Youth Advisory Council Committee Minutes Wednesday 2nd December 2015 Bunbury City Council Chambers Committee Terms of Reference The Youth Advisory Council Committee is to make recommendations to Council based on the following Terms of Reference; 1. To identify and advise on youth trends, gaps and opportunities in the Bunbury area. 2. To advise Council on the development of policies that is responsive to the needs of youth. 3. To engage with the young people of the Bunbury area to draw consultation and feedback on youth trends, opportunities and gaps to present to Council. 4. To assist and be actively involved in the ongoing development and delivery of youth targeted projects, programs and events. (Annually: Australia Day and National Youth Week) 5. To engage with the wider youth community to create/look for partnerships and opportunities to support young people in the areas of upskilling, youth leadership and the active involvement for youth driven initiatives. Minutes Wednesday 2nd December 2015 Bunbury City Council Chambers

Committee Terms of Reference

The Youth Advisory Council Committee is to make recommendations to Council based on the following Terms of Reference;

Youth Advisory Council Committee Minutes

Minutes of an ordinary meeting of the Youth Advisory Council meeting held at the City of Bunbury Administration Centre, 4 Stephen Street on Wednesday 2nd December 2015.

Members of the public to note that recommendations made by this committee are not final and will be subject to adoption (or otherwise) at a future meeting of the Bunbury City Council.

1. Declaration of Opening

The meeting was declared open by Community Development Officer Michele Grimston at 4:04pm. As this was the first meeting of the Youth Advisory Council Committee since the 2015 local government elections, the committee was required to elect a Presiding Member at this meeting.

Sean Smith was elected unopposed to the position of Youth Mayor.

Karl Sullivan and Stephen May each put themselves forward for the Position of Deputy Youth Mayor. Karl Sullivan was elected to this position by a secret ballot.

YAC members were asked to nominate themselves for particular areas of interest to encourage them to identify particular ways they can contribute to the team. Members were encouraged to nominate for more than one team if they felt they had the capacity.

ACTION: Community Development Officer Michele Grimston will develop descriptions of team activities based on number of people in each team and bring to the next meeting.

10.1.3 Application for Working With Children Checks

Councillor Betty McLeary, Deputy Youth Mayor Karl Sullivan and Jake Elson provided copies of their current working with Children Check cards.

Application forms were provided to Youth Mayor Sean Smith, Shani Szabo, Ebony Hribar, Councillor Sam Morris and Councillor Joel McGuinness.

All other members are currently under 18 and do not require a working with children check.

Action: Members requiring a working with children check need to complete their application and process it at the post office before the next meeting on Wednesday 3rd February 2016. Members will be reimbursed for the cost of their application if they provide their receipt to Community Development Officer Michele Grimston.

10.1.4 Participation in City of Bunbury Australia Day Celebrations

Elle Dixon outlined current plans for the City of Bunbury Australia Day Celebrations, and particularly YAC involvement in running a Colour War at the event. She suggested that this could involve some mentoring from Peter Cohen who has previously worked with YAC in order to develop skills and leadership in the process. There was general support for this idea.

ACTION: YAC members who want to be part of this event to attend a planning meeting on Wednesday 16th December at 4pm at the City of Bunbury.

10.3 Any other General Business

10.3.1 Willcox Brown Perpetual Trophy Members were encouraged to nominate a community group for the Willcox Brown Community Award by Community Development Officer Michele Grimston.

10.3.2 Young Leaders Program Members of the committee who are over 18 were encouraged to apply for the 2016 Young Leaders Program, a three day camp to develop leadership and teamwork skills. Action: eligible members should read the information pack and let Michele Grimston know if they are interested in attending by 10th December 2015.

10.3.2 Queens Commonwealth Essay Competition Jake Elson suggested that members may be interested in entering the Queens Commonwealth Essay competition.

This meeting was the final formal meeting for the Current Youth Advisory Council Committee.
