. Plus a Pomerol under $35 with a 93-94 rating?!

The quality, affordability and sheer enjoyment these wines represent are what have made us very big proponents of these two estates!

Lafi te with-out the Price Tag...

As a Bordeaux wine lover you know that Lafite Rothschild is not only one of the greatest estates in Bordeaux but also the hottest property on the market today. The result, the prices have jumped and jumped. Finding the wine has become harder and harder.

But thankfully the team at Lafite have not only kept the improvements in the cellar and vineyards at Lafite but also spread them out to all the other properties that Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) own. This includes the Pauillac property Duhart Milon that is not very far away from Lafite Rothschild. The quality and depth of wine now being produced at Duhart Milon is on par with or greater than all the other classified wines in the commune. Plus, you get that Lafite refinement and style in a wine that is a mere fraction of the price of Lafite!

Duhart Milon may not be the legendary Lafite but for the price, quality and that Lafite style...Duhart Milon is the buy from the Domaines Barons de Rothschild stable!

Chateau Margaux— the Wine of the 2010 Vintage?

Chateau Margaux just maybe the Wine of the 2010 Vintage!!!

The 2010 Vintage has certainly set many records with the latest announcements out of Bordeaux.

That is for sure. From record scores to impressively age-worthy wines and of course record prices; the 2010 Vintage is one for the history books.

In that book, Chateau Margaux is going to be one of the big names and big mentions. It is destined to be one of those highly sought after auction legends that people will be hunting down for years to come.

And yes we still have some to offer you! In addition to the above mentioned records, the one thing that was consistent from all the First Growths and Top Chateaux (besides Margaux) was the dramatic decrease in allocations. Many wines were cut down by 30% with some even as drastic as 60% less. This has resulted in most of all the First Growths and hard to find Chateaux being sold-out already. Long before we can even put on the finishing touches of our complete comprehensive 2010 Bordeaux offer.

So with that being said, I wanted to make sure our loyal clients like yourself still had a chance to reserve your Chateau Margaux before it runs out too.

The 2010 Margaux is a legend in the making that already has that perfect score...100 points from James Suckling.

Reserve your Margaux today before it is too late.

Robert Parker’s Sleepers of the Vintage, Stunning Efforts and Wine for Serious Bordeaux Afi cionados!

Our “Sleepers of the Vintage!”

This past Spring, Robert Parker released his final 2008 Bordeaux tasting notes and scores. All in all, 2008 is a very solid Vintage that has turned out some exceptional wines.

The plus side as Robert Parker pointed out is that 2008 is an exceptional “Value” Vintage! A Vintage full of great wines, with strong distinction and frankly much more aggressive pricing than the 2009s.

These wines are just starting to hit the United States and now is the best time to stock up on some of these tremendous wines before it is too late.

With prices on the 2008s low in comparison to 2009s these wines are going to fly out of here once they land and getting more stock out of Bordeaux with the current exchange and current market value will only mean these wines will be much more expensive, if not doubled.

“This vintage came out at low prices and the top wines have soared in value. However, most 2008s remain somewhat forgotten and under-valued vis á vis the two subsequent vintages. These are classic and outstanding wines that represent excellent value.” Robert Parker, the Wine Advocate 5/11.

Robert Parker has his list of “Sleepers of the Vintage” and so do we. Our head buyer Jeremy Noye sat down with Bordeaux specialist Alex Javadi and Zachys President Jeff Zacharia to come up with our list of 2008s that we feel are the True Sleepers of the Vintage.

Bordeaux

“2008 is an exceptionally strong vintage in Pomerol and St.-Emilion as well as Graves. The Médocs are more mixed, but as the following tasting notes indicate, there are some top wines in this vintage even though they may not hit the high marks of the sumptuous 2009s or massive 2010s...”

Robert Parker, the Wine Advocate 5/11.

Malescot St Exupery 2008 (93WA) {#164414} ....... 70.00 55.00“2008: An amazing success in this vintage, the dark ruby/purple-hued 2008 reveals its noble terroir in its complex aromatics of spring flowers and burning embers/charcoal. A medium to full-bodied mouthfeel displaying no hard edges and a seamless integration of acidity, tannin, alcohol and wood result in an approachable, already evolved wine that can be drunk now or cellared for 15+ years...93.” WA 5/11.

Chateau Malescot St Exupery is hands down the Margaux estate that any serious Margaux Fan or Bordeaux Lover should be watching.

In our opinion, Malescot St Exupery is the equivalent to Pauillac’s Pontet Canet or even Lynch Bages. This property has improved tremendously over the years, much like Lynch Bages and Pontet Canet, it is turning out some of the top wines of Margaux and Bordeaux year after year.

Frankly, we believe it is safe to say that Malescot is also turning out wines of First Growth and Super-Second quality Vintage after Vintage.

Just look at this tremendous track record:

Vintage Score Price

2010 94-96WA/93-96WS $105.00

2009 97-100WS/95-97WA $125.00

2008 93WA/90-93WS $55.00

2007 90WS $68.00

2006 92WS/91+WA $65.00

2005 97WA/97WS $180.00

And in the 2008 Vintage, Malescot is clearly in the Top Wines for Margaux of the Vintage and honestly is the deal of the pack!

Wine Score Price

Chateau Margaux 94WA/91WS $700.00+

Palmer 94WA/91WS $180.00+

Malescot St Exupery 93WA/90-93WS $55.00

Lascombes 93WA $80.00

When announced, the 2008 Vintage represented some of the greatest values we have seen coming out of Bordeaux. Today, many of those values are still around and when compared to the prices of the 2009 and 2010s the 2008s are the best deals to be had; not to mention in many cases very impressive wines.

90 Point 2009 Bordeaux for Only $12!

2010 will certainly go down in the history books as a legend considering the style of the wines, the quality and of course the massive price tags that are being associated with them. This is truly another amazing Vintage that is extremely close in quality to the already Legendary 2009 Vintage.

However, as much as the press and everyone else are talking about how expensive Bordeaux now is—there are still plenty of GREAT VALUES from the region.

Chateau Pasquet is one of these great little properties that not one of the major Press Publications had ever reviewed. That was until wine critic James Suckling, came to Zachys to film a blind tasting video of wines we felt were 90 points or more and under $20 per bottle.

We included Pasquet and needless to say we FLOORED MR. SUCKLING with the quality of this little gem that he rated 90 points!

“Smoky with a vanilla and berry character on the nose. Full bodied, with velvety tannins. Loads of berries and currants in the long fi nish...90” JamesSuckling.com 2/11.

This is what it is really all about. Good drinking wine, that is well made and affordable. Especially when it comes from a great vintage like 2009; which maybe the second coming of the legendary 1982 or even 1961!

There is no doubt that the wines of Michel Niellon have long been some of the finest from Chassagne Montrachet and frankly are widely regarded as benchmarks of the region. With that classic, richness and roundness early; the Niellon signature style has given us all great wines that are delicious upon release and age beautifully. A goal that many have tried to emulate over the years and failed at.

The 2009s are the perfect example of great drinking wines that have all the potential to “age gracefully.” John Gilman of a View from the Cellar is calling the Niellon 2009s the “second coming” of his glorious 1989s!

“Michel Niellon has made “second comings” of his superb 1989s in 2009, as the ‘09s seem to my palate like spitting images of his wines from twenty years ago...I would be very surprised if they do not age very much along the lines of the fi ne 1989 Niellon wines...”John Gilman, A View from the Cellar Issue 30.

The wines are SUPER SEDUCTIVE right now and drinking GREAT! You can’t go wrong with these and the Clos de la Maltroie is the SLEEPER of the bunch. Stock up now, as these wines will not last long.

Fine juice...” John Gilman a View from the Cellar Issue 30.

Clos St Jean 1er Cru(93NM/92BH/91+JG) {#339174} ........................ 105.00 82.00 “...has a fine base of minerality to add drive and focus on the backend of the palate. The buxom nose offers up scents of apple, pineapple, a touch of orange peel, impressive minerality and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and quite broad-shouldered, with plenty of mid-palate amplitude, good acidity and very good focus and balance on the long finish.” John Gilman a View from the Cellar Issue 30.

Les Vergers 1er Cru(93NM/92JG/91BH) {#339848} .......................... 105.00 74.00 “The younger vines in Vergers are starting to come into their own a bit and the 2009 vintage is one of the best I have tasted since this fine parcel was replanted. The nose on the ‘09 Vergers is a very pretty blend of apples, pears, lime blossoms, chalky minerality, spring flowers and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, fullish and very pure, with lovely, crisp acids, very good focus and balance...Very good juice in the making...” John Gilman a View from the Cellar Issue 30.

Clos de la Maltroie 1er Cru(91+JG/90BH/90NM) {#339844} ........................ 105.00 74.00 “...On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and generous on the attack, with a surprisingly vigorous base of minerality, good focus and cut and a most impressively long and complex finish. Again, I am really struck by how much this young wine reminds me of Monsieur Niellon’s 1989s.” John Gilman a View from the Cellar Issue 30.

One of Vosne Romanee’s Greatest Names: Gros...

The history and story of the Gros family in and around Vosne-Romanee is complicated to say the least. There are essentially four separate Gros domaines and yes they are all related to each other.

Gros Frere et Soeur, Anne Gros, A.F. Gros and Michel Gros.

The one thing that is consistent...the Gros family name in Burgundy, which is not only a historic name but a name that is synonymous with exceptional quality.

Every year the Gros wines that we carry from any of the four domaines disappear in a flash.

The one domaine that currently seems to have the best draw with you is Gros F&S.

The 2009s are excellent and live up to the rich history of the domaine and the family in general. Lock yours in today as these wines have already arrived!

From White to Red the Greatest Line-Up of 2009!?!

Domaine Joseph Faiveley has turned out quite possibly the Greatest Line-Up of 2009!

That’s right the house of Faiveley once known for being a major negociant of Burgundy and a touch too old-school in our opinion has turned out one of the 2009 Vintage’s Greatest Line-Ups.

Faiveley is not the winery of old. With the latest generation in control, Erwan Faiveley and his team have turned the Faiveley style around within three short vintages. Lucky for all of us it was just in time for the 2009 Vintage. Not only has the Faiveley house style gone through a revamp, but Faiveley is now predominately producing wines that are solely Domaine produced.

Today the Faiveley team is controlling everything from vine to wine. That control and quality improvement is showcased perfectly in the 2009 Vintage. Where Domaine Joseph Faiveley just may have turned out the finest line-up of both White and Red 2009 Burgundy. Just check-out the terrific reviews from both the International Wine Cellar and the Burghound!

“Note: all wines with the exception of the Bourgogne, the Blagny and the Santenots are from Domaine fruit.” BH 1/11.

Look What I Found--Forgotten About 2009 Morey St Denis!

When reviewing my pre-sell request with the team from Maison Joseph Drouhin; one of the great Burgundy families. In doing so, I noticed something was missing from my confirmation. It was our request for some of the village level Morey St Denis.

Now normally I would have just shrugged it off, but I remember tasting the wine with Veronique in Beaune and really liking it.

So I asked what happened, a day later the Drouhin team came back to me and said they forgot about the Morey St Denis. The production I guess was so small that it got shuffled off to the side.

The wine has not been presented to anyone in the press nor was it presented to anyone in the world.

That being said, I inquired...How small is “small production?” The answer made my next question a NO BRAINER...Can we have it all!?

Well, we didn’t quite get it all as of course the family wanted some for their consumption but we did get a very nice chunk of it and in doing so played the age old game of “Let’s Make A Deal.”

That’s why I am able to offer you a great 2009 wine from one of Burgundy’s great producers for only $34.99 per bottle!

I am so impressed by this wine and excited to share the 2009 Vintage with you that with today’s pricing You save $15 per bottle—30%!

In Allen Meadows’ the Burghound May, 2011 issue he reviewed a majority of the Drouhin wines highlighting many of their Village Levels wines in his “Sweet Spot” and “Outstanding” categories.

Calling the Gevrey Chambertin “...an excellent quality level for a villages level wine” and the Nuits St Georges “...delivers impressive length for a villages level wine. Excellent quality here.” I am convinced that if Allen was given the opportunity to taste this Morey St Denis we would have been reading about another village wine of “excellent quality.”

At this price, this is a steal for top quality Red 2009 Burgundy, especially when compared to most of the village level pricing of the rest of the line-up that starts at $75.

Highest Scored 2009 Bourgogne Rouge In Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate!

The fi rst of the 2009s are starting to roll in! Hooray!!!

One of the first wines to arrive is the highest rated Bourgogne Rouge in Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. This turned out to be a very pleasant surprise!

We expected very good to exceptional marks for some Bourgogne Rouge in the 2009 Vintage. The quality of the 2009 Vintage really makes stocking up on Bourgogne and Village level wine fun, exciting and smart. But we never expected to hear that one of Burgundy’s greatest “resurrection projects” is responsible for turning out the highest rated Bourgogne Rouge 2009 so far!

zThis Is Just the Bourgogne Rouge, Imagine the Rest “...a sexy, beautiful wine...expressive aromatics and gorgeous integrity...”

The Lignier Michelot 2009s have arrived! In the delivery are of course some very impressive examples of Morey St Denis and one “sexy, beautiful” Bourgogne Rouge! As is the case in very strong vintages like 2009, the entry level and village wines really do deliver for the money.

Virgile Lignier did not miss a beat in 2009 and his wines are great examples of the Vintage and a joy to drink now. His Bourgogne Rouge is one of our top value picks of the vintage along with his Old Vine Village level Morey St Denis and Chambolle Musignys. Plain and simple, these wines are delicious now.

“Virgile Lignier’s 2009s show notable intensity and ripeness, but also preserve quite a bit of freshness through the use of whole clusters, which reach as much as 100% in two wines...” Antonio Galloni, the Wine Advocate 5/11.

Getting Better with Age...

Over the Summer, I cracked opened a few bottles of the 2009 Roger Luquet White Burgundies. Now I know you are probably wondering how my subject of “Getting Better with Age” has to do with 2009 White Burgundies. But it does. The Roger Luquet wines were some of the first 2009 White Burgundies to arrive at Zachys.

When the wines first arrived, they were delicious. All about ZIP and refreshing qualities, these wines became a hit and sold out very fast.

We just received our second shipment of the wines and let me tell you...more time in the bottle equals “Getting Better with Age.” The wines still have that refreshing ZIP but now the body, roundness and overall texture of the wines is even better.

They are a joy to drink now! Good body, good ZIP, great length and super clean aromatics of Green Apples, Pear, and a stony mineral edge. All in all, fun wines with the St Veran having a touch more lemon notes and the lightest of the two. The Pouilly-Fuisse is rounder, a bit more body and that hint of creamy texture. That being said, this trio is the perfect way to stock up on White Burgundy!

Drouhin from Clos des Mouches to Marquis Laguiche the 2009s are Simply Stunning!

It is no secret that we at Zachys have long been HUGE fans of the wines produced by the Maison Joseph Drouhin family. The house style is one of pure elegance and has attracted us for many years.

That is why in the 2009 Vintage, we are exceptionally excited about the Maison Drouhin wines.

With the richness and extremely high quality of the fruit, the refined natural tannin level and of course that Drouhin sense of elegance - the wines were bound to be some of the most elegant and thought provoking of the Vintage. And they are! Not to mention, some of the finest wines that are excellent to cellar for years to come. All in all we feel the Drouhin Family has turned out one of their greatest Vintages with wines that will continue to drink well for years to come and hold equally as well in the cellar.

“The 2009 Maison Joseph Drouhin wines that I did taste on this trip are superb, with neither the whites nor the reds showing any signs of the over ripeness that plagued some producers in this vintage...there were enough absolutely stunning examples in the Drouhin cellars on both the red and white sides of the ledger in 2009 that I have little doubt that the entire range is superb in this vintage, and where a score here or there may lag behind its customary range in previous vintages, I would strongly urge readers to assume that the wine was just a tad grumpy from its recent mise and that it will move up again as it has a chance to settle in again after its bottling.” John Gilman a View from the Cellar Issue #30.

WS Advance HIGHLY Recommended White Burgundy & Under $50!

The September Issue of the Wine Spectator Advance was posted last month. Many of the wines listed in the Advance we have seen the scores on already in the weekly Insiders.

However, there was one wine that was new to us. A White Burgundy that landed in the first section of the Advance as a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED wine.

It is none other than one of Domaine FERRET’s cru Pouilly Fuisse!

The Sous Vergisson is yet again another tremendous Pouilly Fuisse from Domaine Ferret much like their highly regarded Les Clos and Les Perrieres that have become huge hits at Zachys. Sous Vergisson much like the Les Clos is a powerful, complex Pouilly-Fuisse that really showcases the heights that can be achieved in Pouilly Fuisse.

The 2008 Sous Vergisson at 92 points is not only an exceptional rating for Pouilly Fuisse but it also makes this wine tied for the highest rated Pouilly Fuisse of the 2008 Vintage from the Wine Spectator!

Three wines thus far have been rated 92 points for the 2008 Vintage and two of the three are from Domaine Ferret. Yet again solidifying why Domaine Ferret is one of the finest estates in all of Burgundy.

Top Quality Cote Rotie for less than $100 is difficult to find.

However, one family continues to turn out magnificent wines across their entire range Vintage after Vintage...the Guigal Family!

Known the world over for their legendary single vineyard Cote Roties, the Guigal entry level Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde has become the benchmark for quality on sub $100 Cote Rotie and rightfully so.

Consistently one of the best wines of the Vintage in general, the 2007 Brune et Blonde is poised to be one of the finest Brune et Blonde produced by Guigal.

“As I have written many times before, no one in the wine world is better at “raising” a wine (or as the French call it elevage) than Marcel Guigal, who learned the skills from his father, Etienne...Moreover, Guigal’s wines always taste better out of bottle than from barrel, which speaks to his honesty and integrity as well as to his brilliance in deciding how long to age a wine in wood or tank as well as choosing the perfect moment to bottle it...” Robert Parker the Wine Advocate 2/11.

If you love Cote Rotie, this is one wine you need to have in the cellar.

“ Ridiculous Value” 91 Points—I Can’t Believe We Still Have It!

I can’t believe we still have some of this: 2008 Chimeres from Jean-Marc Lafarge!

The fi rst Vintage (2006-92WA) was a hit with almost 100 cases sold at Zachys.

The second Vintage (2007-92WA) was a tremendous hit with over 200 cases sold at Zachys.

The third Vintage just scored (2008-91WA) is an exceptional wine for the Vintage!

Chateau Saint-Roch from Jean-Marc Lafarge is the perfect example of a winery that OVER DELIVERS for the PRICE to QUALITY RATIO! Straight out of the gate, Saint-Roch wines have represented terrific values for exceptionally crafted wines. The 2008 is no different and we expected that the Wine Advocate team was going to tout this wine heavily once again.

Great drinking reds are in demand and now is the time to stock up.

Here is a reminder as to what the Wine Advocate had to say regarding this EXTREME VALUE!

“...I want to re-emphasize its amazing quality (not even to mention for the price!)...It almost seems as though Jean-Marc Lafarge is out to spoil things for every other southern French vintner by treating the consumer to wines of ridiculous value.” WA 8/09.

The tiny Domaine La Milliere has become a favorite and staple at Zachys going back years and years. With its overtly traditional label and take on Chateauneuf du Pape, Domaine La Milliere is still today one of the great buys in Chateauneuf du Pape.

A pure old vines cuvee from vines ranging in age of 80 to 100+ years old, the La Milliere vineyards just seem to keep getting better with age.

Just look at the quality progression of these vines over the last few great Chateauneuf du Pape Vintages:

Robert Parker, the Wine Advocate Reviews:

Vintage Score Description

2009 92-95+ “...one of the few 2009 Chateauneuf du Papes that will eclipse its 2007 counterpart...”

2007 92 “...seductive with silky tannins and a long, lush, opulent finish, it is impossible to resist at present...”

2005 92 “This is an estate to take notice of, as recent evaluations in this guide have certainly made abundantly clear.”

2003 91 “...an outstanding Chateauneuf du Pape and certainly a fine value...”

With this quality streak and the fact that this is destined to be one of the few 2009s to outshine the tremendous 2007s it makes stocking up on a great value Chateauneuf du Pape all the more easier!

“...one of the few 2009 Chateauneuf du Papes that will eclipse its 2007 counterpart...”

La Milliere 2009 | BTL $ SALE $

Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes(92-95+WA) {#340666} ......................................... 55.00 41.99“The stunning 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes (from 80-100+ year old vines) gives some credibility to the vignerons’ arguments that in the drought-stricken 2009 growing season, the northern Chateauneuf du Pape parcels were less impacted than those in the south. Domaine La Milliere’s vineyards are all in the northern sector. The deep ruby/purple-hued 2009 possesses abundant blackberry, black cherry and cassis fruit intermixed with notions of camphor, truffles, garrigue and licorice. Dense, thick and rich, it is potentially one of the few 2009 Chateauneuf du Papes that will eclipse its 2007 counterpart. An opulent, voluptuous texture, long finish and heady combination of herbs and super-concentrated fruit make for a wine that can be drunk upon release or cellared for 12-15 years...92-95+.” WA 10/10.

The Finest Yet?! | BTL $ SALE $

Granges des Peres 2007 (NYR) {#340783} .......... 115.00 89.95“Laurent Vaille’s 2007 components had not yet been blended when I visited him in December. The Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Mourvedre each were sensationally concentrated and highly expressive, promising one of the finest Grange des Peres red bottlings ever. All of these grapes were enormously ripe in flavor already by mid September, and while that entailed alcohol levels of 15-16%, the young component wines evinced no heat or harshness. Another reason to queue early for the 2007 is that quantities in 2006 are minuscule…” WA 6/09.

This is the essence of Granges des Peres!

One of the Southern France’s greatest wines, Granges des Peres is highly revered and sought after amongst collectors. With a “cult status” surrounding Granges des Peres it is no wonder this wine is extremely hard to find in the United States. The 2005 and 2006 Vintages have all but sold out for us and we anticipate the highly sought after 2007 Vintage to vanish once this issue of the Gazette hits homes. Remember Granges des Peres is located in the l’Herault Valley just south of the Rhone Valley and their Vintages tend to follow the Vintage patterns of the Southern Rhone…meaning this wine is coming from the critically acclaimed 98 point Vintage (WA) of 2007!

*Combe des Fous (Clos St Jean)(95-97WA) {#340006} ......................................... 250.00 150.00 “The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous (which essentially translates into the “swale of fools”) is produced from 13 hectares of vines situated primarily in La Crau. It is an interesting blend of 60% Grenache, as much as 15-20% Vaccarese, lots of Cinsault and some Syrah. Tasting the 2009 made me think it is more in the style of the virtually perfect 2005 than the other perfect cuvee, the 2007, which is a bolder, more flamboyant, fleshier, exuberant style of wine. The inky/purple-colored 2009 reveals glorious aromas of spring flowers, raspberries, blackberries, white chocolate, truffles and garrigue. The perfume nearly overloads the olfactory senses. In the mouth, this modern day legend in the making (which I could also say about the 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007) is massive, backward and full-bodied...96-98+.” WA 10/10.

Janasse vs Clos St Jean the Chateauneuf Face-Off Begins!

Chateauneuf du Pape is a village and region filled with amazing estates, producers and family wineries. Some of the long standing and historic names are Chateau Beaucastel from the Perrin Family and Clos des Papes from the Avril Family.

However, two family owned domaines that in the past 15 to 20 years that have really redefined Chateauneuf du Pape and raised the bar for all producers are: Domaine de la Janasse from the Sabon Family and Clos St Jean from the Maurel Family.

These two estates are magnificent. Turning out some of the finest wines of the Vintage no matter the Vintage. They are quite possibly the Top Two estates in Chateauneuf du Pape today.

The track record for these estates in stunning. Both have turned out multiple Robert Parker rated 100 point wines over the last 10 Vintages.

The 2009 Vintage is shaping up to be yet another tremendous Vintage and of course both Janasse and Clos St Jean are at the top of the list!

“Clos Ste.-Hune is the quintessential Riesling. It is unquestionably the fi nest produced in France, and can rival any Riesling producing in the world. The Clos Ste.-Hune combines an extraordinary minerality with striking concentration and intensity, which are often hidden beneath exceptional levels of acidity. This can be a powerful, concentrated wine, but it always comes across as delicate, nuanced, and fresh.” Robert Parker The World’s Greatest Wine Estates.

“The fi nest Riesling in Alsace, some would say the world, is grown in Trimbach’s Clos Ste-Hune within the Rosacker Grand Cru...” Hugh Johnson, Jancis Robinson The World Atlas of Wine 6th Edition.

“Quintessential Riesling...it is probably the greatest dry Riesling in the world.” Tom Stevenson The New Sotheby’s Wine Encyclopedia.

The critics and wine historians agree...Trimbach’s Clos Ste.-Hune is the “quintessential Riesling.”

When it comes to legendary vineyards and legendary white wines, Clos Ste.-Hune has to be part of the conversation. Owned, farmed and produced by the Trimbach family for over 200 years, the first official Clos Ste.-Hune single vineyard bottling was released in 1919. Since then, Clos Ste.-Hune has been one of the world’s most sought after white wines. With its proven consistent track record and its incredible ability to age...Clos Ste.-Hune rightfully so is one of the most collectible and prized white wines produced.

Cotes du Ventoux le Pierre Noire2006 (94WA) {#342548} ....................................... 44.99 35.99“Although slightly more expensive than most offerings in this report, this wine was just too remarkable not to include. A sensational red, it reveals a grand cru Burgundy-like bouquet of forest floor, black raspberries, and flowers, extraordinarily intense fruit, and a full-bodied yet delicate, layered mouthfeel. I know it sounds ridiculous, but it aromatics reminded me of some top vintages of Cotes de Nuits grand crus, although no oak is utilized. A remarkable achievement, it can be consumed over the next 4-5 years, although it may last even longer...

A breakthrough effort for the Cotes du Ventoux, this 2006, made by proprietor Philippe Gimel from his bio-dynamically farmed vineyards, is a blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah. (I was not surprised to learn that Gimel apprenticed under Christophe Sabon at Domaine de la Janasse.) Yields were 15 hectoliters per hectare, and the wine was aged in concrete tanks...94.” WA 8/10.

Robert Parker: “this wine was just too remarkable not to include. A sensational red, it reveals a grand cru Burgundy-like bouquet...”

The Saint-Jean du Barroux Le Pierre Noire 2006 was a huge hit last year and we had sold out of our first allocation in a day. We were able to get more and it has finally arrived and is in-stock now.

This is the Southern-Rhone wine that Robert Parker himself has called:

• Too remarkable not to include

• A sensational red, it reveals a grand cru Burgundy-like bouquet

• I know it sounds ridiculous, but it aromatics reminded me of some top vintages of Cotes de Nuits grand crus

• A remarkable achievement

And all these comments and adjective were in ONE very short paragraph! This is a don’t miss try for sure.

Baby Chateauneuf

Bring Back those Vacation Memories! The King of Muscadet

If you want great insight as to what the 2009 is all about...this is one of the wines to try now. A stone’s throw away from Chateauneuf du Pape this wine has historically out-shined many CNPs over the years and appears to be doing it yet again in the 2009 Vintage.

Every time I open up a bottle of the Gioielli Corsican white I am immediately back along the Mediterranean. The wine just evokes those travel memories. 100% Vermentino from the island of Corsica this wine brings together the best of the Southern France and Italian Coasts. With the classic vermentino spice and zip; the Gioielli wines just add in the warmth Corsican Island yielding wines that are powerful yet mouth-watering at the same time.

“Mark Ollivier Pepiere is one of the most consistently outstanding sources of Muscadet and as such a purveyor of some of the wine world’s most outstanding values, not to mention a grower constantly striving to reach new levels of excellence, as the wines at hand irrefutably demonstrate. This vigneron is on a roll! “ The Wine Advocate 8/10.

“ Cote-Rotie look-alike” Only $18.99-Smoking Syrah!

By now, you know that we are HUGE RHONE wine fans. HUGE!

And when it comes to Syrah we are so stuck in our old ways that it is all about “Old World” at Zachys. Specifically France.

Well today, we are sticking to the “Old World” for sure on this “Cote-Rotie look-alike” but this is not from France...

Spain is on deck today. Largely argued as one of the premier producers of Syrah and Grenache (Garnacha) the Spanish versions of these varietals have become renowned for their BANG for YOUR BUCK deliverance.

The Landi Sotorrondero is no different. This little 92 point Syrah is as the Wine Advocate points out a very “Cote-Rotie like;” not to mention a great steal at only $18.99! 92 points and $18.99 already make this a great steal of a red wine but top quality Syrah for Under $20 - unheard of!

One of the best well-made wines I have tasted all year!

Importer Chris Campbell of C&P asked me one day to taste this just for fun. He said “I know this is probably not for the shop but I just wanted to get your opinion of this.” At first look of the label I couldn’t tell what the wine was going to be or where it comes from. Turns out the Negre del Aspres is from the Costa Brava specifically in Emporda. The blend is old vine Carignan, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache.

The wine is superb! An excellent wine to drink or cellar. It is just an extremely well made wine. Not flashy, not confusing, not over the top. It is what I call a “winemakers wine.” This wine shows some very interesting earth and terrior but it does not scream one varietal more than the other. What it does do is give us a substantial medium full texture with plenty of earth and fruit throughout. All in all a very well balanced food wine.

That is why I had to make sure to stock a few cases for all of you that are daring enough to take my recommendation on this and check it out. It may only have received a 90 point review from the Wine Advocate but wine like this are not that easy to find, especially when one is as transparent as this.

Underbrush, a hint of balsamic, smoke, black cherry, and black currant inform the nose of this elegant (for Priorat) effort. In the glass, savory, spicy black fruits lead to a medium-long, pure finish…90.” WA 5/11.

Clos Fonta 2005 (93WA) {#347453} ........................ 85.00 63.00 “The 2005 Clos Fonta a blend of Garnacha and Carinena aged for 18 months in French oak, is a glass-coating opaque purple color accompanied by a fragrant nose of slate/mineral, licorice, espresso, incense, a hint of balsamic, black cherry, and black plum. Rich, dense, and loaded in the mouth, it displays enough structure to evolve for 4-5 years and will deliver prime drinking from 2015 to 2022, if not longer...93.” WA 5/11.

“PRIORAT - Priorat is one of only two regions in Spain (the other being Rioja) that has earned the Denominaciones de Origen Califi cadas in recognition of outstanding consistency of quality. Some of the world’s greatest Grenache is grown here and the Carignan is second to none.” Robert Parker’s the Wine Advocate 5/11

Since 1998, Priorat has been on a qualitative roll with 8 vintages in a row rated overall 90 points or higher by the Wine Spectator. A feat that is unheard of for any wine region in Spain. Not even Rioja or Ribera del Duero have achieved this string of top quality vintages. That being said only two of those Vintages received a “Classic” score from the Wine Spectator: 2001 and 2005.

The 2001s were magnificent; setting the benchmark for the region. However, the 2001s have basically all disappeared from the market place by now. Luckily for us, the 2005s have just started to roll in!

Wine Spectator Priorat Vintage Chart:

Vintage Score Drink Rec Description

2005 95 Drink or hold Balanced, expressive wines with red fruit and spice fl avors

2001 95 Drink or hold Fine summer. Ripe, powerful wines are benchmarks for the region

Plus in the last two issues of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, there has been extensive coverage and reviews on the wines from Catalunya with a heavy focus on Priorat.

“For readers of The Wine Advocate, the big story in Catalunya is the development of Priorat and secondarily of Montsant. It is hard to believe, but Priorat as a producer of world class wine did not exist when the Wine Advocate began in 1978. Priorat is hardly new as a wine growing region. It was far more widely planted 100 years ago than it is now. A visit to the region reveals large expanses of terraced hillsides devoid of vines. That, no doubt, made it considerably easier to reestablish viticulture in the late 1980s when the new pioneers arrived in the region. Priorat is all about old vine Garnacha and Carinena and if the likes of Rene Barbier had to start from scratch, we’d be wondering today what the fuss is all about. Subsequently, many people fl ocked to Priorat once it became apparent that world class wines could be made and that they could command high prices. However, there was only so much old-vine material to go around and wines produced with signifi cant amounts of Cabernet and Merlot proved to be much less interesting. Setting up shop in Priorat requires staying power because without old vines there is little reason for excitement. According to those whose families have lived in the region for generations, it takes 50-60 years for Carinena to develop character. The folks who put it in the ground mostly were not around to taste the fruit of their labor.” Robert Parker’s the Wine Advocate 5/11.

Out of this coverage, we are pleased to see that one of our newest arrivals has done extremely well in this massive 2005 Vintage. Mas d’en Gil is a great little property that has been well under the radar in the USA for a few years now. Really a “Sommelier’s” Priorat, Mas d’en Gil is frankly a more elegant Priorat when compared to the likes of Barbier’s Clos Mogador and Glorian’s Clos Erasmus. That is not to say the wines lack intensity, they are structured and just as intense as we have all come to expect from Priorat. They just have a touch more elegance and finesse in their youth that the big boys do not show without time.

And there lies the trick with Priorat. The wines are a bit of an enigma in their youth. They show massive textures, body, fruit and decadence young but with time they soften, round out and so extreme elegance and finesse...with the best becoming almost Burgundian. Mas d’en Gil is one of the few estates that shows this elegance and finesse throughout its life making it the all-around perfect Priorat to have in the cellar.

What made this wine stand out was its lightness. Not over the top jammy, not pungent with alcohol, and not tannic at all. Round, soft, supple and fresh. This wine really stood out for its balance and refinement. It was an added bonus that the wine also happened to be biodynamically produced.

So we’ve slowly been working with this gem since late last year but this week the Wine Spectator Insider came out and this little favorite of ours scored 92 points and frankly was one of the best values of the issue!

Just look how it stacks up to the competition:

If you have been a fan of Aussie Shiraz, or simply enjoy well made refined wines that show some great spice this is the wine for you!

Here we go again...

We’ve sniffed out yet again another GREAT BUY!90 Points and ONLY $11.99 per bottle!!!

This time the deal is from Argentina and is the Finca Vides Torcidas Malbec. The winery and importer both just called this morning to let us know that they received notices from Wine Enthusiast Magazine that their Malbec will be featured in the October Issue as a “BEST BUY” at 90 points! Congrats to them!

The 2009 caught our attention last year and we are glad it did. This has turned out to be very popular in the store. The reason why this wine is becoming so popular is that it is NOT OVER the TOP!

Very well balanced with more of a refreshing zip...this is not an inky, jammy, fruit bomb. The Finca Vides Torcidas shows balance with good fruit extraction, spice and structure without being dense.

For Only $11.99 per bottle you can’t pass up this deal!

The Next Kosta-Browne or Sea Smoke...

Is this the next Kosta-Browne or Sea Smoke? YES & NO!

Kutch Wines, the one man show of Jamie Kutch, is destined to be the next “CULT” Pinot Noir producer of California. A die-hard Burgundy “nut” that was so hooked by Pinot Noir that he left the New York streets to pursue his dream of making wine. Today, Jamie is living the dream making superb Pinot Noirs with a very Burgundian sensibility of how to do it. Minimal intervention! The results have been outstanding. The wines are breathtaking and setting Kutch Wines up to be the next “CULT” Cali Pinot.

Stylistically Kutch Wines is not the next Sea Smoke or Kosta-Browne. The quality of his wines is equal if not greater to these two “CULT” stars but his style is his own. The wines are pure and indicative of the Vintages but there is something about the care and tiny production that allows Kutch to turnout some excellent wines no matter the vintage. I guess there is a lot to be said about being a one man show—

“Former New Yorker, Jamie Kutch, a young professional in the world of fi nance, gave up his lucrative career on Wall Street to pursue his dream of making fi ne wine...his 2009s are unquestionably the fi nest wines he has yet produced...Everything, from bottle washer, barrel cleaner and sales, falls to Jamie Kutch as he is the only employee! The good news is that all fi ve of these wines represent about 2,200 cases of high class Pinot Noir.” Robert Parker, the Wine Advocate 2/11.

Groth Sauvignon Blanc2010 (★★½NYT) {#343289} ................................. 25.99 19.99Lively and balanced with ripe fruit, floral and earthy flavors...★★½ Stars.” NYT 7/20/11.

The #1 Wine Pick in the New York Times!

Eric Asimov and his tasting panel tackled the range of domestic Sauvignon Blancs in July the New York Times Wine Column.

Their #1 pick of the bunch - the classic GROTH!

“...we certainly had our favorites, like our No. 1, the 2010 Groth from Napa Valley, which, with its liveliness and balance, pleased all of us.” Eric Asimov, the New York Times, 7/20/11.

Groth has long been one of the finest producers for domestic Sauvignon Blanc with a rich history for turning out great wines.

Their Sauvignon Blanc is considered by many of us a benchmark for the grape and the region alongside the likes of: Frog’s Leap, Duckhorn, Cakebread and Merry Edwards.

So when Mr. Asimov tasting coordinator arranged for the 20 or so Sauvignon Blanc samples, he didn’t stack the deck. He included all the “greats,” all the benchmark producers we have come to identify with.

If you are a fan of Sauvignon Blanc, the Groth is the wine for you.

Block 7 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir2009 (90SWJ) {#345930} ..................................... 24.99 19.99 “Spicy lavender-tinged aromas are fulsome and enticing. In this case, the dried herb scent is brought on by the use of a good number of “whole clusters,” or grape bunches that are not separated into individual berries, but are still attached to the stem (or “rachis”) when the grapes go through their initial fermentation. On the palate, the 2009 Block 7 displays a core of sappy red and black berry flavors that are ripe but just so. By the second day, the Pinot perfume becomes even more complex, with notes of forest floor, orange rind, candle wax, and black spices...90.” SWJ 6/11.

High Quality Sonoma Coast Pinot Under $20 and 90 Points!

With the Wine Spectator already heavily touting the 2009 California Pinot Noir Vintage, the race for top quality wine has turned into a stampede!

“2009 California Pinot Noir: Best Vintage Yet?I’ve nearly fi nished my tasting of 2009 California Pinot Noirs, and the numbers are off the charts...based on the 2009 California Pinots I’ve tasted to far, it’s clearly one of the state’s most successful vintages to date. The off-the-chart numbers don’t lie. Will 2009 prove to be one of California’s all-time greats for Pinot Noir? Time will tell.” James Laube, Wine Spectator.com 7/5/11.

Block 7 has only been produced in two or three vintages. This is the larger volume test project of this highly acclaimed boutique winery. As it is a test project and they are slowly trying to build this up and test market demand, the “Cat has not been let out to the bag yet.” Now I wish I could tell you, but since we believe that this could become one of the BEST VALUE, BANG FOR YOUR BUCK line of Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir on the market today...I am not about to “OUT” this guy yet!

But trust us, if you love Sonoma Pinot Noir...YOU will want to try this! Plus the Sonoma Wine Journal has recently rated this 90 points. If anyone knows the ins and outs of Sonoma Pinot Noir it is the Sonoma Wine Journal.

Grgich Hills is one of Napa Valley’s Iconic Estates.

Founded by Miljenko “Mike” Grgich and Austin Hills in 1977 the storied career and success of Mike Grgich were already cemented before establishing his own personal winery. Mike came to the USA in 1958 and immediately began working in the wineries of Sonoma and Napa Valley.

Amongst those whom Mike worked with and for include:The legendary “founding fathers of Napa Cabernet” Andre Tchelistcheff at Beaulieu Vineyards and Robert Mondavi at Robert Mondavi Winery. Then in 1972 Mike joined Jim Barret to establish Chateau Montelena as winemaker and limited partner. In a very short period Jim and Mike catapulted Chateau Montelena onto the Worldwide Scene with their 1976 Chardonnay. Now commonly referred to as the “Paris Tasting” the Chardonnay crafted by Mike and Jim won acclaimed recognition and cemented these two men in the history books in one tasting in Paris as the Chateau Montelena was the first place Chardonnay of the tasting against many of France’s greatest Burgundies.

However, Mike’s touch does not rest solely with Chardonnay and over the years Mike has turned out amazing Cabernets from across the valley. We are pleased to offer you the 2007 Estate Grown Cabernet Sauvignon that was recently awarded 96 points by Michael Apstein of the Wine Review Online.

Once again, Grgich Hills has turned out an excellent wine in an already heralded Vintage. Remember, the Wine Spectator awarded the 2007 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage an overall Vintage score of 99 points!

Grgich Hills Cabernet Sauvignon2007 (96WRO) {#346301} .................................... 65.00 52.00 “Although Grgich Hills is certified Biodynamic, I suspect it’s Mike Grgich’s overall commitment to quality that makes this wine sing. Anyone looking for a great example of the oft-overused description of balance should taste Grgich’s 2007 Cabernet. Yes, it conveys ripe flavors as you’d expected from a wine with a 14.8% stated alcohol. But it’s fresh and lively, with engaging savory notes and finely polished tannins that give structure with out being astringent or aggressive. As it expands in the glass, it’s both juicy and chewy. Each sip conveys additional nuances. It’s a delight to find such power and finesse...96.” WRO 5/11.

Old-School Perfection—Why Walla Walla Is What It Is Today!

Only 300 Cases Produced!

Late last year Cobb Winery caught our attention. Another tiny Pinot Noir producer specializing in the Sonoma Coast their limited production Emmeline grabbed our attention. First there were still some of the wine to be had and considering since they only made about 300 cases that was a huge surprise. Second the wine was from the highly touted 2007 Vintage that the Wine Spectator awarded the Sonoma Coast AVA a 98 point overall rating. Third, the wine is delicious! This is one producer that we will have our eye on.

The Benziger Family has been turning out great consistent wines for decades atop of Sonoma Mountain, slowly redefining the VALUE-QUALITY position of Northern California Wines.

In addition to be extremely strong proponents of affordability, the Benzigers are the leaders and pioneers of Sustainable, Organic and Biodynamic produced wines in California. Basically talking to Mike Benziger for 15 minutes on farming practices is the equivalent of getting a Master’s Degree from UC Davis on Organic and Sustainable Farming.

With practically every wine from Benziger now certified Sustainable in the next few years you will see their complete range become certified Organic and more. This is unprecedented and amazing!

But most importantly the WINE IS DELICIOUS! The QUALITY is amazing and all the hard work and dedication in the past decade are now really screaming through these wines.

I’m telling you, BANG for YOUR BUCK doesn’t get better than this!

Envy Bee Bee’s Blend 2008 (NYR) {#343773} ....... 55.00 44.002008 has not yet been reviewed but the 2007 received 93 points from Robert Parker!

Envy Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 (NYR) {#343774} .. 55.00 44.00Somehow this wine has yet to be reviewed but all other Envy 2007s were rated 90+ point by Robert Parker.

“Carter Cellars is a relatively new operation (it began in the late 1990s) run by Mark Carter and Nils Venge. The wines are made at Venge’s Saddleback Cellars in Oakville with some assistance from Fred Schrader. They have some interesting vineyard sources, including the Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vineyard in Oakville, the Truchard Vineyard in Carneros, the Revilo Vineyard in St Helena, and the Coliseum Block in Soda Canyon.”

“The partnership of Mark Carter and Nils Venge has produced some impressive wines at Envy. Their Bordeaux varietal blend called Bee Bee’s tend to be nearly equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot mixed with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petite Sirah.”

“The long-time brilliant winemaker Nils Venge, now working with his son Kirk, has fashioned four impressive wines. Few people have as impressive a record of ageworthy, world-class Cabernet Sauvignons as does Nils Venge. I only have to go back to the fi rst California wine I ever gave 100 points to, his 1985 Groth Reserve. (He made it as part of a staggering lineup of wines that he produced from the Villa Mt. Eden vineyard – now Plumpjack.) He has long had a Midas touch with this varietal…” -Robert Parker, the Wine Advocate 12/09.

Mark Carter has assembled an all-star team to help cement Carter Cellars and Envy as some of Napa Valley’s premier wineries. With veteran legendary winemaker Nils Venge in one corner and the 100 point Master Fred Schrader in the other, it is no wonder that these wines are making statements and catching a good piece of the spotlight.

Sandhi Sanford and Benedict Chardonnay2009 (92SWJ) {#347138} ..................................... 49.99 39.99“…Restraint, class, purity and, dare I say, balance…92.” SWJ 7/11.

Maybe it was a just a daring and bold move, maybe it was a very calculated and thoughtfully paired move; but either way the wine world exploded with a huge buzz of “REALLY??? BOLD MOVE!!!” when Daniel Boulud and Daniel Johnnes served President Obama...Sandhi 2009 Sanford & Benedict Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay!

In basically the wines debut commercial vintage, Sandhi is like many of the other wineries of the Sta Rita Hills / Santa Barbara region specializing in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. However, the names associated with Sandhi are just as big as the two Daniels and the President.

A joint venture from three of California’s fi nest names in the wine community brings passion, extremely high quality standards and of course mountains of experience from practically every corner of the wine business today.

The three men are:

• Rajat Parr, Master Sommelier-Beverage Director of the Michael Mina Restaurant Group-Co-Owner of the Burgundy temple RN74-author of Secrets of a Sommelier

• Charles Banks, founder & former owner of Jonata-former co-owner of the CULT ICON Screaming Eagle-partner in Leviathan Winery-owner of Mulderbosch winery South Africa-Senior Executive Editor of Fine Wine Magazines

• Sashi Moorman, former chef turned winemaker/vintner-stops along the way included Ojai Vineyards-winemaker for Stolpman Vineyards-California winemaker for the critically acclaimed and international Evening Land Vineyards-owner Piedrasassi Vineyards

The combination of these three men in making Chardonnay and Pinot Noir has quietly been taking the California wine scene by storm but that storm is about to break-out world-wide and Sandhi is poised to be one of the next big names in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir production. Jancis Robinson, the Master of Wine and London based wine critic for the Financial Times recently included Sandhi wines as some of her top picks from the region.

For those of you that are a bit confused by the name Sandhi it does have a very poignant meaning to the winery: “an ancient Sanskrit word meaning alliance or collaboration, refl ects the partnership of its creators.” However, these gentleman know that great wine comes from great vineyards and that is why Sandhi is in the process of developing new vineyards while simultaneously acquiring access to some of the most legendary vineyards in Sta Rita Hills and Santa Barbara area.

The Sanford & Benedict Vineyard is one of those historic sites that has stood the test of time.

“Planted in 1971, Sanford & Benedict is the oldest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vineyard in Santa Barbara County, and one of the most iconic vineyards in California. Its north-facing location at the epicenter of the Santa Rita Hills appellation allows the grapes to ripen perfectly in the cool and foggy weather. The marine-based soil (clay and diatomaceous) delivers smaller yields and cluster. Sandhi Wine’s grapes come from blocks that are own-rooted.” Sandhiwines.com.

Frankly, I am not one to get super excited about new domestic Chardonnay over $25 per bottle as I am many times for my own good a Burg-Nut / Francophile. BUT, I had to try this and see for myself what it was all about. Am I glad I did. This is the most exciting and interesting new project that I have tasted from California in years, especially for Chardonnay. The quality here is on par if not better than the historic giants of the region: Calera, Au Bon Climat, Brewer-Clifton, Diatom, Melville, Ojai and Sea Smoke to name a few.

The winery professes BALANCE and BALANCE is what this wine is all about. Very impressive and well worth the look.

And yes, I too would have served this wine to the President of the United States. It is a great example of the heights that domestic Chardonnay can achieve.

Daniel Boulud & Daniel Johnnes’ Bold Move of What Wine to Serve President Obama!

*Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 (95+WA) {#138420} ......... 195.00 155.00“This was a spectacular performance from this hallowed vineyard as well as one of Napa Valley’s great historic terroirs. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, it reveals a still youthful personality and will benefit from another 5-7 years of bottle age. An opaque purple color is followed by aromas of graphite, creme de cassis, flowers and background earth as well as spice. The old eucalyptus-filled aromatics of a young Martha’s Vineyard are nowhere to be found as the 2001 is dominated by fruit and earth. Full-bodied and powerful with superb integration of wood, tannin, acidity and alcohol, this large-scaled red is capable of three or more decades of cellaring. It is unquestionably a youthful classic, but it requires patience from its owners...95+.” Robert Parker, the Wine Advocate 6/11.

Direct from the Heitz Cellars the 10 year Old 95+ point “youthful classic”!

“As brilliant as I thought the 2001s were eight years ago, today they have exceeded even my highest expectations.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate 6/11.

In the mouth, the wine reveals pure, rich, opulent fruit, medium to full body, no hard edges, and a luscious, fleshy style that is difficult to resist It should age easily for 5-10 years, but it is already irresistible.
