Leadership experiences... “The community centre staff gives us positive support and encourages me to be a leader” Leadership Program Participant Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation offers youth a wide range of recreation programs, leadership development skills and employment opportunities. This is a great way to meet new people, hang out with friends and learn about your community.

Programs
Youth ProgramsParks, Forestry and Recreation offers a wide range of exceptional programming for youth ages 13 to 24. Young people can participate in a wide range of recreation, leadership or volunteer opportunities. Each program is unique and supports youth in our communities. This is a great way for young people to meet and hang out with friends, build confidence and skills for the future, and learn about their community. Some of these programs may also provide a pathway to future employment. For programs available to youth, refer to the program listings and the fitness section for fitness classes.
Youth Leadership ProgramsThe City of Toronto offers a variety of youth leadership programs that support individual and community development. Our programs provide meaningful opportunities for young people to engage in their communities, explore their talents, and build their capacity to think critically, problem solve, and make decisions. Programs also promote awareness of health and wellness.For locations, refer to the program listings.
Leadership ProgramsLeadership programs teach teamwork, leadership, self-confidence, interpersonal and problem solving skills that will apply in all aspects of life. Leadership brochures are available at your local pool or visit toronto.ca/swim for more information.
Babysitting CourseLearn the skills needed to be an in-demand babysitter. Topics include infant care, nutrition, child development, child safety and emergency procedures. For locations, refer to the program listings.
Youth ClubsYouth clubs provide an opportunity for young people to learn and socialize with others. Gender specific and special interest youth clubs are offered at some locations. This program allows young people to socialize in a safe space, building self-esteem and confidence. For locations, refer to the program listings.
Youth Space (free)Community centres with a dedicated space provide the opportunity to meet other youth and ‘hangout’ in a safe environment. Activities may include: video games, jitoni, air hockey, or watching local sporting events. Contact your local community centre for hours of operation. Locations: John Innes CC, S.H. Community Partners with Youth Leadership Opportunities
Duke of Edinburgh’s AwardParks, Forestry and Recreation has partnered with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. The Award is a non-competitive and barrier-free program designed to encourage young people to develop positive habits and skills. It is open to anyone 14 to 25 years of age. Volunteer OpportunitiesLooking to give back to your community, enhance your resume, or gain a special skill? Look no further! From tree planting to special events, recreation to aquatics, you can play an important role. Share your expertise, develop new skills and meet your community! Toronto Sports LeadershipThe Toronto Sports Leadership Program is a partnership with Toronto District School Board, Toronto Catholic District School Board, the United Way and the YMCA. The program offers opportunities for students to gain skills and certifications in various sport-related streams. All programs are offered at no charge to successful applicants.
For the 2017/18 school year, students may apply to participate in the following: National Lifeguard Service Certification, Tennis Instructor Certification, Swim Instructor Certification, Community Coach Certification (basketball, soccer and Special Olympics), Aquafitness Instructor, Wading Pool Attendant Certification and Adapted and Integrated Leader. Interested students may contact their principal, physical education, guidance or student success teacher at their school or email [email protected].

Youth Councils (free)Youth Councils allow youth to have a voice in community, municipal and provincial decision-making. Join our successful Youth Councils and gain experience planning and organizing events, meet others and get volunteer hours. Youth will be involved in special events and have the opportunity to socialize with their peers in a positive, youth-friendly environment.

Youth Games Youth Games is a city-wide event that brings youth aged 13 to 16 together form across Toronto to compete in a variety of competitive sports and cooperative games. This event draws youth into recreation, while promoting fun, camaraderie and good sportsmanship; with the overall aim to provide a barrier-free experience that youth will remember for the rest of their lives.
Potential Events: • 100m Straight Wheelchair Race • Javelin Throw • Discus Throw • Sit Down Shot Put • Mini-Obstacle Course • Yoga • Standing Long-Jump (x2) • Tug-a-War
At this year’s event there will be 32 teams with over 400 participants.

The 2018 Youth Games is the perfect volunteer opportunity for youth looking to gain experience in event planning, facilitation, and working in a team setting. Volunteers help to promote our event by being a part of several projects leading up to the Youth Games. Join with a friend or on your own; meet other youth who would like to make a difference!

Youth Outreach Workers
Youth Outreach Workers’ priority is to connect youth to recreationYouth Outreach Workers are part of an inclusive outreach program that engages all youth, including: youth with a disability, youth who are newcomers, Aboriginal youth, LGBTQ youth, youth in conflict with the law and youth from at-risk neighbourhoods. Youth Outreach Workers improve outcomes for youth by advocating on their behalf, by providing recreation services and referring youth to other services, by fostering employment-readiness and leadership opportunities and by facilitating “for youth by youth” Advisory Councils.

Youth Week 2018
Mayor John Tory officially proclaims May 1-7, 2018 as Youth Week, to be celebrated and recognized across the city. Youth Week Toronto celebrates the abilities and talents of youth and highlights their civic engagement in the areas of recreation, arts and sports in diverse communities across Toronto.
STOMP Urban Dance Competition and ShowcaseThe STOMP Urban Dance Competition and Showcase is the largest annual youth event hosted by the Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation Division. Over 400 dancers and choreographers participated in the 2017 competition and showcase held at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts for an audience of 2,600 spectators.
Hundreds of children and youth ages 6 to 24 performed an eclectic array of urban dance styles including b-boy, breaking, hip hop, dancehall, jazz, ballet, Bollywood and contemporary dance. This year’s show included 40 acts with approximately 23 teams representing community centres. Performers also represented community dance groups, TDSB and TCDSB dance teams and professional dance academies. STOMP showcased urban culture including up and coming emcees, musicians, vocalists, rappers, dub poets and actors.
Join us on May 6 at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts for the 2018 edition of the STOMP Urban Dance Competition and Showcase.

Enhanced Youth Space (free)
The Enhanced Youth Space includes a five day weekly program, minimum three hours a day, 50 weeks a year. Part-time youth staff provide general supervision and skill-based instructions in programs such as fitness and wellness, dance and sports. This model also contains a youth referral, direct programming, events, initiatives and community-based partnership. Contact the facilities for hours of operation and programming.
