Music has a way of bringing inspiration to our lives in so many ways. Watching

our young musicians grow and develop in learning to speak this special language is one of my greatest rewards. I

hope you appreciate the significant commitment they have made in

preparing today’s performance for you.

I especially would like to thank the outstanding private teachers and parents for their support. They, as well as you, our audience, are all part of our youth symphony family. And we all have our parts to play. Your support is needed and appreciated.

This year the orchestras will collaborate with three other youth symphony organizations—the Orchestra in the Schools Program, the Santa Cruz County Youth Symphony, and YMM’s own South County Strings Program. Additionally, we will feature guest artists, and the winner of our annual concerto competition will perform with the Honors Orchestra in March. We are also expanding our staff to include more individualized coaching for the different sections of the orchestras.

We are very proud of our organization and hope that you will enjoy not only the music you hear today, but also watching and hearing our diverse group of students all working together.

Enjoy the Concert!

About YMM . . .

Youth Music Monterey provides music education and ensemble playing opportunities for youths throughout Monterey County. Our Youth and Honors Orchestras give students the opportunity to supplement their school and private music students with high-caliber ensemble playing experience—experience that helps develop knowledge of symphonic literature, as well as technical and artistic skill. Participation in our orchestras also helps students learn how to work with others from highly diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. Our orchestra members come from over 30 schools across northern Monterey County.

Our South County Strings Program, a collaboration between YMM and various school districts, provides the only string instruction available in South County. Currently, YMM serves schools in Bradley, Gonzales, Greenfield, King City, and Soledad.

About Orchestra in the Schools . .

Orchestra in the Schools (OITS) is in its 15th year of providing music notation instruction, beginning instrument instruction, and ensemble playing opportunities for students in grades 4 to 8. Younger string students may be accepted into the program with the director’s approval.

OITS includes local independent, home, and public school students. Students meet on Mondays at All Saints’ Day School to participate in small instrument groups or mixed ensembles according to their playing abilities. Music director James Paoletti and other local music teachers provide instruction and coaching.

OITS is intended to encourage the music interests and abilities of young students and to supplement school music

and/or private music studies. Many OITS students go on to participate in Youth

Music Monterey’s Youth and Honors Orchestras.
