A new generation of wildfowlartists seems to be making itselfknown, at least as far as results inthe 1985 Ward Foundation WorldChampionship Wildfowl CarvingCompetition might indicate. Topwinners in the 1985 World, heldApril 26-28 in Ocean City, MD,showed a definite youth movement, with 27-year-old Larry Barth ofStahlstown, PAwinning the $20,000purchase award in DecorativeLifesize, and Jett Brunet of Galliano,LA winning in Competition GradeFloating Waterfowl. Jett, 20, son offive-time World Champion TanBrunet, won the $10,000 purchaseaward with his pair of ruddy ducks.Gary Yoder, who won the $7500
purchase award in DecorativeMiniatures, is likewise not exactly agrizzled veteran, despite his growingcollection of blue ribbons. Gary is a25-year-old carver from Grantsville,MD.
It was one of the most sucessfulWorld Championships ever, both inthe quality of work displayed and inthe number of visitors who came toadmire the art. An estimated 10,000persons attended the annualcompetition.
According to Knute Bartrug, who has been chairman of the eventfor 15 years, 797 carvers entered2444 works in the competition.Bartrug said entrants included 217professionals with 797 carvings, 219amateurs with 730 pieces, and 361novices entering 917 works.
Bartrug said the theme for the1986 Decorative Lifesize andDecorative Miniatures competitionwill be Seabirds. The theme forFloating Pairs competition will beCinnamon Teal. The 1986 WorldChampionships will be held inOcean City on April 25-27.

With the printing of the lastissue of the “Ward Foundation’sMagazine, the Ward FoundationNews” has taken on a new format.Actually the Foundation isexpanding its services to themembership. The Ward FoundationNews which started out as anewspaper seven years ago is nowreturning to its newspaper format. This is the first issue of the new orshould I say old Ward FoundationNews.
The “News” will be printed fourtimes a year. This will enable all ofthe many wildfowl art lovers to stayon top of the many activities that arenow occurring throughout theUnited States. It seems appropriatethat the winners of the WorldChampionship Wildfowl CarvingCompetition are listed in this edition. If any of you have any news worthyitems about your carving club, thelatest Wildfowl Art Show or contestsplease send this information to us.We can probably use it in thenewsletter.
The magazine now has a newname and format. “The Wildfowl ArtJournal” now has a staff ofcolumnists writing on a regularbasis. With our new format weshould also be able to provide ourreaders with more in depth featurearticles about the top bird carversworking today, the latest informationon decoys, bird carving history andtechnical information on birdcarving.
The Ward Foundation wasestablished in 1968 to promoteNorth American Wildfowl Art and toestablish exhibition halls of wildfowlart. With the addition of the newnewsletter I hope we have taken onemore step toward achieving theFoundation’s goals.
