Dear YPDR Friends and Sponsors,

I am writing you from Bantayan Island, an area of the Philippines that has endured unimaginable devastation in the aftermath of Typhoon Yolanda. This is a part of the world I have come to know and care for over the years, so when the storm hit, my friends Joseph Ferris III, Marshall Mayer, Katlyn Murray and I felt obligated to do our best to aid those in need. What began as a few friends looking to help has snowballed into a large-scale and organized relief and construction operation. We have a team of qualified construction, engineering, medical, and security experts already involved, hundreds more committed to joining the team, and a numerous other local and interna-tional non-governmental organizations partnering up with us to expedite and enhance our progress.

We are currently leading a rebuilding initiative, with an emphasis on implementing methods of sustainability. Our initial mission was to repair damaged schools and rebuild completely destroyed classrooms on the island using durable construction methods to withstand future storms and provide shelter for the entire island when major storms inevitably return. While that remains crucial, we are committing to new vital tasks every day.

We have developed a model for more storm resistant homes and are working in conjunction with our partner PAH and local carpenters to build homes, over 900 of which have already been built. We are also committed to provid-ing water and sanitation rehabilitation, hygiene promotion, marine life and livelihood restoration, emergency response, relief good distribution services, medical care in conjunction with our partner organization SAMU, and community outreach programs that raise awareness about health and environmental responsibility.

For these projects to come to fruition, increased funding is vital. We are reaching out to you in hopes that you might share our interest in helping rebuild this island. We value our help from abroad as much as that on the ground. We could not think of a more worthwhile cause for you to support. Serious sponsorship such as monetary donation, supplies, or any other forms of contributions will not be taken for granted. We are open to discussing ways to thank or promote you or your brand in a variety of ways.

The following brochure gives an overview of our organization and programs, as well as outlining how funds donated are spent by YPDR. You will realize it doesn't take very much to go a long way with what we are trying to do. We are happy to collaborate in any way you think you can be most helpful.

H I S T O R YYoung Pioneer Disaster Response (YPDR) started with the idea that the collective action of a dedicated group of individuals, each utilizing their own skills to their maximum potential, can facilitate positive change in the world. YPDR was founded by Christopher P. White, Joseph Ferris III, Marshall Mayer and Katlyn Murray. White and Ferris were running tours to destinations including North Korea and Burma for an extreme travel company when they heard about the devastation caused to the Philippines by Typhoon Haiyan, while Mayer was doing logistical work in Beijing, and Murray was helping film a documentary in China. White, who was has previously worked in commercial diving, oil spill response, wild land fire fighting, and construction man-agement, and Ferris, a 15-year veteran captain of a prominent oceanographic research vessel, felt the calling to lend a helping hand in any way they could. After assembling a skilled team of likeminded people, fundrais-ing through crowd-funding websites, and recruiting an international volunteer workforce, the group headed to Bantayan Island in the aftermath of the typhoon. YPDR has committed to a 3-year operation on Bantayan Island in order to facilitate the implementation of long-term sustainable solutions designed to empower and promote the prosperity and well-being of this disaster-affected community.

O V E R V I E WIn Partnership with Polish Humanitarian Action, YPDR is building 900 storm-strengthened homes for families in need.

H I G H L I G H T S1 // Built 8 model homes in Barangay Sungko, Barangay Kabangbang, Barangay Baigad, Barangay Kang-Kaibe, and Barangay Suba with the help of local carpenters.

2 // YPDR, in partnership with Polish Humanitarian Action (PAH), has finished building the first round of over 900 homes on Bantayan Island.

3 // Trained 105 local carpenter in storm-strengthening construction techniques.

4 // YPDR is currently expanding its housing operation to Eastern Samar, the first area hit by Typhoon Haiyan, in partnership with Da Edge Surf Camp and Rapid Crushing.

Utilizing structural improvements designed by students at the University of San Carlos, YPDR and PAH are committed to building storm – strengthened houses strong enough to withstand the force of another natural disaster while providing homes to as many families as possible.

4 // Conducted a hygiene promotion session and performed educational puppet shows on hygiene for over 6,000 children in the municipalities of Santa Fe, Madridejos, and Bantayan.

5 // Conducted damage assessments of the water supply and toilet facilities at 30 schools on Bantayan Island.

6 // 10,260 bars of soap have been distributed to students, local employees and their families.

O V E R V I E WUtilizing the oceanographic knowledge of YPDR’s president, Christopher White, a former commercial deep sea diver, and Director Joseph Ferris III, a veteran captain with over 15 years experience on a scientific research vessel, YPDR is restoring native marine habitats damaged or destroyed by Typhoon Yolanda through the implementation of artificial reefs.

2 // Conducted 7 underwater surveys to locate and map damaged reefs.

3 // Constructed over 100 marine domes that are designed to mimic native coral, support the replenish-ment of fish stocks and simulate coral regeneration. Each marine dome can produce over 50kg (110lbs) of fish every year!

4 // Deployed over 80 marine domes into the Visayan Sea, the marine biodiversity center of the world, that has experienced 98% reef destruction in recent decades.

5 // Built 1 floating bamboo raft for marine dome deployments.

6 // Collected over 20 kg of dead coral to recycle into new marine domes.

O V E R V I E WYPDR provides logistical support for maritime rescue operations utilizing the expertise of our Director, Captain Joseph Ferris III, a fifteen-year veteran captain of a scientific research vessel in addition to staff trained in maritime evacuations.

H I G H L I G H T S 1 // Instituted the island’s first ever emergency communication system to allow the municipalities and NGOs on Bantayan to coordinate effectively in future maritime and other emergencies.

2 // Participated in the emergency marine evacua-tion of more than 300 people from a stranded ferry off the Coast of Bantayan Island.

3 // Provided safe transport in for 4 children to Cebu for emergency medical treatment funded by YPDR donors.

O V E R V I E WKataw Handicrafts is a collective of the women of Bantayan Island in the Philippines pro-

ducing a variety of craft items all utilizing the natural products local on the island. "Kataw" means mermaid in Visayan, Bantayan's native language. Our workshop employs local train-ers to guide a team of women in creating various forms of handicraft, packaged and sold to people from all over the world. Kataw handicrafts started as a project to empower the women of this island, to allow women who face harsh employment prospects a chance to utilize their skills into a sustainable business. All the money raised from these sales go directly back to the women of Kataw, and YPDR's marine restoration program. Putting back into the ocean right at it's heart in the Philippines.
