Foreword by HeadteacherWelcome to Ysgol Bryn Castell and thank you for showing an interest in our

provision.

Moving into a new school or progressing from year 11 into the sixth form is an

exciting time for young people and making the right choice is important. I hope

that the information in this prospectus is useful and I encourage you to come and

visit us at the school to help with your decision. We welcome parents and pupils

to the school at any time for a full tour and to discuss opportunities while we’re at

work.

YBC is a small school. This means that we can really get to know all of our pupils and their families well. The school

caters for the needs of all its members and celebrates their achievements, whether they are academic, sporting,

artistic or cultural.

The school is a place where young adults can thrive and grow. We have high expectations of our students in terms

of their achievement, attendance, behaviour and dress. We have a positive ethos and expect that students show

respect for themselves, their peers, school staff, visitors and the environment around them.

Staff at Ysgol Bryn Castell are 100% committed to providing the best possible education for their students. We

believe in working together with parents to ensure that EVERY CHILD achieves the best they possibly can.

YBC is a caring and supportive school. We work hard to develop the feeling of belonging to a community. Year 11

students coming to us from other schools or existing pupils moving on from Key stage 4 will receive a

comprehensive programme of support and induction so that they can get to know their new tutor group early on

in their first term at the school.

This prospectus informs you of the subjects you can study within our school and also of the curriculum

opportunities outside school as part of our collaboration with Bridgend College and other schools. Your choice of

subjects and courses are important for your future consider your options and choose wisely.

If there is any further information that you require please do not hesitate to ask, to arrange a visit or to come and

meet with myself, or any of my team.

I look forward to welcoming you to the school, and to working with you in the future.

Introduction to Life in the Sixth FormAt Ysgol Bryn Castell we have a small but successful Sixth Form which caters for those students who would benefit

from experiencing a range of skills for life and employability in a supported setting. We realise that not all students

progress along their learning pathway vertically or are ready to make choices about their future. For this reason our

sixth form focuses on an array of skills and vocational tasters to give students greater knowledge and experience

of pathways whilst developing self confidence and independence. We are learner centred and aim to cater for

those pupils who are working at Entry level or Level 1/2. The entry requirement is for students to have a genuine

desire to return to school to further their education and a willingness to work hard. You will also need to have

achieved the base line requirements for your chosen programme of studies, as this will ensure that your proposed

route forward is realistic and achievable.

The value of the Sixth Form lies not only in the courses offered but also in the development of informal relations

with fellow students and staff, whilst at the same time making contacts with people in the wider Community. As

a senior student, the image you promote to younger pupils is important and we need you to be positive role

models.

In the Sixth Form, you will enjoy privileges and increased freedom, remembering that this brings increased

responsibilities.

We hope that you will enjoy all that our Sixth Form has to offer, making your time at the school a rewarding,

enjoyable and worthwhile experience.

Uniform

Due to the collaborative nature of our sixth form and the variety of vocational opportunities on offer to the studentsthere is no school uniform. Pupils will only be required to dress appropriately for their planned school day. However, we expect pupils to be well presented at all times. Hats and ‘hoodies’ are discouraged and parents arealso reminded that for safety reasons, no jewellery is allowed other than a single pair of stud earrings and a watch.Responsibility of these items rest with the pupils.

COMPACT

To encourage you to fit into Sixth Form life effectively and give you a solid basis for your future education andemployment the Bridgend Learning and Skills 14-19 Network has introduced a Compact Agreement into theschool.

During Year 12, students work towards a series of goals including such things as a high level of attendance andpunctuality that if achieved will result in the awarding of the Compact Certificate enabling the student to becomea Compact Graduate.

The Compact award includes seven goals that record something of your social, learning and personal developmentas a student and if achieved will enhance your chances of progression to higher education or employment.

Moving OnAlthough the Sixth Form is the beginning of a new stage of your secondaryeducation, it is also the next step before moving on to your chosen career.Naturally then, you will begin to look to what comes next.

Whatever your intentions, there will support at hand to guide you: staff inschool and an adviser from Careers Wales will be available to help to you.If you intend to go from the Sixth Form into the world of work, the provision of work experience in Year 12 will be of particular use. For thoselooking for further study after completing Entry level and Level 1 and 2 courses, the courses in the next edition ofthis booklet might be a good place to start or perhaps you might prefer to look at full-time courses offered byBridgend College.

The decision to proceed to Further Education and what to study when that decision is made are not decisions thatyou are expected to make without school support. In partnership with Careers Wales the school aims to give relevant and practical guidance to every student seeking to move on to Further Education or training.

This is part of a two year programme of career events for all Sixth Form students that include support with application forms, provision of information about colleges as well as practical help such as interview preparation.

Work experience is also an important part of year 12 giving you first-hand knowledge of a possible career pathwayyou might have in mind and an adviser from Careers Wales will also be available to provide information about work, education and training as needed.

Whatever individual pathway you return to the Sixth Form to pursue, when you come to consider moving on, theschool will provide you with the support you need to make good choices.

Introduction to Learning In the Sixth FormIf you decide to return to the Sixth Form you will find that there will still be a significant level of support providedby staff to help you meet your learning targets effectively. However, you are likely to find that you will be encouraged to work more independently than you have done during the previous years of your school experience. This will make learning in the Sixth Form a little more challenging but we trust it will be a challenge you will meetsuccessfully. This is meant to help you develop an effective approach to independent living as you move into adulthood.

Tutorial time will be part of your timetable. These periods will be supportedby a Learning Coach or classroom support assistants. Use this time to keepup with school or college work.

The Right to LearnThe Bridgend 14-19 Network believes that every young person has the right to learn. Young people should betreated equally, given the support they need to reach their full potential and be able to choose from a wide rangeof courses and qualifications which are valued by employers. Such courses and qualifications should develop theinterests and ambitions of young people, enabling them to achieve their learning goals and develop the knowledge, skills and understanding to give them the best possible opportunity of finding a successful future.

As a young person you have the right to pursue a learning pathway that meets your individual ability and aspirations and in the County Borough of Bridgend the opportunities for you to find the individual pathway that isright for you have never been so varied and accessible.

In general there are four levels of qualification available for post 16 learners in Bridgend.

Pre Entry Level- This is the equivalent of national curriculum outcome 1-3

Entry Level- This is the equivalent of national curriculum levels 1-3

Level 1 – This is the equivalent of grades D to G at GCSE

Level 2 – This is the equivalent of grades A* to C at GCSE

Level 3 – This is the equivalent of grades A to E at A Level (AS and A2)

When you are choosing subjects from this option booklet, it is important to note the level of each course to ensureyou are choosing appropriate qualifications that are right for you. This information can be found near the head ofeach subject description.

The right to learn is fundamental to the development of every young person and that is why Ysgol Bryn Castell andall the other Bridgend schools and College are working in partnership to offer a significant choice to all 14-19 yearolds.

Page 15: Ysgol Bryn Castell

The Choice to LearnWhen you are choosing courses and qualifications to study in the Sixth Form, there are a number of related factors

that can be useful in guiding your choice.

1 Knowing yourself – Being aware of your abilities, likes and dislikes, interests and the way you like to learn

will all help to make your choice.

2 Knowing your aims – If you have ideas for the work you would like to do in the future then you may want

to look for subjects that will help you work towards your desired career.

3 Knowing your subjects – It is important to know something of the content of the subjects you are

considering taking. You may be drawn to a subject because of its title or because you achieved a good grade in it

at GCSE or Entry level. However, a closer look at what the subject involves may reveal that it is not right for you.

Being aware of the full range of your subject options can help you to choose a combination of related subjects that

might best meet your learning needs.

4 Knowing your options – There are a wide variety of courses to choose from at different levels within

school but it is important to be aware that, whilst you return as a student in the school Sixth Form, you also have

access to wider range of courses that are offered outside of school. These are held in other schools in Bridgend or

in the College and you will find more detailed information about them as well as those run in school in the next

section which outlines learning opportunities in the Sixth Form.

Taking Part

NOCN Awards/ Certificates/ Diplomas –Skills Towards Enabling Progression Qualification (QCF).

The terms- Award/ Certificate / Diploma, basically indicates the qualification size and the number of hours a learner willneed to complete the qualification. The level indicates the learner’s ability.

The table below illustrates how the qualification is constructed:

Level Guided Points TotalLearning Credits

NOCN Entry Level Award inSkills for E3 30 3.5 3 Enabling Progression

NOCN Entry Level Certificate in Skills for E3 150 14 15Enabling Progression

NOCN Entry Level Diploma in Skills for E3 360 28 37Enabling Progression

NOCN Entry Level Certificate in Skills for 1 189 50 21Enabling Progression

NOCN Entry Level Diploma in Skills for 1 351 100 39Enabling Progression

Hours

Pupils can progress to a higher level as they complete a unit of work thus building up credits. Credits of learning are transferable and indicate the number of skills they have accomplished during their learning experiences. This system oflearning is a unique way of supporting all learners at the pace at which they learn and the skills they need to achieve fortheir career pathway.

A sixth form representative will also be chosen to have a voice on the school council. This allows sixth formers to have asay on the running of the school and what they would like to see happening to improve the facilities, environment andlearning opportunities available. Sixth formers are also encouraged to continue to be part of school sporting teams anduse the gym facilities. If there are other events that sixth formers would like to take part in as a group then learning coaches will try and organise this.

In Sept 2010 our coffee shop was opened for sixth form students to develop Customer Service Skills and to support ourYoung Enterprise initiative.

Enrichment / Extra Curricula Activities At Ysgol Bryn Castell we recognize the need for students to experience an extra curricula package designed to developsocial skills, team building, personal interests, or simply to try new things!
