In February pupils celebrated Chinese New Year by engaging in Chinese activities, dressing in a Chinese theme, and being visited by Jenny Davies, who presented photographs, stories and artefacts gathered from her travels around China last year.

Key Stage 2 pupils were recently
visited by PC Jones, from Dyfed
Powys Police Force, for a fire
safety presentation. Pupils were
told about the dangers from
everyday things that shouldn’t be
overlooked, such as leaving
chargers on overnight, and
overloading plug sockets and
extensions.

Offa and Hafren classes had a real treat last month when Summer and her Dad brought a live
owl into school for a ‘show and tell’ activity. The owl was very friendly, waving his wings at
the children. Summer presented some interesting facts to the classes and Dad answered
questions. The visit was excellent and we all really enjoyed having the opportunity to get so
close to such an amazing bird.
We have a new group in school – Criw
Cymraeg. With representatives from
every year group in school, Criw Cymraeg
will meet regularly with Mrs Senior, and
our Welsh teacher Mrs Andrews, to
promote Welsh speaking around the
school, especially during break and lunch
times. Criw Cymraeg
will also be responsible
for awarding the best
speakers with ‘Token yn
Cymraeg’s’ – and
choosing our weekly
‘Siaradwr yr Wythnos’.

As part of National Shakepeare celebrations, commemorating 400 years since his death, Year 5/6 Elystan Class are taking part in a performance at Theatre Hafren on Wednesday 16th March. Leighton pupils will perform a song they wrote themselves, supported by visiting musicians from the performance, on stage, in front of an audience of school children and teachers from around Powys. Leighton pupils are very proud to be the only school represented in such a way and I am sure all will thoroughly enjoy the chance to perform their own compostion, live, in the theatre; well done to all involved! A full report on the performance will follow in our next newsletter.
Well done to all recent Leighton participants in the area cross country run, and swimming gala, but especially to Mackenzie McCourt who has
qualified to take part in the next round of swimming gala competitions, and also finished a close 2nd place in the cross country run at Llanfair Caereinion High School last week.
