For the Yaks, this year’s 2011 NWAACC Basketball Championship is dedicated to the memory of YVCC Women’s Basketball player Hannah Cordova, who died tragically in a car accident on Monday, February 28, 2011. A graduate of Wapato High School, Hannah was a popular student who was actively involved in community service as well as being a two-sport athlete at YVCC, also playing on the women’s soccer team. “Hannah’s passing is a heartbreaking loss to the YVCC and Wapato communities,” said Head Coach Cody Butler. “Her unselfish character was demonstrated daily by being the ultimate team player, and her infectious smile and work ethic made everyone around her a better player and person.” Hannah’s death serves as a reminder of other NWAACC student-athletes who were taken before their time. It is a somber reminder of the frailty of life and how important it is to treasure those who enrich our lives. Hannah loved to play basketball and she loved being part of a team. The most fitting tribute the YVCC Women’s Basketball team could give her was to play the championship tournament games with joy, with intensity, and most of all, as a team.

Hannah CordovaIn Memory

Entering the history books, YVCC Women’s Basketball won the 2011 NWAACC Title at the Championship Tournament in Kennewick. The team set out to win the championship just a week after losing their teammate, Hannah Cordova, in a tragic car accident. Undecided whether or not to compete, the Yaks decieded to play forHannah, for her family, and for themselves, exhibiting an incredible performance over the four-day tournament. The team opened the first-round against Bellevue, winning 60-48. They went on to beat Clackamas 73-59 and in the semi-final topped Spokane with a 60-41 final score. The Yaks advanced to the final game in a match up with Eastern Region rival and defending NWAACC Champs Walla Walla. Yakima won 53-40, earning Head Coach Cody Butler his first NWAACC title. “With only one returning player from a team that played in the championship the previous year, our goal at the beginning of our season was to have this group of 14 new individuals come together as a team as quickly as possible,” stated Butler. “Early in the year we struggled to a 10-6 record. It was then that Hannah Cordova’s influence began to emerge. Hannah was late joining the team because she also played soccer. However, once she became comfortable, her positive attitude and work ethic became contagious to the team,” he continued. Due largely to the impact Cordova created, the Yaks were able to win 13 of their last 14 games and the last nine straight on the road to the championship. “The teamwork, work ethic, and camaraderie inspired by Hannah will be felt by everyone associated with this team for the rest of their lives,” he concluded. Overcoming the emotions of losing a friend and teammate, YVCC’s Dequise Hammick scored 21 points and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, Britteny Newcomb earned the tournament’s Most Inspirational Player award and AJ Yarlot and Aliyah Green made the All-NWAACC Tournament First Team. Newcomb and Mariah Roe were also named the Eastern Region All- Stars First Team and Second Team respectively.

Blodgett was a two-year starter for the Yaks, averaging 13.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.2 steals as a sophomore, all the while shooting a blistering .658 from the field, leading Yakima to a 26-6

She started every game her freshman year, as YCC finished 29-4, won the Eastern Region Championship and finished third at the NWAACC Championship Tournament. Anna Marchbanks from YVCC signs with Oregon State

Anna Marchbanks has been involved in less-than-ideal situations a number of times in her basketball career, and they

have all turned out well. She hopes this one will, too. The 5-foot-8 2008 graduate of McKay High School has signed a

national letter of intent to play basketball at Oregon State University. The Oregon State program, which finished 2-16 in

the Pac-10 Conference last season, is in turmoil. Fifteen players, many of whom complained about the way they were

treated by (former head coach LaVonda) Wagner, and four assistant coaches have left the program in recent years.

Wagner was fired June 1. She has not been replaced, but a new coach is expected to be named soon. But the always-

upbeat Marchbanks looks at the situation as a positive experience.

“You got to realize that it’s going to be a rebuilding year,” Marchbanks said. “And

me going to McKay in high school and North, rebuilding’s what I’ve been through.

“It was nothing I was afraid of. To me, it was a challenge. I took it with open arms

and signed my letter of intent the next week.” Marchbanks’ mother, Wilma, played

volleyball at Ole Miss, brother K.J. McCrae played football at Portland State and

brother Kyley McCrae plays football at Western Oregon.

In her first year out of McKay, Marchbanks went to Central Arizona Junior College

in Coolidge, Ariz., and helped the team win the National Junior College Athletic

Association Division I championship. She led the national tournament in shooting

percentage at 84.6 percent and averaged 8.8 points and seven rebounds per game in

the tournament. Marchbanks played post in Arizona, but she wanted to play guard,

so she transferred to Yakima Valley Community College.

Moving to guard for her sophomore year, Marchbanks averaged 20.5 points per

game and 9.4 rebounds as Yakima advanced to the Northwest Athletic Association

of Community Colleges championship game before losing.

“Definitely a learning experience,” Marchbanks said. “Definitely going to (play for

coach Cody Butler) opened my game up. (I) shot my three-ball a lot more. Cody’s an excellent coach. If it was not for

Cody, I would say I probably wouldn’t have graduated.

Having done so at East Valley High School and Yakima Valley Community College, Mengarelli on Thursday night treated a Nicholson Pavilion crowd to her wizardry, keying a second-half surge that led Central Washington to a 58-52 victory over Alaska Anchorage.

"She's a pretty special player," coach Jeff Whitney said. "She can get to the rim almost at will, which we knew about, but she's also got a nice little pullup jumper."

San Francisco, CA ---- Academy of Art University women's basketball Head Coach Lindsey Yama-

saki has announced the signing of a highly touted recruit - Nicole DeRosier. Nicole will join the Urban

Knights for the 2010-11 campaign after a high successful junior college ca-

reer at Yakima Valley Community College. Nicole was a first team all-

region and a first all-tournament player while leading YVCC to back to back

region championships. She averaged 13.4 points, while shooting 42% from

the 3 pt line as a sophomore with Yakima Valley Community College.

A 5'9 guard from Puyallup, WA, DeRosier should provide a boost to ART

U’s perimeter game. DeRosier was a First Team All-Tournament player in

three tournaments, including the NWAACC Conference Championship.

“Nicole is a great addition to our roster. We need scorers and that is exactly

what Nicole brings to the table,” says Yamasaki.

Yamsaki continues, “My favorite thing about Nicole is her feisty attitude. She is that player that is going to

wrestle you to the ground for a loose ball; something this team needs to keep us moving forward and striv-

ing to improve..”

Hawaii Pacific University sign posts player Nicole Fenumiai

With the signing of two guard players that barely reach 5 foot 4, Hawaii Pacific women's basketball coach Jeff Harada turned his attention to the inside with the signing of a post player Nicole Fenumiai. The signing of Fenumiai to a National Letter of Intent for the class of 2010 gives Jeff a polished player who loves to spend time in the gym.

"She's a basketball junkie. She can't get enough of it," Jeff said. "That was a big thing that stuck out with me when I was watching her. She's very fundamentally sound. I attribute that to the great programs she's been involved with in high school, AAU, and Yakima Valley Community College, but also the extra work she's done with her dad and on her own. Her experience at a championship caliber program like YVCC will make her transition to the NCAA Division II level much easier."

Fenumiai visited the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus and was recruited by a number of universities throughout the west coast, but chose

to sign with Hawaii Pacific University.

"I really liked the coaches a lot. That was the biggest thing. I got time to hang out with the girls and really liked them a lot, too. I'd never been to Hawaii before and I loved it. It was really beautiful. "Playing at YVCC helped me achieve my dream of playing beyond high school. It has now given me the opportunity to continue my career in a great environment at HPU.”l

Washington State Cougars Signs YVCC’s Adzasu

PULLMAN - The Washington State University women's basketball team has signed Rosetta Adzasu to a

National Letter of Intent, head coach June Daugherty announced Wednesday, the first day of the spring

signing period.

"Rosetta is an experienced and very talented point guard who is a proven winner," Daugherty said. "Her

energetic playmaking skills are outstanding at both ends of the floor."

Adzasu, a 5-foot-5 guard from West Linn, Ore., was a 2008 McDonald's All-America nominee following her

senior year at West Linn High School. She is transferring from Yakima Valley Community College, where

she earned first-team All-Eastern Region honors as a sophomore in 2009-10.

Adzasu played her freshman season at Central Arizona College, where she helped lead the Vaqueras to the

National Junior College Athletic Association Division I National Championship. She was named to the

NJCAA all-tournament team following the victory.

In her lone season with the Yaks, Adzasu also garnered first-team Northwest Athletic Association of

Community Colleges All-Tournament honors after leading the team to the championship game. The Yaks

went 13-1 in earning a second-straight Eastern Region championship, and Adzasu was named Most

Inspirational at the NWAACC Tournament.

During her prep career, Adzasu was a three-time All-Three Rivers League honoree, and led the Lions to three-

straight appearances in the Oregon School Activities Association 6A playoffs. She was the co-recipient of the

team's Miss Offense Award as a senior, and represented Oregon in the Northwest Shootout, featuring the top

players from Oregon and Washington. She was also named West Linn's best defensive player as a junior and

most improved as a sophomore.

YVCC Head Coach Cody Butler on Rosetta Adzasu... "We are extremely proud of what Rosetta has accomplished during her time at YVCC. Rosetta was

instrumental in not only leading our team to a region championship, but she has also set a great example for

our future players of what can be accomplished by committing yourself to academic goals. In nearly every

game this season Rosetta's defensive intensity established the tone for our team. The infectious ferocity she

displayed will have a lasting impact on our program long after she is winning games at Washington State."

Lady Griz signing completes husband-wife recruiting coup by: Joel Carlson of the UM Sports Information Department Thursday, 05/01/2008

University of Montana women's basketball coach Robin Selvig announced Thursday that Shaunte Nance-Johnson has signed a

National Letter of Intent and will join the Lady Griz program next season. Nance-Johnson is the wife of Anthony Johnson, the 6-3 guard from Yakima Valley Community College the Grizzly men's basketball team signed last week.

Nance-Johnson, a 5-5 point guard, is a 2005 graduate of Henry Foss High in Tacoma, Wash. She played at Northwest Nazarene in Nampa, Idaho, as a freshman in 2005-06, then transferred to Yakima Valley for the 2006-07 season. Nance-Johnson did not play in 2007-08. During her year away from basketball, Nance-Johnson coached the girls basketball team at Riverside Christian School in Yakima while Johnson completed his second year at YVCC. Nance-Johnson will enter the Lady Griz program as a junior in eligibility. The couple was married Nov. 1, 2006. Nance-Johnson becomes the first junior college transfer to join the Montana women's basketball program since Jill Greenfield and current assistant coach Annette Rocheleau, nee Whitaker, transferred into the program prior to the 1979-80 season. This situation just worked out well for everyone involved. The men were recruiting Shaunte's husband, and we had only two kids in that (junior) class and a scholarship available with Betsy Snead's departure. "We started checking her out and we really like what she can bring to our program. She's a prototype point guard who has great speed and quickness. She's a great kid and a real leader. She's an impressive young lady who is going to make a great addition. "Point guard isn't necessarily an area of concern for us because of Mandy (Morales), but depth at the point guard is definitely an area of concern. For any (incoming) player to have an immediate opportunity with the kids we have returning, that would be the position. "Again, it just worked out well for everyone. Shaunte just wanted to be with her husband and have an opportunity to play again."

At Foss High Nance-Johnson was a two-time Narrows League MVP, an all-state selection, a McDonald's All-American nominee and a member of the 4A West team at the 2005 Washington State Coaches Association All-State game. After helping the NNU Crusaders to a 17-11 finish in 2005-06 as a freshman, Nance-Johnson joined the Yaks in 2006-07. As a team captain, she averaged 9.6 points, 4.7 steals, 4.2 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game. Nance-Johnson was the defensive point of attack on a YVCC team that forced an average of 26 turnovers per game. Playing in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC), Yakima Valley won the Eastern Region regular-season championship in 2006-07 with a 12-2 record. The Yaks finished 29-4 overall, advancing to their third straight NWAACC tournament final four. Montana went 25-7 in 2007-08, winning its 21st regular-season conference championship and advancing to its 17th NCAA Tournament. The Lady Griz will return four starters and eight letter-winners in 2008-09.

YVCC guard commits to CWU

Yakima — Siena Locke becomes the third YVCC player to commit to a

four-year university this year. Siena’s commitment comes days after

Tiffanie Ulmer announced her decision to attend Eastern Oregon

University and a week after Elyse Mengarelli signed her letter of intent at

Central Washington University.

Siena leaves Yakima Valley Community College’s better than she found

out it. Having started every game in her two year career, Siena led the

Yaks to two consecutive final four appearances at the NWAACC

Championship tournament and a two-year career record of 52-14. The

yaks were undefeated at home this past season.

“Siena’s aggressiveness and tenacious Defense will be hard to replace.”-

Coach Butler. “Siena is a player that only knows one way to play and will

run through walls to win. The best example of this was the semi-final

game her freshmen year vs. Lane. Our normal scorers were struggling to

put the ball in the hoop so Siena stepped up and quadrupled her scoring

average in the most important game of the season. She finished the game

with thirty points.”

Women's Basketball Signs JC Star from Washington

Head Women's Basketball Coach Anji Weissenfluh announces the signing of Tana Stickney from Yakima Valley Community College May 2008

LA GRANDE, Ore. - Last season the Eastern Oregon women's basketball team won 25

games, a Cascade Conference Championship and advanced to the sweet sixteen of the

NAIA National Tournament for the first time in school history.

EOU’s latest signee won 26 and 29 games, an Eastern Region Championship and two

Final Four finishes in her respective years at Yakima Valley Community College.

After the loss of six seniors from that team, Head Coach Anji Weissenfluh is charged with

reloading for 2009 and the signing of 5'10 forward, Tana Stickney is a major step in that

direction.

Stickney prepped at East Valley High School in Yakima, Washington. As a senior captain

for the Red Devils Tana was named League MVP and 2nd Team All-State while leading

her team to conference and district championships. EHS advanced the state

championship every year during Tana’s four year varsity career, including a state

championship during her freshmen campaign.

Coach Butler’s comments on his former player, “ Coach Weissenfluh is getting a veteran

type player that can make an immediate impact next year." "Tana is good sized forward

that can shoot the three and post up which should provide a lot of options on the offensive

end."

EOU women's basketball will kick of the 2008-2009 season on October 30 in Hermiston

Ulmer Has Career Night against former YVCC teammate in Win over Evergreen

January 27, 2007

The Mounties started the game on a 13-0 run only to give that lead up and find

themselves down five to Cascade Conference foe Evergreen with 4:30 left in the

game. However, over the last few minutes EOU (16-5) outscored TESC (4-17) by

13 to win 68-60 in Olympia.

Tiffanie Ulmer had her best game as a Mountaineer, scoring a career-high 32

points and pulling down 9 rebounds in 34 minutes of action. The junior

forward was impressive from the start doing much of her damage around the

basket. Ulmer also stepped her game outside where she made several perimeter

shots including both of her three point attempts.

According to coach Anji Weissenfluh Ulmer plays her best when her teammates

need her the most, "When the game is on the line that is when Tiffanie is at her

best. She gives us a go to person and she was awesome tonight throughout."

Helping Ulmer out in the scoring department was senior Christie Weaver. The

5'10 wing scored 20 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, 14 of those points came in

the second half. Many of which were in the final minutes while Eastern was

surging from behind.

The Geoducks were helped by Tiffanie’s former Yakima Valley Community

College teammate Molly Clark’s 4 of 6 shooting from the 3 point line.
