fice to protect their property from ravens,” Environment Minister Ken Cheveldayoff said. “These amend-ments will remove the permitting requirement and add ravens to the list of species that may be killed by a landowner, occupant or designate in order to protect their property or livestock.” “We support the actions the min-istry is undertaking to assist land-owners in managing problem ravens on their property,” Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities President David Marit said. Wolves are also causing problems for livestock owners in certain areas of the province. Big Game Manage-ment Licences are a long-established tool that has been used to address ungulate over-population, wildlife disease or damage to agricultural crops in localized areas. The amend-ment will enable hunters to harvest wolves where established criteria are met. “The Weekes area within Wild-life Management Zone 49 has been identified as the initial area for a wolf hunt pilot project, based on a high number of livestock losses and documentation by Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation,” Ch-eveldayoff said. “The ministry will focus on areas where we know we have problems, and we will contin-ue to explore other opportunities as more information becomes avail-able.” This change will not create a gener-al wolf hunting season; rather, it will focus on specific areas which meet established criteria and will only be considered after traditional control methods have failed to reduce live-stock losses. Trapping is the traditional means of controlling wolf populations. However, in some areas of the prov-ince, trappers are not able to con-

sistently harvest wolves, which can lead to larger populations and in-creased attacks on livestock. Adding wolf to the definition of a big game animal will enable the min-istry to test the effectiveness of using Big Game Management Licences to help control wolves in localized ar-eas with significant livestock preda-tion. “The Saskatchewan Wildlife Feder-ation (SWF) supports these amend-ments,” SWF Executive Director Darrell Crabbe said. “We recognize that effective wildlife management requires science-based, active man-agement on both game and preda-tor species to provide additional li-censed opportunities for hunters to harvest animals whose numbers are creating serious wildlife and live-stock issues.” Trappers will still be able to trap wolves as this amendment will give wolf a dual designation as a big game animal and fur bearer, similar to black bears. Hunters who harvest a wolf using a big game licence will also be able to sell the pelt under their hunting licence.

6 HISTORICAL FIGURES WHO MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE ExISTED by Evan Andrews

It’s not always easy to discern which famous figures of the past were real and which were merely the stuff of legend. Many historical accounts are incom-plete or clouded by myth, and those that do exist are often contradictory or even downright fictional. But while some of history’s most towering figures might be made up, other seemingly larger-than-life personalities might also be based on actual people. From Britain’s most beloved outlaw to the founder of Sparta, find out more about six historical figures whose existence remains up for debate.

1. KING ARTHUR The protector of Camelot is one of history’s most well known monarchs, but many scholars believe his story to be a legend on par with the Sword in the Stone. The brave King Arthur is tradi-tionally described as having repelled a Saxon attack on Britain in the 5th or 6th century. But while he supposedly won a series of 12 battles against the invaders, the great king is not named in the only surviving history of the conflict. In fact, a full depiction of Arthur did not surface until the 9th century, and an account of Lady Guinevere and the famous Knights of the Round Table only appeared with Geoffrey of Monmouth’s 12th century text “History of the Kings of Britain.” Even if the modern depiction of Arthur as a knight in shining armor is a myth built up by books like Sir Thomas Malory’s “Le Morte d’Arthur,” some historians still believe these tales were based on a real person. Among other candidates, they argue the Arthur legend may have been inspired by the exploits of the warrior king Ambrosius Aurelianus, the monarch Riothamus or perhaps even a Roman general named Lucius Artorius Castus.

2. PYTHAGORAS We all learned about the Pythagorean Theorem in math class, but a similarly elegant proof is not available for the exis-tence of its namesake. According to some accounts, the Greek thinker Pythagoras lived during the 5th and 6th century B.C. He is remembered as a philosopher and mathematician, but in ancient times he was better known as the spiritual father of a cult obsessed by numerology, the transmigration of the human soul and—quite bizarrely—the evils of eating beans. While Pythagoras’ hatred of legumes is well documented, there are no sig-nificant contemporary accounts of his life. All references to the great thinker—and perhaps also his famed ideas and formulas—came from his followers, who called themselves Pythagoreans. What stories we do have of Pythagoras are deeply inter-twined with myth and the supernatural. one tale describes him as possessing a golden thigh; another declares he was the son of the god Apollo. For some, these lies and contradictions hint that Pythagoras was simply an exaggerated or even fictional leader concocted by the members of a religious sect. Even if Pythagoras did exist, he probably wasn’t the first to discover his famous theorem—evidence shows the Egyptians may have divined the formula much earlier. watch for more in the next few days ...

A drunk walked into a tavern, sat down at the bar. He placed a small cardboard box on the bar, and ordered a beer. When the

beer came, he opened the box, pulled out a tiny piano and bench and set them on the bar, then ordered another beer. When the beer came, he reached into the box, pulled out a frog, sat him on the piano bench and said, “PLAY”. The frog immediately began

to play the piano. It played all the favor-ites, and some classical and then launched into contemporary jazz. The man ordered another beer, and when it came he reached

into the cardboard box and pulled out a little white mouse. He set this mouse on top of the

piano and said “SING”. The frog began to play the piano and the mouse began to sing, first some ‘oldies but goodies’, then all of the current favorites.A man at the bar who was watching all of this approached the drunk

man and offered to buy this little outfit that he had. After a bit of negotiating, the drunk

man agreed to sell it to the man for $500. The man gathered everything into the little card-

board box and ran out the door before the drunk could change his mind. The bartender had been watching all of this goings on and

said to the drunk “You damned old fool! You just sold that little outfit you had for $500

and you could have made millions off of it!” The drunk laughed heartily and replied “I am not the fool, the guy who bought it is.

Do you really think I would have sold that if that mouse could really sing?”The bartender responded “What do you mean, I stood right here and listened to that mouse sing!” “The joke is on you and the guy who bought that

outfit my friend”, chuckled the drunk. “That mouse can’t sing. The frog is a ventriloquist!”

wearing shabby clothes.”“Amazing,” said the second, “I just got divorced for the very

same reasons.”
