Dear YW Family and Friends, Transformation comes in many forms and in many seasons. This past year I have

been challenged with navigating my healing from breast cancer. It truly took the full

support of my staff, Board, and a broad community of friends and colleagues,

including many of you.

This year I have learned the importance of family and community. I have been reminded

that no one, not one of us, is an island. We rely on each other, on organizations, and on

services. We never know when we will need assistance.

This year, it became even more important to me to eat a rainbow full of fruits

and vegetables every day.

This year, it became even more important to me to model for my daughters

what it means to access resources and ask questions.

And, this year, it became even more important to me to empower myself by

asking for help when I needed it.

And I can honestly say that I have come out on the other side, truly transformed, stronger, and more thankful for you and

the YW community.

Our mission is bold and clear – Eliminating Racism, Empowering Women and Promoting Peace, Justice, Freedom and

Dignity for all. With your help, we do that for hundreds of people every day by offering

programs that bridge gaps in education, health care, child care and earning power.

Eliminating racism.

Stand Against Racism

• The YWCA of Asheville held

75 Stand events in 2015.

Asheville comprised 14% of

the 553 total Stand events

nationwide. The Stand brought

widespread community and

media attention to the fact that

racism still exists and must not

be tolerated.

Racial Justice Workshop

• We implemented a

YWCA Racial Justice Workshop to

train staff and Board on shared

language and concepts related to

racial justice, becoming familiar with

the YWCA’s racial justice framework,

and growing more comfortable talking

about race and racism.

Empowering women.

MotherLove

•Thirty-three pregnant and

parenting teenagers stayed in

school because of the

support, advocacy, resources,

and mentoring they receive in

the MotherLove program.

• Ninety-seven percent of

MotherLove participants

advanced to the next grade or

graduated high school.

Getting Ahead

• Fourteen women completed

our first Getting Ahead in a

Just Gettin' by World program

focused on identifying the

causes of poverty and how to

obtain resources to get out of

poverty.

• Graduates of the pilot

program secured permanent

affordable housing, higher

paying jobs, reached savings

goals, and increased credit

scores.

Empowerment Child

Care

• Sixty-five percent of

Empowerment Child Care

participants improved their

economic situation by

getting a job, increasing

their education, or securing

a vital social service such

as housing, permanent

disability benefits or legal

services.

Nurturing children.

Primary Enrichment

Program (Formerly the School

Age Program)

• 282 school aged

children attended the

afterschool and/or

summer day camp

where they received

homework assistance

and participated in swim

lessons, nutrition,

exercise, drama,

gardening, dance, and

field trips to help them

become lifelong learners.

Empowerment Child

Care (Formerly Drop-In Child

Care)

• Provided 10,024 hours of

free child care to 208

families seeking

economic security by

pursuing job training,

furthering education, and

accessing vital social

services.

Early Learning

Program (Formerly the Child

Care Center)

• Seventy-four children

ages 6 weeks

through 6 years

gained the skills and

enrichment they need

to get an excellent

start on their

education, cultural

development, and

social skills.

Promoting health.

Health & Fitness

• Club W and Aquatics

members visited the

YWCA more than

46,000 times to work

toward their health and

fitness goals, while

supporting programs

that change the larger

community.

vegetables tried in

Farmer's Market

• 13,592 healthy lunches

served in the Early

Preventive Health

•Thirty-three Latino families

learned the importance of healthy

food choices and physical

activities after attending Salsa,

Sabor y Salud, an 8 week,

culturally appropriate program

focused on healthy lifestyles.

• Seventy-six Diabetes Wellness

and Prevention participants

increased their level of physical

activity, intake of healthy fruits and

vegetables, and understanding of

diabetes resulting in better control

of their health condition.

In January, 2013 the YWCA’s Board and staff

developed an organizational Strategic Plan to

guide our work over five years.

Beth Maczka, CEO, says: “In my career it was one of the most inclusive

processes I’ve been part of, and you can see this in the result: a clear vision

of what we need to do to work towards expansion of our services in the long

term, while continuing to provide critical services in the short term.”

Our staff, Board, and volunteers are excited to share with you some of what

we accomplished towards our 5 year Strategic Plan during the

14-15 Fiscal Year.

We are dedicated to educating and protecting against

institutional and other forms of racism through public

engagement. We will work inside and outside the

YWCA with change makers and community partners through action, advocacy, service delivery, and healing.

• The Racial Justice Coalition formed in early December, a group of 12 community organizations co-chaired by the YWCA working to improve police-community relations.

• The YWCA Advocacy Committee surveyed YWCA staff and program participants to help inform the Advocacy Agenda. The top two priority areas were to address racial profiling, and to advocate to increase the state child care subsidy.

• As part of the YWCA Annual Conference in Washington DC, YWCA of Asheville representatives met with state legislators to lobby for the End Racial Profiling Act (ERPA) of 2004

• The YWCA collected 162 voter registrations and pledges, co-hosted six events and educational forums on voter ID laws, and a candidate forum.

We are a place where every woman is

empowered to transform her life in the areas of

finance, education, and health. In addition, she is

equipped with the tools to advance and succeed.

•We are proud to have launched Getting Ahead In a Just Gettin’ By World, an evidence-based empowerment model. Participants make an assessment of their own resources and how to build those resources as part of their move to self-sufficiency. Getting Ahead puts concepts, tools, and relationships in the hands of people in poverty to make a difference in their own lives and in the life of our community.

•GO! and Empowerment Child Care developed a new partnership to attract more women participants to GO’s job training programs by funding additional Empowerment Child Care hours- thereby eliminating child care as a barrier to job training.

We are an outstanding example for the community of

a place where people want to work and volunteer

because we are inclusive and respect the

contributions of the team, rise to the demands of the

work, encourage each person who walks through our

doors to be a leader, and support

them on their journey.

• The Board of Directors approved a paid parental leave policy for full-time staff, giving 4 weeks paid leave to care for a biological or adopted child.

• The YWCA increased the number of persons of color in leadership positions.

We have a sustainable and transparent financial

foundation that engages our community of

supporters, enables our work and supports our ability

to respond to opportunities and challenges.

• The YWCA added 31 new Eleanor Roosevelt Giving Society members: donors who pledge to give at least $1,000 per year for 5 years.

• We hosted 373 community members on an Empower Hour tour, where they experienced the mission of the YWCA and enjoyed a healthy lunch.

• The YWCA hosted our first Persimmon Luncheon, a free, heart-warming event to raise funds for the organization. More than $256,114 was raised in cash and pledges!

• Club W Health & Fitness Center continued to implement recommendations to make the facility more profitable, including a mobile application and redesign of common spaces. Personal training was brought in-house, which increased personal training revenue by 42 percent. Swim lesson enrollment increased by 51 percent over the previous year.

We use strategic marketing and communications to

foster meaningful and open dialogue, to promote

awareness of the YWCA, and to engage the

community, staff and the people we serve in

fulfilling our mission.

• We conducted a multi-year brand audit of the YWCA of Asheville, including focus groups, a public survey, a media analysis, and a materials audit. The results have informed the organization’s communications and marketing plan.

• The Leadership Team created a set of key messages for the YWCA and its programs,

including messaging connecting each program with the YW mission.

Empower Hour – Empower Hour is a one-hour tour and healthy lunch where guests may experience first-hand the YWCA’s work and mission. Empower Hours take place twice a month at our location at 185 S.
