Youth Gang Trends, Bayshore Brittania area
Area of Concentration for West-End Youth Gang(charged, arrested, suspected, witness or victim in any GO)From 2000 to 2005
When reviewing the next slide a quick glance may give people the impression that youth gang crimes significantly increased in November and December 2004 and January 2005. There are some factors to consider when looking at this information;
· A significant strategy was put in place by Ottawa Police that directly impacted the number of contacts, arrest and charges related to gang activity in the area.
· Compliance and curfew checks on youth who had been criminally charges were increased as a direct result of gang related project work in the area, that again accounts for increases in the number of contacts, arrest for non compliance, and additional charges being laid.
· Youth identified as being gang members or who had gang associations were focussed on as part of a concerted effort to target gang activity in the area around that time.
· Some of the youth identified within the year, became of an age of criminal responsibility during that time, so statistics would have risen as a result.
· Gang activity is not unique or limited to Brittannia and Bayshore Communities (Bay Ward). Should you have any enquiries please contact the Youth and Adult Gang Section of the Ottawa Police Service, Sgt. John Medeiros at 613-236-1222 ext. 5349.
