Where in the World is YUPO?Chesapeake, Virginia – Home of Yupo Corporation America

In our mission to tell you about the global infl uence of Yupo Corporation, we wanted fi rst to tell you a little about our United States headquarters and manufacturing facility in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Yupo Corporation America is a division of Yupo Corporation. Our global headquarters is in Japan; however, much of the paper you use is made right here in the U.S. at our Chesa-peake plant located centrally on the East Coast. Yupo broke ground on the Chesapeake site in 1997, which was chosen in part for its access to the rail lines that carry the raw materials that are used to manufacture YUPO papers.

The 170,000 square foot facility is home to an approximately quarter-mile long production line. From the production of the polypropylene pellets to the fi nished YUPO papers and

substrate ready to ship to our distributors, Yupo’s proprietary processes are overseen by a staff of 150 dedicated employees. Heralded for its ultra-clean, water-free processing methods, YUPO papers are processed 24/7 to meet the continued rise in demand for its products.

The recent addition of YUPOBlue to the lineup of YUPO products will surely keep our Chesapeake plant production lines moving and our status in the synthetic world on the rise.

YUPO gets the “SCOOP” on DSCOOP300+ Attendees Have The Opportunity to “Preview” YUPOBlue

Yupo Corporation America recently took part in the third annual conference of the Digital Solutions Cooperative – known as “Dscoop.” Yupo was a bronze sponsor in this year’s HP Indigo user event, which ran last February in San Diego.

This rapidly growing event attracted 1,200 attendees and 57 industry partners who shared knowledge and success stories on using the HP Indigo print system. Naturally, Yupo fi ts into that fold!

The Yupo trade show team, consisting of Paul Mitcham, Director of Marketing and Sales Support; Troy Olson, Marketing Manager; Dave Jeffers, Technical Service Manager; and Brad Van Zandt, Regional Sales Manager, interacted with several hundred HP Indigo users and customers, HP subject matter experts and industry decision-makers at Dscoop’s “Solutions Showcase” exhibition.

More than 300 visitors to the Yupo booth enjoyed a “sneak preview” of the new YUPOBlue product – the fi rst YUPO paper offi cially approved for use with the HP Indigo printer. YUPOBlue made its offi cial debut this spring at HOW (see cover story).

The team looked as sharp as images printed on YUPO paper – decked out in offi cial Yupowear and against a booth backdrop of blazing Yupo Orange and Indigo Blue.

Yupo’s crew used the opportunity to speak with and learn from many current YUPO paper users about the ben-efi ts of Yupo brands and distinguish the differences between Yupo and the competition to future customers.

As expected, the “Wally Tape Test” was a great crowd-pleaser and generated signifi cant “buzz” among Dscoop attendees. Designed to show the superior ink adhesion qualities of YUPOBlue, the Wally Tape Test invited booth visitors to apply and peel away ordinary transparent tape onto the printed image of Wally on YUPOBlue. Naturally, the tape lifted but the ink stayed put.

“Dscoop opened my eyes to where the digital printing industry is headed,” said Scott Buswell, conference attendee and vice president of Printing Specialist Corporation. “It is a brave new world and having a peer group that can help you navigate through it is vital. Dscoop is the map.”

The fourth Dscoop Annual Conference is being planned for 2009 and Yupo currently plans to attend with a larger presence to promote YUPOBlue.

Can you tell me a little bit about the history of synthetic paper?“Synthetic Papers” have been manu-factured since the 1960’s. Although synthetics are technically plastic substrates, they are generally manu-factured with a much higher level of quality to provide a more consistent printing substrate than polystyrene, vinyl and other more commodity-type plastics. Shelf life is longer and synthetic papers have less of a plastic, rigid feel. Typically, they are more subtle to the touch and more fl exible for post-press functions like die-cutting, folding, foil-stamping, etc. Synthetics have become increasingly popular with designers for jobs requiring extra durability and performance. As a result, more and more print shops are seeing requests to produce jobs on synthetic paper. It’s uncommon for today’s print shop not to have printed a job on synthetics or to be hesitant to quote a job on synthetic paper.

What are the many applications for synthetic papers?Typical applications include brochures and catalogs, point-of-purchase displays, shelf talkers and channel strips. You will also see banners, outdoor posters and restaurant menus. Synthetics can also be used for book covers, manuals, navigation charts, maps and books of all kinds, especially cookbooks and children’s books. Synthetics can also be used for merchandise and nursery tags, logging and lumber tags, and index tabs. Label applications are numerous. Another area where synthetics are gaining ground is in the card market. Temporary ID cards, membership cards, insurance cards, promotional credit card offers and even phone cards utilize synthetics. Applications continue to expand outward and cur-rently government and food-related uses are promising growth avenues for the use of synthetic papers.

Fast-Drying YUPO Accel Excels for Printer’s Synthetic Paper Needs

Randy Pritchard, president of Mercury Media Group, Inc., located in Orlando, Fla., typically shies away from synthetic jobs due to the lengthy dry times. However, after learning about YUPO Accel – a high-gloss, fast-drying synthetic paper – he decided to put it to the test. “We noticed the ink started to ‘set up’ within an hour after completion and the color results were brilliant,” stated Pritchard. “The next morning, my bindery supervisor cut the press sheets and we were both pleasantly surprised to see the sheets were completely dry and there wasn’t any ‘setoff’.” Pritchard then decided to take it a step further by running water over one of the sheets. “I couldn’t believe it – Accel proved to be totally waterproof and we didn’t even use any coating,” Pritchard said. “YUPO Accel is superior – I’d recommend this sheet to several of my clients.” Like all YUPO paper, Accel is tear-, chemical- and stain-resistant, 100% waterproof and recyclable. Accel is ultra-white, extremely durable and boasts exceptional high gloss and stiffness.

YUPO Accel is available in 68#, 5.1 pt. text and 78#, 5.9 pt. text, as well as 58#, 8 pt. cover, 74#, 9.9 pt. cover and 86#, 11.6 pt. cover.
