“This history making project sets a new standard for innovative and creative ways to finance and build infrastructure projects in Saskatoon,” Atchison said. “More importantly, this bridge will connect neighbourhoods in a way city leaders envisioned decades ago. We are also fulfilling a goal of our Strategic Plan- to provide better ways to move around Saskatoon and improve the quality of life for everyone in our community.”

Construction began in 2010 on the Circle Drive South Project, which is the largest single project in the City’s history at an estimated cost of $300 million. It is cost shared between the Federal Government ($96 million), the Provincial Government ($98.5 million), the City of Saskatoon ($100 million) and the Rural Municipality of Corman Park ($200,000).

The Circle Drive South Project involves:• a new six-lane south bridge;• five new interchanges (Idylwyld Drive,

Lorne Avenue, Valley Road, 11th Street, and Preston Avenue South);

• 10 kilometres of freeway/expressway from Clarence Avenue to Clancy Drive;

• access requirements of surrounding lands;

• three railway grade separations;• sound attenuation walls;• relocation of utilities; and,• pedestrian and cyclist pathways.Major benefits include the shorter

commuting distances for traffic, and a 35% reduction in traffic using the Senator Sid Buckwold Bridge at afternoon rush hour.

In March 2010, City Council awarded the design/build contract to Graham Flatiron Joint Venture. Site preparation and construction began in spring 2010. The Preston Avenue South interchange will open in September 2013.

The Circle Drive Roadway officially opened to traffic at 8:00 p.m. Thursday night.

“Let’s say you have an abundance of zuc-chini, but you’re fresh out of apples.

You can sneak this on the kids and they’ll never know.”

ingredients: • 5 cups zucchini - peeled, seeded, and chopped • 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice• 3/4 cup white sugar • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg • 4 cups all-purpose flour • 1 1/2 cups white sugar• 1 1/2 cups butter, chilled • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

directions

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Coat a 9x13 inch baking dish with cook-ing spray. Place zucchini and lemon juice in a me-dium saucepan. Cook, covered, over medi-um-low heat, stirring occasionally, for about 15 minutes, or until tender. Stir in 3/4 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and nutmeg. Simmer 1 minute longer, remove from heat, and set aside. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and 1 1/2 cups sugar. Cut in butter until the mix-ture resembles coarse crumbs. Birthdate of Isabel Allende, author;Mary-Louise Parker, actress; SamWorthington, actor.

Acting on tip from a Dutch informer, the Nazi Gestapo captures 15-year-old Jewish diarist Anne Frank and her family in a sealed-off area of an Amsterdam warehouse. The Franks had taken shelter there in 1942 out of fear of deportation to a Nazi concentration camp. They occupied the small space with another Jewish family and a single Jewish man, and were aided by Christian friends, who brought them food and supplies. Anne spent much of her time in the “secret annex” working on her diary. The diary survived the war, overlooked by the Gestapo that discovered the hiding place, but Anne and nearly all of the others perished in the Nazi death camps. Annelies Marie Frank was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, on June 12, 1929. She was the second daughter of Otto Frank and Edith Frank-Hollander, both of Jewish families that had lived in Ger-many for centuries. With the rise of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler in 1933, Otto moved his family to Amsterdam to escape the escalating Nazi persecution of Jews. In Holland, he ran a successful spice and jam business. Anne attended a Montessori school with other middle-class Dutch children, but with the German invasion of the Netherlands in 1940 she was forced to transfer to a Jewish school. In 1942, Otto began arranging a hiding place in an annex of his warehouse on the Prinsengracht Canal in Amsterdam. On her 13th birthday in 1942, Anne began a diary relating her everyday experiences, her relationship with her family and friends, and observations about the increasingly dangerous world around her. Less than a month later, Anne’s older sister, Margot, received a call-up notice to report to a Nazi “work camp.” Fearing deportation to a Nazi concentration camp, the Frank family took shelter in the secret annex the next day. One week later, they were joined by Otto Frank’s business partner and his family. In November, a Jewish dentist—the eighth occupant of the hiding place—joined the group. For two years, Anne kept a diary about her life in hiding that is marked with poignancy, humor, and insight. The entrance to the secret annex was hidden by a hinged bookcase, and former em-ployees of Otto and other Dutch friends delivered them food and supplies procured at high risk. Anne and the others lived in rooms with blacked-out windows, and never flushed the toilet during the day out of fear that their presence would be detected. In June 1944, Anne’s spirits were raised by the Allied landing at Normandy, and she was hopeful that the long-awaited liberation of Holland would soon begin. On August 1, 1944, Anne made her last entry in her diary. Three days later, 25 months of seclusion ended with the arrival of the Nazi Gestapo. Anne and the others had been given away by an unknown informer, and they were arrested along with two of the Christians who had helped shelter them. They were sent to a concentration camp in Hol-land, and in September Anne and most of the others were shipped to the Auschwitz death camp in Poland. In the fall of 1944, with the Soviet liberation of Poland underway, Anne was moved with her sister Margot to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in Germany. Suffering under the deplorable conditions of the camp, the two sisters caught typhus and died in early March 1945. The camp was liberated by the British less than two months later. Otto Frank was the only one of the 10 to survive the Nazi death camps. After the war, he returned to Am-sterdam via Russia, and was reunited with Miep Gies, one of his former employees who had helped shelter him. She handed him Anne’s diary, which she had found undisturbed after the Nazi raid. In 1947, Anne’s diary was published by Otto in its original Dutch as Diary of a Young Girl. An instant best-seller and eventually translated into more than 50 languages, The Diary of Anne Frank has served as a literary testament to the nearly six million Jews, including Anne herself, who were silenced in the Holocaust. The Frank family’s hideaway at Prinsengracht 263 in Amsterdam opened as a museum in 1960. A new English translation of Anne’s diary in 1995 restored ma-terial that had been edited out of the original version, making the work nearly a third longer.

SASkATCHEWAN’S HuNTiNG, ANGLiNGANd TRAPPiNG LiCENSiNG SYSTEM iS FuLLY oPERATioNAL

gov.ca - Saskatchewan’s new online automated Hunting, Trapping and An-gling Licence (HAL) system is now fully operational. Beginning August 6 all game bird, big game and big game draw licences will be available for purchase. “Over the last several years, the ministry has consulted with many hunters, anglers, trappers and issuers, and has heard that the current system needs to be updated,” Environment Minister Ken Cheveldayoff said. “The fact that hunters and anglers have purchased over 170,000 licences, demonstrates that HAL is meeting the needs of the public.” There are three options to purchase licences through this system:• online through your personal computer any time; • through private issuers, Ministry of Environment and select provincial park offices; or• by phone at 1-855-848-4773 (8 am to 9 pm) Customers who want to purchase a big game licence online from home, must first obtain a convenience pack of seals to complete the transaction. A convenience pack of six seals is free and can be obtained from a private issuer, a Ministry of Environment office or select provincial park office be-ginning August 6. Once you have them, you can complete your transactions online, 24 hours a day. Only one HAL account is required per person. If you have already creat-ed an account for angling or the Big Game Draw, you do not need another account. Just access your account and make the purchase. Although August 1 was originally noted as the date hunting licences would be available for sale, the ministry delayed the opening of sales to en-sure there is a seamless administrative transition from the sale of angling licences to the sale of hunting licences. Last year the ministry issued over 200,000 hunting licences and 200,000 angling licences. This activity contributes about $40 million to the GDP, and over 2,500 direct jobs, benefiting rural areas and helping to grow local economies. For more details about HAL, a listing of licence issuers, and hunting and angling guides, visit www.environment.gov.sk.ca/licences.

gov.ca - Haying progress continues for Saskatchewan livestock producers with 82 per cent of the 2013 hay crop cut and 60 per cent baled or put into silage, according to Saskatchewan Ag-riculture’s weekly Crop Report. Rain was reported in most areas during the past week, which has re-duced hay quality in the swath. Seven-ty per cent of the provincial hay crop is rated as good in quality. The majority of crops are in good to excellent condition. Eighty-four per cent of spring wheat, 82 per cent of canola, 81 per cent of lentils and 88 per cent of peas are in good to excellent condition. Most parts of the province received varying amounts of rain last week ranging from trace to 43 mm. Disease, insects and localized flooding caused the majority of crop damage. Grass-hoppers and bertha armyworm have been reported in some areas. Across the province, topsoil mois-ture on crop land is rated as nine per cent surplus, 78 per cent adequate, 12 per cent short and one per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as seven per cent sur-plus, 80 per cent adequate and 13 per cent short. Farmers are busy haying, controlling insects and getting ready for harvest.
