Grew up in the midst of Indian warfare No schools in Kentucky frontier Zachary studied for a while under tutors In 1808 was appointed a first lieutenant in U.S

army In 1810 was promoted to captain In 1810 met Margaret Mackall Smith Married on June 21,1810 Had I son and 5 girls 2 died as infants

months as president
