Obituary - Norman Sharp

At the first meeting of their new season members of the Wakefield Society remembered one of their long serving members, Norman Sharp, who died in July, aged 82 after a lengthy illness which he bore cheerfully and with courage. Many kind and fond words were spoken about Norman who had been a regular attendee for years and was last year elected an Honorary Vice President. Not only a collector, Norman was also an amateur dealer specialising in postal history and had had a regular stand at the Morley and Dronfield Stamp Fairs until illness forced his retirement from that activity last year. He was also a regular at the annual YPA conventions and the Leeds Society Stamp Fairs, and had been a long-term member of the Yorkshire Postal History Society. A man with a pleasant and friendly attitude, though never one to seek the limelight, he was always helpful in searching for suitable items for the collections of fellow members and many have cause to thank him for some the gems he found and passed on. He leaves behind many fond memories and to his wife, Peggy, and to his family, we extend our deep sympathy and our gratitude for the life he shared with us. He would have been pleased to know that in his name over £250 was collected to be donated to the Wakefield Hospice.

Can - YOU - help By Stephen Dunderdale Looking through my box of un-mounted material I found a few items relating to the YPA Conventions.

The earliest was a printed cover for the 11th Convention at Fountains Hall Bradford, 25th May 1957, cancelled with a Bradford cds.

My next cover was from the 16th Convention at Victoria Galleries, Hull on 5th May 1962 but this was cancelled with a special pictorial hand stamp,

4

there was also an insert card with details of a 308 frame stamp exhibition in the gallery the following week

At the 19th Convention at Queen Anne Grammar School York, 24th April 1965, cancelled with a large single circle special convention hand stamp and a York Museum ‘Penny Black’ label.

Something similar for the 20th Convention at Rotherham, 21st May 1966, was a double circle special convention hand stamp. Other covers may have had printed insert cards, most cover I have are slit open or have blank cards as stiffeners.

5

The 23rd Convention at Granville College, Sheffield, 3rd May 1969, returned to a special pictorial hand stamp. Not been a collector of Special Event Postmarks I do not have a copy of the book giving details and thus am unable to complete a listing also remembering that a normal i.e., working cds or hand stamp will not be recorded. I do have later items from conventions at Hull and Bridlington to add to the list. So to my plea in the title: -

1. Does anyone know when the first envelope specially printed for the YPA Convention was used and the type of cancellation?

2. When was the first special hand stamp used and what type was it?

3. If number 2 was not pictorial when was the first pictorial hand stamp used?

4. What years or Conventions have special covers been produced and the types of cancellation?

This should allow me to list all items produced by host societies for publication in the newsletter if the editor is willing possibly with illustrations, how do you feel about such a project? It is after all part of the

6

7

history of the YPA and should be recorded in fact a textual list should be part of the YPA Handbook. To go even further should the YPA attempt to obtain example of each cover/cancel to form an archive type display of the material if you and the management committee agree. I will offer my services to write-up such a collection, under the scrutiny of over Federation Judges, to enable it to be used occasionally as part of the convention displays. Editors Note: My thanks to Stephen for his efforts to gather together the historical records of the YPA. I don’t have the room in this issue to include a full update on the progress of the creation of these archives. However, I would like to take the opportunity to thank the following people who have been collecting, copying, and/or sending me old YPA Convention booklets since the last issue of the YPA News: Rachel McHugh, Alwyn Peel, Malcolm Stockhill, Brian Wilkinson, and Frank Walton.

Harrogate Philatelic Society – Ladies evening 13 April, 2007 By Rachel McHugh The ladies of the Society presented Alphabet Soup for their special display to the Society members in April. The dictionary definition of alphabet states:

“A confusing or off-putting series, or mass, of strings of letter, especially the abbreviation of names of official bodies.”

We hoped that even if our display might seem to be “confusing” it would not be “off-putting”! We had a “mass” of exhibits from A-Z with: Alphabets, Bermuda and Bridges, Cuba and Canada, Daffodils, Egypt, France, Gibraltar, St. Helena, Ireland, Jersey and Japan, Kenya, Lesotho, Malaysia, Napoleon, Owls, Poland, Quercus (oaks), Rhodesia, Stamps on Stamps, Tristan de Cunha, USA, Volcanoes, Wales, X-Rays and St. Francis Xavier, Yachts and Zimbabwe. In the interval we served Alphabet Soup and rolls (yes, there were spaghetti alphabet letters in the soup!). This made a tasty alternative to tea and biscuits! Candy alphabet letters also proved very popular. The evening was voted a great success by all. It was one of those meetings where there was something for everyone. My thanks to all the ladies who took part so willingly.

Harrogate 2008Update

Arrangements for a spectacular 8th National Philatelic Exhibition are falling nicely into place. Over three-quarters of the required number of dealers have signed up, competitive entries are flowing in fast, specialist societies are arranging meetings to coincide, and publicity is occurring apace through fairs, magazines and auction catalogues.

Most especially the Court of Honour will be graced by magnificent material drawn from the Royal Philatelic Collection. This will be 20th Century Commonwealth material. It will be complemented by GB classics from the Large Gold Medal Collection of Adam Holyoake.

Harrogate2008 includes a thematic class and is accepting entries of 5 or 8 frames (80 or 128 sheets), in contrast to other national exhibitions. It is the last opportunity to qualify for the London 2010 International.

Harrogate 2008 : Volunteers Wanted A once in a lifetime event in Yorkshire is happening next May in Harrogate. The crème of British and overseas collections are homing in on North Yorkshire! Here is your chance to get fully involved! The 8th National Philatelic Exhibition will take place at Hall Q of the Harrogate International Centre on 2-3 May 2008. It is an opportunity for established members of philatelic societies forming the YPA family to take pride in warmly welcoming fellow philatelists, collectors, dealers and members of the public to Yorkshire. It is our chance to demonstrate we can run a highly professional, efficient and wholly enjoyable national exhibition! Volunteers to help with three groups of tasks are sought:

To put exhibits into the display frames on Thursday 1 May, and to remove material from the display frames at the end of the exhibition on Saturday 3 May in a strictly controlled, systematic and secure manner (for shorthand you may be known as “Mounters”);

To accompany and help dealers to their stands as they arrive at the start of the exhibition (you may be known as “Assistant Dealers”); and

To patrol the exhibition areas keeping an eye on the exhibits and viewers for stints of up to two hours on Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd May (you will be known probably as “Stewards”).

It is emphasized that none of these tasks will involve any heavy lifting as all frame carting and assembly, and any other heavy work, will be performed by a team of hired strong students. The stewards will supplement the security staff being employed. You are welcome to volunteer for more than one task on different days, or even at different times on the same day. Well, when else do you get the chance to sneak a preview, handle award winning displays, curry favours with dealers, or act as a plain-clothes vigilante? Forms on which you can say how and when you can help will be distributed via your YPA representative after the next YPA Management Meeting. Please do help collectively to make this National Exhibition a wonderful event!

Thank you. Harrogate Organising Team
