“With challenging times foreveryone, the pressure is on tomake your property assets work ”

A day in the life of Phil KellyDirector at Petty Chartered Surveyors

accommodate a small mobile sales kiosk or even an ATMor vending machine.

If tenants are in agreement, the space can be used wiselyand a small sweet seller would increase the morale offamily shoppers given the collapse of the biggest highstreet Pick ‘n’ Mix retailer and an ATM or vendingmachine would attract footfall to your site too.Alternatively, why not rent the wall space to a buddingartist or photographer? Not only is this aestheticallypleasing but you would receive additional income as wellas increasing footfall which could generate further sales.

Telecoms – Sought after locations for telecom operatorsrarely have any intrinsic value so if you have a flat roofon the top of a tall building, the edge of a field on a farmor some landscaped area in an industrial estate, why notturn this into an income generator? The tenant will beexpected to sign a full repairing lease taking away anymaintenance burden so this could be a ‘win-win’ situationfor part of your property that goes unused.

Subletting – Don’t sit there with surplus space gatheringdust, but look at some unconventional alternatives togenerate a fee. Short term lets, sharing meeting roomsand pooling together services with other tenants areideas that will see the savings starting to add up quitequickly.

Business rates – Is your assessment correct? Did youcheck it or accept it as accurate? Have your rates billchecked by a Chartered Surveyor and make sure you arenot overpaying. It may be that you have under usedsections of your property and vacating them couldreduce your rates liability.

For further information or advice contactPhil Kelly on 01282 417778 or [email protected]. Visit www.pettycommercial.co.uk

If anyone is like ‘part of the furniture’ or ‘the fixture andfittings’ at Petty’s then Phil Kelly fits the bill perfectly!Phil has been a partner in Petty Chartered Surveyors

since 1991, having joined the firm in 1989.

Throughout his career, Phil has been instrumental inoverseeing commercial and residential valuation work on behalfof lenders and private clients and brings a wealth of knowledge

and expertise to his role. Testament to hiscapability is that he was part of the team whichensured Petty retained its position on theNational Valuers Panel for both HSBC andBarclays which was a huge coup when HSBCreduced their panel from 900 to just 90 some twoyears ago.

With no two days ever the same, Phil isregularly on the road inspecting and valuing

properties across theregion providing acomplete service forclients which can alsoinclude rating andcompulsory purchase matters.

As we caught up with Phil, he had someadvice on how businesses can work

smarter in the current climate and is keen forpeople to take stock of their situation and maketheir property assets work harder for them. Hesaid: “With challenging times for everyone, thepressure is on to make your property assets workharder but with a little thought, there are somequick win ideas open to many people that willultimately make a difference to you financially andease the burden.”

Advertising – Flank walls and open land are oftenideal sites for advertising hoardings, signage andbanners so if you have a property that fits the bill, this is worth considering. A hoarding can add to theproperty income and hopefully to capital value butyou will need to check with the planners first. Asthese advertising panels are managed and maintainedby the hoarding company, there are no ongoingmaintenance issues either.

Walkways – Many shopping and office complexes havesufficient circulation space and could easily

Roughlee Old HallConstructed in 1596 and steeped in local history, Roughlee Old Hall is set in a commanding position in the delightfulhamlet of Roughlee close to Pendle Water, and over the years it has been common belief that the famous PendleWitch, Alice Nutter, once lived here.

This impressive stone built property with its mullion windows, impressive Inglenook feature fireplace with originalbeehive bread oven, is set in an idyllic location approximately six miles north of Burnley in this popular Pendlesidearea.

Bordering on open fields, the property offers scope for a prospective buyer to personalise.

Page 12: Your Village Life Issue 7

Much mystery and speculation surrounds the notorious tale of the PendleWitches, and yet more fuel has been added to the fire with thediscovery of an ancient cottage by United Utilities engineers in October

last year.

The engineers were working on the site close to the Lower Black Moss reservoirnear Barley when they discovered the ruins of a cottage thought to date back tothe 17th Century. The ruins had been hidden under a grassy knoll, which since itslast inhabitants left, had provided a protective layer, similar to the layer of ashwhich preserved Pompeii against the elements and decay meaning the remainswere discovered in a remarkably well-preserved condition.

Archaeologists have discovered evidence that suggests the cottage housedresidents right up to 19th century, with items such as a Victorian range still in situas well as crockery, a tin bath and a bedstead remaining. But with suchremarkable preservation, there are layers of history still remaining with thecottage offering a ‘microcosm’ of the history of the area.

It is however the gruesome discovery of a mummified cat which has tantalisedthe imaginations of local historians. Traditionally thought to be a talisman toprotect against evil spirits the cat was found entombed in the walls of a sealedroom in the cottage. Coupled with the location in the shadow of Pendle Hill, historians are speculating that the cottage may have links the long lost site ofMalkin Tower offering a spookier link to the tale of the Pendle Witches.

Your Village Life: You are a born and bred Burnley Belle and star of stageand screen but do you get to come back home often?

Julia Haworth: I certainly am! I was born in Burnley and lived there until Iwent to study Drama at Manchester University in 1998 so almost 20 years inthe area. It is no wonder I have strong memories and will always consider ita home from home. My family and a lot of my friends still live in Burnley so Ireally am no stranger to it and in fact my husband, Jon, is potentially the mostavid Clarets fan ever too so there is no keeping us away!

YVL: We are lucky to have so many wonderful eateries on our doorstep, where do you like to go when you are in the area?

JH: I do love catching up with my family and so top of my list is to enjoy anice family meal at my parents’ house. If we are going out then you can’t gowrong with the Topiary Restaurant at The Fence Gate too. There is a greatmenu selection and they are very welcoming so we always have a lovely time.

YVL: What brought you back to Burnley for your wedding in 2006?

JH: My favourite area of Burnley is undoubtedly Towneley Park. Towneley waslike my second home growing up, and when Jon proposed and we begandiscussing wedding reception venues, there was no question for either of uswhere it would be. For people outside of the Burnley area, Towneley Hall isquite an undiscovered gem.

YVL: What was the most memorable part of the day?

JH: The most memorable part of our wedding was marrying my wonderfulhusband in front of all the people we love.

YVL: Away from acting, what would make a perfect day for you?

JH: When I'm not working I relax by spending time with my family and friends.I love cooking and baking, especially baking cakes with our 3 and a half yearold daughter Sophia. Maybe it’s the actor in me but I also love reading andanything creative like painting and drawing, home interiors, photography, going to the theatre, and keeping fit.

We meet up withBurnley Belle...Julia Haworth

Fact FileFull name: Julia Louise HaworthBorn: 27 August 1979 in BurnleyEducation: St Christopher's C of E High School in Accrington and later Nelson and Colne College and also Burnley Youth Theatre before graduating from Manchester University with a degree in Drama.Married: She married Jon Wormald in May 2006. Together they have one daughter, Sophia Elizabeth.Best Known For: Playing the lovable Claire Peacock in

Coronation Street.

YVL: You started acting at a very young age, how did that come about?

JH: I literally fell into acting with a chance audition at Burnley Youth Theatrefor a children's drama series called Three, Seven, Eleven when I was just13. Nineteen years later, I still love my job, and the variety of work iswonderful. I have been very fortunate to work on some of the best TVdrama’s including Heartbeat, Monarch of the Glen, Peak Practice,Merseybeat and of course eight years with Coronation Street.

YVL: Now that you have left ‘Weatherfield’, what does the future hold?JH: My hopes for the future are personally - health and happiness for myfamily, and professionally to carry on doing good solid work on stage, ontelevision, on the radio, and perhaps one day a film. A few years ago I wroteand produced my first short film called 'Blink' and hope to do more of that.I would love to write for television.

YVL: You now live in Manchester but what makes the perfect home foryou?

JH: For us the ideal family home is one in which we are all able to betogether. The kitchen diner is great for us as we can cook, Sophia canplay, and our guests can sit and relax. I once read somewhere that youknow within 11 seconds of viewing a house whether it’s for you - I definitelyagree with that! I love watching property programmes, anything with SarahBeeny or Kirsty and Phil.

She graced the cobbles of the nation’s most famous street,Coronation Street as the lovable Claire Peacock and now, JuliaHaworth takes time out to share her secrets on home life and

why there was only ever one place she would get married by returningto her roots in her home town of Burnley.

It’s an interesting question. The information super highway iscertainly the greatest tool ever invented as a point of reference. Butdoes it really replace the good old ‘human touch’?

During the madness that is Christmas, I was given the job of selectinga suitable camera for my particularly technophobic in-laws. A simpletask you may think, type ‘digital camera’ into Google, click on the bestvalue product and wait for it to arrive.

However, I was hit by a myriad of different options, HD or not HD,hard drive or memory card, optical or digital zoom and a whole raft ofother choices. The price was also somewhat of a puzzle, how couldtwo devices that look identical differ in price so alarmingly? It’s fair tosay that after looking at what felt like a hundred or so cameras I wasfinding more questions than answers. At this point I retreated to thesafety of the armchair and hoped that whilst watching the football onTV they may show an advert that told me what to buy! Less than aweek to go before Christmas the camera dilemma was still high onmy agenda. Little did I realise that salvation was at hand. Whilstpicking up some of those other little ‘bits’ we all seem to shop for inBurnley town centre, I happened on a little shop selling almostexclusively ‘guess what’?

Yes, indeed. In our very own town a veritable Aladdin’s cave ofcameras, and all described perfectly by a friendly, local chap whoseonly role in life seemed to be to make my problem go away. I wasquickly pointed in the right direction and made my purchase.

Did it cost more than the internet prices? Maybe a little, but nothingsignificant, and without doubt less hassle. Next stop Weatherspoonsthen.

Now I know what you are all thinking. What is the mortgage guy doingbanging on about cameras in a property magazine?

Clearly, it’s the service issue that is the point. If we go through all thistrying to buy a simple camera for about £100, why on earth do we notlearn from it when making the single most expensive purchase inmost of our lives?

The internet is a marvellous tool. But the value of any product ishugely enhanced by some helpful guidance. Believe me, going back tomy camera experience the difference between the gifted amateur andthe absolute professional when demonstrated is a yawning chasm!

Companies like Petty’s and Mortgages 65 pride ourselves on friendly, well qualified people with not only a comprehensive knowledge oftheir markets, but also the locality.

You will already be aware of any potential stampduty you will have to pay in relation to the propertyyou are purchasing. But are there any tax liabilitieson the property you are selling?

Capital gains tax (CGT) needs to be considered when you sell a homethat is not your main residence. Your main residence is exempt fromCGT when you sell it, but you need to take advice if you have not livedin the property as your main residence throughout the entire time ofownership. Various rules allow some periods of temporary absenceto be disregarded and in fact this can be used to your advantage.

Take for example a couple who already have their own homes andhave been living between them, then decide to marry and movepermanently into one property whilst retaining ownership of thesecond property. They have up to 2 years to declare to HMRC which istheir principal residence. There can be important tax implications inthis decision, so take professional advice!

CGT normally applies when you sell or dispose of the property that isnot your main residence, and it is worth more than you paid for it. Butyou should note that:

1. you can deduct some of the costs of buying, selling and improving the property

2. you may be able to set off any loss on the property against other chargeable gains

3. but if you sell the property at below market value, for example to another family member, you may be liable for CGT

4. you may consider transferring property into the name of your husband, wife or civil partner without having to pay CGT. This couldmitigate any tax liability as the first £10,600 of total taxable gains for each of the people owning the property are tax free in the tax year 2011-12. This can represent a significant opportunity for tax planning.

Please note that different rules apply to holiday homes.

We firmly recommend that you seek specific advice relating to yourown circumstances.

Richard FarnworthSolicitor

There are an increasing number of people trying to do their ownconveyancing in recent times which in the main is due to a rise inself-help and ‘DIY’ conveyancing resources. There is nothing stoppinganyone from doing their own conveyancing but there are manypitfalls that you should consider as the consequences of getting itwrong could be costly.

When you hire a conveyancing solicitor they will make clear at thestart, in their terms and conditions, what they will and won't do onyour behalf. Their main remit is to ensure that the title to theproperty you are purchasing is good and marketable. However alarge part of the role is to coordinate all the parties involved in thetransaction towards the final transfer of the property to your name. Therefore they will correspond on your behalf with these parties withthe aim of achieving this goal. Conveyancing is a complicated processwhich involves many small but significant steps. A procedure has tobe followed to make sure all paperwork has been filed correctly withthe relevant authorities and funds are released at the right time.

A conveyancing solicitor offers you an added level of protection if theyconduct the transaction on your behalf. Their experience withhandling many different types of transaction gives them theknowledge to spot potential problems which may crop up. Examplesof these types of problem could be old paperwork which hasn't beenregistered properly, clauses in documents put in by previous ownersor problems with boundaries exposed by plans of the property. Thislist is by no means exhaustive. An experienced conveyancer wouldspot problems like these and bring them to your attention so youcould make the best decision while there is time to make your mindup.

When transferring a property all the parties involved would need tobe checked in case they are trying to commit crimes under the guiseof a property transaction. Your solicitors would run all the necessarychecks with the relevant institutions to give the best possible chanceof spotting people involved in this type of behaviour. This gives youpeace of mind that you won't be losing out if something untowardhappens. Conveyancing solicitors are required by law to have validprofessional indemnity insurance which covers their clients for anyloss incurred in any eventuality to give the most stress freetransactions. Law firms are also regulated by a professional bodycalled the ‘Solicitors Regulation Authority’ so, if you have any reasonto complain, your complaint will always be answered to yoursatisfaction.

During your move you will likely have many other things to worryabout. Maybe you haven't found your house yet and need to go househunting around the area to which you want to move. Once you havefound your dream property and started the conveyancing you willneed to arrange removals. Maybe the survey reveals that repairs maybe needed on the new property and you want to arrange for the workto be done straight after completion. In addition you probably won'ttake time off work while moving house so it will be a busy time. Doyou really have the time and expertise required to go through all thepaperwork as well?

Wallpaper is a fantastic way to add a hint of personality to therooms of your home. Not for followers of fashion but for truelovers of style, wallpaper can take effort to work with but is

well worth the time and effort spent on applying it. Not only does itoffer a luxurious finish to walls, it can add drama to rooms withoutperiod features as well as providing a sense of warmth and softeningthe acoustics of larger rooms or rooms with hard flooring.

Here are our top tips on selecting the right pattern for you:

• Feature walls are a great way of using big bold patterns to add drama to a room. As with choosing curtains, keeping a pattern to one wall allows you to opt for something unusual and exciting whilst keeping the look subtle and stylish. When creating a feature wall remember you don’t have to match the paint for the rest of theroom to the wall paper, consider co-ordinating the paint and wallpaper colour instead.

• Big patterns in bold colours whether used on a feature wall or throughout, work best in rooms with minimal furniture so look greatin a dining room or bedroom.

• If you prefer to wallpaper your entire room you can still use patterned prints, and by opting for pale tones you will maintain thesense of light and space within the room. Choosing a wallpaper with a lustre finish will also help to bounce light around the room.

• Using large prints with a contrasting colour way gives the optical illusion of the pattern advancing towards you, helping to make verylarge rooms seem more intimate.

Remember no matter what look you opt for, preparation is key to afantastic finish. Ensuring your walls are in good condition and properlylined will enhance the finished look, stopping any imperfections fromshowing through. If you are planning to paint or stain your woodworkdo this before you paper to avoid ruining the new look with splashesand flecks of gloss!

Set within the impressive shadow of Pendle Hill, lies the tranquil village ofSabden. Although it was only officially born in 1904 when it became a civilparish in its own right, Sabden wears its extensive history on its sleeve with

a mixture of period and modern properties characterising its landscape, thecentre of town being a conservation area.

Over 1000 years ago, the area on which Sabden lies was the playground ofNorman Lords who hunted the deer and roe that roamed freely on the wild andrugged landscape that was Pendle Forest and the Sabden Valley. Over time thelandscape, which is a designated an area of outstanding natural beauty, evolvedwith farms springing up and expanding before the Industrial Revolution broughtthe cotton industry and employment in the mills. Today the village has returnedto a peaceful haven for homebuyers looking to purchase a home away from thehustle and bustle of town life.

Work in the mills was a key source of employment for Sabden during the 19thcentury, although you could be forgiven for thinking that the weavers createdmore than textiles, with the much-loved story that parkin was ‘woven’ using oatsand treacle from the local treacle mine! Made famous by the children’s TV series‘The Treacle People’, it is believed that boggarts lived beneath the ground miningand feasting on treacle and the source of the tale still characterises thesurrounding countryside with the strange soil mounds, supposedly the entranceto the mines, clearly visible to all who explore the area.

With the treacle boggarts and Pendle witches thankfully confined to the past,Sabden is now a warm and welcoming community of around 1300 residents. The village has an abundance of amenities including two primary schools and isalso within the catchment area of Clitheroe Royal Grammar school, RibblesdaleSchool for Technology and Applied Learning and St Augustine’s RC High School, making it an ideal choice for families.

A spotlight on SabdenWith a village green, village football club and bowling club, coupled with anarray of events taking place through the year, not least a duck race along thefamous Sabden Brook, and bonfire and firework display in November, Sabden is aquintessential English village. With the added bonus of its superb location toPendle Hill offering a variety of walks, para-gliding, horse-riding and even skiingat Pendle Ski Slope, Sabden is the place to be for sports enthusiasts and lovers ofthe outdoors.

Sabden is well connected with the nearby town of Clitheroe just a few minutes’drive away, however residents have a range of conveniences on their doorstep, including a cafe, post office, and a late shop as well as its own pub, the PendleWitch and the Wellsprings restaurant perched upon the Hill.

As its first barrel rolled off the line in 1865,who would have thought that MoorhousesBrewery would go on to become one of

the industry’s best loved cask ale brewers with araft of award winning ales to its name.

From its recently expanded and refurbished£4.2m brewing complex in Burnley, MoorhousesBrewery is certainly a ‘Pride of Pendle’ itself. With the opening of the 1000-barrel-a-weekcapacity complex last year, a spacious visitorcentre complete with bistro-bar was alsolaunched to attract both private and public eventsto the Burnley brewery.

Growing year on year and with David Grant atthe helm, it is exciting times for the brewer thatretains traditional methods combined withmodern, state-of-the-art technology. David andhis team are keen to maintain this momentumwith the roll out of more fine ales as well asmaking them more accessible to the public withthe ales now on sale in Tesco, Asda andSainsbury’s as well as long term stockistsMorrisons and Booths.

Their ‘Famous Five’ ales are to be supported bysome new additions to the pumps over thecoming months with the timely ‘Running Wild’ale being created to support the Olympics and‘400’ to commemorate the 400th anniversary ofthe Pendle Witches trial amongst them.

More celebrations are afoot as the brewery is alsoset to hold a number of events and festivals to

WE PULL A PINT WITH MOORHOUSES mark its recent expansion. The brewer will holdthe first event on 16/17 March. It will featurechampion brews from the annual Camra(Campaign for Real Ale) Great British BeerFestival (GBBF) and the Brewing IndustryInternational Awards (BIIA) to highlight the bestof British craft cask ales – the only growing sectorof the UK beer industry.

A July festival (27/28) will feature ales from agrowing band of brewsters (female brewers). Itwill include a special tasting evening for femaledrinkers led by top beer writer Melissa Cole. ForOctober a festival will mark the Halloweenseason and the 400th anniversary of the trial andexecution of the legendary Pendle Witches. Entryfor the festivals is £3.00 (Camra members £2.00)and advance tickets are available from thebrewery – telephone 01282 422864.

Managing Director, David Grant said: “Thisambitious programme of festivals will celebratethe major commitment we have made in thefuture of the cask ale industry and focus attentionon this growing market. The new visitor centremeans we are now able to cater for both privatefunctions, such as weddings and corporatecelebrations, as well as large public events. Thefestivals will showcase what we have to offerwhile giving both enthusiasts and newcomers tocask a chance to enjoy some of Britain’s topbrews.“Our brewsters’ festival will highlight theconsiderable contribution that female brewers are

now making to the growing cask ales market at atime when cask is rapidly growing in popularityamong women. And, of course, as the nation’saward winning ‘Halloween Brewer’ we wish tomark the 400th anniversary of the Pendle Witchesstory appropriately.”

To Pardon or Not to Pardon…that is the question!

Moorhouse’s brewery has long linked itself to thehistory of the Pendle Witches with many of its realales, such as Blond Witch and Pendle Witchesbrew paying homage to the county’s links towitchcraft and so the anniversary itself issomething close to the team at Moorhouses withManaging Director, David Grant launching acampaign to pardon the infamous witches!

The campaign, which is supported by PendleWitches expert, Simon Entwistle has certainlybeen gaining momentum recently with manylocal people in full support of the bid. Davidsaid: “If it is ever going to happen then this is theyear to do it. Having read a lot about the trial andthe history I think they were made an example of,I think they were just herbalists convicted on theevidence of a young girl. The King at the time waskeen to come down on what he perceived aswitches.”

If the campaign gathers enough support andofficially launched then an online Governmentpetition would require 100,000 signatures for theissue to be debated in the House of Commons.

The Crucial 72 Hours!Doing the right thing immediately can make all the difference

between an early recovery and a chronic niggle that doesn’t reallysettle for months. Whatever your chosen activity, whether

competitive sport or rambling on a Sunday, an injury can be devastating, but you can help yourself with a few simple actions. All the guidelinesare now suggesting that early treatment, within the first 72 hours ofinjury, is paramount for getting better more effectively.

Remember P.R.I.C.E

ProtectionCrucially, stopping playing or the activity immediately, using taping, splints or a brace etc are all a good way of protecting the structures andpreventing further damage to the injured tissues which would delay thehealing process.

RestRest is essential to reduce the metabolic demands of the injured areaand to avoid increased blood flow and also swelling. It also reducesunnecessary stress on the damaged structures which may compromisehealing. It is important not to do anything that replicates the mechanismof injury in the early stages of healing however you can continue movingthe adjacent structures as long as it doesn’t cause increased pain at theinjury site.

IceIce limits the damage by reducing the temperature of the tissues, caused by inflammation, and limits bleeding and reduces swelling byaffecting the diameter of the capillary blood vessels. It is best applied as crushed ice, wrapped in a damp towel, for 15-20minutes every 2 hours. Always check the skin condition to avoid an ‘iceburn’.

CompressionLimits the swelling caused by the injury. Tubigrip or elastic bandages arebest and should be applied from the lowest point to the highest e.g: for

the ankle the bandage is put on from the toes, over the ankle andfinished up the calf. Always check the circulation in the toes/fingers tomake sure it isn’t too tight and take it off if lying down or at night.

ElevationYou should try to elevate the injured part above the level of the heartinitially. This lowers the blood pressure in the blood vessels directlyaround the injury and limits bleeding and swelling.Remember if a severe injury is suspected it is always better to get aspecialist’s opinion. Look out for:-

• Severe pain which doesn’t ease• Immediate swelling• Deformity• Extreme loss of function• Guarding or unusual movements• Noises e.g. cracking around the injury site

Of course, if the injury persist and doesn’t settle then Physiotherapy canhelp speed up the healing process and get you back on your feet. ThePhysiotherapist can also advise you on the best way to rehabilitateyourself back to full fitness so you can get back to enjoying your timeoff.

For further information look at the P.R.I.C.E. Guidelines by the CharteredSociety of Physiotherapy.

BELIEVE IN BETTER F

or many people decisions regarding your children’s school fall at traditional times such as going into Reception, the change from primary

to secondary school and from senior school to sixth form college.

Increasingly the competition surrounding finding the right place for your child means that many parents now start looking ahead at least 18 months in advance of any move and this is understandable, as there are so many options available and the application procedures for each kind of school varies. Peaks in interest occur when the local authority makes its offer of places in March for secondary education and April for primary education.

Open events and advertising campaigns used to be mainly focused in the Autumn Term but nowadays there are often as many events in the Spring Term and even the Summer Term. Such events are a useful way of getting a sense of a school and equally important is the school website as an indicator of what it sees as important and equally what is going on in the school.

Once you have established which appeals to you then the most important step is to visit the school and meet the head teacher, staff and pupils. Many independent schools now offer taster days to prospective pupils so that they can get a taste of daily school life. At Oakhill it is the initial school visit and taster days

that generally make people’s minds up about this being the right choice for their child.

For some people however the decision about schooling for your child comes at unexpected times either through circumstance, perhaps a change in jobs, or with the realisation that your child is no longer thriving in their current school. I have often spoken about how important it is for children to be happy so that they can learn effectively and there are times, for whatever

reason, when children lose that sense of adventure and the educational journey can become lacklustre. This is when some parents realise that all is not as it should be and begin to look for alternatives for their children. They believe in better and set out to find it.

Since November we have welcomed several children of all ages from Reception through to Year 10. One of the most rewarding things about being in education is being able to watch so many transformations and witnessing children who have not been themselves, stretch out and stand tall when they are happy in themselves.

This is what makes education worthwhile when you know that you are providing the right environment for children to feel that life is better, that learning is an adventure and school days are to be treasured. The benefits of believing in better can be seen in the return of a sparkle in the eye and a natural smile as the children feel at home once again in their school environment. The new term at Oakhill has brought us more pupils and more smiles from everyone including the parents, as they too recognise that they have made the right choice for their child.

Oakhill Principal Carmel Riley, photographed with recent new pupils, reflects on the important decisions to be made when choosing the right school for your children and the benefits to be had from making the right choice. Photography: TVPAV.com
